6 photo: ACXT photo: ACXT Bilbao Exhibition Centre Ronda de Azkue Barakaldo BEC to be situated in the land formerly occupied by an industrial factory in Barakaldo, is an ambitious project to construct a new exhibition centre which will be provided with the most modern installations from the architectural, functional and technological point of view The exhibition use is carried out in 6 pavilions situated 3 to 3 along the main indoor axis This axis really becomes the backbone of the building, since it houses at different levels the flows which take place at the fair: vehicles, lorries and pedestrians Thus, on the lower levels there are three underground parking floors to house 4,200 vehicles On a level above, the lorries also move longitudinally having direct access to the pavilions for loading and unloading Finally, on the upper level and with direct access from the street, pedestrians walk along a large indoor street with access to natural light, which becomes the main space for relation photo: ACXT m² ACXT BILBAO EXHIBITION CENTRE aroman 6

9 photo: Miguel de Guzmán photo: Miguel de Guzmán Auditorium and Multifunctional Building in Muskiz Calle de Cendeja 21 Muskiz This project proposed a mixed-use building for the municipality of Muskiz with public functions (a small auditorium and a youth centre) and private functions (offices, bars and retail), organized by means of a public square with a covered gallery The municipality of Muskiz is dominated by the presence of a big refinery, visible from the motorway from Bilbao to Santander The public square is opened towards the south, the views and the sun; it is closed towards the north, to protect itself from the dominant winds and severe rainfalls and to conceal the ever-present view on the refinery and its chimneys The auditorium is located at the west of the ensemble, as a detached and prismatic volume, directly linked with the latter area On the other side the ensemble is bent and lowered to adapt itself to the scale and plan of the adjacent dwellings and urban fabric, creating a patio around which the youth centre is organized photo: Miguel de Guzmán m² Virai Arquitectos Municipality of Muskiz Virai_Arquitectos 9

15 photo: Andrew Larsen photo: Andrew Pisarek Experience Music Project 5th Avenue North 325 Seattle Washington United States The Experience Music Project in Seattle is a museum dedicated to the exploration of creativity and innovation in popular music The museum contains mostly rock memorabilia and technology-intensive multimedia displays, but is not limited to that It was founded by Paul Allen of Microsoft fame, and it is located in the Seattle city centre, near the Space Needle The building was designed by Frank Gehry, bearing a lot of similarities to his other works Its sheet metal construction resembles Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles Much of the building material is exposed in the building's interior Reminding many of a smashed guitar, Gehry himself stated: "We started collecting pictures of Stratocasters, bringing in guitar bodies, drawing on those shapes in developing our ideas" The architecture was greeted by Seattle residents with a mixture of acclaim for Gehry and derision for this particular edifice, some calling it a 'blob' and others 'the hemmorhoids' photo: Ryan Taube m² Structural engineer Gehry Partners Hoffman Construction Company Paul Allen Robin 10:00-17:00 daily The building is served by the Seattle Monorail, which connects it to Westlake center The monorail runs through the building There are also many bus lines going to the Seattle Center If you are going by car, you will find many lots and ample street parking surrounding EMP and the Seattle Center campus The largest lot in close proximity to EMP is located at 5th Avenue North and Harrison Street 15

17 photo: Parker Anderson photo: Parker Anderson Peter B Lewis Building Euclid Avenue Cleveland Ohio United States The Peter B Lewis Building is home to Case Western University's Weatherhead School of Management The exterior is an interesting collision of brick and the curving stainless steel forms he made famous in Bilbao and Los Angeles In fact, it was Gehry's unbuilt design for Mr Lewis' house, that is credited with some of the design choices he later explored in at the Guggenheim The interior of the building is one the more successful aspects of it The smooth curves of the wall draw the visitor, and Gehry's excellent mastery of light is revealed here as the natural light that penetrates the space shifts colors throughout the day He also makes good use of natural materials, namely wood, to warm up the classroom spaces photo: Parker Anderson m² Gehry Partners rtaube Tours are available on the weekends from 1pm to 3:30pm Though its mail address says it is located on Euclid Avenue, the building is actually located just off Euclid on the intersection of Ford Drive and Bellflower Road 17

