5 photo: Lapo Ruffi photo: Lapo Ruffi D House Via Dalmazia Pistoia This is a modification of an existing block in north-west Pistoia near Florence A small detached grey stone staircase indicates the new access on a white plaster façade with perforated galvanized iron panels which act as a sunshade (and can be opened to 45, 90 or 180 ) and are a characteristic element of the new stylistic balance, as a chance variation on the elevation symmetry All the shared interior areas are treated with the same grey resin as the staircase to create an effect of visual uniformity There are 2 home units on each of the 3 floors: a living room overlooking the road, bathroom in the central area and bedrooms on the sides of the small inner courtyard Here the windows form an asymmetrical pattern of spaces and adjustable panels which create a dynamic appearance in a quiet space The architecture originates from the poetic synthesis of very few materials plaster, maple wood, galvanized iron, resin and stone which express a clear language when articulated in detail Project is not public! 11 photo: Santi Caleca photo: Santi Caleca Lateran University Library Extension Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano Rome The Lateran University Library in Rome found itself unable to cope with the growing number of books and the increasing requests from users This resulted in the decision to create a new building to house a large, public reading room with annexed archives, easily accessible from both the external plaza and, via a first floor corridor, from the adjacent university buildings The new structure with the reading rooms is volumetrically characterized by a sharp contrast between solids and voids or, in terms of effect, between light and shadow These effects are obtained by significant cuts in the masonry and long strip windows that illuminate the interior spaces What is more, the decision to recess the glazing means there is no need for any 'add-on' form of shading; the façade itself functions as a brise-soleil Inside, the reading room is designed as an open central space encircled by a succession of three ramps Their stepped form is rendered lightweight by the use of glass balustrades photo: Santi Caleca Project is not public! 17 photo: Alessandro Ciampi photo: Alessandro Ciampi Tor Vergata Laboratories Via Fermo Corni Rome In a semi-rural part of Rome, a new element rises above the ground plane The site was once a farm in an agricultural village that is now part of the University of Rome Tor Vergata campus, a grouping of offices and scientific research departments, and a splendid place to work, far from the noisy city Working in a context tied to elements of tradition, IaN+ have managed to develop an interesting experiment in this three-storey building for the hydrobiology department The architecture becomes part of a process of exchange with its surrounding context creating a simple element - a paralelepiped that is subjected to the effects of deformation The exterior surface is rough, as though irritated by the toxic solvents inside the building, and painted red to blend in with the nearby farmhouses A shift in the ridge line produces a double sloping roof that is a hybrid of a single slope and a flat roof A large glass wall projects forward creating a cantilever, as well as a viewfinder Project is not public! 2004 IaN+ University of Rome Matteo_Costanzo photo: Alessandro Ciampi 17

18 photo: Alessandro Ciampi photo: Alessandro Ciampi House C V Via Raffaello Sanzio Giulianova House Capece_Venanzi is a suburban house for a young couple, situated in the diffuse sprawl of the Adriatic coast, between Ascoli Piceno and Pescara The site is tightened between the urban texture of 2 levels houses for single families and the hill, completely covered with "spontaneous" vegetation The idea is to construct a building with an inverse guideline: not oriented towards the city, but towards the hill: a green sea to overlook The underground level is completely dug in the land; the spaces are organized around an inside patio creating a game of connections between the underground spaces, the green roof, the living spaces and the suspended volume of the second floor The ground floor is the collective area: a great sliding glass wall marks the border between the roof garden and the covered living area The space rotates around a metallic stair that connects the ground floor with the first floor The first level is for private spaces (bedrooms, sauna, office, toilets) photo: Alessandro Ciampi Project is not public! 21 photo: Studioartec photo: Studioartec Madonna della Rosa Sanctuary Extension Via Santuario Monticelli Brusati The sanctuary of Madonna della Rosa (Our Lady of the Rose), which dominates a hilltop in Monticelli Brusati, is the most representative building of the typical Lombardian village in Franciacorta Around the main body of the church, built in the 14th century, the apse, a side chapel and the entrance portico have been added in the following centuries Contiguous to the church there is the sacristan s home, a private house on two floors, built in the 18th century The restoration focused on this house, that became a little centre for pilgrims and visitors and was extended with a brand new conference and meeting room, set in the rear part of the complex The new volume starts from a historical stone wall, giving new views of the Po Valley and Franciacorta itself through a glass façade protected by a wooden brise-soleil The roof is flat and covered with a green carpet of grass, so that the extension is virtually invisible from the upper level of the historic building photo: Studioartec Studioartec Monticelli Brusati Parish brunotonelli 21

22 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Pirelli tower Piazza Duca d'aosta Milan In 1950 Alberto Pirelli, the president of the Pirelli Company, required that a skyscraper be built in the original area where the first factory was constructed in the 19th century The project was developed by architect Gio Ponti, with the assistance of Pier Luigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso At 1271 meters (417 feet), it is the tallest building in the city and was built of concrete (est 60,000 tons) Construction of the tower began in 1956 in a time that was experiencing an economic boom The tower was to be surrounded by low lying buildings on a hectagonal plot of land Upon its completion in 1958, it became one of the symbols of Milan and of the national economical recovery The building was later sold to the Lombardy region, of which is now the head office Characterized by a bold, structural skeleton, smooth refined curtain wall façades, and tapered sides like the bow of a ship, it was among the first skyscrapers to abandon the customary block form Project is not public!
