3 By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS THIS week the Western Region Football League released a White Ribbon video featuring players from across the league. The aim of the video and the WRFL s White Ribbon Round is to create awareness to end men s violence against women. The video is a part of the WRFL s online activities released in the lead-up to this week s dedicated White Ribbon Round. As a league we are extremely proud of the video and the impact it has already had on our community, with thousands of people from across the state having already watched the video and shared it with their friends. As part of the WRFL s White Ribbon activities, senior players will today also wear white armbands to honour the 52 women that are killed in Australia each year by a current or former partner. This is just a small way our football community can raise awareness of this serious issue facing many Australian s each and every week. I hope the armbands and the White Ribbon video can be conversation starters and that those of you who are watching a WRFL game over the weekend begin to realise the enormity of this issue and realise that with your help, we can all make a difference. Finally, I would like to thank all the clubs and players who are involved in the video, Red Onion who filmed and edited the piece and also thank you to everyone who has watched it. It is much appreciated. Matt Dean, Josh Bench, Braden Ferrari, Jase Perkins, Harley Weston-Armstrong, Tim Quick and Daniel Castellano all took part in the match. Senior Interleague assistant coach Brett Jacobs was also a part of Vic Metro s coaching panel. Despite not getting the win, they all should be proud of their achievements. See you at the footy. 5 WRFL NEWS WRFL MEMBERS TAKE WHITE RIBBON OATH PLAYERS and officials from across the Western Region Football League have taken the White Ribbon oath, pledging to never commit, excuse, or remain silent about violence against women. The league has decided to host a dedicated White Ribbon Round to help raise awareness of men s violence against women. This weekend, senior players will wear white armbands as a mark of respect. Some clubs will also be selling white ribbons and wristbands in a bid to raise money for the work White Ribbon does in the community. Earlier this week the WRFL also released a video on its website and social media channels of players from across Division 1, 2 and 3 talking about White Ribbon. To view the video, please visit the WRFL website. Following on from last week s record about White Ribbon, this week look at how those in the community can offer support and take action against domestic violence. WHAT YOU CAN DO If you witness violence, don t be aggressive or violent. Always keep yourself and others safe. Call 000 in an emergency. If you witness a violent act such as a man assaulting a woman in the street - you can: Call the police. Be a witness. Stand far enough away to be safe but close enough for the violent person to see you and be aware that they are being watched. Get others support. Ask others who are nearby to help. Verbally intervene. Tell the violent person clearly that their actions are not okay, they are a crime, and you are calling the police. Ask the victim if she needs help. Ask: Are you okay, do you need a taxi? Make the man feel noticed and, and offer practical assistance to the woman. Say something to the man: Hey, what are you doing? That s not on, mate, and so on. Stick around to make sure the situation has cooled down. Create a distraction so that the abused person has time to get away or the perpetrator slows down or ceases their violence. For example, ask a man harassing a woman on the street for directions or the time. Being an active bystander doesn t always mean confronting a perpetrator face to face. Always keep yourself and others safe. Call 000 in an emergency. If you re aware of violence during or after the incident - you can: Talk to a friend who is verbally or physically abusive to his partner in a private, calm moment, rather than in public or directly after an abusive incident. Tell him that what you witnessed was not okay, and he needs to get some help. Talk to a group of the perpetrator s friends and, together, decide on a course of action. If you have witnessed a friend or colleague abusing a partner, talk to a group of the victim s friends and develop a group response. Talk to the woman at some point and let her know you saw what was going on and you re willing to help her. If you re a high school or college student, approach a trusted teacher, social worker, or health professional. Tell them what you ve observed and ask them to do something, or ask them to advise you on how you might proceed. 