2 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst San Martin Market Calle de Urbieta San Sebastián This new market hall, now more shopping mall than food, replaced an old market place which was originally built in 1884 José de Goicoa designed this original building, inspired by a French example, the Les Halles in Bayona The old market was built at the point when the city of Donostia started to grow beyond its walls, and the market has subsequently expanded since Eventually the old market place with fresh fish, fruit and meat, has grown to be part of the collective historic memory and the social structure of the city Because the need for commercial space in the city centre grew, and the consumer behaviour changed, the city decided to replace the old market This decision was a controversial one Many inhabitants dispute the necessity of another new and mediocre shopping mall, and argument that the city, known for it's strong gastronomic tradition should not have replaced the fresh food-stalls with DVD's and clothing Floor area/size m² Main designer, Luis Uzcanga Almudena Grandío City of Donostia Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst 2

3 photo: Hans Brinker Offices Osakidetza Calle Licenciado Poza Bilbao The river of Bilbao is not the only area where urban renewal is taking place In the center of the old town, the Basque Government has commissioned the young Basque architect Juan Coll-Barreu to design a 'vital' building, dominantly present on the corner of Calle Licenciado Poza with La Alameda de Rekalde The works of this architect are characterized by their adaptive nature, like a glove fits to a hand All conditions and circumstances are taken into account: first the urban context, the client's wishes, the functions of the building, the climate, and finally the project itself After winning the design competition, this was the first project for him in a complex urban situation: 'In this design process, everything was a challenge' The building is bold and transparent, to express the healty image of Bilbao, and the vital works of its occupants: the Department of Public Health A double glazed facade functions as a warm blanket in the winter, and a natural membrane in summer Project is not public! 2007 coll-barreu arquitectos Basque Government Departamento de Sanidad y Osakidetza hansbrinker The office is located at the corner of Licenciado Poza street, with the Alameda de Rekalde 3

4 photo: HJ Imhoff Sondika Airport Errementeri Kalea E Bilbao The steel and concrete structure, nicknamed La Paloma (the Dove) because of its resemblance to a giant bird about to take flight, is integrated into the hilly green landscape in the Txoriherri Valley in close proximity to Bilbao The aluminium skin of the Central Terminal sweeps across the 140 meter long terminal entry, providing cover for multiple levels of arrival and departure The layout was designed to limit the impact of auxiliary buildings on the vista of the main building An elegant four-storey parking structure, with a skylit walkway leading to the Terminal Building, is tucked into a grassy embankment Floor area/size m² Santiago Calatrava Aeropuertes Nacionales de Bilbao HJI From Bilbao city centre you can reach the airport most easily by Bizkaibus A-3247 within 30 minutes 4

5 Zubizuri bridge Pasarela Zubi Zuri Bilbao The Zubizuri (Basque for "white bridge"), also called the Campo Volantin Bridge or Puente del Campo Volantin, is a tied arch footbridge across the Nervion River in Bilbao, linking the Campo Volantin right bank and Uribitarte left bank of the river The design consists of an inclined structural steel arch linking two platforms, with access ramps and stairways on both banks photo: HJ Imhoff 1997 Santiago Calatrava City of Bilbao HJI always open 5

6 photo: Aleix Bagué photo: Aleix Bagué La Peña Multi-Sport Pavillion Calle Lekanda Bilbao The lot for this project is a reduced and irregular piece of terrain, almost residual, that opens a way between the rear and unaligned façades of neighbouring housing and the almost vertical wall of a natural hillside A new commuter train station and the metallic structure of the existent pediment determine the boundaries of the lot and generate different slopes The sports complex is a uneven volume that complies with multiple conditions that coexist in the lot A semi-transparent fencing of black concrete and glass tries to respond to the different situations generated between the transforming residential city and natural hillside profoundly affected by industrialization (text from website architects) photo: Aleix Bagué coll-barreu arquitectos Bilbao City Council julie08 6

8 photo: Patrizia Zubieta photo: Hans Brinker Regional Library of Bizkaia Diputación Bilbao _Codigo=294 The origins of the Regional Library of Bizkaia can be found in the personal library of Fidel de Sagarminaga, a politician, writer and owner of an outstanding library of nearly 12,000 titles, on Basque themes The Library, bursting at the seams due to lack of space, and outdated in its services, underwent a new overhaul, extension and conversion of the physical space in the 1980's; however, the continuous growth of the rich bibliographical and newspaper collections once again pushed the facility to the limit of its capacity As a consequence, an ambitious project for the extension and upgrading of the building was undertaken under the direction of IMB architects (Gloria Iriarte, Eduardo Múgica and Agustín de la Brena) The result was a Library adapted to the cultural reality of Bizkaia, providing new services to meet the challenges posed by the society of the 21st century Opened after four years of construction, while at the same time, the building was never closed from the public photo: Hans Brinker IMB arquitectos hansbrinker * Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 20:30 * Saturdays from 9:00 to 13:30 During the summer (mid June to mid September), the Regional Library closes to the public one hour earlier foru_liburutegia@bizkaianet call them at The Regional Library offers guided tours, which must be arranged in advance by phone, through the web site, or in person at the Library Tours take place on: * Tuesdays, from 10:30 am to 12 pm * Thursdays, from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm It s near of "Moyua" subway station 8

9 photo: ACXT photo: ACXT Bilbao Exhibition Centre Ronda de Azkue Barakaldo BEC to be situated in the land formerly occupied by an industrial factory in Barakaldo, is an ambitious project to construct a new exhibition centre which will be provided with the most modern installations from the architectural, functional and technological point of view The exhibition use is carried out in 6 pavilions situated 3 to 3 along the main indoor axis This axis really becomes the backbone of the building, since it houses at different levels the flows which take place at the fair: vehicles, lorries and pedestrians Thus, on the lower levels there are three underground parking floors to house 4,200 vehicles On a level above, the lorries also move longitudinally having direct access to the pavilions for loading and unloading Finally, on the upper level and with direct access from the street, pedestrians walk along a large indoor street with access to natural light, which becomes the main space for relation photo: ACXT Floor area/size m² ACXT BILBAO EXHIBITION CENTRE aroman 9

11 photo: Aleix Bagué photo: Aleix Bagué Bilbao Research and Administration Building Ibaizabal Bidea Bilbao This complex on the outskirts of Bilbao houses m2 of work area and almost 1000 m2 of parking spaces in a gently sloping green field site The new building tries to retain the atmosphere of the landscape comprising two rolling hills against a background of low mountains The volume is divided into three elongated prisms, two glazed and the other one made out of granite and concrete These were placed upon the different levels of the hill A fourth cubic block, also glazed, forms a square with the stone one that opens up onto de widest valley The glass façades draw in the humid and misty landscape typical of the region It was intended that the complex retained a recognizable scale despite its size, and that each working space should posess an understandable relationship with the rest of the building and the surroundings (text from website architects) photo: Aleix Bagué Project is not public!
