3 photo: Olivier van den Hoven photo: Naomi Schiphorst Cube Housing Overblaak MH Rotterdam The cube house (pole- or tree house) is designed as an abstract tree, the total complex (Blaak Heights) a wood (village) The village is like a safe oasis where several functions could take place: small-scale business, shops, school and a children s playground downstairs (promenade level) and living in the cube houses upstairs The strong interaction between the private (upstairs) and the public is characteristic for this situation The inhabitant has a great view because of the sloping windows The complex is in fact a pedestrian bridge, crossing a traffic artery This was an idea of the municipality at the time Piet Blom was asked to furnish this bridge The cube house could be called an architectonic experiment, in which Blom has considered form, aesthetics and spatial effects of greater importance than functionality and practical purpose Living in a cube (the top) reminds of a tree house which is accessible through the pole (the trunk) An archetypical way of living really photo: Dirk Verwoerd Floor area/size m² Piet Blom City of Rotterdam olivier_van_den_hoven The show-cube at number 70 is open daily, from 11:00-17:00 h Entrance: 2 euro For more information see the website wwwkubuswoningnl Take the Subway or train to Station Blaak Or tram

4 photo: Zwarts & Jansma architects photo: Zwarts & Jansma architects Wilhelminaplein Subway Station Wilhelminaplein DE Rotterdam A complex of courthouse and offices The Wilhelminahof was built as a stimulus for the southern bank of the Maas The Wilhelminaplein metro station is constructed beneath this complex at the site of an existing tunnel which had to remain operational during construction work At its deepest point, the 135-metre-long station is 16 m below surface, making it the deepest in the The passenger tunnel was honored for its ambiance and social safe-ness The initial idea was to make a station with a luxurious allure and a high-quality finish in an attempt to upgrade the public transport network, so that it would represent a true alternative for transport by car The station was actually constructed in reverse order First the walls were poured, and served as supporting structure during the excavation of the building site Then the roof of the station was placed on top The mass of the roof prevented the tunnel structure drifting upwards under the pressure of the ground water photo: Naomi Schiphorst Zwarts & Jansma s RET Rotterdam MI_MOA Daily Take the subway to stop Wilhelminaplein 4

9 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Erasmus Bridge landings Willemsplein DR Rotterdam Rising to a height of 139 m and spanning a width of 802 m, the bridge over the River Maas is a landmark for Rotterdam The eye-catching steel asymmetric pylon is not the only interesting thing on this bridge: its concrete, slowly rising unusual formed landings are quite as impressive Solidly anchored to the north shore the road to Erasmus Bridge is not only quite narrow, but built on a slight incline, reducing the structure's apparent heaviness and giving it a slender, light appearance On top are two sidewalks, two cycle tracks, tram rails and two vehicle carriageways Constructed to facilitate the orchestration of traffic flows, the sweeping concrete staircases of the bridge lead up from the parking garage on the north side, extending the curve of the main ramp to pedestrian level and turning the bridge into something of a public space in the sky Underneath the traffic deck, there?s a shop, restaurant, bar and underground parking, all part of the same construction photo: Naomi Schiphorst 1996 Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Rotterdam olivier_van_den_hoven Tram 20, 23 and 25 all cross the Erasmusbridge Under the bridge, accessible from the Willemsplein, on the north side of the river 9

12 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Maaskant Koninginnenhoofd AD Rotterdam On the former embarkation point for emigration to the New World, Bolles&Wilson designed a new landscape just in front of the famous Hotel New York at the Wihelminapier in Rotterdam It s more like an event-landscape with several activities integrated in the area: the Maaskant pavilion with a restaurant, bar and terrace, vent Funnels (situated as if a large cruise ship is buried underneath the green) and a playground The architects used the Holland-America history of this place as a leading theme through the project They explain: Despite the regular dockings of American warships the narrative landscape on the American side of the Dutch-America border remains unexecuted The bar is named after the Dutch architect Maaskant; which means bank/shore of the river Maas Floor area/size m² BOLLES+WILSON Hotel New York + City of Rotterdam Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst Daily from 10:00-00:00 h Take tram no 20, which runs over the Erasmusbrug (stop Wilhelminaplein) From there it is 10 minutes walking distance to Hotel New York The subway also stops at the Wilhelminaplein 12

