5 photo: Dan Bagnall De Citadel Bordes 1 NL-1020 Almere The beginning idea of the plan of OMA for the Almere centre, 1994, was based on the superposition of uses, with an emphasis on pedestrians and the buildings This block, which is home to the main commercial centre is paradigmatic regarding its variety of uses, from the car park and the underground infrastructures up to the inhabited green covering Portzamparc's development of the Master Plan guidelines has a few changes and the deck is, after all, not a public space, but a bonus for the residents of the terraced houses and the tower The plan's proposal to recreate the density of a medieval city with regard to population and combination of uses has not quite been materialised In the first images of the project there were cows grazing on the deck and the slab of dwelling floated over the commercial streets It is, however, an example of how the uses of urban centres can be combined in many different ways photo: Luuk Kramer Project is public! m², Urban planner Structural engineer Christian de Portzamparc Boele & van Eesteren Eurowoningen aplust 5
6 photo: René van Zuuk photo: Christian Richters Project X De Fantasie HZ Almere Behind the somewhat mysterious name Project X, hides the design of René van Zuuk and his family s residence The villa with a small office space is located right next to the architect s former residence Psyche in Almere s The Fantasy district, an area for experimental housing Because the old house serves as his office since 2004, it occurred that the 2 plots could be consolidated into one garden The garden area is optimized by leaving only the width of a parking space between Project X and its neighbouring house From an urban point of view 3 major considerations were important: the box-shaped appearance of all the Fantasy dwellings, the fixed building line and the pattern of alternating building heights Placing the lower storey half below ground level resulted in House X being lower than the adjacent dwellings, thus fitting in the height sequence The distance to the water is reduced, creating a sense of living along the waterfront despite the rather modest size of the canal photo: Christian Richters m² René van Zuuk Architekten Rene van Zuuk en Marjo Korner Rene_van_Zuuk 6

10 photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Irene van Hooff Villa Kroos Ludenbos EL Almere This villa is located in a new district called Almere Overgooi, characterized by large parcels and luxury villas, showing a rich mixture of architecture styles Contrary to common building rules in the, the municipality of Almere decided to not prescribe a particular architecture for this district's development plan It's astounding however that with so much freedom, a majority chooses for catalogue housing But not for this project! The clients were determined to build their modern dream-house on a plot of no less than 3000 sqm The concept is based on a zigzag plan turned 15 deg on its location, which arises from the orientation of the sun, direction of the wind and views from inside and when arriving at the villa The volume is split up in a higher block at the north and lower block at the south The living area for cooking, dining and relaxing forms the heart of the villa in one large open space, which stands in direct contact with the rest of the house and garden photo: Mieke Vullings m² Contractor Project manager Mieke Vullings Bouw2000 Vidazz private Mieke 10
