3 HOW THE WEST WAS WON By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS IT has been a big few weeks at WRFL HQ, with the league hosting Ballarat as part of the revamped Community Championships. All that hard work and preparation was on show on Saturday, when we went head-to-head with one of the strongest country leagues in the state, Ballarat. It was good to see a great crowd come along to the Under-19 and Seniors matches and show their support for our league. It was also great to see a contingent of Ballarat supporters also make the trip. The day started with the Under-19 s match. Some of the best WRFL young guns displayed their talents. They romped it home to win by 95-points. Matt Dean and his coaching panel did a fantastic job with the squad. They worked as a team and played the game in the right spirit. The seniors match was a different story. The game was a much tighter affair, both teams had the chance to run away with the game, but in the end, the WRFL managed to hold on to win by three points, in what was a thrilling contest. Andrew Panayi won a free kick in the dying stages of the match and duly converted to win the game for the WRFL. CONTENTS Interleague Seniors...3 Interleague Under-19 s...4 Interleague Ranking and Images...5 Division 1 Senior/Reserves Player Profile Division 2 Senior/Reserves KICKIN IT WITH KRISTEN Editorial Issue 8, May 28th 2016 Coach Anthony Eames, showed great leadership since he was appointed as coach and was the perfect person to lead the WRFL back onto the winner s list. The WRFL has now restored its reputation as one of the strongest leagues in the state. I want to thank everyone who was involved on the day, the clubs, volunteers, coaches, officials, AFL Victoria, my colleagues and of course the players who showed great pride and commitment throughout the build-up to the match. Without your support, the day wouldn t have been a success. Overall it was a fantastic day for the league and one of the best experiences I have been a part of. The WRFL has now set up a date with the Northern Football League next year. I am already looking forward to being a part of that campaign. Stories and pictures from the Community Championships can be found on pages 3, 4 and 5. In other news, this weekend is also a special one, it is Indigenous Round. Each AFL club will wear themed jumpers as part of the Round. In our league, the Manor Lakes Football Club will be wearing a specially designed guernsey that pays respect to Indigenous athletes from across the country. It is a great initiative by the club to get involved in Indigenous Round. Some of the best players in our great game are Indigenous, so it is important we honour them with their own dedicated round. See you at the footy. 5 INTERLEAGUE WRAP UNDER 19 BRIGHT FUTURE FOR WRFL S UNDER-19 STARS By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS THE future of the WRFL is looking as bright as ever after the Under-19 representative team dismantled Ballarat at Whitten Oval on Saturday. The talented team defeated Ballarat by 95-points in what was an impressive performance from all players. Coach Matt Dean said there was some exciting talent in the WRFL. He said the Community Championship match provided players with a chance to make a name for themselves and potentially open a few doors for them in the future. I know the Bulldogs had people at the game and Ash Hansen from the VFL team was also there taking a few names down, Dean said. Nick Ryan is on a VFL list, but there is a few players now who could be invited to pre-season training. These people will now keep an eye on these WRFL players, so it is a real door opener for these players. This Community Championship model is a great concept. The WRFL were fired-up from the first bounce, booting a massive 10-goals in the first quarter. Wyndhamvale star Liam Scarborough kicked three goals in the first term and continued to put pressure on defenders the moment the ball came inside forward 50. It was a good coin toss to win, because it was a four to five goal wind, Dean said. We had quick ball movement to our forward runners and that was what I had asked of them before the game, so they played perfectly. I also asked them to have a defensive mindset when they didn t have the ball, they went man-on-man and that worked as well. The relentless pressure and attack from the talented team proved too much for their opponents, with Ballarat s first goal coming in the early stages of the second quarter. Ballarat swayed a little momentum back after a Brody Sullivan goal, but the last three goals of the quarter went to the WRFL. We were able to outscore them in the second quarter and those last few goals in the quarter really broke their back, Dean said. The WRFL continued to dominate the second-half, kicking eight goals to four. Man of the match honours went to Galea. He is just a class act, Dean said. He goes in and under and wins the ball and he also gets it on the outside. He finished with four goals, but there was about five or six players that could have had that best on ground medal hanging