3 By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS LAST weekend, 10 junior teams were crowned champions for 2016 after winning their respective Grand Final matches. It was a fantastic day at both Junior Finals venues, with large crowds supporting all teams. While it was great to see so many happy and ecstatic faces when the final siren sounded, it is also important to note that all teams can t win the premiership. There were plenty of tears after games and people looking back at what could have been, but instead of Grand Final day being about who wins or loses, it should be a celebration of footy. All juniors should be proud of their achievements this season and should hold their heads high. Tarneit s Under-12 coach Leigh Gallop said it best when he said his team were already winners in his eyes, regardless of whether or not they win or lose on Sunday. The story of Tarneit s Under-12 team is an inspiring one. The team was one of the club s foundation teams back in 2014 and over the past couple of years have battle their way through each season. After winning just three games last year the team now finds themselves playing in the Under-12C Grand Final on Sunday. It is a story that I am confident will motivate and encourage not only junior teams but seniors teams to never give up. I wish them and all of the other junior teams playing in Grand Finals the very best of luck. In senior news, this weekend marks the last home and away game for Divisions 1, 2 and 3. Eighteen rounds have come and gone with the 2016 Finals Series kicking off across the west next weekend. The Division 1 Grand Final will be played on September 11 at Whitten Oval, the Division 2 final will be at Avalon Airport Oval in Werribee on September 4 and the Division 3 Grand Final is on September 3 at Wootten Road Reserve. It is shaping up to be a cracking four week series. I hope to see many of you out and about supporting #TheBestOfTheWest Finally, if you take any photos from Week 4 of Junior Finals and would like it to be featured online or in the next edition of the Footy Record, please it to k.alebakis@wrfl.asn.au The WRFL Footy Show will also be continuing over the junior and senior finals series. I will be out and about interviewing players, coaches and volunteers who are a part of the finals series. 5 TWO of the WRFL s junior rising stars were named in the School Sport Australia Under-15 All- Australian team after impressing at the national carnival last month. Altona Juniors star Emerson Jeka and St Bernard s young gun Jeremy O Sullivan were both picked in the All- Australian team after standout performances for Victoria during the week-long event. The dynamic duo have had some experience playing alongside each other, they both represented the WRFL at the Junior Metro Championships. Vic Metro claimed the school title, going through the carnival undefeated. Emerson was the standout forward in the competition, kicking 19 goals in five games. It was an unbelievable experience for me, he said. To play with so many talented kids was a huge highlight and winning the championship was the best. I was happy with my performances and was so glad when I was selected for the All-Australian team. I m very proud to be in the team, but more happy that we won as a team. Spotswood s Ethan Bentley and Werribee Districts Lachlan Rzanovski were also involved in the Under-15 Victorian team. Emerson said he has made some great friends with his new team-mates and said the overall School Sport Australia experience was a positive one. This year, Emerson has also had an incredible season with the Altona Juniors, booting 59 goals. He said his next footy goal was to make the 2017 Under-16 Brad Johnson squad. I want to play well and be selected for the Vic Metro team to play in the National Championships, my dream is to be WRFL NEWS DYNAMIC DUO PICKED IN ALL-AUSTRALIAN TEAM By KRISTEN ALEAKIS TRIBUNAL REPORT Results of the WRFL Tribunal from 6th and 7th August drafted in a couple of years time, Emerson said. 7 WRFL NEWS TARNEIT S HISTORY MAKING UNDER-12 TEAM By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS REGARDLESS of Sunday s Grand Final result, Tarneit s Under-12C side are already winners, according to coach Leigh Gallop. Gallop s side is the first team in Tarneit s three-year history to reach a Grand Final. Most of the juniors playing in the Under-12C team were part of Tarneit s foundation team in After a difficult first two seasons, including winning just three games in 2015, the team now finds themselves preparing for a Grand Final showdown with the Flemington Juniors. In Round 1 we played Flemington and we knew they were a team expected to do well and they defeated us and we thought we could be in for another long year, Gallop said. We lost two of our top players, one of our 10-year-old players tore his hamstring off the bone, so we had our backs to the wall. But credit to the players, they have worked extremely hard and now we are in a Grand Final. Tarneit finished the regular season in fifth position and have overcome Point Cook, West Footscray and St Bernard s over the first three weeks of finals to earn a spot in the final game of the year. UMPIRES RECOGNISED AT AWARDS NIGHT THE WRFL Umpires