3 E.J WhiTTEN Round By Kirstie Fitzgerald One of the western suburbs greatest ever players, Ted EJ Whitten, graces the front cover of the WRFL Footy Record this week in celebration of the league s dedicated EJ Whitten Round. Born and bred in Melbourne s west, EJ played his junior football for the Braybrook Football Club in the then FDFL, before progressing up the ranks to play a total of 321 games for Footscray in the Victorian Football League. Earning the title Mr. Football, EJ s on field achievements are beyond every boyhood dream, appointed captain/coach of Footscray for 12 seasons, five time club Best and Fairest awards, three time All-Australian, 1954 premiership, Legend in the AFL Hall of Fame, Captain of the AFL Team of the Century and the list goes on and on. As part of the celebration this week, the WRFL will be awarding two EJ Whitten Medals to the best on ground players at each of our Division 1 and Division 2 Senior matches. At the conclusion of each match, the coach from each team will award the medal to their own best player on the field in a joint presentation. EJ Whitten Foundation CEO Ted Whitten Jnr will be in attendance at the WYN FM Match of the Day radio game between Wyndhamvale v Glen Orden to present the medals to the best on ground players for this match, while EJ Whitten Foundation representative, Michael Fitzgerald will be awarding the medals at the Division 1 match between Spotswood v Altona on the day as well. The WRFL is in its fourth year of the partnership with the EJ Whitten Foundation and has raised in excess of $30,000 for our community partner. Since its inception in 1995, the EJ Whitten Foundation has raised over $7.5million for prostate cancer research and men s health awareness. With 3,300 men dying from prostate cancer each year, the need to promote early detection has never been more relevant. For a look at how early detection save lives, be sure to read page 5 when we talk to former Footscray great Gordon Casey about his survival story. In Round 11 the WRFL also celebrates the valuable contribution of women in our great game in the AFL s Women s Round from June With the appointment of Peta Searle as St.Kilda s new development coach earlier this season, female involvement in our game has never been stronger, with a spike in participation rates across the country. The growth of female football in Australia has been extraordinary, with 169,000 females strapping on the boots across the nation in In the WRFL alone, there has been an increase in participation rate in players, as well as women off the field, with 16 club administrators, four league staff and board members as well as one club president in Tarniet s Sue Thornton leading the way. For a look at women s participation in the WRFL, be sure to check out page 3. Of course we have all your favourite match reports, best players, results and goal kickers, plus the latest news from the Umpire s corner (pg 33), WRFL Super Quiz (pg 32) and Images of the Week (pg 58-59). Until then, play well, kick straight and in the words of the great EJ Whitten, Stick it right up em. 5 Celebrating Women in FOOTball By Shannon Brien For St. Alban s Youth Girls player Madeline Keryk, the appointment of the AFL s first female coach Peta Searle to the St.Kilda Football Club is inspirational. I think Peta being appointed is only a sign of good things to come for women in football, she says. First picking up the football when she was in primary school, Madeline developed a passion for the game after participating in an Auskick program in grade prep. From there she followed her teammates into the junior competition, as she continues to play for today with the St.Albans Football Club. While the game can be unforgiving at times, Madeline loves football because it is a constant challenge and being part of a team and working together is a rewarding experience. I think the future of women s football is a very bright prospect, in recent years participation numbers particularly in the Youth Girls competition has sky rocketed, meaning there is a lot more talent coming through at the top end entering into the Victorian Women s Football League, she explains. With the introduction of the first National Women s Draft last season, the AFL has been a great supporter of providing opportunities for women to further their careers in football both on and off the field, with the AFL Women s Round held this weekend. Amanda Tessari of the Wyndhamvale Youth Girl s squad, was influenced to lace up the boots by her older brothers at a young age and has been playing football ever since. She loves the hardness of the game and how it can be free flowing. Amanda is also a keen observer, noting the way her favourite player, Joel Selwood always puts his head over the footy which she tries to implement into her own game each week. Not