5 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Erasmus Bridge landings Willemsplein DR Rotterdam Rising to a height of 139 m and spanning a width of 802 m, the bridge over the River Maas is a landmark for Rotterdam The eye-catching steel asymmetric pylon is not the only interesting thing on this bridge: its concrete, slowly rising unusual formed landings are quite as impressive Solidly anchored to the north shore the road to Erasmus Bridge is not only quite narrow, but built on a slight incline, reducing the structure's apparent heaviness and giving it a slender, light appearance On top are two sidewalks, two cycle tracks, tram rails and two vehicle carriageways Constructed to facilitate the orchestration of traffic flows, the sweeping concrete staircases of the bridge lead up from the parking garage on the north side, extending the curve of the main ramp to pedestrian level and turning the bridge into something of a public space in the sky Underneath the traffic deck, there?s a shop, restaurant, bar and underground parking, all part of the same construction photo: Naomi Schiphorst 1996 Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Rotterdam olivier_van_den_hoven Tram 20, 23 and 25 all cross the Erasmusbridge Under the bridge, accessible from the Willemsplein, on the north side of the river 5

9 photo: MVRDV Courtesy photo: MVRDV Courtesy Didden Village Beatrijsstraat RC Rotterdam The first realization in MVRDV's home town Rotterdam is a rooftop house extension On top of an existing monumental house and atelier, the bedrooms are positioned as separate houses, optimizing the privacy of every member of the family The houses are distributed in such a way that a series of plazas, streets and alleys appear as a mini-village on top of the building Parapet walls with windows surround the new village Trees, tables, open-air showers and benches are added, optimizing the rooftop life By finishing all elements with a blue poly-urethane coating a new 'heaven' appears It creates a crown on top of the monument The addition can be seen as a prototype for a further densification of the old and existing city It adds a roof life to the city It explores the costs for the beams, infrastructure, and extra finishes, and it ultimately aims to be lower than the equivalent ground price photo: MVRDV Courtesy Project is not public! m² Structural engineer MVRDV Pieters Bouwtechniek Rodina Didden JMMM 9

10 photo: Mecanoo photo: Christian Richters Montevideo Landverhuizersplein MH Rotterdam The Montevideo tower is one of the high-rise buildings on the Wilhelminapier that determine the skyline of Rotterdam The starting point of the design was the Holland-America feeling of the pier The building is a composition of interlocking volumes, a section of which cantilevers over the quayside The restaurants and offices in the lower part enhance the vibrant urban atmosphere, while the tower section references 1930s skyscrapers in New York, Boston and Chicago The structure features an American-style steel structure on the lower two floors, a ninety-metre-tall typically Dutch concrete structure in the middle section, and a steel-structure top The name Montevideo recalls the tradition of warehouses that once stood here with exotic names such as New Orleans, Santos, Baltimore and Havana The letter M atop the building is an eight-metre-high weather vane It stands for Rotterdam s maritime tradition, the River Maas and, of course, the building s name photo: Christian Richters Project is not public! m² Mecanoo Structural engineer ABT Building physics consultant Peutz Consulting Engineers & Associes ING Real Estate NGHM Take the subway to Wilhelminaplein, and walk for another 5 min to the end of the pier 10

11 photo: Drost + Van Veen photo: Drost + Van Veen Plaswijckpark Ringdijk KS Rotterdam To the children of Rotterdam, the Plaswijckpark symbolises old-fashioned fun For the new entrance buildings, an imaginative combination of traditional thatch roofs and modernistic plans was developed The Plaswijckpark is located in a lake area, close to the centre of Rotterdam It is both a recreational park for the whole family as well as a historical nature park The new entrance area creates a linear route into the park To emphasize this linearity, the route is given a pronounced head; the restaurant, and tail; the bridge The bridge and buildings, through their similar shape, materialisation and construction, form a so-called family of images The design was developed along three central themes; the identity of the surroundings, the experience of the children and the relationship between nature and building With this exuberant yet sensitive intervention, the identity of the park is reinforced, while the architecture bridges past and present in an alluring way photo: Drost + Van Veen m² Drost + van Veen architecten Stichting Plaswijckpark DvV April till October: 7 days a week from 9am to 6pm November till March: open on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am till 5pm From Rotterdam CS take tram 25, direction Schiebroek to stop Meidoornweide 11

