3 BEANIES FOR BIRD By Kirstie Fitzgerald With everyone s batteries recharged following the midseason break, it s time to get down to the pointy end of the season. As we officially start the run down to finals, football fans can look forward to an exciting 10 weeks of suburban football as teams battle it out for top ladder positions. Yet while we are all working hard to reach that last day on the football calendar, we must not forget the value of football clubs and how significant they can be in the community-win, lose or draw. Today, the Port Melbourne Football Club is hosting a Beanies for Brain Cancer Day to not only support one of its own players battling the disease, but more importantly to raise awareness for the illness which touches many Australians each year. In 2015, about 1,820 Australians (1,080 men and 740 women) are expected to be diagnosed with brain cancer. Found more commonly in men, the rate of the disease is set to increase, with an estimated 2,055 Australians expected to be diagnosed with brain cancer by After discovering longtime Colts player Marcel Bouchaud has a stage three brain tumour earlier this year, the club stood beside one of its own and showed its support by running a fundraiser for him in March. While the man commonly known as Bird was overwhelmed by the support he received, today s event is focused on building the awareness of brain cancer and raising funds into researching the disease. With all players from the Port Colts and St.Albans Football Clubs running through one banner wearing beanies in recognition of brain cancer, the club is asking all football fans to get involved and buy a beanie in support of this disease. For more information on the event and how you can get involved, please flick to page 5. In other news, 190 of the WRFL s best junior talent pulled on the red, white and blue representative jumper over the Queen s Birthday weekend to compete in this year s AFL Victoria Junior Metro Championships and Junior Interleague Carnival. Having begun training eight weeks prior to the carnival, all WRFL players produced some exceptional football and were professional in every aspect of the competition. Congratulations to all players, volunteers and coaches involved in this year s interleague carnival and a special thanks to the Altona Juniors, Flemington Juniors, North Sunshine, Wyndhamvale and the Werribee Football Clubs for hosting a number of competition days. For a wrap up of the junior interleague competitions, check out page 3. Of course we have all the latest photo galleries, TV episodes, and match replays at our website, asn.au or keep up to date with our social media pages. Don t forget to tune your headset into 88.9 WYN FM for the best local call in suburban football from 1:30pm this Saturday afternoon for the Match of the Day broadcast between Division One s Port Melbourne Colts v St. Albans. Until then, play hard, kick straight and don t forget to don your beanie this weekend and get behind a great cause! 5 WRFL JUNIORS SHINE BRIGHT IN METRO CHAMPS The future of the WRFL is looking brighter than ever after a dominant AFL Victoria Junior Metropolitan Championships carnival. Played over the Queen s Birthday long weekend, eight WRFL junior teams ranging from Under 16s to Under 13s competed against the top talent from the Northern FL, Southern Eastern Juniors, Riddell District FL, Yarra Juniors FL and South Metro Juniors FL. With only a handful of Junior Interleague matches left to play over the coming weeks, the WRFL is proud to have chalked up a staggering 14 wins from 19 matches for the tournament. In the Junior Interleague Carnival, the U16 squad had a fantastic start to its campaign, defeating RDFL by 22-points, the scoreboard reading WRFL 7.11 (53) def. RDFL 4.7 (31). Elliot Rosado was outstanding for the red, white and blue, booting three goals while teammate Jack Papachatzakis kicked two majors and was also named amongst the best players for the match. The squad will line up to play the Essendon District FL in its second and final game of the competition at Avalon Airport Oval on June 9. The U15 Division 1 squad produced one of its best carnivals for the league in a number of years, winning all three of its matches. The Division 1 squad kicked off its tournament with a good Round 1 win against SEJ (76 to 51), before a dominant Round 2 display over RDFL (114 to 28), followed by a close match over the NFL (70 to 50). Owen King was a stand out for the WRFL side, kicking 16 goals throughout the tournament resulting in King being the lead goal kicker for their division. The U15 Division 2 boys also had a good tournament, coming away with two