2 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Casa da Musica Avenida da Boavista Porto After Porto was selected one of the 2 cultural capitals of Europe in 2001, an international competition started, for a new concert hall to be positioned in the historical centre The shape directly derived from programmatic-piling-up Two shoe-box concert halls were piled first, the other public programs were added onto the shoe-boxes and the remaining spaces between the public functions were filled up with secondary serving spaces, such as foyers, restaurant, terraces, technical spaces and vertical transport A continuous route connects all functions and remaining spaces by stairs, platforms and escalators: the building becomes an architectural adventure The loop creates the possibility to use it for festivals with simultaneous performances Wave-like corrugated glass is used in both the 1300 seat grand auditorium and its smaller 350 seat counterpart Through material transparency each space reveals its contents to the city; showing an array of performances and cultural events photo: Casa da Música Floor area/size m² Main designer, Architect Interior architect Structural engineer Supplier OMA - Rem Koolhaas Inside Outside ARUP Lensvelt Porto 2001 / Casa da Música boeboe The building is open every day, Mo-Sat: from 10:00-19:00 h; Sunday : from 10:00-18:00 h, The Casa organizes daily guided tours through the buidling: 11:00 and 16:00h For groups of 15 to 35 people To reserve and more info: visitasguiadas@casadamusicacom Metro: Linha Azul, stop at Matosinhos - Estádio do Dragão Or Linha Vermelha, stop at Estádio do Dragão - Srª da Hora 2

4 Matosinhos Fish Market R do Conde de São Salvador 4450 Matosinhos Built between 1936 and 1946, this market was projected by a Porto based architecture firm ARS-Arquitectos This building is an icon for this area of the city, located next to Leixões Port It's all made in light concrete It remains almost intact since it's first appearance 1946 Architect ARS-Arquitectos Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos Joao_Sousa daytime By the Porto subway system in the blue line it's the last stop "Mercado de Matosinhos" 4

6 Bom Sucesso Market Rua de Caldas Xavier 4150 Porto This building was one of the first buildings to be built in this zone In 1951 the works begin to give shape to this project Its structure of reinforced concrete is made out of pre-casted beams disposed in a radial shape The way the entry of light is designed and works in the interior is absolutely incredible and shows a great sensibility in this subject Even after more than 50 years of use, this building remains almost as good as new All the spatial richness is still present and as a market it has a rich social life photo: Carlos Dias 1952 Architect ARS-Arquitectos Câmara Municipal do Porto Joao_Sousa From around 700h till 1700h Right next to the square where there is "Casa da Música" It's less than five minute walk from the metro station 6

7 Water Pavilion Estrada da Circunvalação Porto This pavilion was built to be part of the Expo 1998 in Lisbon It was rebuilt in Porto at the city park The shape of the building stands like if it were levitating from the ground, coming out of a surface of water It's structure is entirely made out of wood 1998 Architect, Urban planner Supplier Alexandre Burmester José Carlos Gonçalves Águas do Porto Joao_Sousa By the city park is easy to reach by foot By car/bus there's an entrance at the "Estrada da Circunvalação" 7

8 Commercial Building in Boavista Avenida da Boavista 4050 Porto The building is designed like a succession of boxes disposed randomly over a platform From the traditional platform-like style building that Souto Moura uses to make, now he rethinks the concept of the box-like architecture, transforming it into a composition of boxes that generate an urban façade over the avenue 2008 Architect, Interior architect Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa Depending of the stores The building is located in the Avenida da Boavista right in front of the east entry to the city park There are several Buses going down that avenue 8

9 photo: Sahil Latheef photo: Carlos Dias She Changes Praça de Cidade do Salvador 4100 Porto is home to artist Janet Echelman's 'She Changes', a 160-foot-tall waterfront netted wind sculpture suspended above a 3-lane highway roundabout, which received the IFAI International Achievement Award and the Public Art Network's Year in Review Award It is a monumental, red and white, membrane-like sculpture at the Praca Cidade San Salvador in the town of Matosinhos along the shoreline outside of Porto Through her art, Janet Echelman reshapes urban airspace with monumental public sculptures that respond to environmental forces including wind, water, and sunlight "I am a sculptor who shapes urban space I prefer the immediacy and challenge of transforming sites that are either unnoticed infrastructure that have faded from public memory, or iconic landmarks that are so overexposed they become habitual background" photo: Carlos Dias 2005 Artist Janet Echelman MI_MOA 24/7 9