many people know women s football is actually the fastest growing segment of our game, which is great to hear, she says. However it s not only women on the field who are having a positive impact on the game, with a number of females taking on responsibilities in administration roles in the WRFL each year. Meredith Angwin, leads NAB s portfolio management and project delivery organization, has only been a part of the WRFL Board for six months but has enjoyed every minute of it. Following in the footsteps of her parents who are both life members of the WRFL, father Ron was President ( ) and mother Thelma was Treasurer ( ), it was her love of the game that brought her to assume the role of an Executive Member on the Board at the start of Football has a diverse fan base, she says. There are just as many women following the game as there are men which is fantastic. With the evolvement of women s participation in football growing from spectators to players, administration roles and even presidential roles in the WRFL, Meredith believes it s important for football to change in conjunction with the needs of society. I am used to bringing together different people in terms of changes through my work, she says. In football there is a constant level of change every year and I deal with how we are going to approach this. With the WRFL one of the fastest growing leagues in the state, it s great to see that the fastest growing segment of the game, women s football, is in safe hands. 7 ONE OF THE LUCKY ONES Gordon Casey s survival story Three-thousand three hundred of our dads, brothers, sons and friends will die from prostate cancer in Australia this year. Alarmingly, this averages out to almost nine men each day and while survival rates have increased in recent times, prostate cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers in men, with more than 20,000 new cases diagnosed this year. Yet one man who ensured he was not among these statistics is former Carlton and Footscray champion Gordon Casey. Originally recruited from the Gorya Football Club, Casey got his first taste of elite level football playing with the Carlton reserves as a forward, winning the leading goal-kicking award in 1967 and Playing just one match in the seniors, Casey was picked up by the Footscray Football Club as a back pocket player, where he played 125 matches in the red, white and blue. EJ was captain-coach at the time I moved to Footscray and it was he who gave me a second chance at my football career, something that I will never forget, Casey said. After finishing up with the Dogs at the end of the 1975 season, Casey spent time in the WAFL for the Swan Districts Football Club, before returning to Melbourne s western suburbs to play for Parkside in the then Footscray District Football League. I knew a few guys from Footscray who had links down at Parkside so I headed down there to have a run. Playing on the ball for the Magpies for the next five years, Casey was part of the 1981 grand final victory, before moving on to try his hand at coaching at Hoppers Crossing. I was approached by Hoppers Crossing to coach and was there for four years, assisting them to their first flag in While returning to the Western Bulldogs in a coaching capacity after his time at Hoppers Crossing, Casey was rocked by the news that his former coach and great friend Ted Whitten had passed away from prostate cancer. I couldn t believe the great man would no longer be with us, he said. EJ had been such a big part of my career, as well as his son Ted Whitten Jnr who I played a few games with and to see him pass away was devastating for many who knew him. Since EJ s passing, Casey made a promise to himself that he would get checked for prostate cancer regularly, in honour of his friend. After seeing EJ fade away with the disease, I made a pact with the Bulldogs club doctor to make sure I was tested regularly for prostate cancer. Staying true to his word, Casey ensured he was vigilant with his health and it was just as well he did, having been diagnosed with the disease at the age of 45. I was getting checked on a quarterly basis, when the doctors found out that I had prostate cancer, he said. After initial tests and screens doctors conducted on Casey, they also discovered that the football legend had also had Lymphoma cancer. Because of my regular screenings, they were able to find the prostate cancer in its early stages and treat me for it. While there is no cure yet for lymphoma cancer, I am still currently being treated for it every two months and they say that if I wasn t diligent with my health, I may not have survived. With men aged over 50 more likely to develop prostate cancer, Casey urges all men to be active about their health and get checked. When you re young, you think you are bullet proof and that stories such as mine