wins and one loss seeing them finish in second position in their pool. Despite going down to the SEJ by 34-points in Round 1, the team came home strong winning their final two matches, over the RDFL and NFL. Some of the standouts for the Division 2 squad included Darcy Phillips and Lachlan Scholl both scoring five goals across the tournament, along with James Krajina who polled in the best players in each match. Both the U14 Division 1 and Division 2 squads remained undefeated after their three matches, with a nailing biting 2-point win against the NFL capping off the tournament for the Division 1 squad. Joshua Kellett and Alexander Taylor were both standout contributors for the Division 1 squad adding two goals each to the scoreboard in the tight NFL win, while Zac Triplett and Keelan Crimmins were unstoppable for the Division 2 team. The league s two Under 13 squads have been strong competitors in their matches against the EDFL in its first encounters this season. Despite not being able to take home their Round 1 the wins, the Division 1 squad enjoyed victory over the RDFL in Round 2 by 54-points. The two squads will play the EDFL again in its last match for the tournament on June 17. The combined WRFL and EDFL Western Youth Girls team came away with just the one win for the competition against the Yarra Juniors FL B-team in Round 2. Despite going down to a dominant Yarra Juniors A-team, the Western Youth Girls would be proud of its efforts, holding the girls from YJFL to their lowest score in this year s tournament (60 to 20). St.Albans Madison Lister was one of the best players for the Western Youth Girls, scoring three goals and receiving best on ground votes for all three rounds. 6 COACH THE COACHES SEMINAR By Alex Karavas The Werribee Football Club opened its doors on Wednesday night for local coaches to get an insight into some coaching techniques and strategies in its annual Coach the Coaches seminar. The initiative is aimed at coaches who are plying their trade across all age groups to get a firsthand look at how a VFL club goes about dealing with various issues involved in a football club. Werribee Football Club senior coach, John Lamont, and North Melbourne development coach, Jarred Moore, spoke to the group about their experiences in how to use coaching staff effectively out on the training track, as well as how to deal with off field issues that may arise from the previous weekend s game. Coaches also learnt how to deal with difficult personalities, training techniques, planning and preparation, drills, rehab and recovery as well as some of the tactics Lamont and Moore implement on the track. The WRFL had a number of coaches in attendance, including Deer Park Under 18 s coach Pat Christofi, who said he was keen to gain as much as possible from the experience. I m keen to find out some new ideas and learn some different methods I can incorporate in my coaching, he said. I ve done all my (coaching) courses, so I ve come down to see what s going on. Anything that we re not doing, I m prepared to look at and have a crack at. I m happy to pick up a couple of tips, and if I think they are viable, I will use them. Werribee Football Club Community Development Manager, Chris Gallagher said the aim of the night was to better educate TRIBUNAL REPORT Week 8 coaches, as well as give them an oversight into the organisation. The event also helps raise awareness into the types of other activities Werribee conduct in the Wyndham and western region communities including The Huddle and its Schools Football Program, Multicultural Schools Program, Active Kids Program, and the Active-After School Care Program. By using these programs, the Werribee and North Melbourne Football Clubs hope to better educate young kids of all ages into active sport, as well provide them with an opportunity to interact with their football heroes. Both clubs view community support as a core component in building strong and healthy relationships. Here s hoping all coaches in attendance at the coaching seminar can use what they have learnt in the second half of the year when duties resume as normal after the long weekend mid-season break. 