2 photo: Roderick Trompert photo: Roderick Trompert Rotterdam Centraal Station Stationsplein Rotterdam Rotterdam is to get a new Central Station This is to be re-anchored in the city centre and integrated in the European network of transport hubs created by the arrival of the high speed rail system (HSL) So a Grand Station of international standing is required In the design, the city is drawn to the new station by compacting the small-scale urban fabric round about so that railway zone and city become a single entity The finer texture with its new sight lines and the mix of living and working will greatly improve the social climate of this zone On entering the tall light-filled station concourse, travellers have an overall view and see at once where the trains are The sunken and widened passage beneath the tracks is a natural continuation of the concourse Platforms have a largely transparent roof some 250 metres long spanning the entire track zone Marking the onset of Rotterdam's 'cultural axis', the new Grand Central Station points the way to the city's heart photo: Roderick Trompert m² Main designer, Landscape architect Benthem Crouwel Architekten MVSA s West 8 Prorail Roderick 2

3 photo: Olivier van den Hoven photo: Naomi Schiphorst Cube Housing Overblaak MH Rotterdam The cube house (pole- or tree house) is designed as an abstract tree, the total complex (Blaak Heights) a wood (village) The village is like a safe oasis where several functions could take place: small-scale business, shops, school and a children s playground downstairs (promenade level) and living in the cube houses upstairs The strong interaction between the private (upstairs) and the public is characteristic for this situation The inhabitant has a great view because of the sloping windows The complex is in fact a pedestrian bridge, crossing a traffic artery This was an idea of the municipality at the time Piet Blom was asked to furnish this bridge The cube house could be called an architectonic experiment, in which Blom has considered form, aesthetics and spatial effects of greater importance than functionality and practical purpose Living in a cube (the top) reminds of a tree house which is accessible through the pole (the trunk) An archetypical way of living really photo: Dirk Verwoerd m² Piet Blom City of Rotterdam olivier_van_den_hoven The show-cube at number 70 is open daily, from 11:00-17:00 h Entrance: 2 euro For more information see the website wwwkubuswoningnl Take the Subway or train to Station Blaak Or tram

4 photo: Jan van der Ploeg photo: Bas Czerwinski Euromast Parkhaven GM Rotterdam The Euromast was built on the occasion of the Floriade, an international exposition on horticulture The tower is named Euromast Euro because Rotterdam is in the heart of the European market and mast because not only Dutch know what the word means but also English, Germans, Swedes, Norwegians and Danes They also use the word mast At a height of 32 m Dutch architect Maaskant provided the tower with a replica of a ship s bridge complete with navigation systems and a chartroom In this room the public could experience what it means to navigate a sea-vessel Made of reinforced concrete and 9 m in diameter (inside) it has walls that are 30 cm thick The foundation consists of 131 concrete piles On these piles rests a block of reinforced concrete weighing 1,900,000 kilograms and serving as a counterweight to the aboveground construction The crow s nest restaurant - weighing 240 tons - was ingeniously hoisted up in five days up to 100 m above ground 1960 Hugh A Maaskant JP van Eesteren NV Eurotoren boeboe photo: Rotterdam Marketing The Euromast is open daily, all year round April up to September: from 930 to 2300 hrs October up to March: from 1000 to 2300 hrs Different opening hours apply during Christmas and around New Year s Day Platforms open till 2200 hrs Last ride Euroscoop at 2145 hrs Brasserie open till 2300 hrs Tram: From the Central Station you can reach the Euromast without changing by tram 8 direction Spangen Get off at Euromast stop Underground: From the Central Station you can also take the underground to Dijkzigt You have to change at Churchillplein/Beurs 4

5 photo: Mecanoo photo: Christian Richters Montevideo Landverhuizersplein MH Rotterdam The Montevideo tower is one of the high-rise buildings on the Wilhelminapier that determine the skyline of Rotterdam The starting point of the design was the Holland-America feeling of the pier The building is a composition of interlocking volumes, a section of which cantilevers over the quayside The restaurants and offices in the lower part enhance the vibrant urban atmosphere, while the tower section references 1930s skyscrapers in New York, Boston and Chicago The structure features an American-style steel structure on the lower two floors, a ninety-metre-tall typically Dutch concrete structure in the middle section, and a steel-structure top The name Montevideo recalls the tradition of warehouses that once stood here with exotic names such as New Orleans, Santos, Baltimore and Havana The letter M atop the building is an eight-metre-high weather vane It stands for Rotterdam s maritime tradition, the River Maas and, of course, the building s name photo: Christian Richters Project is not public! m² Mecanoo Structural engineer ABT Building physics consultant Peutz Consulting Engineers & Associes ING Real Estate NGHM Take the subway to Wilhelminaplein, and walk for another 5 min to the end of the pier 5

13 photo: Rob Hoekstra photo: Rob Hoekstra Red Apple Wijnhaven 3011 Rotterdam The Red Apple is located in the vivacious heart of Rotterdam This landmark contains 231 apartments and penthouses that all overlook the river Maas or the Old Port The head of The Red Apple, is made out of the converging lines of the Wijnhaven Island and are joined together in a pentagonal volume, hanging over the base On the southwest corner is the sleek apartment tower with a glass lobby and entrance on the ground floor and residential / work lofts above In the skyline of Rotterdam, The Red Apple is characterized by its bright red façade lines These lines are formed from anodized aluminium panels without adding paint The lifestyle concept and the interior, is designed together with Jan des Bouvrie The name is an obvious reference to another metropolis, the Big Apple, New York City But the name also refers to the first function of this site since it was here that flat-bottomed boats moored and unloaded their cargo of apples to be sold in nearby markets Project is not public! m² Main designer, Interior architect KCAP s & Planners Jan des Bouvrie PWS Rotterdam KCAP photo: Rob Hoekstra 13

16 photo: Paulien Borst photo: Paulien Borst Blaak 31 Blaak GA Rotterdam Blaak 31 is situated alongside Rotterdam s future Market Hall, designed by MVDRV The office building will be used mainly by the legal and tax service provider Loyens & Loeff for which Delft based interior architects Fokkema & Partners designed the interior spaces A large number of new projects in Rotterdam s Laurenskwartier and the Waterstad contribute to the current revival of the historic city of Rotterdam A new series of buildings for living and working is added to the reconstruction architecture of the 1950 s to make the centre lively and attractive again On this important site the 12 story building shows a striking form, distinctive and recognizable The volumes are slightly rotated relative to each other and shift 270 meters every three floors This form is partly determined by the distance to the Market Hall with the aim of allowing maximum light and privacy for both buildings In addition, the underground metro line affects the massing of the building photo: Paulien Borst Project is not public! 17 photo: Menno Emmink photo: Menno Emmink Brainpark Rotterdam Office Villa Bahialaan WC Rotterdam A building with a dynamic heart In association with future tenant Faasen & Partners Advocaten, OVG sought an architect to design an attractive and inspiring office building for Parcel 4 Sustainability was a special point of focus for this project We were selected to design this through an architect selection procedure Six office villas grouped in two clusters of three serve as a transition between the high-rise office buildings of Brainpark III and the Fascinatio residential area All the office villas rest on a green embankment Half-sunk into this embankment and hidden from the street view are the parking areas The cohesion of the six villas is emphasised by the green embankment, a single building line and a fixed height of four layers Another aspect was the common inspiration of the imagery - especially the modernistic, robust forms and attention for the individual character of the villa through sections and accents photo: Menno Emmink Project is not public! m² Building costs consultant Structural engineer Building physics consultant Broekbakema Basalt bouwadvies Broersma Traject OVG Rotterdam Broekbakema 17