won t happen to you, well let me tell you, it does and can happen to anyone of any age. I know many men are a little shy when it comes to going to the doctors, but at the end of the day you just have to make a promise to not only yourself, but to your family as well to go get checked up regularly for all health issues, not just cancer because you will be letting them down if anything were to happen to you which you could have prevented by being more diligent with your health in the first place. With the dedicated E.J Whitten Round played this weekend, there is no better time to take on Casey s advice and make a pact to get tested. There s nothing better than leaving the doctors with a clean bill of health, so do yourself a favour and book a health test today and you never know, it could just save your life. 11 If you had said in March of 2014, that Werribee Districts verses Deep Park would be Match of the Year, you might have been taken off to the Funny Farm as they used to say in the old days. Deer Park is still four or five players away from having their best team on the ground, which is pretty scary for everyone. Werribee Districts are talented but no longer unknown, which is both a good and bad thing. The last time these sides met it was a good contest till the last quarter, then Deer Park dominated. As I wrote last week, Districts story will be told in the next fortnight, they have ticked one box, two to go. This should be a good game. I hope it is. Everyone is waiting for Deer Park to have a hiccup, if it doesn t happen this week, it won t. Sunshine could make a mess of the top five and even fall in, if it ever gets its act together. I said they were gone, but now I am not so sure. If they beat Hoppers Crossing they still might play finals. Though I doubt it. The Port Melbourne Colts v Yarraville Seddon Eagles clash is not exactly Broadway material, but both clubs are very proud and desperate for a win. Should be worth watching. In the final game St. Albans play Albion. The Cats have won two in a row and their young group will be up and about to tackle the Saints. The Saints were well beaten by Deer Park but there is no shame in that. This time of the year is when we start to see some upsets and I expect a few this weekend. 12 Division One ReservES Report After a close round nine contest a fortnight ago, round 10 saw a number of big wins and percentage boosting margins. Nowhere was this more evident than at McLean Reserve as Spotswood kept in touch with the top five after they recorded a huge 117-point win over Port Melbourne Colts. The home side kicked eight goals to one in the opening half of the match, before piling on another 12 in the second half, while holding Port Melbourne scoreless in the final quarter. Spotswood coach Peter Lazarro would have been happy with the depth of his team s talent with goals spread across ten individual goal kickers, Jye Orchard and Dan Davis both top scoring with four. Despite the loss, Charlie Kat was one of the best for the Colts kicking two of his side s three goals. The to win lifts Spotswood to fifth spot on the ladder, while Port Melbourne sit in eighth on just the three wins. Around the grounds, all top four teams had significant wins to open up a two game gap between fourth and fifth spot. Looking ahead to Round 11 and the clash between rivals Altona and Spotswood looks to be the pick of the five games. Elsewhere, Albion faces the daunting task of travelling to play St.Albans, Port Colts host fellow strugglers Yarraville Seddon Eagles, while Sunshine will look to keep pace with the top two against Hoppers Crossing. Finally, Werribee Districts will be hoping for a win and a St.Albans slip up when they take on Deer Park. By Declan Boffa Follow Declan on Werribee Districts remain in second after they earned their eighth win in a row, thumping Hoppers Crossing by 70-points. The Warriors could only manage just one goal for the entire game as the Tigers kicked five goals to none in the final term to run out to victores. Andrew Taylor, Johnathan Hevern and Samuel Malual all kicked two goals for the visitors, while Josh Doyle was named the best for Hoppers Crossing in what was a disappointing day for his side. St. Albans remain on top of the ladder after they defeated Deer Park by 32-points on Sunday afternoon. Kirk Wintels kicked another four goals for the Saints helping his side to a to win. Deer Park now drops to sixth spot having lost their past three games. Other top four winners were Sunshine who defeated Yarraville Seddon by 57-points and Altona who kept Albion winless, defeating the Cats by 44-points. 