7 SEVEN WRFL STARS DON THE BIG V By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS WRFL NEWS THE might of Vic Country proved too strong for Vic Metro on Sunday, with the team from the bush claiming the 2016 AFL Victoria Community Cup. The Western Region Football League had seven players involved in the Vic Metro team. Werribee Districts star Matt Dean, Sunshine sharpshooter Daniel Castellano, Albion young gun Josh Bench, Deer Park duo Tim Quick and Jase Perkins and Hoppers Crossing players Braden Ferrari and Harley Weston-Armstrong were all involved in the game. All seven players were a part of the WRFL s Interleague win against Ballarat earlier this year. WRFL senior interleague assistant coach Brett Jacobs was also involved with the Vic Metro program, as an assistant coach. Coached by Western Bulldogs Hall of Famer Brian Royal, the Vic Metro side suffered a 39-point loss. Playing at Waterview Reserve in Mernda, Vic Country came out firing from the first bounce. Using the wind as an advantage in the opening term, Vic Country skipped out to a five goal lead, which ultimately couldn t be pegged back. Vic Metro clicked into gear in the second term, with forward Jase Perkins kicking his first goal of the afternoon. Not long after Perkins scored, Warriors star Braden Ferrari slotted a goal and the margin was cut in half. In the dying stages of the quarter, Vic Country pair Tom Toma and Campbell Floyd combined to extend the lead back out to 29-points at half-time. Vic Metro mounted a small come back in the final term, kicking three goals in the opening minutes of the final term. Perkins kicked his second, while Sunshine s Daniel Castellano booted one and Greensborough s Dan McLinden kicked a goal. However, momentum soon swung in favour of Vic Country, who pulled away from the Metro side. They started with the wind and took full advantage of that, assistant coach Brett Jacobs said. They outplayed us, we did look threatening in the last quarter, we got within two or three goals, but they got some late ones. They were the better side on the day. Jacobs said all of the WRFL players involved in the game should be proud of their achievements. All the players from the west should hold their heads up high, they battled hard, he said. The good thing about the players from the WRFL is that they are all young, they will all be players who represent the league for many years to come. The only incident from the match was a neck injury to Albion captain Josh Bench. He was sent to hospital to receive treatment and looks set to have an extended stint on the sidelines. Jacobs, who was also involved in last year s Vic Metro campaign, said despite not getting the win on the board, he had a great experience. I was fortunate enough to do it last year and had a great time, it was the same this year, he said. Jacobs encouraged the players who played in the game and those who missed out to continue to work hard and to aspire to make the Vic Metro team again next year. 12 DIVISION 1 ROUND WRAP ST ALBANS MAKE A LATE FINALS PLAY By KEVIN HILLIER ST. ALBANS could be in the five by the end of the weekend if they win on Saturday, and as I think, Spotswood lose to Altona. Who would have thought that? Before any of the Saints faithful start cancelling September holidays, there is a long way to go, and Spotswood has an extra game between now and the end of the home and away season. The Saints have to firstly beat Sunshine. The Kangaroos might be done, but they are not dusted, and will want to finish the season by shaping the five if they can and they can, given they meet the Saints, Hoppers, Spotswood and Altona in the next four weeks. Only because it is at Kings Park I am tipping the Saints. Hoppers Crossing will have too much firepower all over the ground for Wyndhamvale, who are limping to the end of the season after another big loss last week. Hoppers will not take any game lightly in the lead up to the finals and should win handsomely. The Falcons have done some very good things in their Division 1 debut season, and won t want to spoil their good work with more thrashings. Werribee Districts clash with Deer Park should be a beauty if both are at their best. Joe Halloran has been in great form, and will need to be at this best to curb one or more of the rampaging Lions forwards. Take your pick Brendan Fevola, Jase Perkins, Kwame McHarg, even Chris Stewart or Scott Greenhough when resting up forward. DIVISION 1 SENIORS TEAM P W L D PTS % Deer Park Hoppers Crossing Werribee Districts Altona Spotswood St Albans Albion The Lions are loaded with goal kickers, and a midfield that supplies efficiently and accurately. Unlike my radio buddy Steve Thom, I don t see Deer Park losing before the finals. Great to see Andrew Panayi kick a bag last week for Districts, but he will need a few of his team mates to chime in as well if they are any chance. Deer Park to flex their muscles. Spotswood has the staggers, and as mentioned earlier will probably fall out of the five by the end of this round unless they win. The Woodsmen s injury list is crippling, and there is not much light at the end of the tunnel. Altona is also coming off a loss but still has a chance at a top three finish, as unlikely as that may be. Neither side is in danger of threatening for the flag, but both want to play finals. Spotswood is renowned for its spirit and never say die attitude, but the fact is, they are shot. The Vikings will enjoy the spoils of victory here. Sunshine Wyndhamvale St Albans had a strong win against Wyndhamvale at the weekend. Picture: DARRELL JONES 10 DIVISION ONE

