3 By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS AFTER 14 rounds of football, we have hit the business end of the season. The WRFL s 2016 Junior Finals Series is about to begin. After all the hard work, endless amount of laps around the local footy oval and months of training sessions, it has all come down to this. At the start of the season there was more than 150 teams across the junior competition, vying for premiership glory. Now there is only 82 teams left in contention and the dream of holding the premiership cup up is now firmly in the sights of players and coaches. It is shaping up to be an exciting series. Seven EDFL clubs who are also involved in the combined WRFL-EDFL Girls Football League competition are also involved in finals. Footy fans from across the west will get to see some of the best junior talent in the region during the Finals Series. 5 FOR the first time in 10 years the Western Region Football League s Division 1 Grand Final will be played at VU Whitten Oval. The home of the Western Bulldogs and the heart of football in Melbourne s west, VU Whitten Oval will stage the league s premier division s decider on Sunday, September 11. With the Grand Final being staged at VU Whitten Oval this season, the match has had to be moved to Sunday. WRFL CEO Bob Tregear said the grand final will be a fantastic event to cap off what has already been a memorable year. We couldn t be happier to have the Division 1 Grand Final at VU Whitten Oval, he said. We are all excited to see the decider come back to the ground and hope whoever plays-off in the match will put on a good show. The league had been working closely with the Western Bulldogs for many months to get the game played at VU Whitten Oval. We are delighted that Victoria University Whitten Oval will play host to the WRFL Division 1 Grand Final, Western Bulldogs CEO David Stevenson said. We have a strong partnership with the WRFL and are By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS WILLIAMSTOWN Juniors young gun Matthew Payne is set to go up against some of the best juniors from across the country at the national schools championship. Matthew is a member of the Under-12 Victorian side and will pull on the Big V jumper at the annual competition. The talented player was picked from about 1000 juniors from across the state. I want to play at the highest possible level I can achieve. I am very honoured to be able to wear the Big V and represent Victoria in the carnival, Matthew said. More importantly I have got to know my new team mates who come from all parts of Victoria. Matthew has been involved with the Williamstown Juniors for several years, he began as an Auskicker and has now played club football for the past five seasons. Last year he claimed the WRFL s Under-11A Best and Fairest as well as claiming his club best and fairest award. 6 WRFL NEWS FROM WRFL JUNIOR TO VFL MILESTONE THIS Saturday, Scott Sherlock will run out at Simonds Stadium to play his 100th senior game for the Werribee Football Club, a club he watched as a young lad with aspirations to eventually don the black and gold as part of his sporting dream. On the eve of this personal milestone, Scott shared his football journey with Kevin Hillier. Your early footy days were at Werribee Juniors. When did you start? My first competitive season was in 2001, playing in the Under-12 s as a bottom aged player. Who were your early coaches and what was their influence on you? Earliest coaches that come to mind would be my Under-14 s coaches, brothers Adrian and Anthony Pante. From memory I think we were bundled out in the prelim final both years. They were very good motivators and to this day I still have a fair bit to do with them. Last year of Under-16 s I was coached by John Thomson and although we fell short in the Grand Final, I found that in this year I was really taught the meaning of hard work. Personal success: you won the WRFL Under-14A B&F in Any others? The year before I happened to win the league Under- 14B B&F, this along with club best and fairest awards along the journey too. How do you look back on your time at the Western Jets? Great experience all in all. Looking back, there are a lot of current and former AFL players that I got to play with or against. Ultimately it was a stepping stone into the VFL pathway for me. What are your memories of your senior debut at Werribee? It was Round 4 of the season and we played Collingwood in a night match at Werribee. I remember not knowing what to do with myself all day in the lead Scott Sherlock in action for the Werribee Tigers, he will play his 100th match this weekend. Picture: JONATHAN DIMAGGIO up to the game and the hours just dragging on. Finally arriving at the Scott Sherlock won the WRFL s 2014 Under-14A Best