2 PAGE 2 News Briefs Clancy Rogers Museum Manager I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members who organized, set up, and worked our June 6th yard sale and a special thanks to all our members and non-members who donated, items to be sold at the yard sale. Your efforts are Greatly Appreciated by all of us here at the Museum. I would also like to thank everyone who worked so hard on getting things ready for our 4th of July Fireworks Sale. I m sure it will be a great success. Please note that during the fireworks sale week of June 28th through July 4th, our parking lot will be closed to guest parking, due to Fire Department regulation. There is plenty of street parking available, though be aware that the bus-stop in front of the Memorial Building is a no parking spot. Thank you, in advance, for your understanding. We apologize for any parking inconvenience during this time period. Celebrating independence day THE MUSEUM Recognized as the 4th of July, or more accurately Independence Day, July 4 th became a federal holiday in the U.S. in 1941, when Congress made it a paid national holiday. Historically, Independence Day celebrations go back to the American Revolution ( ). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies, that were fighting in the revolutionary war at the time, adopted a resolution that declared independence from Great Britain on July 2nd, when the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence. On July 4 th, 1776 delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From that day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence from England. Popular festivities ranging from fireworks to parades, and family barbecues are just a few of the ways the 4 th celebrated. Source: History.com In Manteca, the Mural Society will be dedicating the new World War II mural, named Spirit of America, the second of five murals to be placed honoring veterans, at an event to be held at it s location in the Bedquarters parking lot at Main and Yosemite Avenue in Manteca, at 12:30pm, on July 4th, 2015.

3 J ULY, 2015 P AGE 3 P RESIDENT S C ORNER D AVE W INEGARDEN P ARKING L OT S ALE W AS A S UCCESS Many thanks For the volunteer efforts and support. In this 25th year since the formation of the Manteca Historical Society, there is much to be proud of. Along with some helpful financial contributions, and a community block grant along the way, the Manteca Museum is about volunteerism, and community support. Time invested by our founder, current and past boards, docents, Tuesday crew, manager, program coordinators, gift shop helpers and fundraising teams, is vital to our success! In short, nothing good happens if these precious volunteers don t contribute their valuable time. Thanks to all of those who contributed merchandise, or time for the Museum s Annual Parking Lot Sale. The event went off like a dream and all who came by went away with a bargain! Special thanks go to Tommie Gallardo and Lillian Vieria, Kristin Founts, Pat Metzler, Clancy & Carrie Rogers, Lucille Harris, Evelyn Moore, Cleve & Donna Stafford, Mike Brockman, Walt Silva, John Boynton, Tom & Gayl Wilson, Mark Abram, Maria Gully, Vicki Miller, John Borders, Jeanie & Alan Marsden, Carol Hamrol, Betty Mueller, Richard Benefices, Jeanette Farley, and Dave Winegarden. 4 PAGE 4 THE MUSEUM NEW STAGE EXHIBIT HONORS VETS THE MUSEUM THEN AND NOW Every month or so, the Manteca Museum s stage exhibit is changed to coincide with either a special program or important local event. The newest exhibit honors the various branches of our military, displaying uniforms donated by families of local veterans who have served our country at various times. We hope you will take some time to visit the museum soon to see this new exhibit, and the many others on display, as reminders of our community s rich past. The museum is open to the public: Every Tuesday and Wednesday 1:00 to 3:00pm Every Thursday and Sunday 1:00 to 4:00pm You might also want to visit our Gift Shop to check out the ever-changing inventory of items for sale. Proceeds directly benefit the Museum. In 1918 this church, the First Methodist-Episcopal Church of Manteca, was dedicated and said to be one of the finest new buildings in the town of Manteca. This new building was the highlight of the parish s accomplishments at the time. The church remained at this location until 1954, when a new church was built at it s current location, on Powers Street. This year, St. Paul s United Methodist Church celebrates their centennial year. Congratulations to St. Paul s in their 100 th year. The photo above left shows the dedication photo in 1918, and to the right is how the building now looks, as the Manteca Historical Museum after it s purchase and renovation in (Not pictured is the Mabel Brocchini Memorial annex building). 6 PAGE 6 MUSEUM HISTORY The following article appeared in our newsletter on May 20, It provides a good idea of what it took to get the museum off the ground. YOUR MANTECA AREA HISTORICAL MUSEUM HAS FOUND A HOME IN 1917 VINTAGE CHURCH The deal is done! You are all now the proud owners of the historic church building located on the corner of W. Yosemite and Sequoia. With 8,000 sq. ft. the charming old building should make a great home for our community-wide museum. Much work is needed to put the structure in good shape. First and foremost, a new roof, then window and door repair, or replacement, along with many other necessary repairs. The property at 214 Poplar must first be sold so that funds will be available for all of this work. Your Historical Society s giant step forward has been made possible ONLY with: the cooperation and participation of the Manteca City Council who appropriated $92,946 from the Community Block Grant Funds through RDA: one family s single donation of $50,000, and all of your dues and extra contributions. The church building is still under lease to the Full Gospel Ministries until the end of June, however repairs may begin at anytime the funds are available. The adjoining parsonage house is now vacant and will eventually be removed to make room for parking facilities when there is money enough. In the meantime, even though the house is not in the best shape, it is for rent. DO YOU HAVE GOOD HANDWRITING We are looking for a talented museum volunteer to enter the names of special people who have been remembered by museum members in our permanent journal, located in the museum. Only an hour or two per month are required. Contact Clancy Rogers at if you want to become our Calligrapher! Please help, if you have some time! THE MUSEUM Meet your volunteers Tommie Gallard has become the latest addition to the Manteca Historical Society & Museum s board of directors. She is our Gift Shop committee chairperson, and an outstanding volunteer when it comes to other events, including our recent Parking Lot Sale, which she co-chaired with Lillian Vieria. Tommie is from Seguin, Texas, near San Antonio, and has been in Manteca for two years. She came here re-uniting with her childhood sweetheart, Richard Benavides, after being apart for 48 years. Richard is also an avid museum-supporter, and volunteers his musical talents for events. She and Richard are engaged to be married. Tommie has two childen and four grandkids. She has retired from the Airforce Civil Service after 37 years. Tuff Boy Sales & Tuff Boy Leasing Bus: E. Almondwood Dr. Fax: Manteca, CA Bus: W. Yosemite Ave. Fax: Lathrop, CA 95330