Association handed out awards at its annual Junior Umpire Presentation Night last week. First and second year umpires were honoured, with senior officials and umpires who officiate and mentor on Sunday s also in attendance. Special guests on the night included former WRFL Umpires Luke Wilke and Julian Ensink who are currently umpiring in the VFL. Wilke is a boundary umpire and Ensink is a goal umpire. THIS YEAR S WINNERS WERE Best 1st Year Boundary Umpire: Sarah Auciello, Riley Smith, Nina Morrison, Harry Morrison and Leo Mullaly. Best 1st Year Goal Umpire: Bradley Heffernan. The Bulldogs, Roosters and Bernard s all defeated the Titans during the 2016 season. Gallop said he was extremely proud of what his young side has been able to achieve. I have always said that on our best day we could give the top sides a run for their money, he said. It is amazing at such a young age how much of a mental battle it is. What has changed over the past four weeks is that our players have mentally found the confidence to play against these teams. The feeling among the players, coaches and families after that first elimination final win against Point Cook was incredible. I don t think there has been a dry eye in the house over the past three games. Gallop said he will tell his players what he has told them for the past three weeks, to do your best. They are winners in my eyes already, no matter what they result. Tarneit will take on the Flemington Juniors at Galvin Park on Sunday at 8.45am. Most Improved Umpire: Oliver Hunt-Stapleton, Reggee Auld, Violet Cumming-Gray. President s Award: Shannon Van Boven. Bruce Pain Award: Noah Piggott. The WRFL congratulates all umpires for their efforts throughout the 2016 season. Best 1st Year Field Umpire: Daniel Bray, Kyle Machado, Mark Ritchie, Thobey Burgio, Brayden Svilar and Zakary Cikala. 12 DIVISION 1 ROUND WRAP SENIORS FINAL ROUND BATTLE BEFORE FINALS By KEVIN HILLIER THIS week we farewell five of our Division 1 teams for 2016 and they will, for the most part, be pleased to see it over and done with. Wyndhamvale will take the wooden spoon, but they can take a lot out of their debut season in Division 1. They only won two games, but they were highly competitive for most of the season and will be looking for their new coach to take them to the next level. The Graham brothers were the standouts, and retaining them might be very difficult especially Brian, who is most likely to be at a higher level. On Saturday they are at home to Sunshine in a game they could have won. They won t because the Falcons sadly are out of petrol. Sunshine has been the disappointment of the season by a very large margin. The Kangaroos won three of their first four games, and a top three looked possible, but they went winless for 11 weeks until the victory last week over Altona. It is back to the Kinder Smith drawing board to breathe some life into the Roos, but they will win today. Altona has been a tipsters nightmare and there is nothing to suggest they are certainties against Albion. Maybe they are saving themselves for the elimination final next, but unless they lift they will be experiencing Mad Monday sooner rather than later. Albion has signed a new coach and most of their DIVISION 1 SENIORS TEAM P W L D PTS % Deer Park Hoppers Crossing Werribee Districts Altona Spotswood St Albans Sunshine promising young players, so they have a lot to look forward to once the final game of the season is over. Spotswood can fall out of the five if they lose to Werribee Districts and St Albans beat Deer Park. In that scenario the Saints percentage would get them a finals spot. If Werribee Districts turn up to McLean Reserve and play like they did last week, it is game over for the Woodsmen. Deer Park would even struggle to counter the Tigers last quarter efforts last week. They were inspiring. Districts can t afford to be a side that turns it on and off, they need momentum, and another win gets them up and about for a return bout with Hoppers Crossing. I think they will take the points. Spotswood then rely on Deer Park beating the Saints or their season is over. The Lions blew some cobwebs out last week and will be looking for a robust hit out before the finals. The Saints are more than capable of winning especially at home. I just can t see Deer Park losing. The Saints will give it everything but won t be quite good enough to sneak into the five Albion Wyndhamvale Albion s Todd Finco played in his 350th match at the weekend. Today the Cats will take on Altona. Picture: CODY BENCH 10 DIVISION ONE

