3 By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS THIS weekend is the Western Region Football League s Gambling s Not A Game Round. This is part of the league s partnership with the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation s youth engagement strategy which addresses community concern over the growing influence of gambling on young people through sports. This program complements the Leagues wish to assist clubs in creating healthy, successful, welcoming and safe environments for their players, officials, supporters and the general football club community. Clubs can become involved in this program by signing up to a Responsible Gambling Charter and will be supported in their activities by Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation education officers. This round is a great opportunity for the WRFL to introduce to clubs, supporters and the wider community this new partnership. Gambling in our community is fast becoming a big social problem and this initiative gives the league a chance to put a spotlight on an issue that affects many Victorians. More and more ads about gambling continue to appear in our everyday life, whether it be on television, on social media or at a sporting event, which is why the Gambling s Not A Game campaign is an important one to support. CONTENTS Junior News...3 Gamling s Not A Game Division 1 Senior/Reserves Player Profile Division 2 Senior/Reserves WRFL FOOTY RECORD Western Region Football League Level One, Whitten Oval, Footscray OFFICE: (03) KICKIN IT WITH KRISTEN Editorial Issue 4, April 30th 2016 THE WRFL IS TACKLING THE ISSUE OF GAMBLING The Study of Gambling and Health in Victoria, Findings from the Victorian prevalence study 2014, which was released late last year stated sports betting increased from 3.96 per cent 4.82 per cent in six years. There was also a significant increase in sports betting among problem gamblers. If we as a community can work together to encourage others to get help about their gambling or get a young person to think twice before gambling then we will be well on our way to changing the views on gambling. This round will also see the Caroline Springs and Yarraville Seddon Eagles Football Clubs go head-tohead for the Gambling s Not A Game Cup. The two Division 2 teams will play for the inaugural trophy at Town Centre Oval today. If the Lakers continue its unbeaten start to 2016 they will earn the trophy. It will be the first bit of silverware the senior club will have on their shelves. Also a reminder to WRFL fans to tune your stereo or listen live through the WRFL Team App to 88.9 WYN FM from 1.30pm for the WRFL Match of the Day Broadcast of the Division 1 match between Hoppers Crossing and Altona. 5 TAYLOR Mesiti has been playing football for as long as she can remember. But, after breaking her collarbone, she faced an extended stint on the sidelines and began to contemplate what her future may look like if she stopped playing footy. After recovering from injury she realised she still had a passion for footy and wanted to keep playing the game she grew up loving. The young gun played with the boys at Deer Park in the WRFL for several years, before joining its Youth Girls team in the Western Youth Girls competition. Last year she also got to play for Deer Park in the Victorian Women s Football League. Taylor will now get the chance to showcase her skills at a national level after being selected to represent Vic Metro at the AFL Youth Girls National Championships next month. I love playing in a team environment, if one succeeds, another does, she said. WRFL NEWS MESITI READY FOR YOUTH GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIPS Held between May 2 and 6 the AFL Youth Girls National Championships sees players from across Australia go head-to-head for the national title. Nine players from the combined EDFL and WRFL competition have either made the team or has been named as an emergency. They include, Taylor Mesiti, Monique Conti, Sarah Dargan, Anna Hayes, Isabel Huntington, Madison Prespakis, Prudence Cordes, Stacey Smith and Eliza Vale. AFL Victoria Female Development Manager Chyloe Kurdas said selection was extremely tight this year, with final squads selected after a series of training camps. Our Vic Metro team is really excited to be challenged and achieve further growth in front of our home crowds, she said. Taylor said she wasn t just looking forward to the event she said she was also looking forward to 2017, a year that is shaping up to be a big one for women s football. The AFL Youth Girls National Championships will be played at various venues in Melbourne. MATHIANG CHAK NAMED IN WORLD SQUAD WERRIBEE DISTRICTS rising star Mathiang Chak was selected in the initial World Squad after impressing at the recent Diversity Championships in Townsville. Chak, who finished fifth in last year s Under-14A Best and Fairest Count, was part of the Victorian team who were runners-up