2 ,,- Hrati Seymur, Papers, The papers in this cllectin are cncerned principally with the land hldings and business dealings f the Seymur family and the related Bleecker and Tibbits families. The early papers relate largely t the histry and dispsal f lands, especially in the cunties f Albany, Herkimer and Oneida, acquired during the clnial perid by the Bleecker family (Barent, Rutger, and Jhn Rutger). The papers include deeds and leases, surveys by Jhn Lawyer z c (/) () ::tj H 'ti t-3 (/) and thers, statementspenses incurred in cnnectin with Csby's Manr and f\ Ellice Lands (administered first by Jhn R. Bleecker and later by Benjamin Tibbits). Early accunts are with Philip Schuyler, financier and land hlder. There are papers and dcuments cnnected with the divisin and settlement f the estate f Jhn R. Bleecker, including will, inventries f lands and prperty, and accunts with Hrati Seymur. Hrati Seymur had a great interest in.the develpment f the New Yrk State Canal system,and there are a number f papers cncerned with the draining H f the Canaseraga Swamp Lands in cnnectin with the building f a lateral canal. There is an accunt bk giving use f the canal in the year A suit invlving shipment f wheat n the canal in the 1840's (Alden Lee vs.rbert Fer), in which Crcker and Seymur represented, the defendants gives interesting insights int canal trade. The develpment f business in the city f Utica appears thrughut the whle cllectin frm the time f the Bleecker and Lansing hldings t the perid after the Civil ar. There are sme papers cncerning milling at Oriskany, irn manufauring,banking (Farmer's Lan and Trust C.),and the Utica Insurance Cmpany, in which Alexander B. Jhnsn and Henry Green were bth greatly invlved. One letter bk cntains cpies f letters mailed by these tw men n insurance cmpany business. 3 Hrati Seymur. In 1853, a crpratin was frmed t build the Saint Mary's Ship Canal cnnecting Lake Superir with the lwer Great Lakes. Jhn F. Seymur and Erastus Crning were directly invlved in this venture. This file f papers is very full, giving infrmatin n the frmatin f the crpratin, the agree- ment with the Michigan state gvernment, prblems invlved in building the canal, etc. Letters frm the agent, Charles T. Harvey,are very interesting and detailed tuching n technical prblems, labr prblems, etc. Upn cmpletin the canal was turned ver t Michigan, and the crpratin was paid in timber and mineral lands n the nrthern peninsula. A new crpratin was frmed t develp these lands, Saint rry's Canal Mineral Cmpany, f which Jhn F. Seymur and Benjamin Tibbits were directrs.
