3 KICKIN IT WITH KRISTEN Editorial Junior Final Series Issue 2, July 31st 2016 SUCCESSFUL START TO JUNIOR FINALS By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS WEEK One of the WRFL Junior Finals kicked off at the weekend and what a fantastic start to the four week series we had. Junior players from across the region took to the field and proudly represented their teams on Sunday. With the sun shining down on the west, junior teams put their best foot forward and did their best to advance to the following week. Congratulations to the teams that won a spot in the grand final and earned the right to have this weekend off and congrats to the teams who have kept their finals alive with wins and will be back in action in Week Two. Having seen a number of games across the season and on the weekend, I have seen firsthand, players, supporters and parents show great sportsmanship both on and off the field. While it is great to celebrate the win s when they come, it is also important to note that winning isn t everything. No matter the result, we should always remember the real reason why we are involved with footy. We love this great game. So if you are playing or supporting a team from the sidelines, you should always show respect and good sportsmanship, regardless of whether it is a senior or junior match. Over the course of the next three weeks of junior finals, I would like to remind players, parents, coaches and supporters to not lose sight of what is really important and to always show respect. CONTENTS Meredith Angwin...3 Junior Player Profile...5 Under-18 Girls Under-17 s Under-15 s Under-14 s This also extends to the umpires and the volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the season to ensure games are run as smooth as possible. Meanwhile, in this week s edition of the Record, we get to know the WRFL s acting president Meredith Angwin a little better. The Angwin name has long been synonymous with the WRFL/FDFL and now Meredith the daughter of Ron and Thelma Angwin has become the league s acting president. Meredith s job has taken her across Asia, where she has lived and worked for several years. No back in Australia, she has joined the board and has plans to improve the already successful WRFL competition. Turn to page three for more. Finally, I would like to encourage you to check out the WRFL Website, Facebook Page and WRFL Live Team App, for all the latest news. The WRFL Footy Show gets posted online each Wednesday, with senior and junior news constantly being updated online on our various social media channels throughout the week, so stay tuned. See you at the footy. Altona Juniors and Wyndhamvale go head-to-head at Grant Reserve in Altona for Week 1 of Finals. 5 THE Angwin name as long been synonymous with the Western Region Football League. Ron and Thelma Angwin were both involved in the then Footscray District Football League as president and treasurer and now their daughter Meredith, has followed in their footsteps and is now the acting president of the league. The Angwin family, who has lived in the west for generations, has always loved football and has always been passionate about the Western Bulldogs. I was born and bred in Footscray, I grew up here, so we do bleed red, white and blue, Meredith said. Ron, who has since passed away, was president of the FDFL for 11 years between 1981 and 1991, so Meredith grew up learning a lot about the goings on of the league. Fast forward to 2016 and Meredith has now holds the role of acting president. She took the reins as chair after Bruce Mildenhall and his wife decided to take an extended stay in Greece. Meredith first joined the board in 2014 after CEO Bob Tregear invited her to join the league. My father was involved in the FDFL and my mother as well, so when I was invited to come onto the board I jumped at the chance, Meredith said. I love football and I am passionate about giving back to the community. As well as giving back to her community, Meredith has also forged a successful career in IT Consulting, a profession that saw her live and work overseas. I have worked overseas from 2004, I worked extensively in Japan, lived and worked in Shanghai, China, spent time working in Singapore and all over Asiana and finally lived and worked in Bangkok, before I came back to Australia, she said. Through her senior management roles, Meredith has taken a keen and active role in all aspects of the board s business since she first joined the WRFL. Since joining the board, we have focussed on getting a clear strategic plan and direction for the league, Meredith said. WRFL NEWS MEREDITH S MISSION AS ACTING LEAGUE PRESIDENT By KRISTEN ALEAKIS We have been focusing on and ensuring we keep the strong history and traditions of the league going, but also recognising we have to take on change as we continue to move forward. There is still a lot of challenges. The world is facing a lot of change, no more so than in community sport, whether it be football or cricket or another sport, there is a lot of change happening and we are continuing to face those challenges. Meredith said she was proud to be associated with the WRFL and since holding the role as acting president, her involvement with the league has continued to grow. Moving forward, Meredith said her goals were to continue to run a successful football competition, while also making some improvements in and around the league. We have two areas we are working on, firstly is building on our Respectful Cultures of the West initiative, she said. We are particularly focussed on increasing female participation at all levels, whether that is having more women on the board, in an administration roles, as trainers, umpires and obviously having a standalone competition for girls and young women in the future. The other thing I would like to focus on is actually getting more collaboration and understanding of what is happening outside of our league. Meredith said she would also continue to get the best out of the board. We have some really talented people involved, so I want to try and get the best out of everyone on the board. 48 UMPIRES CORNER WRFL UMPIRES TO OFFICIATE LEGENDS MATCH By GRAEME HODGART AS the senior grades gear themselves for the finals which are now within arm s reach, the junior finals continue. Congratulations to all those umpires (field, boundary and goal) who have been able to officiate in their first finals games last week or this week. It is certainly an achievement for many and a reward for the effort and commitment given throughout the season. Unfortunately, for some umpires, likewise for certain players and teams, their season is already over for All that is left is to ponder missed opportunities and what might have been. For most, there is always the challenge to do it again come the new season beginning in April Those still in the finals will be hoping that they are successful in their next game and are able to progress through to the next level. Umpires are hopeful that they have ticked enough boxes during the season and also performed well enough in their last games to warrant further selection. But not all rewards are just on the local scene. One group of WRFL umpires are going to experience something new when they get to umpire on the hallowed turf of the MCG. Prior to the AFL clash at that venue on Saturday 20 August between Richmond and St. Kilda there is a Legends Game. The WRFL has been asked to provide the umpires for the match which will be played over two 15 minute halves. Those selected for the game are Andrew Fregonese, Geoff Tressider, Phil Stone (field umpires), Robert Hill and Riley Kane (boundary umpires), Tim Moloney and Paul Battaglia (goal umpires). With the exception of the teenagers running the boundary lines, all the others are in the twilight of their careers. This game is a fitting reward for their many years of dedicated service to the WRFL umpiring fraternity. Hopefully the experience can be one of the highlights of their already notable individual careers. May they all perform well and enjoy themselves! The umpires association is organising a reunion on Saturday, August 6 at 7 pm at Scovell Reserve. All past and present members are welcome. 46