in the championship. The talented midfielder was one of eight Victorian s to be selected in the World team, he will be joined by Edward Gattick, Emmanuel Ajang, Ako Warakea, Paul Sidhu, Marlyn Staunton, Tot Kok and Biggie Nyuon. The World Team squad was selected by AFL Club Recruiters and was based on school attendance, leadership skills and football ability. AFL Victoria chief executive officer Steven Reaper said it was exciting to see young multicultural juniors get their chance to showcase their skills on the national stage. A number of AFL players have launched their careers through programs such as this, and we are looking forward to seeing the next generation of stars come through the ranks, he said. With dedication, commitment, and further development, these guys have a big future in the game. Chak has also had a great start to the 2016 WRFL season, impressing in all of his matches. The World Squad, which will be coached by former AFL star David Rodan, will next compete at the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships on the Gold Coast in July. 3 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

6 GAMBLING S The Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation has adopted a youth engagement strategy to address community concern over the growing influence of gambling on young people through sports. The Foundation has identified, problem gambling could be as much as three to four times higher amongst young people than in adults and is more prevalent in males. Football provides the Foundation with a readymade target market to raise awareness of the risks associated with gambling as football involves significant numbers of young (and older) males every week across the footy season. The Foundation is using the Gambling s Not a Game campaign as their vehicle to address this issue. This program complements one of the Western Regions Football Leagues objectives; to assist clubs in creating healthy, successful, welcoming and safe environments for players, officials, supporters and the general football club community. The Foundation realises that this is a long term program which involves changing, in some cases, entrenched attitudes. The program will be rolled out across clubs over several years with 12 clubs in the western region being sourced to start the program in Importantly, the Foundation realises that clubs are run by volunteers who in most cases are already putting in too many hours now. Therefore as part of the program they are making available Gamblers Help Educators to assist clubs in delivering the program. During the season the league will be using the record, website, newsletter, etc., to promote this program while each of the 12 clubs participating will be delivering their own club activities. Ask your club whether they are involved in this important community program. A Q&A WITH WRFL CEO BOB TREGEAR Why has the WRFL got involved in this program? We were approached by the Foundation earlier this year to be involved in the roll out of this program in 2016 after it was test marketed in 2015 with a couple of metropolitan Melbourne and country Victoria football leagues. We want to support clubs establish healthy, successful, safe and family friendly club environments. Every day we read, see or hear about how social problems such as drugs, violence, gambling and drinking can negatively impact on our communities. Football clubs are not insulated from these issues. We saw this involvement with the Foundation as an opportunity to openly address the adverse consequences of problem gambling as well as provide knowledge about the support that is available for those affected by problem gambling. Why problem Gambling? Problem gambling was taken up primarily because there was a program available specifically set up for clubs. That does not mean we won t get involved in other programs that address these important social issue. We will certainly get involved in appropriate programs that are made available to us or developed by us, as they all need to be addressed. ISIS Community Educator Carmen Senserrick and WRFL CEO Bob Tregear sign-off on the new partnership. Picture: KRISTEN ALEBAKIS 4

7 NOT A GAME Yarraville Seddon Eagles captain Gareth Newton, ISIS Community Educator Carmen Senserrick and Caroline Springs captain Chris Bestall. Picture: KRISTEN ALEBAKIS What does the program entail? The league will initially be responsible for coordinating the signing up of clubs to the program as well as promoting the program through all of our communication channels to all football followers in the west. We have arranged a Gambling s Not a Game round which is on this weekend as well as be involved in other activities that support our clubs in their delivery of the program to their communities. The Clubs will be requested to sign up to the Responsible Gambling Charter which is their commitment to implement responsible gambling practices in their club through