2 PAGE 2 THE MUSEUM NEWS BRIEFS Clancy Rogers Museum Manager Well, its time to say goodbye to another year and to look forward to a new year. We want to take this time to remember all our friends and members who we lost this past year. They will not be forgotten in both our hearts, and minds. I would also like to take this time to thank all our members for their support by donating thousand of hours of volunteer time and money to the Museum. Also to all those citizens of Manteca who donated countless hours of volunteer time to the Museum, even thou they were not members. This past year has been a productive year for the Manteca Historical Society & Museum. Not only were our fundraisers successful, but we achieved some other needed tasks. Those accomplishments included: repaving & re-striping our parking lot, replacing the roof on our main building and installing a camera surveillance system for enhanced safety. These things could not have been accomplished without the support of our members and donors. Our 2017 membership drive is in full swing. If you haven t renewed yet, we hope you will join us once again. Your membership counts. And, for all of you that have renewed your membership, or are new members, Thank You for your support! The museum looked wonderful, thanks to our decorating team, and all our volunteers who welcomed people at the museum. Thanks to all our guests, as well! 4 P AGE 4 T HE M USEUM Docent trip to Duarte farm On December 2nd, ten docents from the Manteca Historical Society visited Duarte Farm near Hughson. The group took a tour led by Ed Schueber, son-in-law of the owner. After the tour, they had an opportunity to buy poinsettias, cyclamen, and assorted decorative arrangements. After the Duarte Farm tour, members of the group met for lunch at the nearby Fruit Yard Restaurant, where they could also buy locally-grown produce. This was the third docent tour for Docents presented Lillian Vieira, tour organizer, with a card of appreciation for the time and effort she devoted to the coordination of this year s tours. Lillian also assists Tommie Gallardo with our museum gift shop throughout the year. Lillian Vieira, MHS&M docent Thank you Lillian! Celebrating our 79th year! Sadie s Salon 508 E. Yosemite Ave., Manteca, CA (209) (209) History of irrigation s earlier days by Crystal Garcia A group of Mormon settlers were the first to attempt to bring irrigation to San Joaquin County. Arriving in 1846, the settlers established along the Stanislaus River and built a perfectly graded ditch, which was still visible in Although the Mormon settlement didn t last long, their irrigation ditch foreshadowed how irrigation could profit the south San Joaquin. Soon after many previous attempts, H.W. Cowell and N.S. Harrold formed the Stanislaus and San Joaquin Water Company in 1895, with a system of ditches along the Stanislaus River from Knights Ferry to Manteca called the Tulloch System, spanning 47 miles in all. In doing so, they distributed water to some 3,000 acres of land in Manteca and Oakdale, allowing farmers to see high yields and flourishing dairy farms, as well as introducing new crops to the area such as alfalfa. What many citizens in Manteca do not know, is from the early 1940 s through the This slip-scoop scraper, or Four1950 s, many farmers in the horse Fresno was donated to the area used a tool museum by Dave Fells. called the slipscoop scraper. This tool was used to utilize the power of horses to move earth and smaller rocks in order to dig canals, ditches and cellars, to construct roads and dikes, and to level land. It was very hard, demanding work. Here at our Historical Museum we were given an insight of a particular family who used such a tool. (Irrigation cont d on page 5)

5 J ANUARY, 2017 P AGE 5 January 2017 Docent Schedule irrigation s earlier days continued from pg. 4 The man everyone knew as Happy was the person that built many irrigation ditches in the sandy soil of Manteca and surrounding area. From the early 1940 s through the mid 1950 s a lot of the farmers in the area generally had some type of plowing, or work with the Four-Horse Fresno to be done. Even SJID would call upon Happy when an area was washed out of the main canals that carried the main flow of water to the local farmers, If they couldn't get it with their heavy equipment. This scraper, now on exhibit at the museum, and known as a Four-Horse Fresno, used to level and move high spots and low areas. It was also used as a tool to build irrigation ditch s before modern pipelines, with iron screwgates. Ground would first be plowed with a team of horses and a walking plow. Then the task of building the ditch banks commenced. First, from starting at one side, then swinging around and coming back through the opposite direction and forming the ditch banks. Then the openings were cut out for water flow into each check and wooden stop gates were installed. The Fells family came to Manteca in 1939, Happy, or (Leonard) his given name, was one of 7 boys and 4 girls in the Fells family, all the boys at one time or another worked on small dairies in the local surrounding areas. This story was passed along by Dave Fells, the sixth of seven sons in the Fells family. Many thanks to Dave, for the donation, and to Frank Vieira, for coordinating the process to find the Four-Horse Fresno s new home, at Dave Fells the museum.
