3 photo: Piotr Krajewski Der Neue Zollhof Stromstraße 1 Der Neue Zollhof is situated at the eastern edge of the Rhine River harbour front in downtown Düsseldorf, near the administrative complex of the North Rhine Westphalia Province The programme for the project provides square metres of commercial space in three separate buildings, promoting a highly open site plan and minimizing the overall mass of the project The placement of these buildings acknowledges the convergence of Brueckenstrasse and Wupperstrasse toward the site, thus leaving it open to the residential district across Stromstrasse This massing further provides a counterpoint to the typical horizontal development of the adjacent sites, resulting in a series of clustered, mid-rise towers Public access unknown! m² Gehry Partners Kunst und Medienzentrum Rheinhafen GmbH pkrajewski_pl 3

4 Colorium Speditionstraße 10 Located on an extremely constricted site in the Speditionsstrasse peninsula, formerly home to a waterfront silo, SMC Alsop's building takes the form of a dramatic 62-metre high tower with two basement levels SMC Alsop's treatment of the external façade of the building, an intricate patchwork of coloured glass, transforms what could be a conventional into a towering mosaic artwork The regularity of the floor pattern is broken down and blurred by the sophisticated and sensuous façade treatment using advanced glass technology and only 17 distinct types of panels To ensure an intense external colour appearance, the artwork is screen printed onto the glass with a reduced percentage of printed area in the vision panels Overlaying the concrete frame, the mosaic façade distorts the internal structure, scale and perspective of the building, creating a highly elusive and pictorial presence on the waterfront (text from website SMC Alsop) Public access unknown! m² Will Alsop pkrajewski_pl 4

5 Port-Event-Center Am Handelshafen 4 In 1996, Wansleben Architekten initiated in cooperation with developer BTV a concept for a Creative Centre in the commercial harbour of Düsseldorf The proposed Port-Event-Center (PEC) is a complex knot comprising of a tower as an end of the 'mediawalk' and a 35m cantilevered unit over a highly soundproof event space It protrudes over the protected former powerstation as a reaction to the perspective of the harbour basin The 'media-port' should be supplemented by a centre for culture and music Individual treatment of the different spatial dynamics and directions is done as usual in older parts of the harbour by an uncomplicated but complex arrangement of unpretentious buildings which in appearance and function are achitectually independent This is a roboust, non-hierarchical urban structure that is capable of being changed and developed with minimum coordination Since 2002 it has been rented by O'Gilvy & Mather Advertising Agency and 3001 Discotheque Public access unknown! m² Wansleben Architekten Modernes Düsseldorf pkrajewski_pl 5

6 photo: Piotr Krajewski House in front of the Wind Kaistrasse 8a "The house from the wind" was realized in Duesseldorf Media Harbor In this building wind manifests itself in a figurative sense, as the media storm that is connected to the foundations of objectivity and shakes at the same time the consciousness, while society is changing and that individuals who expose this storm The façade of the building is inspired by this wind Despite the so-exciting curves, the building remains a totally ordinary building with the standards, which the Company required In 'House in front of the Wind', the wind is visualized as a potential of objects and as a metaphorical element for the development of society Public access unknown! 2007 Zamp Kelp GbR Kaistrasse 8a, Düsseldorf pkrajewski_pl 6

8 DOCK Office Tower Kaistraße 2 A 63-metre tower block was to sound the final chord of a series of high-rise buildings and at the same time mark the transition to the existing city It is located in the former dockland area that was redeveloped to form a multi-faceted commercial and recreational centre Highly diverse forms were tried out in a number of preliminary studies The final decision was for a powerful, monolithic form with a monumental capping This grand gesture nevertheless accommodates s that are designed entirely according to the human measure The contrast between the large-scale and the human dimensions is visible in the use of material: on the one hand rough natural stone, on the other meticulously detailed glass façades All fifteen floors of s can be organised in any way thanks to a central core with all facilities A number of terraces are located on the top floors to enable people to enjoy the spectacular view of the city of Düsseldorf (text from architect's website) Project is not public! 2002 Jo Coenen Modernes Düsseldorf, Gesellschaft für Stadtentwicklung MBH Roderick Tram 708 / Franziusstraße 8

9 Rhine Tower Stromstraße 20 With its height of 234 metres, the Rhine Tower (Rheinturm) is the first construction built completely of reinforced concrete The tower is home of the world's largest decimal clock, visible on the concrete shaft The watch was developed by the light artist Horst H Baumann and received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records The exclusive restaurant 'Top 180' rotates around the shaft of the tower once an hour At a height of 168m there is a cafeteria and below it at 164m an open observation deck These facilities for the general public were inaugurated in March 1982 In 1984, the Rhine Tower was awarded a prize as an exemplary building by the North Rhine-Westphalian minister for urban development, housing and transport (text from wwwduesseldorfde) Project is public! 1982 Harald Deilmann City of Düsseldorf Roderick Tram 704 or 709 to Stadttor 9
