1 MANTECA HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM NEWSLETTER DEDICATED TO THE PRESERVATION OF OUR MANTECA AREA HISTORY VOL. 24, ISSUE 5 THE HISTORY OF MOTHERS DAY UPCOMING ACTIVITIES: One of the most popular days of the year, Mother s Day, has roots back to the pre-civil War era, when Anna Jarvis, from West Virginia organized Mother s Work Days to improve sanitation and avert deaths, later connected to caring for wounded soldiers, and nurturing wounds of the sole between opposing armies at the time. Then in 1872, women s suffragist, Julia Ward Howe, of Boston, established a day for mothers aimed at bringing peace. Entering the 20th Century, Anna Jarvis daughter, also named Anna, decided to memorialize her mother s activism for the cause and launched a campaign that resulted in a 1914 Congressional resolution called Mother s Day, normally celebrated on the second Sunday of May each year. Though none of Source: History.com A&E Television Networks, LLC 2014 these women sought the level of commercialism that prevailed, most of us today, believe in this well-deserving celebration in honor of the wonderful people who bring us unconditional love! It is a large job, and the CVB and board has accomplished another worthy event for Manteca! Membership drive- has produced nearly 500 Historical Society supporters so far for Thank you! Finances We received a number of donations and memorials in April. We appreciate all, and especially the memorial gifts in honor of so many good people. Program Meetings- Chili tasting, Water History by Jeff Shields of SSJID, and Healthcare by Nicholas Tejeda of Doctors Hospital, and an April program by Karen McLaughlin, Manteca s City Manager have topped T ', our schedules so far. for We look forward to the Manteca Police Department and their K-9 team on May 8th, at 7pm at the Museum. Call for a tour! The Manteca Historical Society presented a plaque of appreciation to local businesses for their longtime support. In addition to being a member, Simplot has donated printing services to make tickets and posters for its two annual fundraisers, and also prints the monthly newsletter for a nominal fee. Historical Society President Leon Sucht is pictured with Simplot employees: Jeanette Farley, Donni Cook, Kathy Marshall, Kim Wells, and Warren Campbell.
3 PAGE 3 PRESIDENT S CORNER DAVE WINEGARDEN It s official, President Leon handed off the gavel after 6 years as the Historical Society s President. Although l am happy to serve as the Society s president, it will be bitter -sweet not to have Leon as our leader. We presented him with a welldeserved outgoing president s award, and he even received a trophy for bringing in new members in his so-called lameduck year! I can t say enough good about him, and Liz, for that matter. Even last year while nursing a sore leg, he was still here on crutches to stay engaged for the good of our cause. I m not quite sure Liz approved of that! Well, it is my turn to take the helm, though I believe, as a group, it takes many to make a difference around the Museum. As with any other organization, building for the future is a key to it s success. We have a wonderful group of volunteers and supporters, and I look forward to our ongoing efforts to keep history alive and well in Manteca. By the way, if you have an interest in volunteering for events, work crews, or becoming a docent, we need you! Outgoing President Leon presents Gayl Wilson with an award for her service as board secretary. NEW PLAQUE FOR COMET S LANDING PLACE The first official sailing vessel to venture up the San Joaquin River landed at Moss Landing in The Comet, carried 20 Mormon pioneers who founded the New Hope agricultural project on the Stanislaus River. The Lathrop Sunrise Rotary and Daughters of the Utah Pioneers recently restored the historic marker that resides on a monument at the park, with the financial help of the Lathrop Sunrise Rotary Club. Representing the Manteca Historical Society was Jeanette Farley, who also provided this photo. A new historic marker for the Comet Landing was presented by Tanya Nieves and Robert Gleason of the Lathrop Sunrise Rotary Club on March 30, 2014 VISIT YOUR MUSEUM! HOURS: 1-3PM TUES.-WED 1-4PM THURS.- SUN.