13 DIVISION 1 ROUND WRAP HOPPERS CROSSING STILL THE TEAM TO BEAT By CONNOR PAIN IN A tight and low-scoring contest, Hoppers Crossing used seven goals in the second half to overcome a half-time deficit and down Altona (67) to 4.9.(33). Neither side jumped out of the blocks, as the two top-four teams battled in what could be a grand final preview. The Vikings led at the first and second quarter breaks, but its inefficient kicking (three goals and eight behinds in the first half ) kept the Warriors in the game. The 34-point win highlights Hoppers Crossing s premiership credentials and its ability to grind out close games. In the upcoming round, we will see Hoppers face Wyndhamvale, with Altona travelling to Spotswood to face the Woodsmen. A season-high 12 goals to Ryan Harrington headlined the Werribee District s 138-point demolition of Albion at the weekend. It has been the same story of many matches this season, with the game effectively over after the first quarter as the Districts booted eight goals and held its opponent to just a solitary behind. The game got worse for the Cats as Werribee ran ragged over them, reaffirming them as potential grand finalists. The most damning stat of the day is that the Districts were able to kick more goals than the Cats scored points, in the (160) to 3.4. (22) smashing. Werribee will next battle Deer Park while the Cats will look lick their wounds for another week as they have the Round 14 bye. DIVISION 1 RESERVES TEAM P W L D PTS % The Lions are just percentage points outside of the top four after its hard-fought 23-point win over Spotswood. Despite the scores finishing relatively low, the game appeared headed for a blowout after Deer Park were able to jump out to a 29-point lead going into half-time. The Woodsmen hit back in the third with three goals of its own, however it was unable to bridge the gap any further as the Lions kept pace with its opponents scoring and eventually winning (66) to 6.7. (43). Meanwhile, St. Albans cruised to an 83-point win over Wyndhamvale. The matchup started strongly, with the Saints leading by just a goal at quarter time. Eight goals to one behind in favour of St. Albans in the second term all but ended the contest and the Falcons hopes. The (130) to 7.5. (47) victory sees the Saints jump Albion on the ladder and into sixth place. Sunshine, who had the bye last round, will travel to its close rivals and battle St. Albans on Saturday. 22 DIVISION 2 ROUND WRAP CAROLINE SPRINGS CRUISE TO VICTORY By DANIEL MOSCA IN A dominant performance from start to finish, the Caroline Springs Lakers improved to 10-1 on the ladder with an enormous 129-point win over the West Footscray Roosters on Saturday. It was a one sided affair from start to finish with the Lakers starting off strong and outscoring the home side in every quarter and outplaying them all over the ground. Caroline Springs received strong contributions from Stefan Caterino and Daniel Backus who won the contested ball early and found targets repeatedly out of the centre. The Lakers finished with 10 different goal scorers, including four apiece from Aaron King, Jason Degabriele and Matt Chapman. West Footscray, meanwhile, will have to go back to drawing board after again failing to win the contested footy throughout the day and suffering their 11th loss of the season. Despite their strong play throughout the contest, the Lakers failed to make the Roosters pay early on the scoreboard, struggling to hit targets inside 50 and blowing multiple chances in front of goal. They booted 3.5 in the opening term to West Footscray s 2.1 and took a 10-point lead into the first break. Regardless, the visitors imposed their will on West Footscray immediately in the second quarter by once again dominating out of the middle, only this time they capitalised on their inside 50 s and banged on 8 goals to 1 in the quarter to effectively put the game out of reach by half-time. They led by 53-points at the main break. DIVISION 2 SENIORS TEAM P W L D PTS % The second half played out much like the first with Caroline Springs suffocating the Roosters from the getgo and controlling the tempo. However, just like the first quarter, their dominant play was not reflected on the scoreboard. They kicked just 3.8 in the quarter, yet were never in any real trouble from the home side who managed just two behinds in the term. The Lakers put the home side away for good with a string of goals to start the fourth and never looked back, finishing the game with a walloping 42 scoring shots, including 22 majors, while West Footscray failed to score a single point in the fourth en route to their third straight loss and their 11th loss overall. They sit in last place on the ladder while Caroline Springs stand strong at third place. In other games, Yarraville Seddon moved to 10-1 on the season with another strong performance all-round over Albanvale to the tune of 118-points. Elsewhere, Glenorden were led by 10 different goal kickers to hammer Manor Lakes by 169-points. 