5 WRFL JUNIOR INTERLEAGUE By Sophie Hammill Last Wednesday night saw the opening round of the AFL Victorian Metropolitan Championships and Junior Interleague Carnival. The carnivals see eight WRFL teams ranging from Under 13s to Under 16s, including Youth Girls, compete against five leagues throughout Victoria including the Northern FL, South East Juniors, Essendon District FL, Riddle FL and Yarra Junior FL. With each team performing in up to three games, the carnival runs from May 27 to June 17, with the majority of matches played over the Queen s Birthday long weekend. In preparation for the event, tryouts were conducted in November last year where coaches began the process of carefully selecting each team to partake in the carnival. In addition to these tryouts, many kids were also scouted by their coaches and clubs based on their performance throughout the season. As well as training intensively for their various interleague teams, players have also been busy training on week nights with their respective clubs and playing on game day over the weekends. The junior interleague carnival is as a great opportunity for our young players to form new friendships, improve their skills and represent their league against some of the best players across the state. The opportunity to pull on the red, white and blue jumper is also considered to be a great pathway program for these young players, as it allows them to gain added exposure playing on behalf of their league. Division One Under 14s coach, Jason Rainbow, said that the junior interleague program is a great chance for these young players to showcase their talent. Throughout the past three years, Rainbow has coached in the junior league carnival and has seen many players go on to play in the VFL. The WRFL also has 10 players who performed in the TAC Cup this year, who previously played for the league in the junior league carnival. In recognition of this carnival and the dedication from its players, the WRFL held a jumper presentation night to congratulate those players whom have been selected for the final squads. I would just like to acknowledge all players that have been selected to represent the WRFL in this exciting carnival and wish them the best of luck over the next few weeks. 6 YOUNG TIGERS LEAVING THEIR MARK After six rounds of the 2015 VFL season Werribee finds itself on top of the ladder, having dropped just the opening round of the season against Geelong, a game that was moved from Avalon Airport Oval to Simonds Stadium. The Tigers have taken some big scalps and broken a number of losing sequences in the process. The 10 year winless streak against Port Melbourne at North Port Oval is gone as is the eight year one against Box Hill on their ground. The Tigers also beat arch rival Williamstown for the first time in seven years. Losing several established players at the end of last season has given opportunities to many new faces at the club and an exciting group is starting to emerge. They are young, hungry for success and playing a very attractive and intense brand of football. 19-year-olds like Elijah Wales (Murray U18), Jason Robinson (Western Jets/Altona), Matt Munro (Murray U18), Joe Maishman (Geelong Falcons) and 20-year-olds like Harrison King (Jets/Werribee Districts) and Matt Hanson (Tasmania) have made Avalon Airport Oval their football home and are thriving under senior coach John Lamont and his coaching team. Joe Maishman was the only VFL listed player to be selected for the Under 18 championships when he was named in the Vic Country squad. The class of 2015 is cementing their place in the Tigers best 23 according to Football Operations Manager Stu Balloch. It is great to have such a positive start to the 2015 season. TRIBUNAL REPORT Week 7 The youthful mix of first game players we have blooded in the first half of the year will stand this club in great stead moving forward. Being able to win and get new players playing week to week ensures that we grow the depth of our club. It also shows that we have provided opportunities for guys looking to play at the highest level they can. It has certainly been a part of our recruitment strategy, to ensure we can provide spots on the list for younger players to get experience. 7 JACOBS APPOINTED ASSISTANT COACH IN VIC METRO SQUAD WRFL Senior interleague coach Brett Jacobs won t be hanging up the whistle just yet, after being selected as an assistant coach in the Vic Metro Representative Squad next month. In a major coup for the league, Jacobs will assist Western Bulldogs legend Brian Royal, who led last year s Vic Metro squad to victory over the WorkSafe AFL Vic Country side by 38-points. I m obviously very humbled and very honoured to be involved and just having the opportunity come up, it was just too good to pass up, Jacobs said. Along with fellow assistant coaches Sean Millane and Northern Football League representative coach, Jason Heatley, Jacobs will head to Queensland over the Queen s Birthday long weekend where Vic Metro will play a representative squad from AFL Queensland on June 7. Despite the WRFL going down to the Eastern Football League by 34-points in this year s AFL Vic Metro Championships, nine WRFL players have been selected in the initial 42-man squad. Deer Park has the most representatives with Kwame McHarg, Jackson Purton-Smith, Tim Quick and Rhett King asked to train with the squad that started training this week. Five other Division One clubs also have representatives selected, with tall man Jayden Post (Altona), Murray Boyd (Spotswood), Wayde Skipper (Hoppers Crossing), Andrew Panayi (Werribee Districts) and captain Tim Jenkins (St. Albans) selected. From memory I think seven out of the nine have got back to AFL Victoria expressing their interest, which is fantastic, Jacobs said. In terms of picking the final squad, we haven t gone down that road yet. We ll probably announce the final squad a week before the game, but for now we re just taking it one training session at a time. Once the squad is picked and we start getting into the more technical stuff of how we want the squad to play and defend those sort of expectations will start coming into it. Traditionally battling it out with the best players from the AFL Vic Country team, Jacobs said it will be interesting to test the Metro squad s skills against the top talent in Queensland. It s difficult not knowing too much about them obviously them playing interstate, but that s the challenge we ll need to be switched on come game day. Getting a group together like this can be a major challenge in itself. You are bringing together players from all six Melbourne metropolitan leagues, something which Jacobs says will require a lot of focus on team bonding. I think the challenge is going to be getting players together that aren t familiar with each other, so team bonding and getting the team playing together as a group is probably the greatest challenge. If we can overcome that hurdle and get the boys familiar with one another, then we feel we will have a very talented squad and do quite well. Steve Teakel of AFL Victoria s Coaching and Umpiring Development Manager said that the squad will be required to attend up to four training sessions before the big match. The squad will be training at Box Hill City Oval on the next two Wednesday nights, then at Ikon Park for the last week. The final squad will be cut to a 24-man team on June 2 with the squad flying out on the morning of June 6, before the main match on Sunday June 7.Good luck to all players involved. 11 The talk of the Division One competition is always about Deer Park. How much are they paying their players? Can anyone beat them this year? Will the points system bring their dynasty to an end? Where does Mark McGoldrick buy his jeans? It s a joke Goldie! While everyone is consumed by these questions, the Lions once again answered their critics and got the points against St. Albans. Coach Marc Bullen will be enjoying some close fought games at this time of the season, to steel his side for a full on end to the home and away rounds. The Lions host Colts this week and should be able to get the four points pretty easily on their home turf. St. Albans will be smarting from a game that they could have won, and will be too good for Albion. The Cats are trying hard and giving it their best shot but just can t match it, especially with the likes of the Saints. Marcus Barclay will be both frustrated and excited by their performance last weekend. Werribee Districts and Hoppers Crossing have a great rivalry at junior level and given their respective lists, this now crosses over to the current seniors. The Tigers have to win this game on their home ground; it is as simple as that. A loss will mean pain at the business end of the season for Wade Chapman and his team. Hoppers looked good last week with Skipper and Mead absolute standouts. I watched Sunshine last week in that game against Hoppers and was extremely disappointed with their endeavour and willingness to attack the contest. They let the Warriors do whatever they pleased and that will not get them into the action come finals time. Sunshine has played the team coming off the bye every week except round 2, when they had the bye. I am not sure what effect this has, but as the season goes on it will mean more. Might be something worth addressing at head office for the fixture next year. After the break, Port Colts are holding a special day to raise funds for brain cancer research. 12 ROUND WRAP DIVISION ONE RESERVES Six games. Six wins. Werribee Districts has maintained its perfect start to the season after demolishing Port Melbourne by 133-points, Tiger Matthew Palmington s five goals leading the way. The match was decided by half time, as Districts led by 54-points. The second half was more of the same as the visitors kicked another 13 goals, with the Colts only managing to register five behinds. The 24.10(154) to 2.9(21) victory leaves the Districts in good form as they host second placed Hoppers Crossing, in what is shaping up as the game of the season so far. Port Melbourne Colts will look to rebound when they travel to face Deer Park in round 8. At JR Parsons Reserve, Altona has won its fourth consecutive game in a nail-biting contest against Albion. Inefficient kicking from the Vikings kept the Cats in the game, however Altona showed their mettle and held on to win 10.11(71) to 11.3(69). A four goal haul from Viking Matt Davis moves him up the goal kicking table into equal seventh place, while the efforts of Brett Miller and Bill El Souki were vital in helping get Altona across the line. Albion will rue their missed opportunity to chalk up its second win of the season, as they become the first team to reach six losses for the year. The bye now awaits Altona, who will have to wait a fortnight in order to extend their winning streak after the Queen s Birthday while Albion will match up against a confident St. Albans side who chalked up its third win of the season. Staunch defence and an offensive explosion in the third quarter helped St. Albans smash Deer Park by 63-points. The first half was tight, as the Saints led by just nine-points at the main break, however the third term blew the match right open, as the Saints kicked six goals and held their opponent to just one. The Lions only managed to register three behinds in the final term, with St. Albans pushing the final score out to 14.14(98) to 5.5(35). Hoppers Crossing will look to join Werribee Districts on six wins today when the pair face off in a top of the table clash, while Sunshine will be aiming to jump into the top four with a win when they battle Spotswood. 