1 Minutes f the Diseases f Beneficial Invertebrates (DBI) Business Meeting Meeting was chaired by Helen Hesketh. 15th August 2018 Item 1. Opening, welcme and apprval f the Agenda Agenda was apprved. Minutes frm the 2017 divisin meeting were apprved. Item 2. Divisin Updates & Finances Current Membership DBI Membership has remained stable ver the last few years. Members are again asked t ensure their membership is current and kept updated; remember t renew yur membership fees when they are due. 2013/ / / / /18 Regular Members Students Ttal * * 51 as f 13 th August. Divisin regular membership fees are t remain the same, $10. Members are asked t remind students that membership t this divisin is free and t encurage students t apply fr the travel awards. This year we had n suitable applicants and s the funds were diverted t cver invited speaker awards. Finances DBI Divisin: Fiscal Year 2018 (May 1, 2017 April 30, 2018) The balance in the DBI s accunt at the clse f FY 2017 was $ In additin t this, SIP Cuncil agreed t prvide $4000 t supprt student travel awards and invited speaker awards fr the meeting in San Dieg. The Divisin spent $6, in 2017 (including $300 being returned t General Fund). This year the divisin has spent $2,000 n invited speakers and it is expected that the fiscal year will finish with a balance f $

Meetings Reprts San Dieg Meeting 2017 SIP 2017 was the 50th Glden Jubilee Anniversary f SIP meetings and was held at the University f Califrnia, San Dieg Campus, La Jlla, Califrnia, 14th-18th August There were apprximately 353 participants and 33 cmpanins in attendance. There were 216 ral presentatins (169 regular member, 47 student), 104 psters (86 regular member, 18 student), 10 divisinal and crss divisinal sympsia and the 2 nd Ag Innvatins Cnference was held prir t the start f the meeting. DBI cntributed the fllwing: Kelly Bateman and Elke Genersch prvided an verview f the divisin, and highlighted research in the area ver the last 50 years as part f the Funders Lecture A crss-divisinal sympsium with the Virus Divisin was rganised by Kelly Bateman and Martin Earlandsn n Hnring Just Vlak. Gld Cast Meeting 2018 SIP 2018 was held n the Gld Cast in Australia, 12 th 16 th August There were 258 participants and 24 cmpanins in attendance, the week being split int 8 divisinal and crss divisinal sympsia and a wrkshp n Prtein specificity and its impact n safety and resistance. DBI cntributed the fllwing: Divisinal sympsium was rganised by Helen Hesketh and Elke Genersch n Health Issues f Bee and Nn-bee Pllinatrs. This invlved 4 presentatins and included three f the invited speakers: Jie Huang Overview f WSSV and its emergence Peter Mhr White spt disease utbreak in farmed prawns in Queensland, Australia in 2016 Ornchuma Itsathitphaisarn Ptential future therapies fr WSSV Kelly Bateman Wild type relative f the mst imprtant viral pathgen in glbal aquaculture There were tw cntributed paper sessins, ne f which was shared with Micrspridia and the secnd shared with Viruses. There were 11 presentatins and 9 psters. Valencia, Spain, SIP 2019 Next year the meeting will be held in Valencia, Spain, 28 th July 1 st August The meeting will be shared between SIP and the Internatinal Organisatin fr Bilgical and Integrated Cntrl (IOBC). The IOBC meetings usually take place when the SIP meetings are held in America, it is a unique pprtunity t jin the tw meetings. This will invlve a shared prgramme and rganisatin f events; hwever, SIP sympsia will be run as usual and members shuld nt really ntice the difference. There will be mre student awards and there will be an ptin t jin IOBC n registratin and all participants can publish extended abstracts in the IOBC Bulletin. The meeting will be held at the Palau de Cngrsss Cnference Centre, excursins are t be cnfirmed but the 5K run will be held in Turia gardens (an ld river bed), the BBQ at Jardins de la Hacienda and the Banquet will be held at a restaurant n the beach. Transprt is very easy frm Valencia airprt, participants can catch trains frm Madrid and Barcelna airprts. There will be a range f accmdatin ptins available t participants. SIP Early Career Award This year we were prud t annunce that the Early Career Award was awarded t a member f the DBI, Kelly Bateman. This was in recgnitin f the significant cntributins Kelly has been in the emerging field f crustacean virus taxnmy and the pivtal rle she has in imprving ur understanding f the impact f emerging pathgens in the glbal aquaculture industry. Kelly als prvides cnsiderable supprt t the SIP thrugh her numerus fficer rles fr DBI and in her rle n the editrial bard f the Jurnal Invertebrate Pathlgy. Mnique van Oers presented the award. 4

5 Item 4. Divisin Travel Awards Students DBI ffered tw student travel awards f $1000USD and $750USD respectively. As in previus years, it was agreed that these wuld be preferably frm ne aquatic and ne terrestrial research areas (dependent n applicants). The DBI fficers cnsidered the 2 applicatins received, but agreed that neither sufficiently met SIP Guidelines fr student awards as their cntent was nt sufficient t pertain t tpics in invertebrate pathlgy and/r micrbial/bilgical cntrl. Relevant applicatins were sught frm ther Divisins but nne were available. There are n 2018 student awards fr DBI. Student awards - It was suggested that the divisin ffers tw awards again and that the award shuld pay $400 twards early bird registratin and $450 fr travel, ttal award $850.