23 DIVISION 2 ROUND WRAP ELEVEN STRAIGHT WINS FOR YARRAVILLE SEDDON By DAYLE DUNSHEA YARRAVILLE SEDDON S chances at finishing the home and away season undefeated are looking better as each week passes, as they once again defeated Albanvale. The ladder-leaders took on Albanvale at Yarraville Oval at the weekend, winning the Round 13 match (146) to 1.5. (11). Despite having 10 separate goal kickers, Eagles star Scott Krakouer was the main target up forward for the home side, he slotted seven goals. Krakouer and Paul Azar were named as the best players on the ground. Manor Lakes hosted its pink round in the local derby against Glen Orden. Despite the Storm playing some of their best football this season, they weren t able to match it with the Hawks, losing 7.3 (45) to (110). Glen Orden s Shayne Comensoli s four goals was good enough to make him the best player on the ground. Meanwhile, West Footscray have faced another huge home ground loss, after Caroline Springs defeated them by 202-points at the weekend. The Lakers didn t put a foot wrong, dominating throughout the match. Caroline Springs forward Michael Saker has moved up to third place in the leading goal kickers, after kicking a massive 10 goals for his team. Saker wasn t the only player who was able to score big, with his teammate Nathan Knuckey scoring six goals. DIVISION 2 RESERVES TEAM P W L D PTS % Yarraville Seddon Caroline Springs North Footscray Glenorden Albanvale Manor Lakes West Footscray During the first half, West Footscray went scoreless, while Caroline Springs scored goal after goal, heading into the half-time break with a 118-point lead. Their dominance continued in the second-half, as they piled on another 12 goals. As North Footscray had a bye last week, this win puts Caroline Springs back in second spot on the ladder. The big win has also boosted their percentage, they are on 681 per cent. In Round 14 action, Glen Orden will have their bye, whilst Manor Lakes will be making the drive to Town Centre Oval to take on Caroline Springs. At Robert Bruce Oval, Albanvale will be playing West Footscray, the Roosters have significantly improved since the last time these two sides met, however the Cobras are still strong favourites to score its fifth win of the season. Yarraville Seddon will be making their way over the Hansen Reserve to take on North Footscray, the Devils have a very real chance to defeat the undefeated Eagles, but will have to bring their A-game. 32 DIVISION 3 ROUND WRAP SENIORS PARKSIDE S WINNING STREAK CONTINUES By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS PARKSIDE extended its winning streak to nine games, after defeating Laverton by 20-points at the weekend. After losing two of its first three matches the Magpies have won their past nine matches and are currently sitting on top of the Division 3 Senior ladder. Coach, Nick Condos would be happy his side scored another win at the weekend, but ultimately would be disappointed with their accuracy in front of goal. Parkside had 27 scoring shots to Laverton s 12, yet only won by 20-points. Parkside led by 38-points at half-time and looked likely to carry on its scoreboard pressure for the rest of the match, however they switched off, with Laverton able to peg back the lead. Laverton outscored Parkside in the second-half, keeping their opposition to just one goal, while they kicked five of their own. But, Parkside did enough to win. Matthew Shepperbottom continued his good form infront of goal, kicking another two goals. Igor Bera, Thomas Deutschbein and Drew Vincent also put in dominant displays. Parkside will now enjoy the bye, while Laverton will host the Wyndham Suns at Laverton Park. The Suns had a strong win against Sunshine Heights, spoiling the party for Dragons playing-coach Robert Wyndham Suns were too strong for Sunshine Heights at the weekend. Wyndham led from the first bounce to the final whistle, winning the match by 43-points in-front of a home crowd at Goddard Street Reserve. The Suns kicked five goals to two in the opening quarter, before Sunshine Heights fought back to make it a five-point ball game at half-time. The game looked headed for a tight finish, when