and Fairest. Picture: SUPPLIED ground the nerves really started to kick in. They settled pretty quickly as I got into the game. Turned out to be a pretty disappointing loss in the end, but definitely a game I will remember for the rest of my life. What advice would you give to the young blokes who still have the AFL dream on what they should do at VFL level? I would have to say don t give up. More and more guys are being picked up from the VFL every year. Make the sacrifices you need in order to keep improving your game, and be a sponge to all of the coaches you have around you. Biggest one is to continually play for the team and not for yourself. Guys that play selfish footy get found out pretty quickly. Highlights from your 100 games? Playing my first game for the club is definitely the number one. Playing in some pretty close finals over the years and just being part of such a great club is a highlight in itself. Will you go back and play local when your VFL days are over? It is something I have always looked forward to, but at the same time I want to get everything I can out of playing for Werribee. While I would still take it pretty seriously, it excites me that one day I ll be able to have a kick with some close mates that I ve never had the opportunity to play with. 4

12 DIVISION 1 ROUND WRAP SENIORS WARRIORS WIN BIG, SAINTS IN THE FIVE By KEVIN HILLIER THE casualty count is rising as the finals aspirants emerge in the final weeks of the 2016 season and we are in for an interesting ride in the next few weeks. Hopefully with a surprise or two to keep players and supporters on our toes. As predicted the Saints have jumped into the five and Spotswood has fallen out. Spotswood has been hard hit by injury and in another low scoring match went down to Altona last week. This week they head to Wyndhamvale, a side that beat them earlier in the year. Both sides have struggled to score in recent weeks and while the Woodsmen look a shadow of their former selves, I think they will just get home, otherwise their season is shot to pieces. Pride is all Sunshine have to play for and that won t be enough to get them the points against Hoppers Crossing. The Warriors have been tinkering with their line up, and will continue to explore options and configurations between now and the start of the finals. The availability of Ashlin Brown and Jackson Viola will be very important now and in a few weeks time. The thing to like about the Warriors is their flexibility and their depth, both of which are looking good at this stage. Deer Park pair Brendan Fevola and Jase Perkins look to be fighting out the race for the Andrew Gibson medal, and causing backman headaches in the process. The Lions biggest headache is finding their best team and being able to get it on the park. They will have too DIVISION 1 SENIORS TEAM P W L D PTS % Hoppers Crossing Deer Park Werribee Districts Altona St Albans Spotswood Albion many scoring options and too much class for Altona this week. The Vikings can keep their top three hopes alive with a win, but that is not going to happen. In the radio match of the day Albion host St Albans. The Saints found a new spearhead last week in the absence of Michael Spooner, Lachie Baddeley stepped up, just the kind of versatility they will need to make the finals, and do some damage. Albion without skipper Josh Bench can still slip into fifth position if the cards fall their way. While miracles do happen in sport, this one is not going to materialize. Werribee Districts has the bye and a chance to reload for the final three games of the season against St. Albans, Hoppers and Spotswood. Coach Paul Chapman won t be playing after tearing his hamstring so they need Dean, Halloran, Panayi, Morrow, Prismall and Black to name but a few, all rested and refreshed if they are going to have a deep finals series. Sunshine Wyndhamvale The last time Wyndhamvale played Spotswood, they scored a win. They two clubs go head-to-head today. Picture: DARRELL JONES 10 DIVISION ONE

13 EVEN SPREAD IN WARRIORS DEMOLITION By CONNOR PAIN FOURTEEN individual goal kickers have helped Hoppers Crossing demolish Wyndhamvale, (193) to 2.1. (13). The massive win gives the Warriors a huge percentage boost, which could be vital if Hoppers are tied with the Werribee Districts on the ladder at the end of the season. James Spark was the Warriors leading scorer with four majors in the 180-point thrashing. The home side led from start to finish. The game was over at the first break, Hoppers held a 52 to 0 lead. For the Falcons, the result is another disappointment in its winless season which will most likely end with Wyndhamvale winning the wooden spoon. The Warriors will now travel to face Sunshine, while Wyndhamvale will host Spotswood. A six goal to one