1 COLORADO SECTION ASCE NEWSLETTER December 2014 Volume 17, Number 9 UPCOMING MEETINGS MARK YOUR CALENDAR: December 10 ASCE Section Lunch & Presentation INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Section Meeting Details 2 Sustainability Committee News Colorado Section Contacts Advertising Opportunity PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Serkan Sengul, PE, M.ASCE ASCE Colorado Section President As our Mile-High City is being recognized for one of the nation s best places to live, we need to recognize all the infrastructure improvements that were implemented and continue to be implemented in and around the Denver- Metro Area. ASCE Colorado Section, through its local institute chapters, continues to bring you experienced presenters this year to inform you about these important projects. Our monthly section meetings have been attended by over 70 attendees this year, and we hope to increase the attendance to these meetings. This month our Transportation and Development Institute Chapter made arrangements for two great speakers from the Colorado Department of Transportation to inform us about the U.S. 36 Express Lanes project. This is one of the largest transportation projects that CDOT has undertaken lately and it will improve the commute between Boulder and Denver. We hope to see you at our monthly luncheon in December. As this year is coming to an end and the holiday season is upon us, I would like to wish all of you happy holidays on behalf of ASCE Colorado Section. We hope to see more of you attend our monthly meetings, as we believe these meetings provide you a great opportunity to network with your colleagues and potential clients. We encourage you to renew your ASCE membership prior to December 12, 2014 and support your local Colorado Section during your renewal. Sincerely, Serkan Sengul, PE, MASCE ASCE Continuing Education Short Course FINITE ELEMENTS FOR GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS given by D. Abstract: US 36 Express Lanes Project The US 36 Express Lanes Project is a multi-modal project composed of two phases led by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Regional Transportation District (RTD) to reconstruct US 36 from Federal Boulevard to 88th Street in Louisville/Superior. The presentation will provide an overview of the US 36 Phase 1 and Phase 2 projects from procurement through construction. Scott and Bob were heavily involved in writing the contracts and assisting with procurement before moving on to manage the design and construction for CDOT/High Performance Transportation Enterprise (HPTE). For those who drive the corridor regularly, this should be a great opportunity to get to the bottom of that nagging question about the work. We hope that you will find this to be an enlightening presentation about a vital project for the region. PRESENTATION Speakers: Scott Rees, P.E., Colorado Department of Transportation, Construction Manager, US 36 Design Build Scott Rees is a Construction Manager for the CDOT. He has worked for CDOT for nearly 18-years. In that time, Scott has worked as an Inspector and Project Engineer in Region 4, and as an Area Engineer at CDOT Headquarters. Scott has been a member of the US 36 management team since May of 2011 and is responsible for construction on both phases of the project. Bob Hays, P.E., Colorado Department of Transportation, Design Manager, US 36 Express Lanes Project Bob Hays is the Design Manager for the US 36 Express Lanes Project. He has worked for the CDOT for more than 11 years. The majority of that time was spent in the Boulder CDOT office as a Project Engineer and Resident Engineer. Bob was heavily involved in the procurement effort for both US 36 Phase 1 and Phase 2 projects. Save America s Infrastructure seeks to change the national conversation on infrastructure in the U.S. By highlighting our poor roads, bridges, waterways, and more, we call attention to how infrastructure affects our economy and everyday lives, and we offer solutions. We know that infrastructure investment creates jobs, builds better communities, and makes our nation safer now let s act. By tracking and analyzing Congress, state legislatures, and local initiatives, Save America s Infrastructure urges elected officials to take action and invest in America s future. See more at:
