3 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd VM Housing Ørestads Boulevard Copenhagen The VM Houses, shaped like a V and an M when seen from above, is the first residential project to be built in Ørestad; a new quarter of Copenhagen The characters represent PLOT s vision of how to create the most light possible and a view for the most residents possible The total project houses 41 shared-ownership flats and 180 owner-occupied apartments To leave room for life around the buildings they lifted the V House on five meter high columns, opening the courtyard to the park area on the south side, and broke down the facades with niches and angles, creating a series of informal meeting places Each apartment in the V Building has a tapering, triangular balcony with a panoramic south-facing view and rooms with up to five metres ceiling height Instead of the usual high-rise apartments the units are designed as loft spaces, each different both in width and height, letting residents design their own individual apartments photo: Dirk Verwoerd m² Structural engineer BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Moe & Brødsgaard Danish Oil Company and Høpfner Marloes_Faber Metro M1: Ørestad of Bella center 3

4 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Northern Lights Amerika Plads Copenhagen Nordlyset (Northern Lights) is the first residential block completed in the new Amerika Plads neighbourhood north of the centre of Copenhagen, at the Port It is a taut, white-rendered block, where balconies and gates have been hewn out of the heavy form which they are instrumental in softening In so doing, Nordlyset is intended to contribute to the impression of a compact neighbourhood, in which the streets are narrow and the buildings solid and weighty, but different The residential block houses rented and owner-occupied apartments, and the lower floor will accommodate either shops or smallish youth dwellings Ruth Campau contributed to the glass surfaces throughout the building The artist s brushstrokes have been rendered into a striped pattern, for example, in the entranceways and around the lifts From the outside, the patterns can be clearly made out on some double-glazed plating fitted perpendicularly to the facade and acting as dividing walls between two balconies photo: Naomi Schiphorst m² Artist C F Møller s Ruth Campau JM Danmark boeboe You can visit the inside square, the inner courtyard when the gate is open Amerika Plads is conveniently located close to the S train stations Østerport and Nordhavn Or take bus 26 from the city centre 4

5 photo: Jacob Gallt photo: Jacob Gallt Frøsilos Islands Brygge Copenhagen 'Unusual yet obvious' is the best way to describe MVRDV's conversion of two grain silos on the harbour front of Copenhagen into high-end housing for the fortunate few The brief suggested filling up the circular silo spaces with apartment floors MVRDV chose to go the other way about the task and hang the apartments on the outside of the silo walls as a second skin of glass, creating very light and almost outdoor living spaces The silo interiors remain as an industrial version of the atrium, roofed with translucent plastic A prime motivation for this inside-out solution was the relative fragility of the old silo walls MVRDV regarded the structural weakness of the concrete tubes as a serious limitation because it made it difficult to cut large holes in the walls for windows, without endangering the structural integrity The 84 apartments now range from around 90 to 200 square metres and the balconies add roughly one third to that as outdoor living space photo: Jacob Gallt Public access unknown! 2005 MVRDV NCC Rasmus_Rune_Nielsen 5

7 photo: Triarc Arkitekter photo: Triarc Arkitekter Thorsgade Student Housing Thorsgade Copenhagen The form of the project takes it's origin in the curved course of the street The building follows this geometry, and is accentuated through the horizontal lines of the façade The tall and slim windows appear to be sub-divided visually by a horizontal steel profile that supports the glass parapets in front of the balcony doors The closed areas of the façade are clad in Rockpanel, using colours that vary in rhythm, according to the division of the balcony doors and windows The ground floor contains spaces for social interaction; study spaces, a common dining-area and social facilities Further along, on the residential floors of the building, the student's quarters gather around a double-height library that provides an additional space for communal studying, bridging the living quarters with social contact areas The library provides a clear visual marking of the building's façade to the street, as well as a visual identity to the surrounding area photo: Triarc Arkitekter 2005, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Triarc Arkitekter triarc private 7

9 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Harbour Isle Apartments Havneholmen Copenhagen The residential project occupies a unique location on a harbour island in a former industrial area, close to both park areas and the centre of Copenhagen To make best of the exceptional location, the project is divided into smaller building volumes, relating to views, solar exposure, and harbour In addition to providing unobstructed view sight lines for each unit, the design creates a variation in apartment types and the corresponding balconies Staggered projecting bays with corner windows provide panoramas of harbour and city, while also screening views from neighbours, insuring the privacy of each apartment The project consists of 236 exclusive apartments with an average area of 101 m2/1087 ft2, consisting primarily of two and three bedroom apartments, a small portion of which are two levels The entire project, including the projecting bays, is rendered in warm white stucco, while the fenestration has teak profiles m² Technical engineer Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma Niras Sjælsø Gruppen pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 9

10 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Fyrtrnet Pakhusvej Copenhagen The Lighthouse (Fyrtrnet) marks the entrance to the new residential area on Amerika Plads With its 48 meters and 15 stories, the residential complex is also highly visible both from the city and from the water Its design is also unusual The tallest part has a distinctive stepped shape on the south, growing narrower toward the top, where it ends in two-story penthouses In addition to the tall tower, the complex consists of a six-story building with a common roof terrace These two buildings hold 89 condos between 90 and 160 sq m Both the tower and its neighbor are covered with expanses of dark-gray slate, interrupted on the low building by large bays and balconies along Kalkbrænderihavnsgade The choice fell on gray slate since it provides a varied play of color and at the same time harmonizes with the area's old brick buildings with slate roofs photo: Piotr Krajewski 2007 Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma Amerika Plads ApS pkrajewski_pl 10

11 photo: Kontraframedk photo: Dragør luftfoto Sluseholmen Sluseholmen Copenhagen The idea for a canal district on Sluseholmen originated with the Dutch architect Sjoerd Soeters, who used his experiences from Java Island, a residential district built on an artificial island in Amsterdam And the Dutch inspiration is obvious Newly dug canals form the basic structure The new canal district was built on eight artificial islands with a pattern of continuous blocks with sheltered courtyards The unified plan's dogmas comprise a unifying principle for Sluseholmen, but at the same time they ensure that it will be a quarter with great variety, where each building will have its individual distinctive features In order to create this diversity, 25 offices were asked to design the buildings The canals and quays, crossed by bridges, wind through the quarter and will make Sluseholmen a different and highly varied part of Copenhagen photo: Kontraframedk Project is public! 2010 Main designer, Urban planner, Urban planner Soeters Van Eldonk architecten Copenhagen_X Arkitema City of Copenhagen Busses 4A and

12 photo: Frederiksen & Knudsen s photo: Frederiksen & Knudsen s Flintholm Care Home Elga Olgas Vej Copenhagen The district around Flintholm Station in Frederiksberg is rapidly changing from an industrial area to a more conventional urban and residential area In brief, a new city district is emerging Flintholm Care Home is a five-storey ellipse-shaped building complex with fifty dwellings for elderly people The four top levels are used for residential purposes, whereas the ground floor contains the main entrance area and all service functions and staff facilities, along with access to the park The building complex was designed by Frederiksen & Knudsen s on the basis of the theme "Focus on Community" That the focus is in fact on the community of residents is evident in many ways, one being that there are very few conventional hallways and corridors Instead, the architects have designed large communal areas that start immediately outside each individual housing unit photo: Frederiksen & Knudsen s m², Landscape architect Frederiksen & Knudsen s Copenhagen_X Frederiksberg Ejendomme 5 minutes' walk from Flintholm metro station 12

13 photo: seier+seier photo: seier+seier Sømærk Peter Holms Vej Copenhagen On the Teglholmen Island in Sydhavnen (the Southern Harbour), a new housing area is taking shape Sømærk refers to a navigation mark, the project consists of 118 flats, half social housing and half private, and a communal house Result of a 2003 competition which had an unusual brief: the CPH harbour authorities had donated an area of water for the competition as they wanted a model project to boost development The money saved from not having to buy land could instead pay for a large landfill that would accommodate buildings and cars The proposal was to forget the landfill and to build an artificial island in the form of a one-story parking house to get rid of the cars that plague the spaces between our houses and to get closer to the water The spaces between the houses and the wooden decks around the parking island encourage swimming, fishing, kayaking - and the great thing was that when the first residents moved in this spring, there were people fishing from their balconies 2008 Tegnestuen Vandkunsten SAB and Finansgruppen Nordic Copenhagen_X photo: seier+seier The easiest way to get to Sømærk is by car Otherwise, one might take the S-train to Sydhavn Station From here it is 15 minutes on foot to Sømærk 13

15 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd 8 house Richard Mortensens Vej Copenhagen The bowtie-shaped mixed-use building of 3 different types of residential housing and 10,000 m2 of retail and offices comprises s largest private development ever undertaken Commissioned by St Frederikslund and Per Hopfner in 2006, the 8 House sits on the outer edge of the city as the southern most outpost of Orestad Rather than a traditional block, the 8 House stacks all ingredients of a lively urban neighborhood into horizontal layers of typologies connected by a continuous promenade and cycling path up to the 10th floor creating a three-dimensional urban neighborhood where suburban life merges with the energy of a big city, where business and housing co-exist The 8 House creates two intimate interior courtyards, separated by the centre of the cross which houses 500 m2 of communal facilities Here the building is penetrated by a 9m wide passage that allows people to easily move from the park area on its western edge to the water filled canals to the east m² BIG Bjarke Ingels Group MI_MOA photo: Dirk Verwoerd 15

16 photo: Torben Eskerod photo: Torben Eskerod Østerbrogade 105 Housing Østerbrogade Copenhagen Østerbrogade 105 is a new residential property set among historical town houses in one of Copenhagen's most desirable areas The building's unique façade composition tells a modern story of variation and sculptural form, taking its cue from the rich detail of the neighbouring properties The reddish-brown façades of recycled brick and the modernistic bays link the building with the neighbourhood The bays, clad in copper and glass, are set like eyes upon the façade They offer a space where residents can step out and look far down the street, as well as drawing natural light deep into the apartments The dense brickwork which rounds off and concludes the block stretches for its entire length above a light glass wall which adorns the tall ground floor The contrast of the heavy surface floating above the light, tall glass facade gives the building a touch of modernity and an unexpected base photo: Torben Eskerod m² Services engineer Contractor C F Møller s COWI E Pihl & Søn Nordea Ejendomme C_F_Moller_s 16

17 photo: Julian Weyer photo: Julian Weyer The Anchor Amerika Plads Copenhagen The sculptural block which unites residential and office buildings in a single overall architectural attitude makes a significant contribution towards creating a dynamic, urban power field in the dense, block-dominated quarter of Søndre Frihavn The residences and offices, which are functionally separated, enjoy the appearance of a single unit thanks to the dynamic, facetted relief pattern of the facade, which encompasses both the balconies of the homes and the larger glazed façade bays of the offices section The entire building is clad with light greenish/gray sand-faced bricks, to create a coherent volume in the new dense urban surroundings The building is bisected by two passages which serve as access to the apartments and to the courtyard with outdoor areas for both the housing and business spaces These passages cut right through the buildings with the exception of the uppermost, unifying penthouse floor, where there are meeting-rooms and generous relaxation areas photo: Julian Weyer m², Landscape architect Contractor Structural engineer C F Møller s C_F_Moller_s Hoffman Construction Company Orbicon City Development Copenhagen 17

18 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Bella House Ørestad Boulevard Copenhagen With a view out over a common green, Bella Hus thrusts upwards between the promenade and the canal waterscape along Ørestad Boulevard Given its fields of different grasses and rows of shady trees, the green could have taken its cue from Fælleden, which is a natural resort in Copenhagen Facing Ørestad Boulevard and with a split gable façade comprising a white rendered section set on the site and a lighter, floating section that points skywards, Bella Hus cuts a svelte and elegant figure On the south and north sides, the flats read as a rhythmic series of solid white blocks that decrease in height from the large scale on Ørestad Boulevard to the small scale in the residential areas to the east The ob-long room windows inset in the white blocks produce a dancing rhythm effect across the building photo: Maarten Helle m² schmidt hammer lassen architects HelleBeelden 18

19 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Maarten Helle The Bow Robert Jacobsens Vej Copenhagen Stævnen (The Bow) is one of the first buildings completed in the new Ørestad South neighbourhood The neighbourhood is planned as an exciting, dense and modern urban area composed of buildings of high architectural quality with a varied mix of residential, commercial, retail and institutional uses Stævnen is placed in the southern-most and most attractive part of the neighborhood and will have unimpeded views out over the large, protected natural area at Kalvebod Fælled As an important amenity, the new building will be surrounded by water to the east and south in the form of a large basin which is the new neighbourhood's border to Kalvebod Fælled A new art plaza showcasing Hein Heinsens's large sculpture (which is already installed) lies to the east of the site, and the future canal street will border the site to the west photo: Dirk Verwoerd 2009 Vilhelm Lauritzen s HelleBeelden 19