blitz over the second and third quarters helped the Altona Vikings cruise to a 71-point victory over Spotswood. The Vikings inaccurate kicking kept the score from blowing out even further, as the third-placed side recorded 20 behinds. The (98) to 4.3. (27) win sees Altona extend its place in the top four to two games, ahead of fifth-placed Deer Park. The Woodsmen s 10th loss of the season keeps the side at eighth position on ladder, a game behind Albion. In Round 15 action, Altona will battle it out against Deer Park. DIVISION 1 RESERVES TEAM P W L D PTS % Hoppers Crossing Werribee Districts Altona Sunshine Deer Park St Albans Albion DIVISION 1 ROUND WRAP RESERVES Despite trailing after the first quarter, Sunshine was able to scrape over the line and earn a hard fought five-point win over St Albans. Both sides recorded 10 plus behinds as the low-scoring game saw neither get above 50-points. Bradley Busuttil was the game s only multiple goal kicker, booting three majors. The (49) to (44) victory gives the Kangaroos a one game lead over Deer Park on the ladder with just four games to go. St. Albans will look to bounce back from the close loss and maintain its gap from the bottom three against Albion. Ryan Harrington and Andrew Taylor s six combined goals (three each) helped the second-placed Werribee Districts earn its 11th win of the season, downing Deer Park (72) to 6.5. (44). The Districts were rarely troubled, but could not blow out the Lions, running out 28-point victors. Werribee sits just a game behind Hoppers Crossing on the ladder, but are ahead of Altona by two matches. The Districts have this round s bye, and should use it to refresh and get ready for its charge at a premiership. 22 DIVISION 2 ROUND WRAP SENIORS EAGLES REGAIN TOP SPOT AFTER CLASSY WIN By DANIEL MOSCA THE Yarraville Seddon Eagles regained first place on the ladder after sending a message to the North Footscray Red Devils to the tune of 38-points on Saturday. In a rematch between two of the league s elite teams, the visiting Eagles turned out perhaps their most impressive performance of the season, booting accurately and smothering the Red Devil s attack throughout the day. The two teams last met in round 8, a match in which Yarraville Seddon relinquished first place to North Footscray after blowing a number of chances in front of goal and letting the Red Devils dictate the tempo. They more than made up for it on Saturday, booting an accurate 16.7 and bottling up North Footscray whenever they got their hands on the footy. After a mostly tightly contested first quarter in which the Red Devils took a 2-point lead into the first break and held strong through most of the second quarter, the visiting Eagles broke the game open late in the first half after rattling off five straight goals in the last seven minutes. The 5- goal flurry by the visitors was kick-started by Mason Angove, who cut North Footscray s lead to 5-points after goaling from just inside-50. Less than a minute later, Angove found forward Scott Krakouer 10 metres out who marked and goaled to give the Eagles the lead for good. Despite conceding a goal early in the second half from a 50-metre penalty, the Eagles wasted no time displaying their dominance over North Footscray for the rest of the contest. They kicked eight of the next 12 goals while working their game plan and applying tantalising DIVISION 2 SENIORS TEAM P W L D PTS % Yarraville Seddon Caroline Springs North Footscray Glenorden Albanvale pressure on the home side. North Footscray will be forced to go back to the drawing board after being outclassed by the visitors all day and struggling to deal with their forward line pressure. Yarraville Seddon, meanwhile, played calm and poised football. Perhaps their most impressive display came midway through the second quarter. After conceding a behind, the Eagles went coast-to-coast through Chris Topalidis, who broke the lines and played on from off half-back. The Eagles went down the boundary line and into their forward 50 quickly before finding forward Andrew Panow in the goal square who played on and goaled to extend their lead to 25-points. The Eagles then banged on 6 goals in the final term to come out 38-point victors and reclaim top spot in the standings. The loss was just North Footscray s second of the season, yet they dropped from first to third after Caroline Springs also leapfrogged them after their win over Manor Lakes. 