7 BEANIES FOR BRAIN CANCER By Kirstie Fitzgerald When 34-year-old Port Melbourne Colts favourite Marcel Bouchaud collapsed on his way home from a workout at his local gym in November last year, he was told he had a heart problem.admitted to hospital less than two months later after suffering a more significant seizure, he was told there was a possibility of epilepsy. However it was not until undergoing scans that the former Colts player was told he had a stage three brain tumour in the form of anaplastic astrocytoma. Since undergoing an operation earlier this year to remove as much of the tumour as possible without damaging his speech and eyesight, the Port Colts Football Club decided to run a fundraiser for him in March. Marcel is a terrific clubman and friend to many at the Colts, senior coach Brad Julier said. He has a great attitude towards everything he does and brings energy both on and off the field. Our fundraising event in March was to benefit him during his treatment, which was a great success. Three months later, the Port Colts Football Club is once again showing its support by dedicating their Round 9 clash with a Beanie for Brain Cancer event on Saturday June 13. In 2015, around 1,820 Australians (1,080 men and 740 women) are expected to be diagnosed with brain cancer. Found more commonly in men, the rate of the disease is set to increase, with an estimated 2,055 Australians expected to be diagnosed with brain cancer by Known by many at the club as Bird, Marcel is not alone in his fight and while overwhelmed by the support he received from the club at the start of the season, wants today s event to be more about raising awareness for the disease. We are hoping to achieve awareness surrounding brain cancer, with all proceeds raised going directly to the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, Julier said. Brain cancer is one of the biggest cancer killers for people under 40 years old, which is essentially the demographic of our footy club. It is also the least funded disease, so hopefully we can raise some funds to make a difference for somebody suffering the same thing as Bird along the way. The day will kick off with an official luncheon with special guest speaker Dr John Tickell who will talk about his own battle with the disease and his survival. Bird Beanies will also be available for purchase on the day, in order to raise awareness into the disease in a similar way TV personality Carrie Bickmore did during her acceptance speech at the Logies last month. Port Colts favourite Marcel Bouchaud dons his beanie to raise awareness for Brain Cancer. A week and a half out from the event, the club has already sold more than 150 beanies and has had a large influx of requests for more. We urge everyone attending the game to wear a beanie on the day and take a photo and share it on social media using the hashtag #Beanie4cancer or #beanie4bird, Julier said. Even if you aren t at the game, take a photo of yourself with your beanie and just spread the word on social media as the more awareness we can raise the better. Players from the Port Colts and St. Albans Football Club will also show their support and wear beanies on the day as they run through the a shared banner. Similar to how Essendon and Collingwood unite as one and run through the banner on Anzac Day, all senior players from both clubs will run through a special Beanie for Brain Cancer banner wearing beanies, Colts president Ben Brown said. All the players have really gotten behind the initiative and the support we have received from the St. Albans Football Club and its president Gus Jimenez has been outstanding. While we are fierce rivals on the field, its time like this when you can put those differences aside and come together for a good cause. Donations can be made on the day with beanies available for purchase for $20, with all money raised going to brain cancer research and education.for more information on the event, visit the Facebook page Beanie4Cancer. 5 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

11 Round 9 has some blockbuster games that will shed some light on how things might pan out in the second half of the season. All eyes will be on Deer Park vs. Hoppers Crossing game at John McLeod Reserve. Questions have been asked of Deer Park this year and so far they have answered them all. Rhett King is a big loss for the Lions as he is the driving force from their half back line, but that is where coach Marc Bullen has scope to work with the depth of his list. Jack Ewer is emerging as a player of the future. Hoppers Crossing has the talent to match Deer Park, especially if Wayde Skipper fires and he will need to against Greenhough and Stewart. The Warriors need to make a statement, they need a big scalp after losing to the Districts before the break and there is no bigger scalp than the Lions. I still think Deer Park will be too good across the ground. The other game that shapes as a very important big picture clash is Spotswood vs Werribee Districts at McLean Reserve. Spotswood have not faltered since round 1 with Deer Park on the horizon again, Tom Langlands will want his team