YOSEMITE AVE. FOR INFO CALL This program will include the dedication of a sign to be placed on the outside of museum, naming the main museum building as the Ken Hafer building in honor of Mr. Hafer. Along with being the original founder of the museum & a lifetime member. Ken was a tireless volunteer and leader for the historical society and museum since its beginning. Without his guidance, the museum might not be here today. A reception will follow the dedication ceremony. Everyone is invited and admission is free. All events are at the Museum, unless indicated. 2 PAGE 2 THE MUSEUM NEWS BRIEFS Clancy Rogers Museum Manager It s been about two months since our museum founder Ken Hafer passed away, Ken is deeply missed by the museum and all it s members and volunteers. Each day when I come to work I miss Ken coming by to do some work or just say hi. When I started working here, I knew very little about the museum and how it all worked. Ken took me under his wing and explained all he could about the museum and its workings. There wasn t a question that I asked that he couldn t answer, he knew more about the history and people of Manteca then anyone I knew or ever met. On the first day I came to work at the museum Ken came in and I hadn t seen him or talked to him in over 25 years, the first thing he said was I remember you, you bought furniture from me about 40 years ago. Ken never forgot anything or anybody he met. 3 P AGE 3 MAY, 2017 MANTECA HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRESIDENT P RESIDENT S C ORNER SSJID PROGRAM NIGHT On April 13th the Manteca Historical Society was proud to host Peter Rietkerk, general manager of the South San Joaquin Irrigation District, who presented a program on the current affairs of the SSJID and health of our watershed from the Sierra to the Stanislaus River. After Mr. Rietkerk s presentation he answered many questions from our guests in regard to water issues in our area. My name is Tommie Gallardo. I was recently elected President of the Manteca Historical Society and Museum. Words cannot express how excited I am to serve our wonderful society and museum. Growing up in a small town outside of San Antonio, Texas I would have never thought I would find a town that would welcome me like Manteca has done. Manteca has become home and I fell in love with the community, and the long history that has built this town. At present we are making plans to clean up and organize, create new projects, and work on event planning for the museum. I am fully committed to carry on the tradition, and add some new and exciting additions that will intrigue the community to become more involved with the history of this wonderful town we call home. Having background working civil service for the U.S. Air Force for 37 years, teamwork is essential, there is no i in team. I will be available for any ideas, comments, questions, and/or suggestions. Becoming President is a responsibility I accept and cherish very much. Looking forward to meeting and working with you for the good of Manteca and the museum. Scott William Brooks was born in French Camp in 1965 and graduated from East Union High School in Manteca in He starred in basketball, then went on to play for the University of California- Irvine. After not being drafted in the 1987 NBA Draft, Brooks played with the Albany Patroons of the Continental Basketball Association, and went on to be named to the CBA s all rookie team. Brooks then moved on to the NBA where he played for the next 10 years, with the Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was a member of the Houston Rockets 1995 NBA Championship Team. After serving as an assistant on several NBA teams, he was named as head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008, where he remained until On April 26, 2016, Brooks was hired by the Washington Wizards of the NBA, becoming the 24th head coach in franchise history.

We need some new hands on deck on Tuesdays mornings to help our Tuesday Crew for a few hours each week with minor repairs and maintenance tasks. No hard labor, and a friendly crew will appreciate your help to keep the museum in tip top shape for visitors. Want to help, or have questions? Call Clancy Rogers, museum manager at leave a message and contact info. You can also just show up at 8:30 on a Tuesday and introduce yourself! Join the Reminisce group in May to talk history! On the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 1:00pm, (May 16th) join in as this group of Historical Society folks meet at the museum to discuss days-gone-by. No need to sign up, just show up! Come and share some old times at the Manteca Museum. Anyone is welcome to come! Bring something to talk about! Reminisce meetings last an hour or two, depending on the subjects and discussions. This monthly meeting is free for Historical Society members and guests. Coffee and cookies are often served. Come on down!