23 YARRAVILLE Seddon are flying high after they won the local derby against North Footscray at Hansen Reserve at the weekend. In a carbon copy to the Eagles match against the Lakers a few weeks earlier, the away side managed to overcome a third quarter deficit to score an unlikely win, keeping their undefeated status intact. North Footscray held the lead for the first three quarters before Yarraville Seddon came back in the fourth, winning the match by 5-points. North Footscray looked the better side at three quarter time as they held on to a 12-point lead at the last change, but it wasn t to be. Their lack of defence in the last term proved costly as the Eagles managed to kick four goals to one to win the match. The Devil s played excellent footy throughout most of the match and can t be written off in the finals, but they would be disappointed with how they didn t finish off the game. Two of North Footscray s best players were Manuel Naci and Matthew Bellingham. Shane Chapple and Paul Azar from the Eagles, were two players who put in 100 per cent effort across the match. Yarraville Seddon may be looking like they are on the home stretch to walk into the finals undefeated after this match, but their final match for the home and away season will be against Caroline Springs, who right now, are looking like the only other team who could potentially snare a win. DIVISION 2 ROUND WRAP RESERVES EAGLES COME FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT DEVILS By DAYLE DUNSHEA DIVISION 2 RESERVES TEAM P W L D PTS % Yarraville Seddon Caroline Springs North Footscray Glenorden Albanvale West Footscray Manor Lakes Caroline Springs had another percentage boosting win at the weekend as they defeated Manor Lakes at Town Centre Oval. The final scores were (213) to 0.4. (4). Lakers forward Michael Saker bagged nine goals in the demolition. Albanvale hosted a close match against West Footscray, after losing the first half the Cobras fired up and dominated the rest of the match, winning (63) to 7.7. (49). This round, Manor Lakes will be playing Albanvale at Howqua Reserve, the last time these two met was one of the Storms best games only losing by 7-points. Glen Orden will be travelling to Hansen Reserve to play North Footscray, if the Devils win, percentage will separate them and the Lakers who have the bye this weekend. Finally, the Yarraville Seddon Eagles will head into its Round 15 match as favourites when they take on West Footscray at Yarraville Oval. 32 DIVISION 3 ROUND WRAP SENIORS POWER POUNCE ON SHARKS, DRAGONS FIRE By ALEX KARAVAS WITH finals fast approaching there is a log jam with the top six sides all looking for valuable wins and form coming into the few rounds of footy. In a clash of second versus fourth Newport Power travelled to Featherbrook Reserve to take on Sanctuary Lakes. In an evenly poised game all afternoon, the Power had the ascendancy in the first half going into the main break 19-points. The Sharks came out all blazing with a 5.3 third quarter to take a six point lead going into the last quarter. The Power then took control and managed to kick five majors of their own to set up a valuable 17-point win. Jehad Haddara and Khaled El Haouli both kicked three for the Power with Haddara named best afield for the Power. For Sanctuary Lakes two goals to Russell Rich, Michael Hall, Steven Neralic, John Prudek and Jai Granvillani who was also named best afield for the Sharks. Sunshine Heights scored an impressive win against Tarneit at the weekend. They take on Braybrook today. Picture: DARRELL JONES DIVISION 3 SENIORS TEAM P W L D PTS % Parkside Newport Power Tarneit Sanctuary Lakes Wyndham Suns Sunshine Heights North Sunshine Braybrook Laverton Third placed Tarneit travelled to Ainsworth Reserve to take on sixth placed Sunshine Heights. In another game that had merit on the finals race, it was Heights who grabbed a three point lead going into the main break, after trailing by 25 points at quarter time. The Dragons continued on their ascendancy with a 14-point lead going into the last term. That s the way it stayed with Sunshine Heights running away with a 15-point win and adding pressure on the teams above. Wyndham Suns travelled to bottom placed Laverton as they looked to add pressure on the four teams above them. The game was a close affair in the first half with the Magpies taking a two point lead into the main break. The Suns kicked away in the third with a six goal quarter to take a 33-point lead going into the last, and from there they run away with it comfortably with a 41-point win. Rhys Kirk with the pick of the goals kicking six for the Suns, whilst for the Magpies Richard Mulroy wasn t to be outdone kicking five himself. In the final game of the round, bitter rivals Braybrook and North Sunshine squared off at Dempster Park. The game was neck and neck all afternoon with the Roadrunners taking a three point lead going into the main break. The Brookers then kicked four majors in the third to set up a six point lead going into the last. From there it was a tight contest with the roadrunners running away with a one point win DIVISION THREE

