2 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Jannes Linders Sonneveld House Interior Jongkindstraat CG Rotterdam Leen van der Vlugt, of the firm Brinkman & Van der Vlugt, was commissioned to design the interior of the Sonneveld House As in the Van Nelle Factory and the Van der Leeuw House, he decided to work with WH Gispen, who designed and supplied much of the furniture Something immediately noticeable on entering is the lively color scheme of the interior The fabrics for the furniture were selected from the assortment of Metz & Co They were intense, warm colors: vermilion red, cornflower blue and egg yellow, combined with light and dark gray and brown The patterns were obtainable in various fabric types for carpeting, upholstery and curtains The Sonneveld House is a historic example of Nieuwe Bouwen, the Dutch branch of functionalism that emerged early in the 20th century and reached its climax in the years between the two world wars The designers claimed no monumental aspirations, but based their designs on the intended function of the building and the needs of its users photo: Jannes Linders 1933 Main designer, JA Brinkman LC van der Vlugt Molenaar & Co architecten Albertus Sonneveld Naomi Sonneveld House is open at the same times as the NAI: Tuesday Saturday: 10:00-17:00 Sundays and national holidays: 11:00 17:00 April 8/9, May 17, May 27/28: 11:00-17:00 December 5, 24 and 31: 10:00-16:00 Mondays, January 1, April 30 and December 25: closed Please reserve your guided tour at least two weeks beforehand Contact the Education Department, telephone [0] , or fill in the application from on the wwwnainl site Take tram 5 or 4 from Central Station, to Eendrachtsplein Or walk the 10 minutes from Rotterdam Central Station You can buy a ticket to see the Sonneveld House and its 1930-interior from the entrance desk in the ure Institute 2

5 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Strand aan de Maas Leuvehoofd XT Rotterdam After winning a design competition the Rotterdam based young architecture firm MONADNOCK was able to realize this wooden beach-house in the centre of Rotterdam, next to the eye-catching Erasmus Bridge The large white letters on the front façade (strand meaning beach) draw attention to the curious situation: a real sandy beach on the shores of the river The beach-house is constructed in May, with a flexible and cheap construction and will be dismantled in September For the first time in 2007 when Rotterdam was the European City of ure, and will be repeated for three years, so the last year it is erected will be in 2009 The pavilion is built for the annual festival Beach on the river Maas, which takes place from May until the end of September There will be concerts, dance-nights, sporting events and general relaxation time photo: Naomi Schiphorst 2007 MONADNOCK City of Rotterdam toffe_tico The beach house is open from 10:00 am daily, and from 23-May until the end of September 2007 The beach on the river Maas is located just east of the Erasmus Bridge To get there take tram 8, 20, 23 or 25 and stop at 'Leuvehaven' Parking is expensive, but ample and close by at the Erasmus Bridge underground parking 5

7 photo: Olvier van den Hoven photo: Olvier van den Hoven Willemswerf Boompjes XB Rotterdam The building Willemswerf is located on a narrow strip between the busy street Boompjes and the Scheepsmakershaven behind it It is 88 m high, and has a remarkable diagonal kink or crack at the river side This is derived from the street pattern The façade is made with prefabricated elements, of 3,6 by 3,6 meter, to which white enameled tiles are attached Project is not public! 8 photo: MVRDV Courtesy photo: MVRDV Courtesy Didden Village Beatrijsstraat RC Rotterdam The first realization in MVRDV's home town Rotterdam is a rooftop house extension On top of an existing monumental house and atelier, the bedrooms are positioned as separate houses, optimizing the privacy of every member of the family The houses are distributed in such a way that a series of plazas, streets and alleys appear as a mini-village on top of the building Parapet walls with windows surround the new village Trees, tables, open-air showers and benches are added, optimizing the rooftop life By finishing all elements with a blue poly-urethane coating a new 'heaven' appears It creates a crown on top of the monument The addition can be seen as a prototype for a further densification of the old and existing city It adds a roof life to the city It explores the costs for the beams, infrastructure, and extra finishes, and it ultimately aims to be lower than the equivalent ground price photo: MVRDV Courtesy Project is not public! 12 photo: Jeroen Musch photo: Rob Hoekstra Plussenburgh Grote Hagen RD Rotterdam Plussenburgh is an apartment building for the elderly It stands in Ijsselmonde, one of Rotterdam's Tuinsteden (garden suburbs) These Tuinsteden are earmarked for a thorough overhaul during which flats will be renovated and the quality of public space upgraded As the first new building to be realized, Plussenburgh is a key project in the urban regeneration operation to provide Ijsselmonde with a new and identifiable centre Arons & Gelauff followed the existing spatial typology -slabs and towers- but in the façade treatment they opted for contrast with the surrounding predominance of flat façades, galleries and the colour grey by introducing enclosed galleries, sculptural shapes and bright red, yellow and purple colours, applied in a more or less arbitrary pattern The brackets supporting the balconies make the same wavy motion in a vertical direction and double as balcony partitions The three-dimensional effect is further strengthened by the twisting of the steel balustrades Project is not public! 16 photo: Jeroen Musch photo: Jeroen Musch Kraton 230 Lloydstraat EA Rotterdam Part of the larger Schiecentrale Complex in the former harbour area Lloydkwartier, this new building will house the local TV broadcasting station, its studio s and offices The Schiecentrale used to be an electricity plant, now transformed into a creative melting-pot of 80 different film, audio-visual and Information and Communication Technology businesses The complex consists of the 25Kv Building, the Trafohuis, Hotel Stroom, the canteen building, and more living and working space The façade of this building, clad with cast-iron panels has a special pattern, designed by Studio Job It refers to the former steel-industry of the harbour area, and was chosen for its dirty look, and the resemblance to the cast-iron covers on street-holes The plates, now orange, will soon rust more and change into dark brown, leaving rusty, red water, which will be disgorged The choice for this material leaves visitors to think it is also one of the renovated and reused buildings photo: Jeroen Musch Project is not public!