switched on and ready to test themselves against a very good opponent. Districts has been hard to track but the win over Hoppers might just set their season up. Again this is a tough one to pick but I think the home team will just get there. Port Melbourne Colts host the Saints and their Beanies for Bird Day. While I will be there as MC for the fundraising lunch, I don t think it is going to be a winning day on the park for the Colts. St. Albans will still be thinking top three and need to put Colts away to stay in that race. The loser of the Altona vs Sunshine game can just about kiss 2015 goodbye. Both teams have struggled for consistency and given the draw for both in the next month, this game is critical. Jayden Post is playing some very good football for the Vikings and might be the X-Factor that will get them over the line, especially on their big home ground. 12 ROUND WRAP DIVISION ONE RESERVES Hoppers Crossing has handed Werribee Districts its first loss of the season in a stunning 31-point victory. The contest was close all day, as the Warriors lead never stretched beyond three goals at any break until the final siren. Booting three goals and holding Districts to just one in the final term, the 10.9(69) to 6.2(38) win was sewn up. Despite suffering its first loss, the Tigers remain ahead of the Warriors in first place by just 1.19 per cent. Werribee will look to regain their place on the winners list when they travel to face eighth-place Spotswood, while the Warriors will host Deer Park. Away from home, Port Melbourne Colts has managed to win just its second game of the season, narrowly defeating Deer Park by three-points. The low scoring match was tight through all four quarters, with Deer Park leading at the final break. However, the Lions could only manage a solitary point as the Colts took the lead with the only goal in the fourth quarter, which turned out to be the match winner. The 5.11(41) to 5.8(38) win puts the Colts one win above the bottom two places on the ladder, and gives them confidence heading into today s home game against St. Albans. On the contrary, Deer Park will be disappointed to extend its two-game losing streak, after winning four of their first five matches earlier in the season. The Lions must now travel to Hoppers Crossing today in what will be a tough task to overcome. In other results, Sunshine now sits just outside the top four on percentage after its 8.15(63) to 7.3(45) victory over Spotswood. The Kangaroos started strong, leading by 40-points at half-time, however they couldn t maintain its scoring pressure; managing just one goal after the main break. Despite piling on six goals in the second half, the Woodsmen left their run too late eventually going down to the tune of 18-points. Spotswood will host Werribee Districts in their Round 9 battle, while Sunshine will head to Altona, who are coming off the bye. St. Albans has jumped up to third place on the ladder with a dominating win over Albion, running out 16.22(118) to 4.3(27) victors. The Saints were a force of nature as they held the Cats scoreless at halftime, and led by 83-points at three quarter time. 23 TIV BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING If Round 7 cemented the Falcons as flag favourites, Round 8 was vital in another key clash, with Yarraville Seddon now clearly amongst the contending pack. After North Footscray s impressive recruiting drive and early season form which included inflicting the only defeat Wyndhamvale have suffered so far in 2015, this was a big scalp for the Eagles. As the two sides who most recently tasted Division One football went head-to-head, more than just third spot on the ladder was on the line the victor would gain instant credibility as a flag challenger. Such is the evenness of the competition, by jumping out of the blocks early and leading comfortably all day,the Eagles look just that one step ahead of North Footscray and perhaps not too far behind Wyndhamvale and West Footscray. A dominant opening term set the tone for what was to come, as the Eagles managed 14 scoring shots to North s five. The lead never looked in any doubt despite a second quarter challenge from North Footscray. It was Yarraville Seddon s Samuel Boyce doing the majority of damage, kicking four goals and climbing atop the competition s goal kicking tally. The eventual margin (87) to 7.16 (58) perhaps flattered the Devils in a sloppy game and the loss to a similarly ranked side may be telling come finals time. Around the grounds the Roosters were challenged by Caroline Springs but just held on to claim a 7-point victory. While the Lakers were brave the result is perhaps