1 Denver photographic society Applewood Valley United Methodist Church 2035 Ellis Street Golden, Co February 2016 Newsletter editor Hello everyone and welcome to the February issue of the Denver Photographic newsletter. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and a great start for The board had a planning meeting on January 5 to discuss future events for the upcoming year, that is, field trips, assign subjects, and topics for our program night. On January 7 fourteen members came and voted for events for The assign subjects this year will be : Fog/Soft Focus, Reflections, Old/Weathered Wood, and Fruits/Vegetables. Plan on bring your slides on the first Thursday for the months of February, April, August and October. This year we plan on having 9 field trips throughout the front range and a few trips in Colorado. Mark your calendars for the Swap meet on May 1st and September 25th. Our Scavenger hunt will be in Idaho Springs on September 17th. Also that evening talk about the new voting machine that we will use this year. Like to thank Terri Kindsfather for volunteering for managing and handing out the ribbons for the winning images. January 14 we had our competition night 16 members attended. Dee Beneda gave us an update on Cheryl Bokros, she is doing much better (God speed Cheryl). We used the new voting machine with a few hiccups, it went smooth toward the end of the meeting. Billie Campbell was the judge for the evening and gave us good and honest critiques. Like to thank Mike and Brandi Stebritz for furnishing the snacks. 4 Images of Club Members and Prints Events for DPS Please join us for are 1st field trip on January 30th to the Botanic Gardens at 9:00 A.M. They are showcase their annual orchid exhibit, through February 22. On February 4th we will have our slide competition, and program. Our guest speaker and judge for the evening will be, Sonya Shannon, the presentation will be Behind the Art. Here is a short biography of her work. Sonya Shannon is a Canadian-American visionary artist & author. Her work explores mystical subjects through art photography and hand-rendered effects. A classically trained animator (meaning pencil and paper!), her career highlights include special effects on Star Trek III, creative direction at Broadway Video (home of Saturday Night Live }, and a pioneer digital version of Josef Albers Interaction of Color shown at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Sonya developed the MFA Computer Art degree curriculum at Pratt Institute (Brooklyn) and School of Visual Arts, New York, and has lectured internationally on digital special effects. Early computer art and animation deeply shaped Sonya s decision to use digital tools in a photographically-based cinematic process to create fine art. These influences give rise to lavishly illuminated images that conjure up highly realistic-looking metaphysical realms of imagination and fantasy. Between late April and early August, 2014, Sonya created 40 of the 44 photo-paintings and all of the messages in the Transformation Oracle, a divination tool for reading life s changes. She is currently working on the Crystal Angels Oracle, due out in 2016, and a photographically-based graphic novel about childhood abuse.
