2 photo: Matthijs Borghgraef photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Fondazione Prada Largo Isarco Milan The new Milan venue of the Fondazione Prada, seven years in the making and designed by OMA, opened to the press and on May 9 to the public The project, led by Rem Koolhaas, Chris van Duijn and Federico Pompignoli, is a milestone in OMA's long-term collaboration with Prada, delivering a 19,000 m2 campus dedicated to art Commissioned by Fondazione Prada, the project embraces a coexistence of new architecture with the regeneration of an early 20th-century gin distillery that includes warehouses, laboratories and brewing silos, as well as new buildings surrounding a large courtyard Project is public! 3 photo: Alberto Piovano photo: Ruy Teixeira D&G Headquarters Via Giuseppe Broggi Milan eghtml The headquarters for the D&G brand, right in the middle of Milan and designed by the Milan architecture studio Piuarch, combines, links and internally reorganizes two factory blocks Synergy between the classic and the contemporary is one of the core features of this design, which sets the early 20th century block with its historic frontage off against the 1960s structure, now new-built in glass This glazed façade is one of the works most characteristic features, running unbroken around three sides of the whole building so as to provide total illumination inside at any time of day and stunning visual impact The link between the two buildings, moderating their different natures with its own rigour, is provided by the new full-height connection with its staircase ramps in unpolished metal plate The ground floor opens internally onto a garden of white pebbles, animated by green islands their curvaceous shapes contrasting with the straight lines of the façade photo: Alberto Piovano Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Technical engineer Client Piuarch FV Progetti Snc GTEC Sas Dolce&Gabbana Piuarch 3

4 Incubatore per l'arte Via de Castillia Gaetano Milan The "Incubatore per l'arte" is a small public building, about 800 sqm, maybe the smallest piece in the big Porta Nuova Renewal Masterplan However it's a space of great social and economic influence in his neighbourhood The building represents part of the refund to the citizens of the area, from the Town Government and the Real Estate Agencies In fact many social and artisan buildings were wiped out during the works of the Porta Nuova Masterplan Many of these groups wiped out now have their new headquarters and their showrooms in this "incubatore per l'arte" Boeri Studio has designed the project with great attention, although the economic resources were very low The Incubatore dell'arte is a simple parallelepiped, two stories high, all covered by stretched aluminium metal sheets Its color light gray and its metal look, could bond it with the tradition of industrial buildings of the second half of the nineteenth century in Milan Public access unknown! 2013 Stefano Boeri architetti Marco_De_Trizio Train and Metro Station - Milano Porta Garibaldi 4

5 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Pirelli tower Piazza Duca d'aosta Milan In 1950 Alberto Pirelli, the president of the Pirelli Company, required that a skyscraper be built in the original area where the first factory was constructed in the 19th century The project was developed by architect Gio Ponti, with the assistance of Pier Luigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso At 1271 meters (417 feet), it is the tallest building in the city and was built of concrete (est 60,000 tons) Construction of the tower began in 1956 in a time that was experiencing an economic boom The tower was to be surrounded by low lying buildings on a hectagonal plot of land Upon its completion in 1958, it became one of the symbols of Milan and of the national economical recovery The building was later sold to the Lombardy region, of which is now the head office Characterized by a bold, structural skeleton, smooth refined curtain wall façades, and tapered sides like the bow of a ship, it was among the first skyscrapers to abandon the customary block form Main designer, Client Gio Ponti Pier Luigi Nervi the Pirelli Company Marloes_Faber photo: Marloes Faber Near Milan Central Station 5

6 Corte Verde di Corso Como Via Fratelli Castiglioni Milan The project is included in the main "Porta Nuova area Masterplan", in Milano Its location makes it an element of transition between the high volumes to the North and the existing urban fabric to the South The façades of the building have different features, chosen in relationship to the disposition of interiors, position in the city and sun orientation The East front on via Viganò, (location of bedrooms, stair blocks and bathrooms) is distinguished by a broken profile which alternates bulges in the form of "bow-windows" and high stacks of floor-to-ceiling windows; the West side (living areas) creates a long screen overlooking the garden In the upper floors, the stepped profile creates hanging gardens The facades are made by different materials: plaster, Indian stone in two alternated finishes, bases in porphyry slabs, wood and metal window frames, folded and perforated copper plates, parapets in enameled steel and sanded glass Cino Zucchi Marco_De_Trizio Metro " Porta Garibaldi" 6