13 LATE GOAL SEALS TOP SPOT FOR WARRIORS By CONNOR PAIN IN arguably one of the games of the season, Hoppers Crossing were able to kick a late goal to seal top spot in the Division 1 Reserves competition, with a nine-point win over secondplaced Werribee Districts. The matchup was tight all day, as neither side were able to kick away. The biggest lead at any break was the final margin. The midfield was where much of the game was played, as both sides counteracted the other with pressure, tackling and intercept marks. As such, neither team kicked more than two goals in a row over the course of the four quarters. Despite the close contest, Hoppers used tight defence and a goal with just over seven minutes remaining to stave off its opponent and win (76) to (67). Hoppers Crossing will now finish the season in first place on 60 points as it has the final bye of 2016, while Werribee will head to Spotswood to face the Woodsmen. Altona locked up third place with a come from behind win over Sunshine, 9.9. (63) to (61). The Kangaroos were the stronger team for the first three quarters, as they led at each break. Its 10-point lead going into the final term appeared to be enough, as the Roos had countered each Vikings goal, but the home side was unable to hold its advantage as Altona dominated, booting three goals and four behinds in the quarter to win its 12th game of the season. DIVISION 1 ROUND WRAP RESERVES Altona s final game of the season is at home against Albion, Sunshine travelling to Wyndhamvale. Eleven goals in the second half helped Spotswood romp to an (123) to 5.5. (35) victory over Albion,, the away side the better team all day. Luke Ryan led the way for the Woodsmen with four majors. The game was still competitive at half-time, but Spotswood s onslaught in the second half pushed the final margin to 88-points. Deer Park ran riot over Wyndhamvale on the way to its biggest win of the season, a (185) to 1.0. (6) thumping. The Falcons were, to say the least, uncompetitive all day as the Lions just piled on the misery, not letting up over any of the four quarters. Wyndhamvale s only score came in the third quarter, a quarter where Deer Park kicked eight goals and eight behinds. The Lions will finish no lower than fifth on the ladder and is set to battle St Albans on Saturday. 22 DIVISION 2 ROUND WRAP SENIORS EAGLES BOUNCE BACK IN EMPHATIC STYLE By DANIEL MOSCA WITH the Finals around the corner, the Yarraville Seddon Eagles cemented a top-two spot on the ladder with their 86-point win over the Manor Lakes Storm on Saturday. It was an impressive bounce back game from the Eagles, who were upset by Glen Orden a week earlier and risked dropping to third place by season s end with Caroline Springs hot on their tail. Instead, the Eagles guaranteed themselves a home final, setting the tone early against the Storm and outscoring the visitors in every quarter. Yarraville Seddon started off strong and never looked back, dominating Manor Lakes out of the middle and finishing the game with nine different goal scorers. They received strong contributions from Kevin Upton and Chris Topalidis, who led the team with six and four majors, respectively. Manor Lakes, meanwhile, were dealt a humbling blow by the Eagles after coming into the match with two straight wins for the first time this season, including an impressive 93-point blowout over West Footscray last week. Unfortunately for them, they failed to regain last week s momentum, suffering their 13th loss of the season and falling to 3-13 overall. The game played out much like the last one these two clubs played in Round 11, where the Eagles dominated possession and ran away 69-point victors over the storm. And just like the round 11 clash, the Eagles got the jump on the Storm early, booting four of the first five goals to take a 19-point lead into the first break. The home side picked up right where they left off in the DIVISION 2 SENIORS TEAM P W L D PTS % first quarter, rattling off another six goals in the second quarter to extended their lead to 36-points going into the main break, capped off by a sensational goal late in the half by Upton. Manor Lakes came out of the half-time break looking to make amends for their first half play. They earned themselves a number of hard ball gets and after goaling through forward, Jackson Lesko, they cut the lead to 30-points and looked primed to make it a contest. However, their brief surge would prove to be short lived as Yarraville Seddon took little time reasserting their dominance over the visitors, once again outclassing them in the centre and suffocating Manor Lakes with their forward pressure. They kicked 13 goals to six in the second half en route to another dominant performance over the Storm, beating them for the third straight time. The two teams met three times this season, with Yarraville Seddon winning all three games by an average of 86-points. In other results, North Footscray steamrolled Albanvale by 141-points on the back of 11 goals from forward, Tyren Montebruno. Elsewhere, Caroline Springs bounced back from their loss last week to rout Glen Orden by 121-points. 23 IN their last home game of the season, the Yarraville Seddon Eagles romped home to demolish Manor Lakes, in what was one of the biggest wins of the Western Region Football League season. The Eagles continued its impressive 2016 with a massive 261-point win over the Storm at Yarraville Oval. The Eagles kept the Storm scoreless for three quarters, with Manor Lakes only score coming in the final term when they kicked a behind. It was an emphatic performance, with Yarraville kicking 12 goals in the first quarter, 11 goals in the second, 11 goals in the third and finished the game with six goals in the last quarter. The home side had 14 different goal kickers for the match. Paul Azar and Jack Hargreaves both booted six goals each for the Eagles. While Andrew Willis, Lewis Grieves and Jack