minimising the exposure of gambling activities and advertising to young people, and to raise awareness about the potential risks of gambling in the club community. Clubs will be required to hold at least one information session delivered by the Foundations Community Educators. Clubs will also be requested to appoint two Charter Champions who will be the link between the club and their Community Educator. What will clubs get out of this involvement? All our clubs should be involved in these sort of community social problems because they will exist to some extent within their club environment. Players, coaches and volunteers within clubs cannot be expected to be experts in these areas and quiet expectedly shy away from doing anything about them. However, in programs like this, where external experts are available to support clubs, answer questions and give guidance clubs can confidently address these issues, and should. Clubs who take on this program will be seen by their local council and wider community as genuinely trying to do something within their club community to address a widespread community social problem. There is no doubt that being involved in such a program will assist in building strong relations with local councils. In a similar vein, existing and potential sponsors will view clubs that get involved in these type of programs as clubs who demonstrate a desire to improve their own club environment and care about their community. 5 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

12 DIVISION 1 ROUND WRAP SENIORS ALBION TO CHERISH DEER PARK WIN By KEVIN HILLIER FOOTBALL is a funny game though I doubt Deer Park coach Marc Bullen could find anything amusing about his sides display on Saturday against Albion. They lost badly to a team that is young and hungry. While there was no Fevola, there still was Stewart, Perkins, McHarg, King, Quick, Van Reit, McKenzie and many other premiership players. Full marks to Aaron Tymms and his Cats. It is a win they will cherish for a very long time. It also tells every Division 1 club that there is no name on the 2016 premiership cup yet. It is very much up for grabs. Albion s Troy Kelm is off to a flying start to the season and he certainly sets the tone for the team. Albion has the chance this week to knock over the other grand finalist from 2015 when they travel to Soldier s Reserve. You don t often see both grand finalist beaten in the same week by teams that did not play finals last year, as happened this week. The message here is - turn up to play, don t just turn up. I have no doubt Deer Park will bounce back this week when they face Spotswood. In the last couple of seasons Deer Park have really given it to Spotty and seem to intimidate them. They will try the same thing this Saturday no doubt. Spotswood needs to make a statement and show Deer Park they have the mental strength to match the reigning premiers. DIVISION 1 SENIORS TEAM P W L D PTS % Albion Deer Park Werribee Districts Sunshine Hoppers Crossing Altona Spotswood St. Albans are desperate for a win to get their season started. They were in the game against Altona but the Vikings held sway. The Saints look good on paper, but are not producing the goods. They will be in trouble if they underestimate Wyndhamvale. The Graham brothers will need to be at their best, but the Falcons are more than capable of scoring an upset. Our radio match of the day is Hoppers Crossing v Altona at Hogans Road Reserve. This should be a great game. Both sides like to run and with quality like Post, Robbins and Lunardi for Altona and Skipper, Ryan and Miles for Hoppers, it will be good game to watch. Ferrari and Bentley are emerging as match winners for the Warriors as Steve Kretiuk develops his younger brigade into a team to play finals. If the results from last weekend threw the cat amongst the pigeons, this weekend has the potential to turn the entire competition on its head. I love it. St Albans Wyndhamvale Hoppers Crossing proved too strong for Spotswood, scoring its first win of the season. Picture: DARRELL JONES 10 DIVISION ONE

13 RELENTLESS PRESSURE HELPS KANGAROOS By CONNOR PAIN A SIX-goal third quarter has helped Sunshine cruise to a 53-point win over Werribee Districts. The Kangaroos were the stronger side all day, as the Districts looked under matched against the relentless pressure of Sunshine. A combination of forward pressure by the home side and mistakes by the visitors saw the Roos jump out to a 22-point lead at the first break. The Districts hit back in the second term, kicking two goals to bridge the gap. Despite this, neither side could take control of the game as most of the quarter was played in the middle third of the ground. The third quarter saw the Kangaroos take over, constantly beating the Districts to the ball and not allowing them to get the ball out of its back half without pressure. The final term continued on from the third, as Sunshine had six scoring