Sheila will give an verview f RE resurces and available technlgies used successfully in the USA t ffset building electrical and thermal energy lads. Methds fr applying these technlgies in buildings and the rle f building energy efficiency in successful RE prjects will be addressed. Sheila will discuss issues related t cnnecting RE systems t existing electrical grids and ffer tips fr implementing successful RE prjects. Finally, Sheila will summarize ASHRAE activities related t and/r in supprt f RE applicatins in buildings. Ken brings ver 30 years f experience in bth glbal HVAC and Aerspace/Defense rles, including sales, prject management, quality/reliability and sustaining engineering. Ken has held a Six Sigma Black Belt, Member f ASHRAE and senir member f ASQ. Ken began wrking with Danfss Turbcr in 2006 as the Directr f Quality. In his current psitin as Key Accunt Manager Ken supprts several majr OEMs in Nrth America in the applicatin and technical supprt f Turbcr cmpressrs. Ken hlds a BS in Industrial Engineering frm Suthern Illinis University, and a MS Degree in System Management frm Flrida Institute f Technlgy. ASHRAE AND IBPSA-USA SIMBUILD 2016 CONFERENCE ASHRAE and IBPSA-USA have annunced a secnd, c-rganized cnference that encmpasses the ASHRAE Energy Mdeling and IBPSA-USA SimBuild Cnferences. The crganized cnference, titled ASHRAE and IBPSA-USA SimBuild 2016: Building Perfrmance Mdeling, takes place August 10-12, 2016, Salt Lake City, Utah. There is currently an pen call fr papers. The first jintly rganized cnference held in 2014 was a huge success in its ability t bring t the building energy analysis and perfrmance simulatin cmmunity tgether and prvide the cnference cntent t serve attendees, Dennis Knight, Cnference chair, said. The ASHRAE and IBPSA-USA SimBuild 2016 cnference seeks t build upn that success and further imprve the industry s ability t accurately mdel building perfrmance. 7 Get t knw DAN MERKEL, TEXAS AIR SYSTEMS Dan grew up in the Milwaukee area in Chenequa, WI, a small twn f rughly 500. During high schl, he was a funding member f the FIRST rbtics rganizatin in his schl. He was a ftball player and sailr until a wrist injury ended bth f these athletic pursuits. The injury changed the trajectry f his high schl career and he shifted his fcus frm athletics t academics and arts. He excelled in math and science, rbtics, cmputer prgramming, theater and chir. He attended Marquette University, earning a bachelr s degree in electrical engineering with a business minr. In cllege, he stayed invlved with rbtics and participated in IEEE and ther student grups. He was als elected as the engineering class president. As president, Dan learned hw t interact with peple and wrk well with many different persnalities. As his cllege career came t a clse, he first encuntered the HVAC industry at a career fair. As Dan talked with Carrier in New Yrk abut pssibly beginning his career there, his criteria fr lcatin was simply wrking in a city. After graduating frm Marquette, he began his career with Carrier and settled int a service supervisr rle and prgressed t equipment sales, cntrls sales, and system slutin sales psitins. In Octber f 2006, he was asked t transfer t Dallas. Dallas was a city, s that, nce again, fit his simple criteria fr lcatin. The ht climate als made it a fantastic lcatin t sell HVAC. After mving t Texas, he went n t cmplete an MBA at TCU in the fall f During this time, he began wrking with Texas Air Systems as a VFD specialist, fcused n teaching the technlgy. He als began his invlvement in the Frt Wrth ASHRAE chapter. He served as the chapter histrian fr 2 years, and cmpiled the archive and histry f the chapter int the Frt Wrth library. In 2009 he served as the treasurer and began the prcess f prgressing thrugh the ASHRAE fficer leadership psitins and served as president in In the summer f 2014, he began serving as a reginal vice chair fr gvernment grassrts advcacy cmmittee. In this rle, he fcuses n advancing ASHRAE s missin with lcal gvernments, municipalities and serves as a liaisn t federal gvernment. In wrking with varius vlunteer rganizatins, Dan has learned that the peple make the difference. Tpic is Using Magnetic Bearing Chiller Technlgy by Ken Kehler Intrduce ur speaker tday: Jacb Cantu Tpic: Integrating Renewable Energy Systems int Buildings Speaker: Sheila Hayter, ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Sheila Hayter is the Prject Assessment and Develpment Sectin Manager within the Integrated Applicatins Center (IAC) f the U.S. Department f Energy s (DOE) Natinal Renewable Energy Labratry (NREL) in Glden, Clrad. In this capacity, she leads a team f technical and plicy experts wh supprt federal, state, and lcal entities n energy efficiency (EE) and renewable energy (RE) tpics with the gal t make significant reductins in nn-renewable energy cnsumptin thrugh energy efficiency and increased use f RE technlgies. Sheila s wrk includes serving as the IAC partnership develpment lead and managing key accunts fr the IAC and NREL, including serving as the NREL Key Accunt Manager fr the U.S. Department f Hmeland Security. Sheila s past activities include leading DOE s Slar America Cities technical assistance activities fr Bstn and New Yrk City, with the gal t assist these municipalities incrprate strategies int plicies, prcedures, and specific prjects that will result in widespread applicatin f slar technlgies. Since jining NREL in 1992, Sheila s wrk has included serving n the Organizing Cmmittee and leading the subjective judging cmpnent f the 2002, 2005, and 2007 DOE Slar Decathlns, managing sustainable buildings activities funded by the DOE Federal Energy Management Prgram, managing the Phtvltaics (PV) fr Buildings activities funded by the DOE Slar Prgram, evaluating building perfrmance during the design and mnitring phases t supprt the DOE High Perfrmance Buildings Prgram, and writing papers, giving cnference presentatins, and develping/giving training related t highperfrmance buildings. Sheila is registered prfessinal engineer in the State f Clrad. Sheila served n the ASHRAE Bard f Directrs as a vice president ( ) and als as a Directr at Large ( ). She chaired the Publicatins and Educatin Cuncil, has served n Technlgy Cuncil, Finance Cmmittee, Planning Cmmittee Sciety Rules Cmmittee, Research Activities Cmmittee (chair ), Cntinuing Educatin Cmmittee (chair ), and ASHRAE Prgram Cmmittee. She chaired the Greening ASHRAE Meetings and Expsitin presidential ad hc cmmittee ( ), and was a member f the Building Energy Labeling, ASHRAE Lg, Glbalizatin Radmap, and Strategic Plan IV ad hc cmmittees as well as served as a member f the Advance Energy Design Guide Steering Cmmittee. In additin, Sheila has served in leadership rles f many technical cmmittees.
