2 unit intrductin: This unit examines the prfessinal practice f landscape architecture and architecture thrugh lectures, seminars, wrkshps and prjects centered n a prfessinal mentring prcess, the mentr scheme facilitated by ALVA staff, the Australian Institute f Landscape Architects (AILA), the Ryal Australian Institute f Architects (RAIA) and the prfessinal landscape architectural and architectural practices in Perth. Fr the design student, the unit will fcus n bridging the gap between the educatinal experience f design, and the abilities t practice the disciplines in business. Specifically the prcess f the unit will fllw thrugh the varius stages f practicing landscape architecture and architecture frm prject prcurement thrugh t cntract dcumentatin, prject and practice management t prject cmpletin. unit utcmes: Students will develp: Familiarity with the prcedures f landscape architectural and architectural practice, the realizatin and prductin f managed and designed landscapes and buildings as exemplified in bth large and small practices in Perth handling lcal, natinal and internatinal prjects frm bth the public and the private sectr. A basic understanding f ffice management, cntracts and the legal respnsibilities and bligatins required fr the practice f landscape architecture r architecture. An understanding f the institutinal cntext which gverns the practice f landscape architecture and architecture including natinal, reginal and lcal planning plicy and prcedures, envirnmental law and an appreciatin f the nature f the allied disciplines and specialist fields f knwledge. Familiarity with alternative mdes f prfessinal practice applicable t ffice management structures, staff expertise and prcurement, prject delivery, and research and develpment practices. Experience in the frmulatin and management f prject design teams, prject research and prfessinal ral presentatin. Where pssible, pprtunities fr further mentrship and pssible wrk experience and emplyment with the prfessinal ffices. unit cntent: The unit is fcused upn the verall practice f landscape architecture and architecture in the wrkplace. One f the intentins f the unit is t enable students t develp sme familiarity with the day t day prcedures f prfessinal practice, and t gain a basic understanding f the peratinal cntext f practice. T this end the unit spends sme time establishing a fundamental understanding f hw ffices are rganized and run, and hw prjects are prcured and managed including prcedures fr bidding, cntract frmulatin, dcumentatin and administratin thrugh t prject cmpletin. The rle and respnsibilities f the prfessinal bdies respnsible fr and affiliated with the practices f landscape architecture and architecture are presented. Fr the landscape students, this unit is run in cnjunctin with Prfessinal Dcuments unit which prvides greater detail the in the preparatin f landscape prfessinal dcuments including dcumentatin plans, typical cnstructin details and written technical specificatins assciated with the tender and cnstructin f landscape wrks. Fr Architecture Students the unit is cmplimentary t ARCH 5560, Prfessinal Practice taught in 2007 by Sara Stace. While every effrt has been made t avid redundancy in either unit, students shuld be prepared fr sme crssver in tpics acrss the tw units. Each unit will deal with different aspects f cmmn tpics such as the registratin prcess, cntracts, and cdes f practice. Bradly the 5560 unit will deal with prescribed infrmatin and understanding it, whereas 4461 will deal with that tpic in applicatin in practice. 2

3 The weekly structure f the unit is based arund the ALVA Mentr Scheme. In this scheme in which a wide range f practices in Perth participate, small student grups are assigned t a mentr practice, and usually t an individual in that practice. Students meet with their mentr ffices n fur scheduled ccasins during the semester t further investigate a schedule f structured tpics presented in class via lectures, seminars and wrkshps. Fr example, typical ffice emplyment prcedures will be utlined in class, and students will then investigate, dcument and present back t class the specific practices emplyed by their mentr and their respective ffice. Particular emphasis is placed upn teamwrk in this unit and t that end tw sessins have been dedicated t frming teams, the prcess f wrking in teams and the functining f teams. Gd teamwrk in Architecture and Landscape Architecture is essential t the successful executin f prjects, bth within the practitiners metrplitan ffice as well was in the brader cnsultancy and cnstructin team. T reflect this cnditin in the prfessinal envirnment, gd teamwrk within and between students allcated teams will be imprtant fr the successful cmpletin f this unit. Assignments have been designed t develp teamwrk and awareness f team management issues bth within an ffice [particular tpic] cntext and acrss the disciplines that make up typical prject teams [in this case Architecture and Landscape Architecture]. unit staff: The unit will be crdinated by a full-time faculty staff member Patrick Beale and a full-time practitiner Greg Grabasch. 