12 photo: Paulien Borst photo: Paulien Borst Blaak 31 Blaak GA Rotterdam Blaak 31 is situated alongside Rotterdam s future Market Hall, designed by MVDRV The office building will be used mainly by the legal and tax service provider Loyens & Loeff for which Delft based interior architects Fokkema & Partners designed the interior spaces A large number of new projects in Rotterdam s Laurenskwartier and the Waterstad contribute to the current revival of the historic city of Rotterdam A new series of buildings for living and working is added to the reconstruction architecture of the 1950 s to make the centre lively and attractive again On this important site the 12 story building shows a striking form, distinctive and recognizable The volumes are slightly rotated relative to each other and shift 270 meters every three floors This form is partly determined by the distance to the Market Hall with the aim of allowing maximum light and privacy for both buildings In addition, the underground metro line affects the massing of the building photo: Paulien Borst Project is not public! 13 photo: Drost + Van Veen photo: Rob 't Hart Waternet Rotterdam Wolfshoek 3011 Rotterdam As the roads of Rotterdam clog up with traffic, Rotterdam has decided to utilize the Maas and its branches for water-based passenger transport The Waternet project consists of a large number of stops for water-taxi s, waterbuses and party-boats On the grand waterways of Rotterdam, these pontoons appear as striking, colourful objects with recognizable and unique appearances The docking stations can be found from the coast of Hoek van Holland, past Rotterdam, up to the 'Brienenoordeiland' The Waternet project s programmatic requirements consisted of docking stations for boats of different sizes, clear stop denomination and an information panel Furthermore, shelter from the, often strong, winds on the water and a place to sit needed to be created Depending on the number of docking ships and available seats, a small or large pontoon is deployed photo: Rob 't Hart 2001 Drost + van Veen architecten Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Rotterdam DvV 13

14 photo: ASFotografie photo: ASFotografie Glass entrances underground parking Westerlaan CK Rotterdam Ector Hoogstad s has designed an apartment building with underground parking in Rotterdam Three glass objects are forming the entrance to the parking garage They're constructed with both hot and cold bent glass At the short side thermoformed glass is used and at the long sides the glass panels are cold bent The glass panels are mechanically attached to a rolled steel substructure The glass entrance with stairs to the underground garage, provide daylight to the third level below ground level Octatube was responsible for engineering, manufacturing and assembly of the three glass entrance buildings The complex geometry of the 3D objects is achieved by using advanced 3D modeling programs and practical experience in the field of cold bending and twisting glass panels The underground parking garage, built by Dura Vermeer, located under a sloping roof with greenery, fits with the green character of the area The glass entrances are stabbing like beacons above the green roof photo: ASFotografie 2008 Contractor Contractor Ector Hoogstad en Dura Vermeer Octatube Nederland Westerpark CV PeterRoos 14

15 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Chapel St Mary of the Angels Nieuwe Crooswijkseweg PN Rotterdam Located in the St Laurentius cemetery in Rotterdam, this chapel sits on top of a historic chapel from 1869 whose outline is still visible as ruins of the original wall Inside, the atmosphere always feels intimate, regardless of the amount of people The chapel consists of a column-free space wrapped by a continuous, undulating wall raised seventy centimetres off the floor, with a gently curved floating roof above This allows daylight to stream inside through the strips of glass that run above and below the wall, creating an ethereal quality of light that heightens the spiritual experience of being between heaven and earth Adorning the intense blue wall are texts from the Requiem in Paradisum in various languages, a reference to the surrounding multicultural neighbourhood Torch-like lamps illuminate the gold-coloured ceiling from the inside out A light beam falls into the chapel through an opening in the roof, accentuated by the rising smoke of burning incense photo: Christian Richters m² Mecanoo RK begraafplaats St Laurentius, Rotterdam PR 15