13 photo: Rob Niemantsverdriet KPN Office Wilhelminakade AP Rotterdam Located at the southern end of the Erasmus Bridge, this for the - relatively tall tower (98 meters, 23 storeys) provides office space for the KPN Telecom company The façade that is facing the city and the bridge is clad with green lights, distributed over the glass They work as a giant billboard and change every day, with the season, activities, festivals or just show KNP-logos The 37 x 72 meter / 2922 m2 monochrome screen turns into a place to a giant public display for animations and graphics It consists of 896 square Osram lamps in a 22*41 grid photo: Marc Heeman Project is not public! 14 Cafe De Unie Mauritsweg JT Rotterdam During the bombing of the city centre of Rotterdam on the 14th of May 1940 in World War II, the original building by JJP Oud was destroyed It stood at the Coolsingel In 1986 the façade was reproduced by architect Carel Weeber at the Mauritsweg, in a part of Rotterdam that was spared from the bombs The design is a perfect example of the Dutch artistic moment De Stijl with its use of primary colours and simple abstract composition of vertical and horizontal directions Next to the Rietveld-Schröderhuis in Utrecht it is a very clear cut completion of the ideals of the movement The ground floor houses a bar and restaurant In the back is a small theatre 1925 JJP Oud De Unie NGHM photo: Rob Niemantsverdriet About 5 minutes walking from central station Leave the train station and walk straight on, in the Mauritsweg It is halfway on the left 14

18 photo: MVRDV Courtesy photo: MVRDV Courtesy Didden Village Beatrijsstraat RC Rotterdam The first realization in MVRDV's home town Rotterdam is a rooftop house extension On top of an existing monumental house and atelier, the bedrooms are positioned as separate houses, optimizing the privacy of every member of the family The houses are distributed in such a way that a series of plazas, streets and alleys appear as a mini-village on top of the building Parapet walls with windows surround the new village Trees, tables, open-air showers and benches are added, optimizing the rooftop life By finishing all elements with a blue poly-urethane coating a new 'heaven' appears It creates a crown on top of the monument The addition can be seen as a prototype for a further densification of the old and existing city It adds a roof life to the city It explores the costs for the beams, infrastructure, and extra finishes, and it ultimately aims to be lower than the equivalent ground price photo: MVRDV Courtesy Project is not public! 19 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Hoge Heren Gedempte Zalmhaven BT Rotterdam Near the Erasmus Bridge, a twin tower residential building, 102m high, it was completed in floors, it has a garage at the base I love the green lights of the garage, it offsets the anthracite colour of the buildings so nicely The architect is Wiel Arets The blocks house 210 high-quality apartments of which 51 are fully or semi-furnished serviced apartments The costs for the apartments per night are comparable to hotel accommodation However, instead of 30 m2 of impersonal space, the occupants have an average of 120 m2 of living space at their disposal Project is not public! 20 photo: Mecanoo photo: Christian Richters Montevideo Landverhuizersplein MH Rotterdam The Montevideo tower is one of the high-rise buildings on the Wilhelminapier that determine the skyline of Rotterdam The starting point of the design was the Holland-America feeling of the pier The building is a composition of interlocking volumes, a section of which cantilevers over the quayside The restaurants and offices in the lower part enhance the vibrant urban atmosphere, while the tower section references 1930s skyscrapers in New York, Boston and Chicago The structure features an American-style steel structure on the lower two floors, a ninety-metre-tall typically Dutch concrete structure in the middle section, and a steel-structure top The name Montevideo recalls the tradition of warehouses that once stood here with exotic names such as New Orleans, Santos, Baltimore and Havana The letter M atop the building is an eight-metre-high weather vane It stands for Rotterdam s maritime tradition, the River Maas and, of course, the building s name photo: Christian Richters Project is not public! 21 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Lupine Zilverschoonstraat HX Rotterdam In this plan, The Lupine, existing stairwell dwellings are demolished, to make place for 120 houses in the social rent and ownership sector The design is focussed on flexibility in the floor plans and in the façades to give the inhabitants a large diversity of houses, ánd to prevent that this new plan also has to be demolished too early The two building blocks are situated next to a park, on one side, and a street on the other The new housing has got different heights, type of houses and different ways to enter the building All these different elements make sure that the new housing is closely connected to its diverse context photo: Luuk Kramer Project is not public!