more indicative of the trough West Footscray still find themselves in. The story was similar at Manor Lakes as a gallant Storm fought hard but lacked the class of the Falcons to hang on to the four points, Wyndhamvale running out 29-point winners. Finally, Benjamin Toner put Sunshine Heights to the sword as his seven goal haul led Glen Orden back to the winners list with a thumping 16-goal win. Round 9 offers a genuine opportunity for West Footscray to rejig and find some form against the struggling Sunshine Heights. In a tough time for the Dragons, it really is a matter of all hands on deck. 24 ROUND WRAP DIVISION TWO RESERVES In a special Round 8 twilight match, rivals Wyndhamvale and Manor Lakes met for the second time this season in the local derby down at Howqua Reserve. The Falcons were able to keep their undefeated status alive as the reigning premiers triumphed over the Storm in a spectacular win, 2.2 (14) to (128). Wyndhamvale coach Mark Elso was especially pleased with the performances of James Pomella and Joshua Pigdon but said he is not letting his boys get ahead of themselves for the season, taking every week as it comes. We re not scared of anyone but there are a lot of sides which are competitive, he said. On the day everyone s competitive and if you let your guard down you can end up losing the game. Manor Lakes were disappointed with the defeat in front of a home crowd, the only two goals for the match coming from ruckman Jake Smith and club president Troy Whiting. In other results, the Roosters have celebrated a 43-point win over Caroline Springs. West Footscray s Wajih Taleb dominated on the ground along with teammate Fouad Abdo who booted two majors, helping his team run home 4.1 (25) to 9.4 (68) victors. At Hansen Reserve, it was 3 vs 4 as Yarraville Seddon took on North Footscray in a tight battle. The Eagles were trailing behind by a single goal in the first half but were able to turn that around in the second half, booting three goals to one. While the score line never extended by more than 10 points, the match was sewn up with a last term effort from the Eagles securing a 7.7 (49) to 8.9 (57) victory. Meanwhile, Glen Orden has won their second game for the season against Sunshine Heights at Ainsworth Reserve by 73-points. The Hawks boasted eight individual goal kickers, with Anthony Clamp top scoring with three majors. With all teams enjoying a week off over the Queen s Birthday weekend, Round 9 will see Glen Orden face a determined North Footscray outfit keen to get back on the winners. 31 UMPIRES CORNER By Graeme Hodgart During late May and throughout June, a succession of special junior representative football games are being played. Firstly, there is the AFL Vic Junior Metropolitan Championships that involve eight local football leagues. These include the Eastern, Northern, South Metro, Essendon, South Eastern, Riddell, Yarra Juniors and the WRFL. Games are played in many locations across the state, with each league providing umpires for the various games which are played between teams in the under 14 and under 15 age groups. This is a great opportunity for the WRFL umpires to officiate at a higher junior level where the best players of each age division are pitted against their peers from different leagues. To gain these appointments, the umpires need to be reliable, good communicators, punctual and possess the necessary skills to be successful at this level. These umpires must present themselves, both on and off the field, in a respectable and professional manner. Their umpiring needs to be strong, consistent and also at a top level. In conjunction to the Metro Champs, there is also a series of under 13 and under 16 matches which are contested in the 2015 Junior Interleague Carnival between the Riddell, Essendon and the WRFL. These games are much closer to home, being at Wyndham Vale, North Sunshine and Werribee, and once again each league provides umpires for the games. One WRFL goal umpire, Anthony Muscat, was delighted to be appointed to several of these games. After a brief career as a boundary umpire, Anthony gave up umpiring and was busy with family and work commitments for over ten years. It was only last year that he returned to umpiring and decided that goal umpiring was now his preferred discipline. Due to his continued improvement throughout last season and his consistent form so far this season, Anthony has been rewarded with three of the games allotted to the WRFL umpires. Congratulations to all the field, boundary and goal umpires who have been appointed to these games. We know they all represented the WRFL proudly, put their best foot forward and