5 photo: Miguel de Guzmán photo: Miguel de Guzmán Auditorium and Multifunctional Building in Muskiz Calle de Cendeja 21 Muskiz This project proposed a mixed-use building for the municipality of Muskiz with public functions (a small auditorium and a youth centre) and private functions (offices, bars and retail), organized by means of a public square with a covered gallery The municipality of Muskiz is dominated by the presence of a big refinery, visible from the motorway from Bilbao to Santander The public square is opened towards the south, the views and the sun; it is closed towards the north, to protect itself from the dominant winds and severe rainfalls and to conceal the ever-present view on the refinery and its chimneys The auditorium is located at the west of the ensemble, as a detached and prismatic volume, directly linked with the latter area On the other side the ensemble is bent and lowered to adapt itself to the scale and plan of the adjacent dwellings and urban fabric, creating a patio around which the youth centre is organized photo: Miguel de Guzmán m² Virai Arquitectos Municipality of Muskiz Virai_Arquitectos 5

6 photo: Aleix Bagué photo: Aleix Bagué Bilbao Research and Administration Building Ibaizabal Bidea Bilbao This complex on the outskirts of Bilbao houses m2 of work area and almost 1000 m2 of parking spaces in a gently sloping green field site The new building tries to retain the atmosphere of the landscape comprising two rolling hills against a background of low mountains The volume is divided into three elongated prisms, two glazed and the other one made out of granite and concrete These were placed upon the different levels of the hill A fourth cubic block, also glazed, forms a square with the stone one that opens up onto de widest valley The glass façades draw in the humid and misty landscape typical of the region It was intended that the complex retained a recognizable scale despite its size, and that each working space should posess an understandable relationship with the rest of the building and the surroundings (text from website architects) photo: Aleix Bagué Project is not public! m² coll-barreu arquitectos Basque Government julie08 6

12 photo: GAZ Arquitectos photo: GAZ Arquitectos Deba Jai Alai Gurutze Kalea Deba The council of Deba, a seaside town between Bilbao and San Sebastian, needed to build a new covered 'Jai- Alai' building (Basque Pelota courtyard) The location of the building was next to a big slope, where the town loses its urban character and the green mountains that surround the town begin At the same time, as it is common in these constrained towns between the mountains and the sea, the lack of open public spaces gave the architects the opportunity to build a public-roof, a place for sightseeing that visually connects the sea, the mountains and the rooftops of the town To preserve the unity of the concept, the whole building was built of wood and iron as a reminiscence of ship construction and traditional Basque farms Some parts of the roof are covered with recycled rubber in different shades of green and can be used as a carpet to install a children's playground m² GAZ arquitectos Debako Udala - Deba council HALONS photo: GAZ Arquitectos 12

25 Housing at Ortutxueta Calle Ortutxueta Bilbao This proposal, winner of the competition Europan IV, involves the recovery of the lands of a disused mine next to a very densely populated working class neighbourhood It is part of a zoning operation of the authors who then afterwards break up into different tasks, according to the division of the plot This intervention is very directly connected to the project of the adjacent plot, which is the one that can hold the highest population density The project is adapted to the slope and creates a block with no access to traffic On this block, the buildings wind over a well-cared collective space It tries a type of row house which also takes advantage of the difference in elevation to regulate the heights and places emphasis on the decks which, in this case, become a fifth spectacular façade The scarce variety of types of homes is the least notable aspect Project is not public! m² Belzunce, DMauriño, G Millán Dirección de Vivienda del Gobierno Vasco aplust photo: Miguel de Guzman 25