the Suns led by just 13-points at the last change, however it was one traffic in the last term. The Suns kicked six goals to two in the final quarter, to score its sixth win of the 2016 season. Dean Cachia and Daniel Bean were the key targets up forward, the pair kicked eight goals between them, while Simon Nahyna was named best on ground. Sanctuary Lakes flexed its muscles against Braybrook, winning by 118-points at Pennell Reserve. Only three points separated the two sides at the first break, but momentum soon swung in favour of the Sharks, who kicked 22 goals to five after quarter-time. Steven Neralic, Dylan Creed and Jai Granvillani combined for 14 goals. Josh Spry was named the best player on the ground for Sanctuary Lakes. The Sharks will next play host to Newport Power. In the final match of the round, Tarneit defeated North Sunshine by 98-points at Wootten Road Reserve. Richard Psaila starred for the Titans, he booted five goals DIVISION THREE

33 AS WE draw closer and closer to finals action, the top teams are beginning to make a statement about their premiership chances, and Tarneit made the biggest impact this round. They solidified their credentials with a thumping victory over North Sunshine. The 176-point annihilation was a direct message to current leaders Parkside that they need to watch their backs in the coming weeks. Winning by such a large margin leaves Tarneit in a favourable position to jump above Parkside, as they have a superior percentage. Next week they play Sunshine Heights and with the Magpies scheduled for a bye, we re odds on to have a new ladder-leader by the end of the round. The victory itself was highlighted by a few terrific performances up forward. Samuel Ingham kicked a bag of seven to take the lead in the goal kicking table and he was supported by Troy Whiting (six) and Reece Frost (four) as Tarneit displayed a multi-pronged attack that will be difficult to contend with come finals. On the other side of the draw, North Sunshine have an excellent chance to recover from their massive loss as they play cellar dwellers Braybrook. The Roadrunners are not likely to be able to make finals at this point, but will be hoping to avoid the embarrassment of the wooden spoon in Parkside held on to top spot in the league with a relatively comfortable 51-point win over Laverton. Laverton currently sit seventh on the ladder, but face a chase between them and the finals contenders, as they are three games behind the sixth-placed Sunshine Heights. They will take on the Wyndham Suns in Round 13 and must win in order to keep in touch. Elsewhere it was the Suns themselves that registered their 10th win for 2016, besting Sunshine Heights by seven goals. The win leaves them in third place and right in contention for an important double chance during the finals period. For the Suns, Christopher Neville booted five goals and the team was never truly challenged by their opponents who face the might of Tarneit next week. 39 NOBODY really has to be reminded that we are battling through a wet winter. Some football seasons are better than others in terms of how much rain we get. Most of our local grounds are well grassed which means that they can take a fair amount of water from above. Unfortunately those that have a turf wicket tend to become a sticky bog in the middle. At those grounds, footballers and umpires try to skirt around them although sometimes this is not possible. Even training on heavy and waterlogged grounds becomes difficult. Recently the umpires main training venue at Scovell Reserve was inundated with constant rain so training was cancelled. Instead, the umpires meet for a coaching session conducted by Mark Westgarth and covered all three disciplines in field, boundary and goal umpiring. After a few house-keeping matters that largely related to the fast approaching junior and senior finals, the group was asked to reflect on what things umpires should be doing before, during and after a WRFL match. To make it more specific, each discipline was asked, to discuss briefly what they need to be doing. Then all the suggestions were presented to the assembly of umpires. It was a good exercise because it made every umpire present, from the newest novice to the oldest veteran, stop and think about what they should be doing on match day. Many of the things listed were quite basic and most umpires do them automatically without too much thought. Through the whole exercise it was obvious that the main idea seemed to come to the fore. It was telling all umpires that they needed to be fully prepared for each and every game. Mark summed up the session by explaining that umpires needed to be part of a team and to communicate clearly with each other. Hopefully when you are watching the various WRFL games you will see that all the umpires in action are UMPIRES CORNER COMMUNICATION VITAL FOR UMPIRES By GRAEME HODGART well prepared for their games. If you watch them closely you should be able to notice how and when they combine with each other as a team in order to get their individual roles completed. There will be moments when you will see them communicating with each other and also with players and club officials. If so, then Mark Westgarth, Director of Umpiring, will be more than happy. LAWS OF THE GAME QUIZ #11 Last week s question: The ball goes over the boundary line and the boundary umpire blows the whistle and signals that the ball is out of bounds. 