enjoyed the experience. LAWS OF THE GAME QUIZ #9 Last week s question: Team A has scored a behind. The full-back for Team B is preparing to kick the ball back into play when the field umpire notices an official of the defending team (Team B) inside the 50 metre arc who is not attending to an injured player. What happens next? The correct answer was (OPTION C). The field umpire awards a free kick to Team A at the back line of the centre square to the player closest to that location. This week s question: The field umpire is preparing to throw the ball up in the centre after a goal by Team A when one of the players from Team B who is in the centre square runs across the 10 metre centre circle. What happens next? a) The field umpire awards a free kick to Team A. b) The field umpire waits for the Team B player to get out of the 10 metre circle before throwing the ball up. c) The field umpire awards a second shot on goal to the player from Team A who scored the last goal. Be sure to check out the correct answer in next week s WRFL Footy Record. 29 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

34 ROUND WRAP DIVISION THREE SENIORS The Queen s Birthday has provided clubs ample time to take a deep breathe, address niggling injuries and analyse the first eight pulsating rounds of the season. North Sunshine recorded a second consecutive victory over arch nemesis Braybrook for the first time in almost a decade, over running a tired looking reigning premier by 40-points at Dempster Park. The Brookers signalled their intent to overturn the 16-point defeat from Round 1 and set the pace early before the Roadrunners kicked back to take a 17-point lead into half-time. North tall man Michael Nnadiekwe dominated the ruck despite losing the clearances in the second half. However, the Roadrunners dominated contested possessions to heap the pressure on their fading opponent who kicked three goals in as many inside 50 s. The Brookers couldn t bring the ball inside attack often enough, being beaten for forward entries, the energy showing as North Sunshine dominated possession and applied eight more tackles. Brent Henry was the most influential player on the ground, rewarding his team with seven majors while teammate Jeremy Hibbert cashed in late to slot five. Sam Larizza spent stages at half forward and nailed three himself as Braybrook spearhead Jason Cousins played a loan hand up forward with seven. Hung Phan was the general in the midfield despite spending time on the wing and Jordan Ingham fought hard all day. The historic victory ensured the Roadrunners would leap from the bottom of the table at Braybrook s expense, giving Joe Larizza s men plenty to smile about before they travel to Robert Bruce Reserve to take on an undefeated Albanvale outfit. WRFL commentator Steve Thom suggested that the Cobras would be pushed to the limit against Parkside and that s exactly how it transpired; the Cobras escaping Henry Turner with a classy 17-point win. The Wyndham Suns recorded a sensational sevenpoint victory over a determined Sharks at home. Despite losing two games on the trot, Sanctuary Lakes have been fantastic approaching the break. 35 TIV BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING The Tarneit Titans have made their push towards the top two after producing an upset win over the Laverton Magpies at home. After an even first half, the scores were tied on 31-points apiece, however the Titans were able to pull away in the third term, leading by two goals at three-quarter-time, before icing the game in the last quarter to win by 16-points. The Magpies simply couldn t keep up with the Titans scoreboard pressure, booting just two majors after half time to the Titans five. Nick Williams was the star for the Titans with three goals in what was his first game of the season, while Reece Frost and James Seduikis also chipped in with two goals each. For the Magpies, Justin Fulford kicked two goals in a solid performance, while Matthew Magliarone was among their best players. The win sees the Titans sit in second place, a game clear of third, while Laverton remain in fourth spot. Coming into the second half of the season, the Magpies must continue to compete to remain in the top four, particularly with the Sharks and Roadrunners hot on their heels as they too look to make a charge towards the finals. In other results, Sanctuary Lakes provided the upset of the round after downing the Wyndham Suns by 34-points. Jayden Tandy kicked truly with three of the Sharks 10 goals, while Damian Pendlebury slotted just the one major and named their best player for the day. The Roadrunners meanwhile defeated the Brookers at home by 33-points, with Michael Yates and Anthony Ryan kicking four goals and three goals respectively. The win leaves North Sunshine in fifth, and pressing the top four, while Braybrook remain on the bottom of the table. In the round s final game, Albanvale continued their winning streak, this time at the expense of Parkside. The Cobras led by 36-points at three-quarter-time, before the Magpies pegged the margin back to three goals at the final siren. Albanvale s Ange Messina continued his fine form up forward with three goals. 