18 photo: GAZ Arquitectos photo: GAZ Arquitectos Deba Jai Alai Gurutze Kalea Deba The council of Deba, a seaside town between Bilbao and San Sebastian, needed to build a new covered 'Jai- Alai' building (Basque Pelota courtyard) The location of the building was next to a big slope, where the town loses its urban character and the green mountains that surround the town begin At the same time, as it is common in these constrained towns between the mountains and the sea, the lack of open public spaces gave the architects the opportunity to build a public-roof, a place for sightseeing that visually connects the sea, the mountains and the rooftops of the town To preserve the unity of the concept, the whole building was built of wood and iron as a reminiscence of ship construction and traditional Basque farms Some parts of the roof are covered with recycled rubber in different shades of green and can be used as a carpet to install a children's playground m² GAZ arquitectos Debako Udala - Deba council HALONS photo: GAZ Arquitectos 18

20 photo: AH Asociados photo: AH Asociados Housing in Loiu Avenida Txorierri Loiu As a general premise, the aim has been to group together spaces used for the same purposes in order to avoid noise problems, minimise and economise on the interior layouts, localise wet rooms and false ceilings, group ventilation elements and drains, controlling their appearance in roofs and ground floors and below ground level Similarly, the aim has been to make a distinction between day and night areas, the serving and the served spaces, minimise the surface area dedicated to hallways and landings, and providing the maximum surface area possible for wardrobes and storage without affecting the habitable surface area The building has been distributed following as far as possible the functional requirements of the protected housing programme, without sacrificing the achievement of a quality architectural proposal, in accordance with the urban, technical and economic conditioning parameters as a whole photo: AH Asociados m² AH Asociados Visesa AH_asociados 20

23 Housing at Ortutxueta Calle Ortutxueta Bilbao This proposal, winner of the competition Europan IV, involves the recovery of the lands of a disused mine next to a very densely populated working class neighbourhood It is part of a zoning operation of the authors who then afterwards break up into different tasks, according to the division of the plot This intervention is very directly connected to the project of the adjacent plot, which is the one that can hold the highest population density The project is adapted to the slope and creates a block with no access to traffic On this block, the buildings wind over a well-cared collective space It tries a type of row house which also takes advantage of the difference in elevation to regulate the heights and places emphasis on the decks which, in this case, become a fifth spectacular façade The scarce variety of types of homes is the least notable aspect Project is not public! m² Belzunce, DMauriño, G Millán Dirección de Vivienda del Gobierno Vasco aplust photo: Miguel de Guzman 23

24 photo: Hans Brinker photo: Hans Brinker University Library Deusto Avda de las Universidades Bilbao The new Library of the University of Deusto is open to students, researchers, institutions and companies worldwide It seeks to pursue pedagogical innovation, while at the same time offering a dynamic and flexible architectural environment, in accordance with the new European Space for Higher Education In this regard, the open access facilities have been conceived as a space where users may find the best conditions for learning and research The development of the library must be seen in context of the wide range of actions carried out by Bilbao Town Council in the last few years, which seeks to consolidate Bilbao as a city of knowledge The deep changes that this city has undergone have facilitated, among other things, the expansion of university campuses in the city centre, as in the case of the new library The building is divided into five floors above ground and another five underground, all equipped with modern electronic resources m² Rafael Moneo University of Deusto hansbrinker photo: Hans Brinker The Library will be closed on Sundays, bank holidays and on the following days: 13 October, 2 and 3 November, 7 December, 22 December - 1 January, 28 January, March, 1 May, 31 July, 15 August, 22 August (Bilbao) Days with special opening hours:21 December: 8-12 pm The new University of Deusto Library is strategically located and integrated into the Abandoibarra area, facing the Guggenheim Museum 24