shots to four, to run out (89) to 5.6. (36) victors. The win sees the Roos sit in third place on the ladder, just behind the Districts on percentage. Sunshine has the week off with the bye, while Werribee will host Albion. After a tight first quarter, Hoppers Crossing managed to get on top of Spotswood on Saturday. Hoppers kept their opposition to just two goals for the match, while they managed to pile 11 goals on the scoreboard, in what was a relentless attack. The 66-point win puts the Warriors into a good position on the ladder, as they are 262 percentage points and four competition points ahead of the Districts, who are in second position. Round 4 sees Hoppers Crossing take on Altona and Spotswood travelling to Deer Park. Meanwhile, Altona earnt its first win of the season in a 27-point victory over St. Albans. A four-goal last quarter helped the home side keep the Saints at bay. DIVISION 1 ROUND WRAP RESERVES Adam Magnabosco led the way for the Vikings with three goals, as James Mead, Bill El Souki and Jye Comeadow also all added two goals each. St. Albans will look to bounce back against struggling Wyndhamvale in its next match. Deer Park also managed to jump into the top four after its (47) to 5.6. (36) win over Albion. The game was close all day, as neither side could take full control of the match. The Lions were able to hold on, despite only scoring four behinds in the final term, to win by 11-points. 22 DIVISION 2 ROUND WRAP SENIORS DEVILS SCORE BIG WIN AGAINST COBRAS By ALEX KARAVAS ALBANVALE returned from their bye last weekend playing hosts to North Footscray. Last seasons division three premiers remained undefeated going into the clash and received the shock with North Footscray piling on 15 goals to one in what was a dominant first-half display. Led by Sam Kater who kicked six, Tyren Montebruno who kickied five, and Blake Pilkington who kicked four, North Footscray were able to not only pile on the pressure but the goals as well. Things didn t get any easier after the break with North Footscray piling on a further 13 goals to Albanvale s six, to finish off resounding 145-point winners. Mathew Plummer was the Cobras best afield in a somewhat dour afternoon. Caroline Springs played host to Glen Orden in a game that was expected to be one of the best in division two for the weekend. The Lakers started off slowly with the Hawks going into quarter time with a seven point lead. From there on the Lakers grabbed the ascendancy and kicked a six goals to one second quarter to go into the main break 25-points up. Led by Mathew Sutton who bagged another 10 goals and Troy Manolis, Nathan Knuckey who kicked three each, the Lakers were able to come out after half-time and continue their dominance on the match to run out 88-point winners. For Glen Orden, Dane Thomas kicked three, Jonathan Miller, Josh Macdonald and Bailey James all kicked two a piece. In the last game of the round Manor Lakers hosted Yarraville Seddon. The Storm started off the strongest with a 5.7 to 3.3 first quarter. In the second quarter though the Storm went goalless whilst the Eagles managed to grab the game by the horns to kick a four goal second quarter and go into the main break 13-points up. After the break though things got ugly for the Storm as they went goalless for the rest of the game. The Eagles were able to kick 13 goals in the second half. Led by Scott Krakouer and Kevin Upton who kicked three each, the Eagles were able to run out 88-point victors. Their win sets up what will be an exciting Round 4 match with Caroline Springs. 23 CAROLINE Springs have had a strong home game win after they defeated Glen Orden, in the ANZAC Spirit match on Saturday. From the first bounce the Lakers kept possession of the ball, not allowing Glen Orden to hit the scoreboard throughout the first half. Aaron King was scored a massive six goals for the Lakers. His teammate David Cavanagh also hit the scoreboard, booting five goals of his own. Glen Orden managed to hit the scoreboard in the third term, with two behinds, but other than that couldn t trouble the scores. The Hawks were left goalless. Winning by 140-points, Caroline Springs were all smiles when they left the field, their voices could be heard by all as they sang their song with pride in the change rooms. Caroline Springs were not the only team to win by a large margin, with big wins all across the board in Round 3 action of the Western Region Football League. Spectators who came to see a home ground victory were extremely disappointed as Manor Lakes lost to Yarraville Seddon down at Howqua Reserve. The Storm was another team unable to put a score on the board, losing 0.0. (0) to (185). North Footscray remain undefeated after they took on Albanvale up at Robert Bruce Oval. In a brilliant triumph, the Devils were able to defeat the Cobras, 3.1. (19) to (128). West Footscray had a bye in the previous round. This round will see Albanvale travel to Heathdale Oval, as they match up with Glen Orden. Albanvale will head into the match as favourites, however Glen Orden will be hoping to get their first win for the season. Caroline Springs are reading to take on Yarraville Seddon, these two teams seem to be evenly matched, meaning spectators are in for a great contest. 