5 photo: Jiat-Hwee Chang photo: Dave Brown IUAV's main gate - Tolentini Santa Croce Venice The Tolentini premises are located near Piazzale Roma and was designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi in the sixteenth century and restored by Daniele Calabi in the early 1960 s The convent is recognised for its particular architectural components: cloister with columned porch, a first floor with cells on three sides, and a meeting hall at the margin of the cloister The second floor contains larger open spaces and a rare example of a 15th century walkway perhaps designed by Scamozzi The convent was closed by Napoleon in 1810 and has since been used for various purposes In 1958 the State Property Office made the building complex available to the IUAV and initiated certain works which were led by civil engineers The restoration work on the complex s interior took place between 1960 and 1965 under the direction of architects Daniele Calabi and Guido Bacci In 1985 the entrance way, acquired by gratuitous transfer in 1979, was transformed according to the project by Carlo Scarpa photo: Jiat-Hwee Chang 1985 Structural engineer Project manager Carlo Scarpa Carlo Maschietto Sergio Los MI_MOA 5

6 photo: FD photo: FD MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art Via Reggio Emilia Rome The Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome (MACRO) is a municipal art museum located in the north-east of Rome,, on Via Reggio Emilia The project began in the late 1990s over the site old factories Peroni After an initial phase of restructuring of the site which allowed the opening of six rooms in September 1999, the museum was officially opened October 11, 2002 Since 2003 the museum also have an annex entitled MACRO Future and composed of two refurbished flats of 1000 m2 each, in the former slaughterhouse of Rome, located in the neighborhood Testaccio Since July 2004, an extension is being built in order to present all of the permanent collection These arrangements have been entrusted to the French architect Odile Decq The extension consists of an exhibition space and a roof terrace, connected with the old museum through a fluid and continuous route Floor area/size m² ODBC MACRO haaijk photo: Raban Haaijk Tuesday-Sunday 900am-700pm; 24th and 31th December 900am-200pm (the ticket office closes half an hour in advance) Walk from Metro Castro Pretorio 6

8 photo: Milani Guiseppe photo: Milani Guiseppe Public Garden in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele Piazza Vittorio Emanuele Rome The project has returned a new life to an untended garden located in one of the largest squares of the historical district of Rome The area shows a palimpsest of historical layers: fountains and aqueducts from Imperial City, the Renaissance urban plan by Pope Sixtus V, Baroque villas and gardens A regular urban development after 1870 including some modern technical plants of the Rome Subway The new design tends to celebrate and ideally connect all the historical fragments A set of streams and new fountains keep memory of the lost aqueducts The technical plants in the central area have been masked by some forms recalling elements of the Renaissance Italian Garden, such as a 'Green Theatre', the 'Stone Tree', a ramp and a 'Belvedere' They stand on a paved semicircular place like metaphysical pieces of scenery, on a stage which wants to be inhabited by people photo: Milani Guiseppe Floor area/size m² Giuseppe Milani Comune di Roma EXGRAU 5 minutes walk from Termini train Station 8

11 photo: Jose V Vallejo photo: Jose V Vallejo Panteón de los Españoles Cimitero del Verano Rome The "Panteón de los Españoles" in Rome is a little gem of twentieth century architecture forgotten and hard to find among the cypresses of the Verano monumental cemetery It was designed by Javier Carvajal and Jose M Garcia de Paredes, two pensioners at the Academy of Spain in Rome It is a three-dimensional enclosure defined by the slab of travertine (which welcomes buried there), a plan of concrete and black steel grate At this moment it incorporates the work of sculptors with the relief of Garcia Donaire on the concrete wall It so happens that since September 2013, the remains of Javier Carvajal, one of the architects, are buried here photo: Jose V Vallejo Floor area/size m² Main designer, Javier Carvajal Ferrer José María García de Paredes Obra Pia JVVallejo 11
