2 photo: Libero Cecchini photo: Libero Cecchini Centre of Photography Scavi Scaligeri Piazza Viviani Verona The entire area is used as an underground exhibition, following the quantity and importance of the finds that have been discovered and ones that were able to describe the city's development from the II to the XIV century The definition of the plan was clear on this point: after the necessary analysis the existing buildings were to be underpinned, proceeding with the construction of a new independent structure consisting in a perimetrical wall and intermediary pilasters, supporting a cement coffered large slab, floored with quartz pebbies and with large round windows that were the visual link between the past and the present The architect summarize as follows: "My decision was to allow archaeology to live together with the city: the emptiness of the round windows makes the spatiality of the find explode upwards while allowing the direct integration of the archaeological space in the contemporary space It is the city of yesterday that is living in harmony with the city of today" photo: Libero Cecchini 1996 Libero Cecchini Comune di Verona fcampagnari From tuesday to sunday from 10 am to 7 pm 2

3 photo: MIROarchitetti photo: Elisabetta Selva Longarone Parish Church Via Roma Longarone The church was built in memory of the victims of the Vajont The concept is based on a simple idea: to bring life back to that place by exalting the theatre The church is made up of two overlapping amphitheatres: a lower one that is covered, where the main nave is located and an upper, uncovered one that is thought of as a sort of square from which you can observe the Vajont dam Externally the building is made of reinforced concrete white beams; The composition is characterized by the presence of a ramp that leads to the top of the church, in a perfect reminder of the purpose of the Cross of Calvary The square also has an altar so that it is possible to celebrate mass outside as well, but it was designed primarily as a meeting place The hall inside is partly surrounded by a raised tribune and the remains of the oldest church The room is accessible from various points, both from below and from above photo: Elisabetta Selva Giovanni Michelucci Comune di Longarone MIROarchitetti-com 3

4 photo: Dave Brown photo: Dave Brown Canova Plaster Cast Gallery Via Canova Possagno When Antonio Canova died, Monsignor Giovanni Battista Sartori decided either to close the Study in Rome where many masterpieces were created or to move all the plaster casts, the unsold Marbles, the paintings, the Sketches and all what was in the warehouses, to Possagno In order to host all the above mentioned collections, Sartori arranged to build a Gallery, near the artist s native home This allowed the tourists and the scholars to admire all of Canova s works In 1832 Sartori charged the Venetian architect Francesco Lazzari to plan the construction of the "Collection of plaster casts" In 1957 Canova's work found a more adequate placing thanks to a new building constructed by the Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa The tall cubic form of his addition admits light through windows in the top four corners of two connecting chambers, creating a luminous environment Unbroken walls without windows in the lower portions receive shadow-silhouettes of the plaster casts photo: Dave Brown 1957 Carlo Scarpa Fondazione Canova MI_MOA The CANOVA PLASTER CAST GALLERY is open every day (except for Mondays) During the summer/winter months: / The box-office shuts a quarter of an hour before each closing time 4

7 photo: Benjamin Hochberg photo: Benjamin Hochberg Nardini Grappa Research and Multimedia Centre Via Madonna Monte Berico Bassano del Grappa This project entails glass distillation bulbs dedicated to the celebrated Nardini distillery Two 'worlds': the first 'suspended', formed by two ellipsoidal transparent bubbles that enclose the laboratories of the research centre, and the other 'submerged', a space carved in the earth like a natural canyon that accommodates an auditorium and a foyer The ramp descending to the auditorium is the original matrix of the 'canyon' space It is utilizable as an open-air platform, creating one big auditorium space to host larger events The audience is surrounded by a landscape generated by the arrhythmic configuration of the inclined walls A stainless steel lake, at ground level, atopped with roof lights like outsized water drops The vast reflective surface of the steel creates reflections and brilliant repetitions of the entrance area under the belly of the two floating bubbles The lean columns with varying inclinations create a dynamic tension (text from architect's website) photo: Benjamin Hochberg 2002 Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas Nardini Grappa benjaminhochberg 7

8 photo: Francesco Campagnari photo: Francesco Campagnari Ca di Cozzi Via Cà di Cozzi Verona The last project of Aldo Rossi, located at the border of the city of Verona This project has been based on three main elements: the green open space of the hills, the hierarchy among residences and offices, and finally the reference to, not the copying of, Venetian architecture the two office buildings are reminiscent of the basilica vicentina, a public building par excellence Palladio also referred to a previous design, but it might be that he found great architecture in this difficulty This is where the analogy with the Palladian basilica ends, even though, using the consolidated urban model, the residences are situated around the two office buildings with a minor architecture without rejecting the picturesque The alternation of the red stone and the biancone is the principal characteristic linking the monuments and the urban continuation of Verona in a single vision photo: Francesco Campagnari Project is not public! 1996 Aldo Rossi fcampagnari 8
