2 PAGE 2 THE MUSEUM NEWS BRIEFS DOCENTS TRIP TO RIPON MUSEUM Dear Member, Clancy Rogers Museum Manager Please come and join me for our 24th Annual Gourmet Sampler which be held on Sunday, March 13th at the Manteca Senior Center. This is one of two funding raising events the Museum holds each year that helps keep your Museum open for everyone to enjoy. Join the fun and come and meet your friends and other members of the museum you haven t seen for awhile. Remember there s lots of fun, food, drinks, prizes and entertainment. It s a great way to spend your Sunday afternoon and sample some of the great food and drinks that our local business's have to offer. Clarence Clancy Rogers THANK YOU TO J.R. SIMPLOT FOR PROVIDING OUR PRINTING OVER THE YEARS, AND FOR A RECENT CASH DONATION TO TOWARD OUR GOURMET SAMPLER FUND-RAISER On January 25th, about 35 docents, members and guests met at the Pizza Plus in Ripon for lunch before a short stroll to the Historical Museum where they were welcomed by Assistant Curator Connie Jorgenson and other docents who visited one-on-one and answered questions as the group browsed at the various exhibits. The group then walked to the Military Museum which contained several complete male and female uniforms displayed on manikins, memorabilia, and photos of ships, aircraft and service personnel with the names and dates of service dating from the Spanish American War to the present. Thanks to Docent Lillian Vieira for arranging and coordinating the travel, lunch and tours and to Connie and the docents at both museums. by Jeanette Farley Docent & Volunteer
3 MARCH, 2016 PRESIDENT S CORNER - DAVE WINEGARDEN Coming to the end of my second term as board president. PAGE 3 FRAUD-PREVENTION PROGRAM AT MUSEUM WAS WELL-RECEIVED BY MEMBERS AND GUESTS IN FEBRUARY Suzanne Schultz of the SJC District Attorney s Office spoke with 26+ in attendance for the February Fraud - Prevention program. According to host, Jeanie Marsden, Suzanne had us on the edge of our seats with her great presentation. She followed her hand-out and explained the many ways you could get scammed. She was very interesting. There was no shortage of treats after the program, as Maria Gully baked a lemon cake and cinnamon strips, Jeanie Marsden brought two cakes, cookies, brownies and heart candies, while Lucille Harris brought 4 boxes of cookies. We also had coffee, iced tea, and lemonade. Everyone seemed to enjoy and appreciate the program very much! Celebrating our 79th year! Sadie s Salon 508 E. Yosemite Ave., Manteca, CA (209) (209) Tuff Boy Sales & Tuff Boy Leasing Bus: E. Almondwood Dr. Fax: Manteca, CA Bus: W. Yosemite Ave. Fax: Lathrop, CA As we near the end of another board term, I am taking this opportunity to thank several people, or groups of people, at very least. I may not cover all who deserve it, so I apologize if you are not named here, but you may understand how one might miss one who has done something grand, because we have many volunteers that help run the Museum. First, thanks to Leon Sucht, and bride Liz, for staying with us far past your presidential term. Your mentorship supports our success. Next, I d like to recognize Clarence Clancy Rogers, our sole employee, who wears many hats at the museum, and even volunteers time to boot. Clancy has grown to be a great asset for us, and we are pleased to have him. You might say he s worth a million, along with several others, but he works for a modest wage, but give us his all. Our membership drive has fallen deeply into his hands lately, and he has done a great job with it, in addition to Fireworks sales this past year. His day -to -day hands-on efforts and help on our newsletter are just a couple of other things to mention about him. Next, our docents, with Jeanie Marsden at the helm, have done a nice job keeping the Museum open to the public. Thank you docents! We appreciate you passing history on! Our Gift Shop gals, Tommie Gallardo and Lillian Vieira, have really upped our game with the time they spend raising funds through Gift Shop Sales. Thanks to them! Without a Tuesday Crew, we d look like a forgotten parking lot, in my humble opinion, so thanks to Mike Brockman, Walt Silva, and Cleve Stafford, who are the backbone of our Tuesday Crew! What about Program Nights! Thanks to Lucille Harris for coordinating our monthly events and to Lucille, Maria Gully, and others who host our treats and drinks after each program. Thanks to Donna Stafford, our board secretary, who is stepping aside, but has covered the job well for us the past couple of years. We appreciate her help. Thanks to Marvin Brocchini, who has championed recent Summer Socials along with Kristin Founts, Vicki Miller and many others who put on a great fund-raising event. To Mark Abram, our Treasurer, who provides tireless hours to keep us on task with our finances, thank you for a job well done. And finally to our Board and Exec. Committee, and any VIPs I ve missed, thanks so much for your support and guidance as stewards of this great Manteca Historical Society. With your timecommitment, money, or both, I m quite confident that this Historical Society is in a better place because of your efforts. Dave Winegarden, President Manteca Historical Society & Museum

7 MARCH, 2016 PAGE 7 VALENTINE-MONTH STAGE EXHIBIT Board of Directors Each month, or so, the Museum s stage exhibit is changed with some theme in mind, depending on the season, or perhaps a special program night presentation. The Museum s Valentine month stage exhibit featured Hats for my lady, a large collection of donated hats by many, including a collection donated by Sadie Cabral. In addition to the hats exhibit, was the antique Valentines card collection, donated to the museum by Ross and Elsie Brown, MHS class, circa Many of the Valentines Day cards go back as far as 100 years! The Museum s stage exhibit committee is headed up by founder, Ken Hafer. If you would like to work with Ken on this committee, please let Clancy Rogers, Museum Manager, know.