23 TIV BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING Although most Division Two eyes were on the top of the table clash at Parkside, the game of the round was at Pennell Reserve as the Sanctuary Lakes mosquito fleet secured a terrific upset victory over Braybrook. It was a deserved win for the Sharks who looked the better side all day despite trailing at three quarter time after the Brookers made the most of the scoring end. Despite giving away height and weight, the Sharks were fanatical in their pressure and ran over the top of Braybrook late. Sanctuary Lakes turned the old saying about quick players slowing down as the game goes on but tall players not getting any shorter, on its head. Sharks captain Christopher Debono was simply outstanding, he may not be the quickest or most skilled but his grunt around the stoppages was vital. Despite going off with a leg injury in the final term he was the deserved best on ground. Other terrific contributors for the visitors were Bryce McCartney, who was damaging with ball in hand and his pure speed was a highlight while goal sneak Matt Davis proved he has more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Despite the result, Braybrook s big man Matthew Charenko battled all day in a losing side. It was a win that throws open the race for early Division Three favouritism. Braybrook, Albanvale and Sanctuary Lakes all have legitimate claims to wearing the crown as the divisions split in just under a month s time. Around the grounds - Parkside began to break the top four with a big win over the Roosters, the 53-point margin was a surprise for most who tipped a close encounter. Magpies skipper Chris Muratore was tremendous in the victory. Glen Orden also won a fiery affair over Caroline Springs as the top four moves further ahead of the chasing pack. Manor Lakes managed to secure a big win over an improving Devil s side. It was a vital four points for the Storm who had slipped in recent times and in danger of falling into Division Three. Albanvale s Justin Brook continued his great season, as the Cobras secured some important percentage in their 104-point thrashing of North Sunshine. Wyndhamvale also enjoyed a percentage booster with a 15-goal away win over Sunshine Heights. Finally, Laverton are making a late charge for DIVISION TWO seniors REPORT Division Three finals with an important 60-point win over Tarneit on the back of five goals to crafty forward Steven Paone. It s another huge week of fixtures in round 11 as two of the top sides again do battle as we try to decipher the competition favourites. This time it s Wyndhamvale and Glen Orden who play, as the Falcons run and skill is matched against the Hawks hardness and grit. Albanvale host a rejuvenated Manor Lakes and although the Storm will start as favourites, the Cobras will fancy their chances against another mid-ranked side. After a few encounters against highly ranked sides, Caroline Springs take on a Braybrook side stung after their disappointing loss. Although Laverton have managed to secure a few wins in recent weeks, they face an even bigger mountain against Sunshine Heights who have a proven ability to play the kind of footy to mix it with anyone. If North Footscray thought Manor Lakes were tough, things step up a gear this week as they host Parkside who continue to snap at the heels of Glen Orden on top of the ladder. Finally, both Sanctuary Lakes and West Footscray must guard against complacency but should be comfortable victors as they host North Sunshine and Tarneit respectively. 24 DIVISION TWO ReservES Report The statistics promised the tightest fixture of the season and the games didn t disappoint. A table topping clash lived up to the billing and two midtable teams battled it out for four quarters, yet the most enthralling encounter of round 10 took place between two of the competition s minnows. Dempster Park was treated to a buzzer beater, as North Sunshine stole victory with a goal on the final siren to sink Albanvale. The Cobras established a 13-point lead midway through the final term when the game was deadlocked at the last change. However, the roadrunners slammed three goals in the final four minutes to register a remarkable win. The comeback was engineered from the midfield where Hung Phan, Brent White and Mathew Saada won the vital centre clearances and worked tirelessly around the ground all day. North Sunshine playingcoach Jeremy Hibbert kicked four goals at timely stages of the game when it looked as if Albanvale would kick clear. At the other end of the field, Paul Adams kicked three majors for the Cobras with playing-coach Jason Karim leading from the front all day. The efforts of Athol Jetta, Aaron Graham and David Mundy would have been enough for the Cobras if not for the last kick of the game. It s a heartbreaking defeat for Albanvale, who continue their season winless, but it s a sensational win for North Sunshine, who came from behind for the second time this season to break an extensive losing streak at home. Parkside found themselves in an