2 NH Hotel Milano Fiera Via Degli Alberghi Milan The project for this hotel in the new Trade Fair in Rho-Pero, Milan, fits in with the city's great architectural-building tradition Two pure geometric forms, which are sixty meters tall and set together at an angle, emerge from the horizontal landscape of the new trade fair The radical pureness of the two buildings embodies the most deeply entrenched and profound of Milanese culture; sobriety and simplicity The two structures are located at the main hub of the orthogonal plan Each tower is inclined at an angle of 5 degrees: the taller tower facing the Trade Fair to the north, the second leaning over mark the pedestrian entrance way Project is public! 2008 Dominique Perrault Nazar 2

3 photo: Matthijs Borghgraef photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Fondazione Prada Largo Isarco Milan The new Milan venue of the Fondazione Prada, seven years in the making and designed by OMA, opened to the press and on May 9 to the public The project, led by Rem Koolhaas, Chris van Duijn and Federico Pompignoli, is a milestone in OMA's long-term collaboration with Prada, delivering a 19,000 m2 campus dedicated to art Commissioned by Fondazione Prada, the project embraces a coexistence of new architecture with the regeneration of an early 20th-century gin distillery that includes warehouses, laboratories and brewing silos, as well as new buildings surrounding a large courtyard Project is public! 4 Gallaratese II Housing Via Enrico Falck 37 Milan Located in the city of Milan, the Gallaratese II housing complex has the capacity to house 2400 inhabitants Aldo Rossi designed the complex at the 'Gallaratese Quarter II' to be a self-contained village which was even dubbed a 'Palais social' by its tenants This coordinates with Rossi s philosophy of architecture His view that the primary sources of all architectural content lie in the school, the hospital and the prison is reflected in the use of primary forms, axial orientation and repetitive elements in the façades Gallaratese II is designed with two apparent axes: north-south and east-west These indicate the primary circulation routes of the building as well as guiding the relationships between the building and the rest of the quarter (from website University of Colorado Denver) Public access unknown! 1970 Aldo Rossi Marloes_Faber 'Bonola' is the nearest underground station The gate to the complex is not always opened 4

5 Pirelli tower Piazza Duca d'aosta Milan In 1950 Alberto Pirelli, the president of the Pirelli Company, required that a skyscraper be built in the original area where the first factory was constructed in the 19th century The project was developed by architect Gio Ponti, with the assistance of Pier Luigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso At 1271 meters (417 feet), it is the tallest building in the city and was built of concrete (est 60,000 tons) Construction of the tower began in 1956 in a time that was experiencing an economic boom The tower was to be surrounded by low lying buildings on a hectagonal plot of land Upon its completion in 1958, it became one of the symbols of Milan and of the national economical recovery The building was later sold to the Lombardy region, of which is now the head office Characterized by a bold, structural skeleton, smooth refined curtain wall façades, and tapered sides like the bow of a ship, it was among the first skyscrapers to abandon the customary block form Project is not public! 7 Torre Isozaki - Il Dritto Viale Cassiodoro Milan In the aspiration of maximum verticality and tension towards the sky, it was a limit to choose a complete shape and concluded at a certain height and we preferred to apply the concept of a modular system that can be repeated in an infinite way with any limit The facade of the module is composed by a triple glass unit slightly curved to outside The vertical succession of rounded forms create a feeling of slight vibration of the volume of the building as it rises upward Elevations of the short sides are fully glazed and show the mechanical series of panoramic lifts going up and down to the various floors of the building Project is public! 8 photo: Marco De Trizio photo: Marco De Trizio Bosco Verticale Via de Castilla Gaetano Milan rticale/ Bosco Verticale (vertical wood) is composed by two residential towers (111 and 78 m in height), These are designed by Boeri Studio (Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca e Giovanni La Varra) The project is included in the Porta Nuova Masterplan of Milan The main feature of this project is about green planning: over 900 species of trees (500 in the first tower, 350 in the second one) will grow on the 8900 sqm of terraces It has been included in the "most beautiful skyscraper" in 2014 photo: Marco De Trizio Project is not public! 10 Velasca Tower Piazza Velasca Milan Close to Milan's city centre, looking up, one can notice the presence of an outstanding profile: it is the outline of Torre Velasca, whose symbolic value one is able to guess from a distance The building was designed in the 1950s by a group of Milanese architects called BBPR after their names: Banfi, Belgiojoso, Peressutti and Rogers The Velasca Tower belongs to the first generation of Italian modern architecture, nevertheless keeping itself linked to the Milanese context in which it was born, and relating itself particularly to the cathedral, the city's bell towers and above all to the Sforzesco Castle The tower, with its characteristic 'mushroom' shape and height of 99 metres, sticks out into the city centre skyline, made up of buildings, domes, towers and bell towers Its structure recalls the Lombard tradition of the massive profile of towers and medieval fortresses photo: Benjo Zwarteveen Project is not public! 12 UniCredit Tower Piazza Gae Aulenti Milan These three office towers and their podium are the largest components of Porta Nuova Garibaldi, a mixed-use development north of Milan's city center Pelli Clarke Pelli s designed the master plan for the 7-hectare development, which creates a new and grand gateway to the city The towers - 31, 22, and 11 stories tall - include 's tallest building, visible from more than six miles away Spiraling upward, the 31-story asymmetrical tower culminates in a sculptural stainless steel spire Like the two smaller towers, the building is clad in reflective glass Their narrow, curved forms enclose a circular piazza, a new public space that links the buildings to their surroundings Facing the piazza, the facades incorporate sunshades, emphasizing the buildings' fluid shape At the street level, the towers are clad in stone Project is public! 13 CityLife Apartments Via Senofonte Milan CityLife is a residential and business district under construction in a short distance from the old city centre of, involving an area of 36,6 ha The development is being carried out by CityLife SpA, a company controlled by Generali Group, that won the international tender for the redevelopment of the historic neighborhood of Fiera Milano with an offer of 523 million Situated in the south-east part of this area the Hadid Residences which have been designed by Zaha Hadid and are composed of seven buildings Project is public! 14 Duca di Milano Hotel Piazza della Repubblica Milan Designed by postmodernist Aldo Rossi, the Duca di Milano Hotel operates as an annex of the Principe di Savoia Hotel, with which it is linked by a skybridge The façade of Rossi's hotel is made up of red brick and has a linear pattern of windows on a plain surface This stands in stark contrast to its mother building, which has a traditional façade with an abundance of ornaments The interior of the Duca di Milano is more confluent with the Principe's style: the units in the annex are ablaze with regal red fabrics, padded walls, valanced windows, sitting areas, and generous desks that match the Edwardian look of the antique dressers Project is public! 1988 Aldo Rossi Marloes_Faber 14

15 Palazzo Montecatini Via della Moscova Milan Commissioned to Gio Ponti between 1935 and 1938, this building soon became a symbol of rationalist Milan architecture between the two wars In the shape of an H with a private opening onto Via della Moscova on one floor, it is ideal for offices with its internal layout, furnishings and external aspect working together in perfect harmony Externally, the green marble walls and the standardized iron and aluminium locks annonce the expressive clarity and attention to detail that can also be seen on the inside The complex offers avant-garde, typological solutions (mobile floors with individual work posts) as well as technological ones (controlled heating and inflatable posts), which Ponti took care of paying great attention to detail (from website Yahoo!
