4 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Gallaratese II Housing Via Enrico Falck 37 Milan Located in the city of Milan, the Gallaratese II housing complex has the capacity to house 2400 inhabitants Aldo Rossi designed the complex at the 'Gallaratese Quarter II' to be a self-contained village which was even dubbed a 'Palais social' by its tenants This coordinates with Rossi s philosophy of architecture His view that the primary sources of all architectural content lie in the school, the hospital and the prison is reflected in the use of primary forms, axial orientation and repetitive elements in the façades Gallaratese II is designed with two apparent axes: north-south and east-west These indicate the primary circulation routes of the building as well as guiding the relationships between the building and the rest of the quarter (from website University of Colorado Denver) photo: Marloes Faber Public access unknown! 1970 Aldo Rossi Marloes_Faber 'Bonola' is the nearest underground station The gate to the complex is not always opened 4

5 photo: Eugenia Silvestri photo: Giacomo De Amicis Value Partners Headquarters Via Vespri Siciliani Milan The buildings for the Value Partners Headquarters in Milan, having pure geometrical shapes, are physically separated but functionally interconnected by footbridges and by a little structure between them, housing the reception The façades have different characteristics: the ones facing the street appear architecturally abstract and rigorous, with a base made in steel, defining a typically urban style The internal parts were made by a composition of steel and glass, to allow a better view on the roof gardens of the lowers buildings The façades at the back, in wood and steel, are related in style, modules, and position The presence of green areas is visible from everywhere in the building, and in the tallest building there is a green vertical structure of 20 metres in height It's a way to obtain green surface and a relationship with nature in a high-density building area photo: Eugenia Silvestri Floor area/size m² Main designer, De Amicis Architetti Porfiri Studio Value Partners deamicisarchitetti 5

8 photo: Zanini Marco photo: Zanini Marco Breath Building Geox tower via speronari Milan The building is a renovation of a pre-existing building in Torino Street, one of the most important Milanese axes Due to the impossibility to renovate the façade "in style", the studio decided to build a very recognizable landmark without overbearing the context Only the structural frame has been maintained The new facade is composed by a metal frame that supports windows and opaque surfaces The second transpiring skin is composed by perforated plates: it's heat exchanger, solar filter and optical corrector The necessity to solve the problem of congestion and cement jungle has inspired autumnal colour of the skin The corner of the building hosts contemporary artwork that will change periodically Project is public! 10 photo: Alberto Piovano photo: Ruy Teixeira D&G Headquarters Via Giuseppe Broggi Milan eghtml The headquarters for the D&G brand, right in the middle of Milan and designed by the Milan architecture studio Piuarch, combines, links and internally reorganizes two factory blocks Synergy between the classic and the contemporary is one of the core features of this design, which sets the early 20th century block with its historic frontage off against the 1960s structure, now new-built in glass This glazed façade is one of the works most characteristic features, running unbroken around three sides of the whole building so as to provide total illumination inside at any time of day and stunning visual impact The link between the two buildings, moderating their different natures with its own rigour, is provided by the new full-height connection with its staircase ramps in unpolished metal plate The ground floor opens internally onto a garden of white pebbles, animated by green islands their curvaceous shapes contrasting with the straight lines of the façade photo: Alberto Piovano Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Technical engineer Piuarch FV Progetti Snc GTEC Sas Dolce&Gabbana Piuarch 10

11 photo: Park Associati photo: Park Associati La Serenissima Office Building Via Filippo Turati Milan This building, located in the heart of Milan, was designed in the 60's by Ermenegildo e Eugenio Soncini for the company Campari It's a one of series of constructions, that in the years of the economic boom, become representative of the new communicative power of the Italian industry The building is distinguished by the burnished colour finish of the metal structures on the facade, the tinted glass of the curtain wall system, the brown paintwork and the smaller volume used as a residential unit During its heyday, the building would have been considered modern and technologically advanced However, in its contemporary condition, many of its undeniably fascinating aspects have proved to be uneconomical particularly in terms of energy saving The new owner has decided to redesign the building respecting the original layout The design choice has been to recuperate the ground floor and to reassign its generous amount of unused space to commerce (although part of the central green area photo: Park Associati Floor area/size m² General consultant Structural engineer Sustainability consultant Contractor Park Associati EC Harris General Planning Habitech Mangiavacchi Pedercini SPA Morgan Stanley SGR SpA Park 11

13 Bosco Verticale Via de Castilla Gaetano Milan rticale/ Bosco Verticale (vertical wood) is composed by two residential towers (111 and 78 m in height), These are designed by Boeri Studio (Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca e Giovanni La Varra) The project is included in the Porta Nuova Masterplan of Milan The main feature of this project is about green planning: over 900 species of trees (500 in the first tower, 350 in the second one) will grow on the 8900 sqm of terraces It has been included in the "most beautiful skyscraper" in Stefano Boeri architetti Marco_De_Trizio Metro Station "Porta Garibaldi" 13

14 Corte Verde di Corso Como Via Fratelli Castiglioni Milan The project is included in the main "Porta Nuova area Masterplan", in Milano Its location makes it an element of transition between the high volumes to the North and the existing urban fabric to the South The façades of the building have different features, chosen in relationship to the disposition of interiors, position in the city and sun orientation The East front on via Viganò, (location of bedrooms, stair blocks and bathrooms) is distinguished by a broken profile which alternates bulges in the form of "bow-windows" and high stacks of floor-to-ceiling windows; the West side (living areas) creates a long screen overlooking the garden In the upper floors, the stepped profile creates hanging gardens The facades are made by different materials: plaster, Indian stone in two alternated finishes, bases in porphyry slabs, wood and metal window frames, folded and perforated copper plates, parapets in enameled steel and sanded glass Cino Zucchi Marco_De_Trizio Metro " Porta Garibaldi" 14

15 White Wave Piazza Gae Aulenti Milan "White Wave" is a building for showrooms and offices It has been designed by Piuarch Studio as project winner of a Competition held in 2006 by Hines Italia, and it is part of of the Porta Nuova urban renewal MasterPlan The White Wave has great and central position, and it's born to establish a dialogue with the different buildings and area of the Masterplan project: it's bounded on one side by "Gae Aulenti" square, but it faces also the new three towers; it will be an access point to the future park (not yet built), and also connect with the lower street level The shape of the "wave" has born from the respect of the heights of the existing residential buildings and the desire to make the new structure a strong and recognizable landmark The building has two, opposites, main facades: the northern, on the Gae Aulenti square, is large and very transparent, and hosts shops and showrooms The Southern Façade on via Fratelli Castiglioni is enclosed by a sunscreen system 2013 Piuarch Marco_De_Trizio Shops are opened every day, also on sunday Metro and Train Station - Milano Porta Garibaldi 15