unfamiliar position when they trailed West Footscray by three goals at quarter time at Henry Turner. The Roosters were fighting hard for a top spot berth in a game which saw both teams challenged for the first time this season. The contest was ferocious, the skills the best you will see in reserves football and the willingness to fight was unrelenting. If this was the prelude to the grand final at the end of the year, I can guarantee we will be treated to a beauty. However, on this occasion it was Parkside that celebrated with a grinding 14-point win. Glen Orden could have been on the verge of a great comeback when they trailed Caroline Springs by 26-points ahead at the final change at Heathdale Oval. Caroline Springs were brilliant all day and almost let it slip before finding their resolve and clinching consecutive wins for the second time this season, with a ten-point victory. Elsewhere, the remaining results from round ten were all separated by an average of 30-points, with TIV BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING the biggest deficit coming at Pennell Reserves with Sanctuary Lakes 67-point victory over Braybrook. In a round which saw a lot of great football played from all ends of the spectrum, the biggest winner this week in my opinion was the competition itself. By Andy J Mead Follow Andrew on Nth Sunshine recorded their 2nd win for the season, with the Reserves sneaking home to beat Albanvale by 5 points. 35 UmpiRES CORNER By Graeme Hodgart History shows us that football has traditionally been a male dominated sport. Even today, the weight of numbers still favour the gentlemen, however this number is not as strong as it used to be with more females getting involved in our great game in all capacities. As the number of female players increase, so too does the percentage of women who are filling the important positions of responsibility within our many local football clubs. With the recent appointment of St.Kilda s new development coach Peta Searle earlier this year, female involvement has never reached greater heights. Like Searle, the WRFL local umpiring world has also had some pioneering women of its own. Firstly there was the long- serving Joan Saville who acted as treasurer of the umpires association for over two decades. Of course, the late Joan was wife to well-known Graham Saville who created a record by waving flags in 15 consecutive FDFL grand finals from 1966 to 1980 as well as the mother of Paul who made it to the top level as a field umpire and umpired 21 AFL games before returning to the local scene as umpires adviser for several years. Another woman leading the way on the field for females in the west is Joy Cox who was a goalie for fifteen years, waving the flags in numerous A1 (Division One) games but was preceded by another aspiring female umpire in Jo McGarity by a few years. Jo, wife of current WRFL umpire Terry McGarity, used her running ability to patrol the boundary in senior games, leading the way for many female boundary umpires who pick up the whistle today. Even in 2014, females are a large part of the WRFL umpiring team. Maree Wilke has the important roles of administration assistant, female liaison officer and also being the assistant boundary coach. This involves observing boundary umpires and giving them feedback on their performances on match day. Former junior field umpire Anthea Walshe also assists with the boundary, currently working with the young umpires as the junior boundary coach. Currently, the WRFL can boast 25 female umpires across all three disciplines. Celebrating AFL Women s Round: One of the many female umpires doing a great job on the field during the season. Photo: Kirstie Fitzgerald On the field are Eve Pettigrove, Sydney Bruhn, Amanda Tessari (who also runs as a boundary umpire), Ebony Stevens, Scarlett Saxon-Jones and Monique Ristoski. Running the boundary are Shannessy Adams, Tamara Auld, Razaz Gladious, Megan Jennings, Emily Kennedy, Victoria Lobos Caneleo, Donna McDowall, Danielle McDowell, Megan McMahon, Bianca Michetti, Rosie Michetti, Brodie Stevens and Manu-Marika Tutu, while in the goals are Zoe Harrison, Christine Gent, Samantha Hill, Emily Brockdorff, Violet Cumming-Gray, Sham Teklu and Isabel Lobos-Caneleo. It s fantastic to see the increased female participation not only as players in our great game, but also in the umpiring ranks too. Congratulations to all women who don the whites each week on this AFL Women s Round weekend, and let us hope that the numbers of females involved in local umpiring continues to grow and develop in the years ahead. 