33 WITH ladder-leaders Parkside having the week off, Tarneit clinched top spot and evened up the standings with a thumping victory over Sunshine Heights. Their 156-point demolition job sees them sit level on points with Parkside; however their superior percentage puts them on top with just four rounds remaining. The 2016 season draws to an end in the next month and it is shaping up to be a very tight race between the aforementioned sides and third-placed Wyndham Suns. The Suns themselves kept in touch with a relatively tough win against the lowly Laverton. Despite finishing 80-point victors, the Suns struggled to put their opponents away until mid-way through the final quarter. Corey Thomas had a tremendous breakout game, kicking a career-high eight goals to lead the attacking charge. He was assisted up forward by the consistent Brett Cook who booted five. For Laverton, Adam Cowley tried his hardest to keep them in the contest with four goals of his own. The win makes it near-impossible for Wyndham to drop out of the top three and keeps their minor-premiership hopes alive. Their lack of ruthlessness throughout the season may come back to bite them at the pointy end of the season, with percentage the only roadblock between them and first place. Newport continues to fight for finals action, notching their sixth win of 2016, beating Sanctuary Lakes by 62-points at Featherbrook Reserve. The Power lead at every change off the back of five majors from Khaled Hoblos and four from Ali El Houli. DIVISION 3 ROUND WRAP RESERVES TARNEIT MAKE THEIR PREMIERSHIP MOVE By RHYS WOOSNAM DIVISION 3 RESERVES TEAM P W L D PTS % Parkside Tarneit Wyndham Suns Sanctuary Lakes Newport Power Sunshine Heights Laverton North Sunshine Braybrook The win over the Sharks was a vital one in their finals charge as it places them just one win from jumping Sanctuary Lakes into the top four. A win looks to be very possible next week as Newport face North Sunshine. Elsewhere it was a much more uplifting week for the Braybrook Bombers. Currently having a disappointing season, they are winless from 12 games and sit two games clear on the bottom of the ladder. They took a step in the right direction in Round 14, going down by 61-points to North Sunshine. Usually a 10 goal loss would not be viewed as a positive, but when put into context for Braybrook, it s a significant improvement. The Bombers registered their second biggest score in 2016 and after numerous losses in excess of 100 points; this game could spark some real motivation for the team. Sunshine Heights scored an impressive win against Tarneit at the weekend. They take on Braybrook today. Picture: DARRELL JONES DIVISION THREE 31 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

39 WELCOME to the junior finals! It just seems like yesterday when the players and the umpires were searching for their kit that had been stored in the back of the cupboard for the summer months. Time flies and now some teams have missed out on the finals while others are focussing on competing at the business end of the season. The umpiring fraternity have been hard at work preparing themselves for the junior finals. While the usual training continues, the umpires are urged to treat each final as just another game. Umpires are instructed not to change anything, but to put into place all the things that they have been doing throughout the home and away season. Of course, most finals matches are very important for the teams and players involved. The same can be said about the umpires, field, boundary and goal. They are all hoping to put their best foot forward and not be noticed too much! A solid performance may mean getting another game next week and possibly having their name pencilled in for a junior grand final. But it s best not to get too far ahead of oneself. Just as players and teams and clubs are disappointed with certain results and outcomes, umpires also can feel let down when things don t go their way in selection. Hopefully the teams that perform the best make it all the way to compete in the junior grand finals that are only a few weeks away. So, too, will the umpires be out to impress. Many have performed well during the season and they go into the finals with a high number of brownie points. But, as the saying goes, you are only as good as your last game. Let s hope that the junior finals are full of action-packed exciting football where the top teams are able to exhibit the skills and abilities that have enabled them to compete in the finals. Likewise, may the top junior umpires be rewarded for UMPIRES CORNER UMPIRES TO PUT BEST FOOT FORWARD IN FINALS By GRAEME HODGART their endeavours both on and off the field. Good luck to everyone! May those who you support do well and represent the WRFL with