23 TIV BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING The Falcons have been one of the most consistent sides in Division Two in recent times without breaking a premiership drought dating back to joining the league in The side has not missed the top four since 2010 but without the ultimate to show for it, the relative success means little. That is why the round seven win over West Footscray is so important. Triumph over their closest rival has for the first time in 2015, anointed Division Two s premiership favourite. Whether the tag sits comfortably with the Falcons is another matter, but this may be the year Wyndhamvale finally take the next step. It was the Falcons terrific midfield that enabled them to claw back a 23-point deficit at quarter time and kick on to a 26-point victory. Veteran utility Daniel Bunworth fresh off celebrating his 300th game earlier in May, was again terrific while Chris Graham was silky and prolific. West Footscray s all conquering forward line found the going tough against the excellent Falcons defence, the competition s leading goal kicker Munir El Houlhi was held goalless and fellow danger forward Damien Yze was missing from the side. In the battle of fiery attack and ice cold defence, it was the defensive strength of the Falcons that has cemented them as the team to beat. As Wyndhamvale moved a game clear, other sides also cemented their spots on the ladder. North Footscray ran out comfortable 39-point victory over Manor Lakes to shore up third position. Some inconsistent kicking from Yarraville Seddon didn t cost them, as four goals from Gordon Hillsdon secured a 73-point smashing of Sunshine Heights. Finally Caroline Springs did no harm to their finals chances and put the final nail in the coffin of Glen Orden s with their best performance of the year culminating in a 38-point win. If round seven was highlighted the battle for first, round eight is headlined by the battle for third as the Devils host Yarraville Seddon. It should be a competitive battle between the two most recently relegated sides with the Eagles having found form of late. At the other end of the table, Sunshine Heights may finally sniff a chance to get on the board against fellow cellar dweller Glen Orden. 24 ROUND WRAP DIVISION TWO RESERVES The atmosphere down at Wyndham Vale South Oval was full of anxious and excited spectators as the two undefeated teams, the Roosters and the Falcons, prepared to battle it out for top spot. From the first bounce Wyndhamvale showed their dominance against the previously top of the ladder team, not letting their opposition score a goal in the opening quarter. Ruckman Matt Manula was the star of the day, winning almost all of the tap outs and trailing the ball constantly. By the time the third quarter rolled around, Wyndhamvale were well and truly in the lead but were struggling to gain possession of the ball in their forward 50, despite a snap goal from Falcon Shannon Evans. The (77) to 2.3 (15) win sees the Falcons perch themselves on top of the ladder as the only undefeated team in the competition, marking them the team to beat as early premiership favourites. Glen Orden travelled to Town Centre Oval last week as they took on Caroline Springs but it was an unhappy ride home for the Hawks, going down (98) to 4.3 (27). Manor Lakes played host to North Footscray, but the Storm could not harness the unstoppable force of the Devils, who walked away victors, winning 2.2 (14) to (123). It was another disappointing match for Sunshine Heights who went down to Yarraville Seddon at Ainsworth Reserve to the tune of 154-points. The Dragons are still yet to register a win this season, and will be keen to atone for the first half of the year today as they come up against Glen Orden. The round eight fixture resets today, as Wyndhamvale go up against their rivals in the local derby against Manor Lakes. The Storm is hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness match where all proceeds from the day will be donated to breast cancer patients. West Footscray will be making the trip to Caroline Springs, where the Roosters are hoping to make up for last week s loss and regain their composure. 