7 White Wave Piazza Gae Aulenti Milan "White Wave" is a building for showrooms and offices It has been designed by Piuarch Studio as project winner of a Competition held in 2006 by Hines Italia, and it is part of of the Porta Nuova urban renewal MasterPlan The White Wave has great and central position, and it's born to establish a dialogue with the different buildings and area of the Masterplan project: it's bounded on one side by "Gae Aulenti" square, but it faces also the new three towers; it will be an access point to the future park (not yet built), and also connect with the lower street level The shape of the "wave" has born from the respect of the heights of the existing residential buildings and the desire to make the new structure a strong and recognizable landmark The building has two, opposites, main facades: the northern, on the Gae Aulenti square, is large and very transparent, and hosts shops and showrooms The Southern Façade on via Fratelli Castiglioni is enclosed by a sunscreen system 2013 Piuarch Marco_De_Trizio Shops are opened every day, also on sunday Metro and Train Station - Milano Porta Garibaldi 7

8 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Velasca Tower Piazza Velasca Milan Close to Milan's city centre, looking up, one can notice the presence of an outstanding profile: it is the outline of Torre Velasca, whose symbolic value one is able to guess from a distance The building was designed in the 1950s by a group of Milanese architects called BBPR after their names: Banfi, Belgiojoso, Peressutti and Rogers The Velasca Tower belongs to the first generation of Italian modern architecture, nevertheless keeping itself linked to the Milanese context in which it was born, and relating itself particularly to the cathedral, the city's bell towers and above all to the Sforzesco Castle The tower, with its characteristic 'mushroom' shape and height of 99 metres, sticks out into the city centre skyline, made up of buildings, domes, towers and bell towers Its structure recalls the Lombard tradition of the massive profile of towers and medieval fortresses photo: Benjo Zwarteveen BBPR Marloes_Faber By underground: Piazza Velasca is the nearest stop 8

10 Bosco Verticale Via de Castilla Gaetano Milan rticale/ Bosco Verticale (vertical wood) is composed by two residential towers (111 and 78 m in height), These are designed by Boeri Studio (Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca e Giovanni La Varra) The project is included in the Porta Nuova Masterplan of Milan The main feature of this project is about green planning: over 900 species of trees (500 in the first tower, 350 in the second one) will grow on the 8900 sqm of terraces It has been included in the "most beautiful skyscraper" in Stefano Boeri architetti Marco_De_Trizio Metro Station "Porta Garibaldi" 10

11 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw UniCredit Tower Piazza Gae Aulenti Milan These three office towers and their podium are the largest components of Porta Nuova Garibaldi, a mixed-use development north of Milan's city center Pelli Clarke Pelli s designed the master plan for the 7-hectare development, which creates a new and grand gateway to the city The towers - 31, 22, and 11 stories tall - include 's tallest building, visible from more than six miles away Spiraling upward, the 31-story asymmetrical tower culminates in a sculptural stainless steel spire Like the two smaller towers, the building is clad in reflective glass Their narrow, curved forms enclose a circular piazza, a new public space that links the buildings to their surroundings Facing the piazza, the facades incorporate sunshades, emphasizing the buildings' fluid shape At the street level, the towers are clad in stone Project is public! 12 photo: Ernesta Caviola photo: Ernesta Caviola Ice Palace Giovanni Piranesi Milan Ice Palace, was built in 1923 In 1957 it housed the first Italian festival of rock-'n-roll The project aims at transforming this wide area, characterized by a steel cover, into a multi-purpose structure, to house events and exhibitions Renovation will concern the rooms adjacent to the building: foyer, bar and restaurant The exhibition rooms are designed as tunnels overlooking the central room Project is public! 13 photo: Giuseppe Maritati photo: Giuseppe Maritati Blend Building Piazza IV Novembre Milan The intervention on a 1960's building, is meant to be a clear urban narration of the city, thanks to the reflecting monuments, the multiple contexts and the sky on a façade obtained from the combination of three different glasses (float, mirror, extremely clear) The basement is reinforced by the "piercing" action of a continuous reflecting shelter, emphasizing the dynamic perception of the outline and the external space, whereas the foyer system defines the "threshold" between external-public space and internal-private space A new skin, with a changing geometry, will define the way, that from the foyer leads to the different distribution systems, transforming with its simple "plug-in", space and atmospheres photo: Giuseppe Maritati Floor area/size m² Services engineer Contractor Client 5+1AA AI Engineering Zoppoli & Pulcher Generali Properties AlfonsoFemia 13