pride and may they feel a sense of achievement regardless of the result. The umpires association is organising a reunion on Saturday, August 6 at 7 pm at Scovell Reserve. All past and present members are welcome. LAWS OF THE GAME QUIZ #11 Last week s question: Player A has been awarded a free kick but the ball is 20 metres away in the possession of Player B from the opposing team. Player B kicks a scrubby kick and the ball bounces twice before getting to Player A. What happens next? The correct answer was (OPTION C). The field umpire awards a 50 metre penalty against Player B. (See law 18.1) This week s question: Player A, who is a defender, takes a mark near the goal line. He goes back through the goals but plays on through the behind area. What happens next? (a) The field umpire blows the whistle and directs Player A to kick over the mark. (b) The field umpire calls play on and the goal umpire signals a behind. (c) The field umpire calls play on and play continues. Be sure to check out the correct answer in next week s WRFL Footy Record. 37 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

43 UNDER 19 S ROUND WRAP TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH ENDS IN DRAW By ASH BOLT THE top of the table clash between Werribee Districts and Deer Park lived up to expectations as both teams battled it out for a nail-biting draw at Soldiers Reserve. Deer Park took control of the game early with the first two goals and kept the ball in their forward half for large periods of time, but the Tigers were efficient going forward and only trailed by two-points at quarter-time. The Lions started the second quarter with a four goal burst, but Werribee Districts snagged two goals late to keep the margin to 14-points at half-time. Werribee Districts worked their way into the game and kept the ball in their half in the third term, but couldn t reduce the margin as Deer Park held a 14-point lead going into the final term. The Tigers came out after the three quarter time break with four unanswered goals and looked to be claiming yet another fourth quarter come from behind win, but a pair of late goals from Joshua Schembri and Jye King levelled the scores and gave us the season s first draw. Jack Tessari and Brandyn Di Sisto starred for Werribee Districts while Aaron Law kicked another three goals for the Tigers. Joshua Schembri had a great day for Deer Park, finishing with three goals while Rusiate Komaitai also kicked three. Hoppers Crossing had another big win, beating Yarraville Seddon by 55-points at Hogans Road Reserve. The Warriors dominated the game from start to finish and were very strong defensively, limiting Yarraville Seddon to just two goals and seven scoring shots for the game. Paul Tomelty and Brayden Kitchen both kicked two goals each for Hoppers Crossing while Thomas Piccolo and Nicholas Tsaloukis were the Eagles only goal scorers. Spotswood claimed their third win of the season with a 14-point upset over Altona. The Woodsmen took the early lead in the first quarter and were able to restrict Altona to just six goals before three quarter time, giving them enough of a lead to hold off a fast finishing Vikings side. 50 UNDER 19 S ROUND WRAP EIGHT STRAIGHT WINS FOR ALBION SINCE losing to Werribee Districts in Round 4, Albion has strung together an impressive run of wins. The Cats have won eight straight matches since that April loss and are currently sitting on top of the Under-19 Division 2 ladder. Their latest win came at the weekend, when they defeated the Tigers by 85-points at JR Parsons Reserve. Albion started the game well, but weren t able to convert all of their opportunities in-front of goal. They headed into the first break 10-points up, but had eight shots on goal to three, and should have been further in-front. It was an even second term, with Albion going into halftime holding on to a 13-point lead. The Cats turned up the pressure and intensity around the ball in the second-half. The home side kicked 12 goals to one in the second-half to win to eventually win the match by a comfortable 85-point margin. Albion had 10 different goal scorers, with James Leach the best of the lot, he booted four goals. Joel Bettin and Brandon Reid also kicked three apiece. For Werribee Districts, Chanse Peixoto was their most influential player, kicking two goals. With four games remaining Albion are on top of the ladder and Werribee Districts sit in third spot. The Albion versus Werribee Districts match was the only Under-19 Division 2 match played at the weekend as Wyndhamvale have forfeited their matches for the rest of the 2016 season. In the next round of matches, Newport Power, fresh from a week off, will take on Sanctuary Lakes at Langshaw Reserve. Werribee Districts and Albion will have the bye.