31 The AFL has declared all Round 9 matches this season to be part of its Indigenous Round. The idea is to create an opportunity to celebrate the role that indigenous athletes have had in helping to shape our great game. It also recognises that through sport, two cultures that at one stage were poles apart, have been brought closer together. UMPIRES CORNER By Graeme Hodgart During the late 1970s various professional historians began to take a greater interest in the origins of Australian Rules football. It seems that the earliest reports of football in Australia can be traced back to the 1820s. Most likely these games were based on the folk football played in England and Ireland. It has also been suggested that various indigenous football games, one of which was Marngrook, had a part in the beginnings of Australian Rules football. Since the formation of the Footscray District Football League back in 1931, which was the fore runner of the WRFL, participation of indigenous players and officials has slowly risen. Although the numbers would not have been high at any stage, individual clubs would have bore witness to those whose ancestry began in this land long before the coming of white European settlement. One current family with indigenous roots is the Green family from the North Footscray Football Club. Sharon Green is a well-known club official and in recent years often was the time-keeper at Hansen Reserve. Her son, Aaron, officially ran the boundary during 2002 before playing a few years at junior level. Older brother Brian, has been busy waving flags since 2001 and doesn t show any sign of slowing down. Good luck to all players and officials for this weekend s games irrespective of their cultural background or family roots. Australia is truly a multicultural nation and the WRFL teams reflect this as their players run out each week to be part of the action. LAWS OF THE GAME QUIZ #8 Last week s question: Player A has a set shot for goal but the ball comes off the side of the boot, crosses the boundary line on the full near the behind post before striking the boundary umpire who is standing approximately half a metre behind the post. After striking the boundary umpire on the shoulder the ball rebounds and hits the behind post on the full. What happens next? The correct answer was (OPTION A). The boundary umpire blows their whistle, signals out of bounds on the full, hits the behind post three times and the defending team is awarded a free kick. This week s question: Team A has scored a behind. The full-back for Team B is preparing to kick the ball back into play when the field umpire notices an official of the defending team (Team B) inside the 50 metre arc who is not attending to an injured player. What happens next? a) The field umpire awards a free kick to the player standing on the mark from Team A at the top of the goal square. b) The field umpire tells the offending official to move out of the 50 metre arc while the kick out is being taken. c) The field umpire awards a free kick to Team A at the back line of the centre square to the player closest to that location. Be sure to check out the correct answer in next week s WRFL Footy Record. 29 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

34 ROUND WRAP DIVISION THREE SENIORS Last weekend completed the first trimester of a long and gruelling season as teams prepare to face oppositions for the second time. The tone has been set and lines have been drawn. Looking ahead, what have we learned so far? Albanvale are the team to beat. The Cobra s have recorded six victories this season and remain undefeated. The ladder leaders have plenty of depth to their midfield and are the best team in the competition at rebounding from halfback. Sanctuary Lakes pushed Albanvale to the limit two weeks ago and this week s visit to Parkside looms as their biggest test yet. Braybrook are a completely different team. The 2014 premiers were humbled by 110-points in the grand final rematch and languish at seventh on the ladder with just two wins. The Brookers fielded only eight players from the premiership winning team last season and whilst their best football is enjoyable to watch, consistency has been their greatest concern. A second defeat to the Roadrunners this weekend could see them on the bottom of the ladder. The Wyndham Suns are shining. Sitting a game clear in second position, Coach Matthew Stoodley has his young squad firing, having been defeated only once. The Suns pushed Albanvale all the way and can look forward to another crack after this week s pick of the round against Sanctuary Lakes. Parkside and Sanctuary Lakes consistency is holding them back from being serious contenders in Both sides have had some fantastic results so far and have proven to contain plenty of firepower up forward. The only issue is that at times they can concede heavily as well. Parkside are a hot topic on a weekly basis as they continue to manage their list. Both teams at this stage will be expecting to cement a place in the top four by season s end. North Sunshine and Tarneit are much improved in 2015 but are fading. Both sides set the standard early with wins in round one. The Titans were sensational in their draw with the Suns but were left cold by the Pies last week. North Sunshine continue to improve but have recorded only the one win for their efforts. The Magpies sit a game outside the top four with superior percentage to Tarneit and Braybrook. This weekend s match with the Titans is a massive game, with the winner offered a springboard to stay in finals contention. 