39 Home of the WRFL Finals Division One U18 REPORT By Lavan Ruban Altona have edged closer to the top four with a solid 45-point victory over Albion. The Vikings exhibited arguably their most consistent performance of 2014, restricting Albion s scoreboard output while building upon their own previous quarter s efforts. Nine members of Altona s squad combined to kick ten goals for the day, Jesse Zammit the only multiple goal scorer in the (71) to 3.8 (26) victory. Altona s Heath Rafferty was best on ground, while Adrian Sachau was Albion s best. While Altona are still two wins from securing fourth place, Deer Park s loss to Spotswood has brought them a step closer. Jumping out of the blocks early, Spotswood had racked up 14 scoring shots to the Lions four at half time before finishing the day on a high kicking 19 goals in the 91-point victory. Spotswood ruckman Mark Nicholls was among the players who reigned supreme in the forward fifty kicking four, while 11 other individual goal kickers chimed in on the day in the percentage boosting win. Deer Park s captain Sohrob Ismail lead the way booting three of his team s five goals, and deemed the Lions best for the second week running. With the win, and Hoppers Crossing s loss, the Woodsmen are now only one win and percentage away from finishing in second place. At Hogans Road, it was first versus second as Hoppers Crossing battled it out against Werribee Districts in a match for neighbourhood bragging rights. As many spectators predicted, the match was tight from the opening siren with the lead switching at each interval, before Werribee Districts prevailed by 16-points. The final margin didn t do justice to the level pegging of the game, but it is a credit to the Tigers ability to play quality football over four quarters which will no doubt help them come September. For the victors, Yossef Afif kicked three goals while competition leading goal kicker Kurt Mayne kicked two. The Tigers Connor Yeoell was named the best afield, while Hoppers Mitch Post dominated for the second consecutive week. The final score was (76) defeated 8.12 (60). Albion face Yarraville-Seddon this weekend, in a game where both sides will be keen to chalk up a win with just one win between the pair heading into Round 11. Altona return home ahead of their clash with a confident Spotswood outfit, who have impressed thus far this season. Deer Park has another challenge ahead of them for the third week straight, this time against ladder leaders Werribee Districts. Finally, Hoppers Crossing will have an extra week to devise their next assault, heading into the bye this weekend. 46 Division TWO U18 REPORT By Kirstie Fitzgerald Home of the WRFL Finals Hoppers Crossing have escaped the jaws of a Sanctuary Lakes whitewash last Saturday in a close 16-point win at Hogans Road. In a low scoring affair, the Warriors had their noses in front at the first change by one straight kick, before the Sharks clawed their way back into the match in the second term to go into the main break one point leaders. Sitting in fourth place, the Warriors weren t keen on slipping down the ladder anytime soon as Brandon Christopoulos and Yousef Mesto stepped up to producematch winning performances, while teammate Ben Arabit made sure his time in the forward line wasn t wasted, kicking two for the day. Despite a last term surge from the young Sharks, accuracy in front of goal was a telling factor, eventually going down 9.9 (63) to 6.11 (47). Chalking up a two wins in the last month, the Sharks have found some form this season and are breathing down the necks of Caroline Springs who sit just one win ahead of them in fifth place. Around the grounds, Newport Power flexed their muscles on West Footscray/Sunshine, finishing the day with an outstanding 48 scoring shots to three. Leading goal kicker Yousef El Hawli couldn t be held down in the forward line booting seven majors for the day, and in doing so chalking up his 50th goal for the season. Matthew Chatterton and Shaun Kostizen tried hard all day for the hybrid squad, but it was simply not enough, the final score (193) to 1.2 (8). Down the freeway, Werribee Districts campaign to regain top spot on the ladder continued with a 113-point drubbing over Caroline Springs, while Wyndhamvale demonstrated their authority on the competition with a 73-point win over Manor Lakes. This Saturday morning will see the top four take on the bottom four, as Newport travel to Town Centre Oval to play Caroline Springs while Werribee Districts will host Manor Lakes. Sanctuary Lakes will have their work cut out for them when they host the third placed Falcons, while West Footscray/Sunshine will face a Hoppers Crossing outfit ready to get back on the winners board. ladder: Under 18 P W L D % PTS NEWPORT POWER WERRIBEE DISTRICTS WYNDHAMVALE HOPPERS CROSSING CAROLINE SPRINGS SANCTUARY LAKES MANOR LAKES WEST FOOTSCRAY/SUNSHINE Congratulations to Newport Power player Yousef El Hawli who reached his 50th Goal Milestone for the season in last week s match against West Footscray/Sunshine DIVISION TWO U18
