2 photo: Roderick Trompert photo: Roderick Trompert Rotterdam Centraal Station Stationsplein Rotterdam Rotterdam is to get a new Central Station This is to be re-anchored in the city centre and integrated in the European network of transport hubs created by the arrival of the high speed rail system (HSL) So a Grand Station of international standing is required In the design, the city is drawn to the new station by compacting the small-scale urban fabric round about so that railway zone and city become a single entity The finer texture with its new sight lines and the mix of living and working will greatly improve the social climate of this zone On entering the tall light-filled station concourse, travellers have an overall view and see at once where the trains are The sunken and widened passage beneath the tracks is a natural continuation of the concourse Platforms have a largely transparent roof some 250 metres long spanning the entire track zone Marking the onset of Rotterdam's 'cultural axis', the new Grand Central Station points the way to the city's heart photo: Roderick Trompert m² Main designer, Landscape architect Benthem Crouwel Architekten MVSA s West 8 Prorail Roderick 2
3 photo: Olivier van den Hoven photo: Naomi Schiphorst Cube Housing Overblaak MH Rotterdam The cube house (pole- or tree house) is designed as an abstract tree, the total complex (Blaak Heights) a wood (village) The village is like a safe oasis where several functions could take place: small-scale business, shops, school and a children s playground downstairs (promenade level) and living in the cube houses upstairs The strong interaction between the private (upstairs) and the public is characteristic for this situation The inhabitant has a great view because of the sloping windows The complex is in fact a pedestrian bridge, crossing a traffic artery This was an idea of the municipality at the time Piet Blom was asked to furnish this bridge The cube house could be called an architectonic experiment, in which Blom has considered form, aesthetics and spatial effects of greater importance than functionality and practical purpose Living in a cube (the top) reminds of a tree house which is accessible through the pole (the trunk) An archetypical way of living really photo: Dirk Verwoerd m² Piet Blom City of Rotterdam olivier_van_den_hoven The show-cube at number 70 is open daily, from 11:00-17:00 h Entrance: 2 euro For more information see the website wwwkubuswoningnl Take the Subway or train to Station Blaak Or tram