35 TIV BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING North Sunshine has won its second match for the season and their first since round one, after defeating Sanctuary Lakes by 32-points in front of a home crowd. The Roadrunners led at the end of every change, and were simply too good as they played consistent footy. Michael Hall kicked five goals for the Sharks and was named among Sanctuary Lakes best along with Luke Baker, however the spread of goal kickers in the North Sunshine team would reign supreme, as Josh Granger, Hayden Hunt, Damien Clarke and Andrew Steele kicked two goals each. Teammate Anthony Ryan booted three for his team s cause, while Jamie Cameron and Josh Granger led the charge as the Roadrunners best players. North Sunshine, now sitting in fifth place, will be hoping the win will have a flow on effect as they look to add more wins to their tally, as they put pressure on the top four. In other matches, Braybrook was brought back to earth after being humbled by 110-points by Albanvale, the competition benchmark. Ange Messina kicked seven goals for the Cobras, taking his tally to 31 for the season, having kicked 12 in the past two weeks. He currently leads the goal kicking tally by nine goals, over team mate Matthew Harper. Meanwhile at Wyndham, the Suns accounted for the Laverton Magpies by 93-points in a blowout margin, as the Suns came hard out of the blocks and never looked back. Christopher Neville starred for the home side, kicking six goals. In the round s last game, Tarneit made their first trip to Parkside worthwhile, coming away with the four points after defeating the Magpies by 52-points. After seven rounds, the ladder looks to be split into two, with three wins separating fourth and fifth place. The undefeated Albanvale should continue to dominate the competition as they travel to Henry Turner Oval to square off against Parkside. 44 ROUND WRAP DIVISION ONE U18 The Warriors have withstood an attempted comeback from Werribee Districts to run out 16-point winners on Saturday afternoon. Hoppers Crossing had a decent cushion of 32-points going into the final term, however, Werribee kicked four of the six goals in the last quarter to give the side some hope. Hoppers managed to hang on and record a (77) to 8.13 (61) win over their arch rivals. Jackson Fullerton stood tall for the Warriors booting four goals and named in the best, while teammates Kane Galley, Brandon Houlihan and Nathan Williams were unstoppable all day. Jye King kicked five goals to lead the line in what was a disappointing day for Werribee. Bior Malual, Scott Woods and Daniel Kerruish pitched in with a goal each. The win takes the Warriors to second on the ladder, while Werribee drop out of the top four. In other results, Spotswood continued their winning ways, marching on to a (100) to 2.6 (18) win over Yarraville Seddon. The Woodsmen demonstrated its widespread talent, boasting eight individual goal kickers for the match, with Dali Sulejmani-Blackwell top scoring with three majors. Altona bounced back from its round five loss to defeat Albion by 70-points at JR Parsons Reserve. The percentage boosting win sees the Vikings secure third spot and go one game clear of the highly sought after fourth place, with Werribee and Deer Park battling it out on three wins a piece. Round eight will see a battle for pride as the division s bottom sides in Albion and Yarraville going head-to-head. While the Eagles took home its only win for the season against the Cats in round one, Albion will be looking for revenge as it continues to seek its first win for the year. Altona will host a tantalising match against Deer Park who will be fresh coming off the bye and Spotswood will be looking to extend their lead at LADDER: DIVISION 1 U18 P W L D % PTS SPOTSWOOD HOPPERS CROSSING ALTONA DEER PARK WERRIBEE DISTRICTS YARRAVILLE SEDDON EAGLES ALBION the summit with a match against last year s grand finalists Werribee Districts. 51 ROUND WRAP DIVISION TWO UNDER 18 While we haven t quite reached the halfway point of the season, the top three teams of Werribee Districts, Wyndhamvale and Newport have already opened a three game lead on the rest of the competition. With three finals spots seemingly secured, it s going to be a tight battle for the final two positions and Sanctuary Lakes did their best to keep pace after defeating Albanvale by 96-points last weekend. Off the back of a close loss to the Falcons in round six, the Sharks wasted no time as they opened a 30-point quarter time lead, while also keeping the Cobras goalless. By three quarter time the lead was out to 10-goals and Sanctuary Lakes kept Albanvale scoreless in the last to stroll to an to win. The Sharks had a spread of goalkickers with the main threats being Hayden Vogele with five majors and Aaron La Chimia and Marvin Seevers each booting four. Soakimi Halapio kicked two of Albanvale s three-goals, with Zac Broadway and Nathan Tabb among the best for hapless Cobras. Another crucial result came between Caroline Springs and Sunshine as the Lakers stayed in touch with the top five as they knocked off the Kangaroos by 19-points. Sunshine haven t fared well in close games this season and they were set to be part of another tight one as the sides were split by just two-points at quarter time and six-points at half time. The home side blew the game open in the third quarter as Caroline Springs kicked five-goals to none to lead by 23-points with a quarter to play. An even final term suited the Lakers perfectly and they claimed their second win of the season by a score of to Goals were precious in the game and the Lakers Jacob Tonkinson s three-goals were very important, as was the work by Shaun Ellis and Ricky Coulson who were both among the best, Coulson also adding two-goals. Sunshine s best players included Joseph Gow and Josh O Neill, while Bradley Busuttil kicked four of the Kangaroos seven-goals. In other results, there were also big wins for Newport who defeated Hoppers Crossing by 69-points and Wyndhamvale, who remained unbeaten after a 75-point flogging of Glen Orden. Fourth takes on fifth as Sunshine hosts Hoppers Crossing, Sanctuary Lakes face Caroline Springs, while Newport will remain in third as they have the bye.
