2 photo: Andrew Larsen photo: Andrew Pisarek Experience Music Project 5th Avenue North 325 Seattle Washington United States The Experience Music Project in Seattle is a museum dedicated to the exploration of creativity and innovation in popular music The museum contains mostly rock memorabilia and technology-intensive multimedia displays, but is not limited to that It was founded by Paul Allen of Microsoft fame, and it is located in the Seattle city centre, near the Space Needle The building was designed by Frank Gehry, bearing a lot of similarities to his other works Its sheet metal construction resembles Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles Much of the building material is exposed in the building's interior Reminding many of a smashed guitar, Gehry himself stated: "We started collecting pictures of Stratocasters, bringing in guitar bodies, drawing on those shapes in developing our ideas" The architecture was greeted by Seattle residents with a mixture of acclaim for Gehry and derision for this particular edifice, some calling it a 'blob' and others 'the hemmorhoids' photo: Ryan Taube Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Hoffman Construction Company Paul Allen Robin 10:00-17:00 daily The building is served by the Seattle Monorail, which connects it to Westlake center The monorail runs through the building There are also many bus lines going to the Seattle Center If you are going by car, you will find many lots and ample street parking surrounding EMP and the Seattle Center campus The largest lot in close proximity to EMP is located at 5th Avenue North and Harrison Street 2

3 photo: Parker Anderson photo: Parker Anderson Peter B Lewis Building Euclid Avenue Cleveland Ohio United States The Peter B Lewis Building is home to Case Western University's Weatherhead School of Management The exterior is an interesting collision of brick and the curving stainless steel forms he made famous in Bilbao and Los Angeles In fact, it was Gehry's unbuilt design for Mr Lewis' house, that is credited with some of the design choices he later explored in at the Guggenheim The interior of the building is one the more successful aspects of it The smooth curves of the wall draw the visitor, and Gehry's excellent mastery of light is revealed here as the natural light that penetrates the space shifts colors throughout the day He also makes good use of natural materials, namely wood, to warm up the classroom spaces photo: Parker Anderson Floor area/size m² rtaube Tours are available on the weekends from 1pm to 3:30pm Though its mail address says it is located on Euclid Avenue, the building is actually located just off Euclid on the intersection of Ford Drive and Bellflower Road 3

4 photo: Hans Brinker photo: Hans Brinker University Library Deusto Avda de las Universidades Bilbao The new Library of the University of Deusto is open to students, researchers, institutions and companies worldwide It seeks to pursue pedagogical innovation, while at the same time offering a dynamic and flexible architectural environment, in accordance with the new European Space for Higher Education In this regard, the open access facilities have been conceived as a space where users may find the best conditions for learning and research The development of the library must be seen in context of the wide range of actions carried out by Bilbao Town Council in the last few years, which seeks to consolidate Bilbao as a city of knowledge The deep changes that this city has undergone have facilitated, among other things, the expansion of university campuses in the city centre, as in the case of the new library The building is divided into five floors above ground and another five underground, all equipped with modern electronic resources Floor area/size m² Rafael Moneo University of Deusto hansbrinker photo: Hans Brinker The Library will be closed on Sundays, bank holidays and on the following days: 13 October, 2 and 3 November, 7 December, 22 December - 1 January, 28 January, March, 1 May, 31 July, 15 August, 22 August (Bilbao) Days with special opening hours:21 December: 8-12 pm The new University of Deusto Library is strategically located and integrated into the Abandoibarra area, facing the Guggenheim Museum 4

6 photo: HJ Imhoff Sondika Airport Errementeri Kalea E Bilbao The steel and concrete structure, nicknamed La Paloma (the Dove) because of its resemblance to a giant bird about to take flight, is integrated into the hilly green landscape in the Txoriherri Valley in close proximity to Bilbao The aluminium skin of the Central Terminal sweeps across the 140 meter long terminal entry, providing cover for multiple levels of arrival and departure The layout was designed to limit the impact of auxiliary buildings on the vista of the main building An elegant four-storey parking structure, with a skylit walkway leading to the Terminal Building, is tucked into a grassy embankment Floor area/size m² Santiago Calatrava Aeropuertes Nacionales de Bilbao HJI From Bilbao city centre you can reach the airport most easily by Bizkaibus A-3247 within 30 minutes 6