9 unit assessment: This unit is assessed by the satisfactry cmpletin f tw majr assignments and fur minr exercises undertaken thrughut the curse f the semester bth inside and utside frmal class meeting times. Typically, assignments will invlve a degree f teamwrk and individual dcumentatin and will be prblem based requiring bth investigatry and prpsitinal respnses. Assignments will be set that permit an evaluatin f tpics cvered in the unit and will be designed t extend and develp the frmal instructinal prgram. In class time will be spent mst weeks dealing with particular aspects f the assignments and exercises, all f which are assessable. Each assignment requires a demnstratin f the abilities t lcate, select, analyse and rganise relevant prject infrmatin and t cmmunicate that infrmatin clearly, unambiguusly and in a prfessinal manner. Particular emphasis will be placed n the ral presentatin f sme elements f the prjects. Assessment in this unit cnsists f three Assignments. As fllws; unit assignments: Students will need t run these assignment/prjects cncurrently as presentatins and submissin dates will run frm Weeks 3 t 12. These particular assignments will require effective team wrk amngst all grup members. Team wrk requires a substantial amunt f pre-planning, crdinatin, genuine participatin and fair-play. T cmpare and mre easily understand the ways in which the different ffices, and the jbs within thse ffices, perate; c. T develp, where pssible, a mentring rle between ffice staff and the students, and genuinely seek pprtunities t discuss bth educatin and practice related issues pertaining t the respective prfessins. In the past, sme students have been able t arrange practical wrk experience with their assigned ffice, and in sme cases such wrking relatinships have develped int full-time emplyment pprtunities. T facilitate the visits an Office Lg Bk prfrma will be issued t each student and t each participating practice. This unit guide includes a recmmended utline fr each visit and an attendance recrd fr signature by yur mentr. Attendance at scheduled ffice mentr visits is cmpulsry. Students and Offices are encuraged t define and discuss issues and tpics utside thse cvered in the unit utline, which are bth relevant and beneficial. Prcedure Students have been assigned t an Office Mentr grup. Each grup will undertake the ffice visits during the wrkshp time slts [4 t 6 pm, alternate Wednesdays] fr a meeting f n less than 1 hur per week fr 4 alternate weeks. Each grup will be assigned t a separate ffice. The types f Offices will vary frm large t small, public t private. The crdinatr f each team will persnally cntact the ffice directly in Week 2, Mnday, t cnfirm the time fr the meeting n Wednesday March 7 th. in the scheduled afternn wrkshp sessin unless therwise nted n the team allcatin ntice. The scheduling f subsequent visits shuld be cnfirmed at the first meeting. Yur Office Lg Bk may be cmpleted by each student r ne cpy may be cmpleted fr the team. As nted abve, individuals may use the Lg Bk Prfrma as a guide and template fr recrding ntes during the visits. Each grup shuld prepare fr each ffice visit. Whenever pssible, issues and tpics shuld be identified befre ffice visits take place. Make the mst f yur limited time at each visit. The Offices cntribute their valuable time t this prgram and it is therefre imprtant t maintain prfessinal standards in cmmunicatin, as well as cmplete the visits. We understand hwever that this will nt always be pssible. There are tw assessable cmpnents specifically derived frm the mentr scheme cmpnent f this unit. The first is a shrt written reprt f each meeting t be submitted in the week fllwing each visit t the ffice. Each grup will have the pprtunity t deliver this shrt reprt live at sme pint in the term as preparatin fr the majr cmpnent. This requires the students t make and present a 10 minute reprt n all that they have learnt abut the mentr practice as part f the prfessin, its wrking prcesses, management, prjects and future ambitins. In the past several practices wh have been clsely invlved with the prgram ver a number f years have chsen t sit in n these presentatins: we wuld welcme yu t jin us n the scheduled afternns at the apprpriate times if yu wuld be interested in attending. The UWA mentr scheme in this frmat was very successful last semester: indeed students fund it t be the key cmpnent f the unit. Presentatins will be scheduled during class and wrkshp time in weeks 11 and 12. All students are expected t attend all presentatins. Apprpriate prfessinal dress cde shuld be bserved. In preparing presentatins students shuld cnsider: what is distinctive abut the ffice? what is their specific prfessinal philsphy? what is their management style? hw des this reflect in the design utcmes? Be sure t refer key lecture tpics: hw are design/jb teams frmed and managed? what cntracts are used and why? what insurances are carried by the practice and why? t what degree des this practice cnsider itself a business? what future visins r strategies d they have? 15% (f the ttal fr the unit) will be allcated t the presentatin. One mark will be given t all members f the grup. The assessment criteria fr this assignment are: Clear, cncise and cmprehensive cverage f subject material.