44 ROUND WRAP DIVISION ONE U18 Spotswood has made its premiership intentions clear, defeating Werribee Districts for the second time this season and opening an eight-point gap on the ladder over Hoppers Crossing in second. Round 1 saw the Woodsmen narrowly defeat Werribee by five-points in what was a cracking grand-final rematch to start the season. This time around, it was not as close, with Spotswood keeping Districts at bay for most of the match on their way to a (74) to 8.6 (54) win. The reigning premiers opened a 10-point lead going into the first break, before both teams exploded in the second term kicking seven goals between them as Werribee cut the lead to just four points at half-time. Both sides traded blows for the rest of the match, the pivotal period coming in the final term where Spotswood s pressure kept Werribee goalless, securing their seventh consecutive win. Joel Menadue bettered his two-goal effort in Round 7 against Yarraville Seddon, to boot a bag of five against the Tigers, with five single goal kickers pitching in for the green and gold. Daniel Kerruish did all he could up front to keep Werribee in the contest kicking three goals along with Bailey James who added two. Around the grounds, Deer Park were the big winners on the weekend making ground on second spot with a gutsy away win over Altona. Mark Galea and Joshua Schembri both booted four majors apiece in the 15.6 (96) to 5.5 (35) victory over the previously third place Vikings. At JR Parsons Reserve, the Eagles sang the song for the first time this season after defeating Albion by 88-points. Yarraville-Seddon boasted 10 individual goal kickers in the win, with spearhead Alex Bouris booting five majors while teammate Lachlan Huell chipped in with three. Round 9 will be headlined by the second versus third clash between Deer Park and Hoppers Crossing at John McLeod Oval, with the winner taking a stranglehold on second position. 51 ROUND WRAP DIVISION TWO UNDER 18 When Werribee Districts travelled to Wyndham Vale South Reserve to take on the Falcons, only one team would keep its perfect season intact and remain undefeated after eight-rounds. Werribee Districts started the game a spot above Wyndhamvale on the ladder, but only on percentage. They quickly sought about widening the gap with a dominant five-goals to zip opening term. Trailing by 32-points at quarter time, Wyndhamvale closed the gap to 25-points at the half, yet a four-goals to two third-quarter for the Tigers saw the visitors take a 38-point lead into the final term, a lead which seemed insurmountable. Wyndhamvale didn t lie down and stormed home, kicking five-goals to one, yet still fell short. Despite a spirited fight back, the visiting Tigers cemented its place on top of the ladder and remain unbeaten after a hard fought 11-point win. The final margin 12.7 (79) to 10.8 (68). A spread of goalkickers for Werribee Districts helped them across the line, as did the efforts of Aaron Law and Matthew Currao. Stefan Kaa continued his strong goalkicking form with four-goals for the Falcons, while Mikey Jansen was one of their best in the loss. While the top two sides battled to remain unbeaten, the bottom two sides scrapped it out for their first wins of the season. Glen Orden proved too strong as they overcame a slow start to cruise home by 33-points over bottom-placed Albanvale. The Cobras led by 15-points at the first change, yet were held scoreless in the second quarter as the Hawks opened a 31-point half time lead with seven-goals of their own. The lead was still 22-points at the final break and Albanvale could only manage the solitary final quarter goal, eventually losing 13.5 (83) to 7.8 (50). Xavier Cassar helped his side earn their first win with a game high three-goals, while Jarrod Smith was among the best for the Hawks. Albanvale could only manage the seven-goals and four of those came from Sam Bonnici and Zac Broadway who both booted two. In other games, Sanctuary Lakes moved into fifth spot with a 30-point win over Caroline Springs and Hoppers Crossing sit comfortably in fourth after their 38-point win over Sunshine.