32 DIVISION 3 ROUND WRAP SENIORS SUNS SCORTCH ROADRUNNERS FOR FIRST WIN By WILL ZWAR THE Wyndham Suns season brightened up in Round 3, as they took their first win against a determined North Sunshine outfit. In a seesawing affair, the Suns rose early to take a three goal lead at quarter time, playing a very strong brand of footy that would not concede a goal. However, the Roadrunners bounced back, kicking five out of six second quarter goals that would see them hold all the momentum as well as a 6-point lead heading into the second-half. Although as Wyndham returned to the scoring end, they restricted the Roadrunners to a solitary behind for a second quarter, whilst managing to scalp a five-point lead setting up an enticing final term. While North Sunshine would keep with the Suns, Wyndham s defensive pressure proved too strong. The Roadrunners were too inconsistent on the day, with the Suns prevailing by 12-points. Dean Cachia provided the Suns with a lynchpin up forward, ending up with four goals for the day, while North Sunshine had a more even spread with six individual goal scorers. Rhys Bucktin was important for the Suns, and Andrew Borg also chipped in with a goal to go with his fine performance. In the other matches, Newport Power picked up from where they left off last week, destroying Parkside by 98-points. Tarneit meanwhile continued their winning form picking up a close nine-point win against the Sharks which sees them in 4th place. They are the only undefeated team in the competition. In the big ANZAC day clash, Sunshine Heights prevailed over the Laverton Magpies by 36-points. This weekend, Tarneit and North Sunshine are set to play in what should be game of the round, with Tarneit looking likely, although the Roadrunners will be eager to bounce back after its Round 3 loss. Meanwhile, Parkside will host Laverton in the Magpie Match. Parkside will be looking to get their name back on the winners list after two disappointing results, while Laverton will also be eager to notch its first victory of the season. Sanctuary Lakes host the Brookers after their week off, while the Suns will travel to Sunshine Heights in what will be another high quality game of football. Ladder leaders Newport Power have the bye, and give the remaining teams a chance to catch up to them before Round 5. Twitter 30 DIVISION THREE

33 ANOTHER dominant performance by the Magpies highlighted this week s action in the WRFL as they continued their rich vein of form. Off the back of a barnstorming victory against Braybrook, the Newport Power couldn t sustain their momentum as Parkside ran away by 63-points. After a strong first quarter kicking four goals to none, the Magpies kept the Power at bay as they went three for three so far this season. Christopher Hall starred for Parkside, booting six majors to hold top spot in the goal-kicking race for the league. Hall and teammate Mark Folwell combined to kick 11 of Parkside s 13 goals in a superstar display, the two players were the difference between the two sides. The Wyndham Suns were big winners over the North Sunshine Roadrunners, with the Suns completely tearing their opponents a part to the tune of 143-points. In what was shaping up to be a close encounter based on early season form turned into a demolition job very quickly. After a tight first quarter, Wyndham outscored North Sunshine 21 goals to just three, with 11 different goalkickers, eight of which were multiple contributors. Brett Cook, Grant Jones and Chris Neville all starred with Cook and Neville kicking four goals apiece, in what was an all-round performance. The individual performance of the round came from Tarneit s Troy Whiting in their big victory against Sanctuary Lakes at Wotten Road Reserve. He booted 10 goals in a brilliant showcase of skill and athleticism. Reece Frost and Benjamin Arabit were consistent throughout the day for Tarneit as they consolidated their strong form in 2016 so far. Capping off an exciting weekend, Laverton and Sunshine Heights played out an absolute thriller on ANZAC day as Sunshine won by the smallest of margins. 