Lee kicked four goals each, James Nikolov, Aaron Disney, Michael Volpi kicked three each and Jason Cousins also kicked two. With the bye next week, Manor Lakes last game for the year was a disappointing one to say the least, as they experienced their worst loss this season and ending their season on the bottom of the ladder. Whilst Manor Lakes season has ended, the real challenges are just beginning for Yarraville Seddon as they prepare for the finals. In other results, North Footscray have also enjoyed a win in their last home game for the season. The Devils defeated Albanvale (157) to 2.3. (15). Brodie Oakford was the star up forward, kicking seven goals in the big win. Unfortunately for Glen Orden, their last home game resulted in a loss, as they went down to Caroline Springs. The win secures the Lakers position in second spot on the ladder. 32 DIVISION 3 ROUND WRAP SENIORS NEWPORT, PARKSIDE CEMENT TOP TWO FINISH By WILL ZWAR PARKSIDE has demolished Tarneit in Division 3, putting a huge gap between the top two and the rest of the competition. Winning by 80-points, the percentage booster sees the Magpies with the greatest percentage in the league (191.10%) and locks in a top two position with just one week remaining. Parkside had no mercy for the Titans, as they opened their account with six goals in the first quarter to lead 6.3. (39) to 1.2. (8) at the first break. Their dominance continued into the second term as the piled on four more goals, seeing them take a 50-point lead into half-time, with the game seemingly over. While the Titans managed to stem the flow of Parkside goals in the third term, they were not able to hit the scoreboard themselves, leaving them with a 64-point margin to overcome in the final term. However despite their dominance over the competition earlier on in the season, Tarneit looked tired late, with the Magpies kicking five goals to two in the final term. Parkside s Matthew Shepperbottom led all comers with four goals for the afternoon, while Martyn Beachem and Aaron Gauci kicked three of their own. Benjamin Ashman and Joseph Jamieson were amongst the best on ground. North Sunshine s final game of the 2016 season will be against Parkside at Dempster Park. 39 UMPIRES CORNER FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME By GRAEME HODGART BEHIND the goals last Sunday was a group of four young footballers watching the action in one of the WRFL junior finals games. Each of them proudly wore the colours of their own team. They, themselves, had played earlier in the day and from their enthusiasm and chatter it was hard to believe that their team had actually lost and been eliminated from the finals. As the siren sounded to end the quarter, each of them jumped the fence and instantly began a kick-to-kick session near the big sticks. They were passionate about their football and had said that they enjoyed winning but obviously it was not the end of the world for them. Kicking a football around with their mates was the most important thing that they were doing right then and there. The social aspect of football clubs, in fact, any club or association, is a very important part and often drives a club as it goes about fielding teams on match days. Often you hear stories about those great clubmen and women who spend a lot of their time doing a host of menial tasks, some large and some small, for the benefit of their club and its members. The annual WRFL Unsung Heroes Award is a fitting tribute to one individual each season, but there are many others throughout each of the WRFL clubs who work tirelessly in order for their own teams to get on the park. The umpires are the same. There are many tasks that certain individuals do continuously throughout the footy season within the umpiring fraternity. These may be at training, in the social rooms or during match day. Often these things are done behind the scenes without fanfare and often without accolades or thanks. Hopefully some people reading this might be inspired to say thank-you to the hard workers at their own club. And as the junior finals are completed and the senior ones are about to get underway, let s hope that everyone can enjoy the excitement and the atmosphere of good football. And when the pressure and the tension begin to rise just take a deep breath and remember those four young innocent kids kicking the football. They too play to win, but as we all know everyone can t be on the winning team. So, it s important to be able to calmly move on, pick up your own football and go have a social kick with your mates. LAWS OF THE GAME QUIZ #15 Last week s question: The ball goes out of bounds and the field umpire does not notice the boundary umpire s signal. The play continues and the field umpire awards a free kick to Player A before noticing the boundary umpire s signal. What happens next? The correct answer was (OPTION B). The field umpire directs Player A to take the free kick. (See Law 8.2.3) This week s question: In a junior WRFL match the ball goes through for a behind. The field umpire gives the all clear and the goal umpire signals a behind. Before the goal umpire has the chance to wave one flag, the defender kicks out from the goal square and the ball goes out of bounds without being touched. What happens next? (a) The boundary umpire signals out on the full and a forward receives a free kick from where the ball crossed the boundary line. (b) The goal umpire waves one flag and gets in position for the forward to kick towards the scoring area. (c) The field umpire brings the ball back for a kick out after the flag has been waved. Be sure to check out the correct answer in next week s WRFL Footy Record. 37 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