43 UNDER 19 S ROUND WRAP WERRIBEE OVERCOME LATE YARRAVILLE SURGE By ASH BOLT WERRIBEE Districts overcame a third quarter blast from Yarraville Seddon to claim a 17-point win at Yarraville Oval. A long goal from Lachy Huell gave Yarraville Seddon the lead in the opening minute, but their poor kicking let them down and allowed Werribee Districts to lead by four points at quarter-time. The Tigers defence stopped everything that came their way and kept the Eagles scoreless in the second quarter, but one goal and seven behinds at the other end meant Werribee Districts stretched the margin to just 17-points at half-time. The poor kicking kept Yarraville Seddon in the game and they made the most of their opportunities with a five goal burst in the third term, but two late goals from the Tigers gave them a two point lead going into the last break. With the game on the line, a goal from Mijiele Jese Koroibete gave the Eagles the early lead in the fourth term, but from then on it was all Werribee Districts as they kicked three goals and claimed the 17-point win. The win sees the Tigers maintain their spot on top of the ladder for another week. Joshua Snow and Adam Harkins played well in defence for Werribee Districts, while Aaron Law added another three goals to his season s tally. Connor Smillie and Ben Wagland were the Eagles standouts as Mijiele Jese Koroibete, Blake Green and Lachy Huell all kicked two goals each. Altona broke their six game losing streak with a 23-point upset win over Hoppers Crossing at Grant Reserve. Hoppers Crossing looked like carrying on their momentum from last week s huge win and sped off to a 12-point lead at quarter time, but Altona turned the tide in the second term and lead by a single point at half-time. After the long break, the Vikings were able to restrict Hoppers Crossing to just three goals and their second lowest score of the season as they picked up the 23-point win. Matthew Wright and Will Taylor were Altona s best while Jack Reynolds also stood out with three goals. 50 UNDER 19 S ROUND WRAP THRILLING MATCH ENDS IN AN ALBION VICTORY By NICK GALEA ALBION have narrowed the gap between them and Newport on the Under-19 Division 2 ladder as they recorded a 17-point win and their second over Newport this season. The Cats clawed their way to victory at JR Parsons Reserve, winning (58) to 6.5. (41). Newport kicked the first goal of the game through deadeye Youssef El Hawli. Albion s Cooper Muir was fantastic in the ruck as he gave his midfield silver service to dominate the clearances, but they weren t able to capitalise on numerous entries inside-50 as they only managed two goals from James Leach and Corey Cohen. Newport were far stronger in the second quarter as they kicked four consecutive goals to lead by 14-points at half-time. Ahmed Mesto who was playing his first game against his old club was able to nail a major with a snap 35 metres out and had the ball on a string. Albion responded with greater intensity in third quarter and controlled the first half of the term as they slotted three majors in a row to steal the lead back by one point, with James Leach kicking one and setting up another. Newport regained some composure in the remaining 10 minutes of the quarter, but weren t able to make the most of their opportunities as they kicked three behinds. With nine of the 10 goals kicked to the Stanford St end, Mitchell Taleb continued the trend as he put Newport in front by five points at the six minute mark of the fourth quarter. Albion s Bradley Kendall-Coyle then had a purple patch as he took a couple of ripping contested marks and UNDER 19 DIVISION 2 TEAM P W L D PTS % Newport Power Albion Werribee Districts slotted two crucial goals from just inside-50 in a couple of minutes to regain the momentum for Albion. Tyler Parkinson then nailed the sealer from an acute angle 45-metres out after he laid a strong tackle on former teammate Ahmed Mesto to see Albion round out 17-point winners. Newport s Sebastian Micucci, Thomas Beard and Ahmed Mesto all tried hard and Mitchell Taleb kicked two goals. Albion s Cooper Muir and Connor McPherson were standouts and James Leach slotted two goals. Unfortunately there was no second game this round as Wyndhamvale had to forfeit their match against Sanctuary Lakes at Featherbrook Reserve.