39 UMPIRES CORNER TRADITION CONTINUES FOR WRFL UMPIRE UNIFORMS By GRAEME HODGART THIS season the umpires are wearing the same traditional outfit and colours that they have been using for quite a few years. Many of the other metropolitan umpires associations have opted for more colourful designs which are more in-line with the AFL outfits. The first few weeks of the season can be a hectic time for the umpiring group especially the newcomers who need to be fitted with an appropriate uniform. Often you may see some of the field and boundary umpires running around in plain white shirts or white shorts. One goalie was kitted out in his usual Geelong umpiring kit which was distinctive because it was orange. Unfortunately supplies of the required shorts, shirts, caps, socks and jackets aren t always on hand. Some gear keeps re-appearing long after it was initially used. Believe it or not, but these are true stories. In round one of this season a trainee goal umpire in the Under-19 grade was spotted wearing an old VFA jacket from 1990! And there was another goalie last season who had on a FDFL jacket that was dated from At the beginning of this season there was a new goal umpire who needed flags for the approaching weekend, but the only ones available were the old training ones. No matter. They did the job. One of the last games where they were used was the 1981 Under-17B FDFL grand final when Wembley Park (83) defeated Parkside (72). Their owner was Sam McFerran, brother of Henry. Luckily instead of throwing them out, Henry gave them to the goalies to use at training. Hopefully as the weeks go by more and more of the umpires will be seen in the correct uniforms. It will also be interesting to see what happens next season with the umpires uniform as the WRFL is expected to take over the job of ordering and distributing the gear for umpires. There may indeed be a change in the wind. LAWS OF THE GAME QUIZ #2 Last week s question: A full forward from Team A in the WRFL gathers the ball in the goal square and runs into the open goal. As he goes to kick the ball he is correctly bumped by an opposition player and the ball comes off the full forward s knee and goes through the goal. What happens next? The correct answer was (OPTION C). The field umpire calls all clear and the goal umpire raises one leg and taps the knee three times before signalling a behind. (See Law 1.1). This week s question: Player A is reported for abusive language by the field umpire, shown a yellow card and is sent off the field for 15 minutes. Later in the game the same player is reported for attempted striking. What happens next? (a) (b) (c) Player A is allowed to continue playing as it was only an attempted striking offence. Player A is shown a red card and is sent from the field for the rest of the game. Player A is shown a yellow card and is sent from the field for another 15 minutes.. 50 UNDER 19 S ROUND WRAP DIVISION 2 POWER WIN WITH THE LAST KICK OF THE GAME By NICK GALEA NEWPORT Power have won a heart stopper against Albion, 9.8. (62) to 9.4. (58) at Langshaw Reserve to remain the only undefeated side in the Under-19 Division 2 competition. In a match that promised much, it did not disappoint with the game going down to the last kick. In a highly contested opening quarter, Albion wasn t able to capitalise on a slight breeze and found themselves up by just one point at quarter time. This was due to Newport playing a loose man down back for long periods of the quarter. A free kick was awarded to Albion prior to the half time siren as a melee broke out. Deon Darhda was the beneficiary of the free which became a 50 metre penalty, taking him to the goal square gifting the Cats with a four point advantage heading into the main break. Albion lead by as much as 22 points midway through the third term after a run of four consecutive goals and looked to be in control as Newport came to a halt. Hamza Abdo was well held for most of the third quarter, however Abdullah El-Hassan sparked the Power bring it back to 16 points at three quarter time. Newport started the final term in the best possible way scoring a goal within a minute. Albion s defence was under siege with countless inside 50s for Newport. The intensity lifted drastically as the game approached red time. UNDER 19 B TEAM P W L D % PTS Newport Power Werribee Districts Albion Newport s Tyler Johnston put them in front only for Ahmed Mesto to regain the lead for Albion a few minutes later. It seemed enough, but Youssef El Hawli was cool under tremendous pressure to kick the winner and spark jubilant celebrations. Newports s Hamza Abdo played with bursts of pace and was best on ground. Chehab El-Dannani and Lachlan Carpio also gave good support. For Albion, Jacob Tonkinson was a rock down back, Cooper Muir took a nice hanger in the second quarter and moved around the ground well. The other Division 2 result had Sanctuary Lakes recording their first win of the season over Wyndhamvale at Featherbrook Reserve. In what was a tight tussle for three quarters, Sanctuary Lakes dominated the last term to win by 30 points. Sanctuary Lakes Luke Coleiro, Adam Elbob, Luke Duskovic and Marvin Seevers continued there early season form. Wyndhamvale s bests were Brenton Cox, Jason Leigh Roberts and Jayme Gilmore who kicked three goals. Wyndhamvale Sanctuary Lakes Newport Power managed to score a big win with the last kick of the day against Albion at Langshaw Reserve. Picture: NICK GALEA 48 UNDER 19 S DIVISION 2