43 UNDER 19 S ROUND WRAP WERRIBEE TIGERS DOMINATE HOPPERS CROSSING By ASH BOLT WERRIBEE Districts have shown that they are the team to beat with a dominating 74-point win over third-placed Hoppers Crossing at Soldiers Reserve. Although known for their slow starts this season, the Tigers got off to a flyer with the first five goals of the game and led by 24-points at the first change. Werribee Districts fast ball movement gave them a lot of scoring chances but inaccurate kicking in the second quarter meant that they could only stretch the margin to 40-points at half-time. Not content with their lead, Werribee Districts came out firing again with two quick goals from Aaron Law to start the third term, but strong defence from Hoppers Crossing kept the margin to 46-points despite the Tigers dominance. The Tigers capped off the performance with another five goal burst to start the final term, including a great individual goal from Nicholas Buykx, and took home the 74-point win. Mading Atem and Nicholas Buykx were outstanding for Werribee Districts while Aaron Law kicked five goals. Lochlan McDonald was solid in the midfield for Hoppers Crossing while Jackson Fullerton was the Warriors only multiple goal scorer with two. Deer Park maintained their spot on top of the ladder with a 12-point win over fifth-placed Altona at John McLeod Reserve. Altona got off to a strong start with a four goal to two first quarter to lead by nine points at quarter time, but Deer Park were able to slowly drag back the margin until they trailed by just a single point at the final change. UNDER 19 DIVISION 1 TEAM P W L D PTS % Deer Park Werribee Districts Hoppers Crossing Yarraville Seddon Altona Spotswood A four goal to two final quarter gave the Lions the come from behind win and keeps them in top spot with just two rounds to go. Mark Galea was the star for Deer Park, kicking five goals in his first game back after spending two months with the seniors. Joel Menadue also kicked a bag, finishing with five goals for the Vikings. Yarraville Seddon effectively ended Spotswood s chances of a finals spot with a 13-point win at Yarraville Oval. In a game that was close all day, Yarraville Seddon took a slim lead in the first quarter and held onto it, but inaccuracy meant that they could only manage a narrow victory. Liam Murray finished with three goals for the Eagles while Mickey Nicholls starred for Spotswood with five of the team s eight goals. Round 18 will see Werribee Districts travel to McLean Reserve to meet Spotswood. Yarraville Seddon will host Deer Park at Yarraville Oval and Altona will play Hoppers Crossing at Grant Reserve. Deer Park scored a 12-point win over Altona at the weekend. Picture: SUPPLED UNDER 19 S DIVISION 1 41 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

50 UNDER 19 S ROUND WRAP ALBION TO SQUARE OFF WITH NEWPORT POWER By NICK GALEA NEWPORT Power have comprehensively dismantled Werribee Districts after a first half blitz to record as 85-point win at Langshaw Reserve. The final score was (120) to 5.5. (35), with the result sending out a warning to the competition. Newport got off to the perfect start as they kicked the first two goals of the game. Werribee responded through Matthew Golowka, but Khaled Hawli and Youssef El Hawli made sure the Power had a four goal buffer heading into quarter time, 5.4 (34) to 1.2 (8). Gun forward Youssef El Hawli had three goals to quarter time. In what was probably the most clinical quarter of the season, Newport went into another gear as they dominated the second term to kick a further six goals, two coming from Mitchell Taleb, to one as they displayed a ruthless attack on the under fire Werribee defence. The Power set up a 58-point lead at half-time. Werribee s intensity after the break was much better as they started to put pressure on Newport s backline, but they weren t able to get the reward for their early dominance. Despite this, Newport kicked another five consecutive goals to extend the margin to 82- points at the last break. With the sting out of the game, Lanz Doctor kicked two final quarter goals for Werribee and Newport s Khaled Hawli capped off a brilliant day with another major at the 17 minute mark. Khaled Hawli kicked six goals in a dominant best on ground display and took countless contested marks, Waled Abdou was strong down back and Youssef El Hawli kicked seven majors. For Werribee, Scott Woods could hold his head high, Lanz Doctor kicked two goals and Andrew Montalto tried all game. The other round result had Albion securing their UNDER 19 DIVISION 2 TEAM P W L D PTS % Albion Newport Power Werribee Districts Sanctuary Lakes Wyndhamvale th win of the season after a 16-point win over the Sanctuary Lakes Sharks (63) to 7.5.
