3 EDITORIAL - ISSUE 19, AUGUST 12, 2017 KICKIN' IT WITH KRISTEN THE POWER OF NEVER GIVING UP By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS Last weekend I was at an Under-13 Semi Final match between Sunshine Heights and West Footscray. The Dragons finished the season on top of the ladder and the last time these two sides met they won by more than 100-points. So before the match, you would be forgiven to think that the match could be a one-sided affair. However, it wasn t the case. The Roosters put in a gallant performance and won the match by 24-points. It was an incredible game from a group of youngsters who never once gave up. The team kept fighting until the final siren sounded and have now earned a spot in next week s Grand Final. Sunshine Heights will get another chance to book their Grand Final spot, when they take on Sunshine on Sunday. It just goes to show that anything can happen on game day. You should never ever give up. You are always in with a chance and West Footscray proved that on the weekend. Hopefully, players and coaches can play with the same attitude throughout the final two weeks of Junior Finals. Junior teams from across the west will also go head-to-head in the first weekend of Grand Final matches. Nine junior teams will be crowned champions and a further nine teams will be premiers next weekend. The elation when the final siren sounds and your team is in-front is something all footballers want to feel and achieve, whether it be at junior or senior level. Some players at the end of their footy careers may not have had a chance to play in a Grand Final let alone win one, so if you do get to experience the joy of winning a Grand Final and get to hold the premiership trophy at the end of the game, make sure you soak it all in and appreciate what you have been able to achieve this season. If you don t win, by no means has your season been a failure. All teams involved in the 2017 Junior Finals Series should be proud of their achievements this year. 17 UMPIRES CORNER MAKING A GRAND FINAL IS A WONDERFUL ACHIEVEMENT By GRAEME HODGART The first of the Junior Grand Finals are upon us this weekend. After the dust settles there will be some teams and clubs rejoicing while the vanquished will be lamenting on an opportunity lost. Hopefully there is more to our great game than simply winning and losing. It is a wonderful achievement to be victorious and bring home the bacon. There are many people who desire, dream and hope to be in that position. The basic reality of the situation is that only a select few can stand on the winning podium grasping that precious piece of silverware. Some umpires begin the season with a goal in mind. It is usually a particular Grand Final that they are aiming to officiate in come the end of the season. Others cling to the hope of a certain grade that they would like to participate in during the finals. When the end of the season comes, they will know for sure whether they have reached their goal or how close they have come to doing so. On one hand there will be disappointment and on the other hand there will be euphoria. A wise person once said, to a crestfallen fellow, There will always be next year. While this may be true in many circumstances, it may not necessarily apply to all. In regards to both footballers and umpires alike, this simply may not happen. Various reasons may intervene and prevent some from pulling on the boots for another season regardless to whether those boots be black or white. Congratulations to all those clubs and umpires who are officiating in the junior grand finals both this weekend and also next weekend. A special mention should be made of those umpires who have been appointed to their very first Junior Grand Final. Hopefully everyone involved can step up and put their best foot forward. And may the true winners be all those who have strived hard to improve during the season, whether it be the pre-season slog or the long home and away series or tense the finals series, and who have developed skills and abilities and friendships that will last them well and truly beyond their days of lacing up football boots or umpiring boots. Quiz The ball is kicked forward and a player juggles the ball for a mark. The first grab is before the goal line and the second is behind the goal line. The field umpire blows the whistle for a mark as the goal umpire is signalling touched. What happens next? (a) The field umpire says all clear and a behind is recorded. (b) The field umpire and the goal umpire confer to decide whether a mark is awarded or if a behind has been scored. (c) The player takes their kick after being awarded the mark. While all answers could actually happen in this situation, the better answer is (b).