around their necks, it was a great team effort. Dean said overall he enjoyed the experience of being coach and says there were plenty pf players in the team already showing an interest in pulling on the WRFL jumper next year. You are bringing together players from all across the league, some of them haven t played together before and didn t even know each other, so to see them come together and bond was great, he said. 6 INTERLEAGUE WRAP SENIORS WRFL SCORE THRILLING THREE POINT WIN By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS THE WRFL is back. After last year s disappointing loss at the hands of the Eastern Football League, the WRFL knew it had to make a statement in this year s WorkSafe Community Championships and that s exactly what they did on Saturday. In a highly pressured and entertaining match with Ballarat at Whitten Oval, the WRFL scored a thrilling three-point win, with the winning goal coming in the final two minutes of play. Andrew Panayi from the Werribee Districts, was the hero. The talented forward won a free kick 30m out directly in-front in the dying stages of the match and calmly slotted it through, giving the WRFL the lead. The lead changed hands for most of the second-half, however it was the home side who kicked truly in the final quarter to win the match. Coach Anthony Eames said he couldn t be more prouder of the WRFL. We were in-front for most of the day, he said. We didn t use the ball on the outside well and we could have closed the game down a lot earlier, but as group we will learn from that. The game was played in the right spirit and in the end we were good enough to win. The WRFL had nine scoring shots to three in the first quarter and led by just 16-points at the first break. I thought we could have been four or five up at the end of the first quarter, Eames said. We had the ball inside 50, but we just couldn t finish well. Our pressure was good in the second-half and I thought our defence held up well across the day. They combined as a team really well and was able to run the ball out fairly well. Ballarat had the momentum in the third quarter, with goals coming from Nathan Pring, Mathew Notman and Daniel Tung. In the third quarter we probably didn t use the ball well enough in the corridor, we turned it over a bit, Eames said. It was disappointing to go into the last quarter a point down. It was a match that could of gone either way, but I put it on the boys and they were able to find something. It was a battle and we were lucky enough to hold on. WRFL best on ground honours went to Werribee District star Matt Dean. Eames said the former Barry Priest medallist showed a lot of poise throughout the afternoon. His presence and calmness around the ground was telling, he had a great four quarter performance. But, he was just one of many who contributed, Brayden Ferrari, Tim Quick, Murray Boyd and Jase Perkins presented all day, they were all consistent. The WRFL is now sixth on the AFL Victoria Community Championships rankings and has set up a date with the Northern Football League next year. 20 DIVISION 2 ROUND WRAP NORTH FOOTSCRAY GET THE JUMP ON EAGLES By DANIEL MOSCA The Yarraville Seddon Eagles suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday at the hands of an impressive North Footscray outfit to the tune of 41-points. It was a stellar performance by the visiting team who got the jump on the Eagles early with strong play out of the centre and accurate kicking in front of goal. The Eagles, second on the ladder coming into the game, failed to match North Footscray s class in the first quarter and were forced to play catch up the rest of the way. North Footscray received strong contributions from forward Zak Atkins and midfielder Brayden Montebruno, who led the team with three and two majors, respectively. Despite a disappointing first quarter by Yarraville Seddon, they managed to weather the storm early in the second by dominating the clearances and contested possession around the ground. However, they failed to cut into the margin due their inability to hit targets inside 50 and by squandering multiple opportunities in front of goal, to boot. Regardless, they finished the half with a flurry of late goals, including a sensational running belter on the tightest of angles by Macauley Goring, and trailed by just 11 points at the main break. North Footscray took no time regaining momentum at the start of the second-half, they dictated the tempo and sliced through the Eagles pressure with an aggressive attack and precise kicking. DIVISION 2 SENIORS TEAM P W L D PTS % Caroline Springs North Footscray Yarraville Seddon Eagles Glenorden Albanvale The visitors took advantage of the bye last week and steamrolled Yarraville Seddon in the second half, booting six goals to one in the third quarter and never looked back. The Eagles, meanwhile, will have to go back to the drawing board as they were thoroughly outplayed by the visitors through most of the game and failed to capitalise on a number of chances when they went forward. North Footscray, whose only loss so far this season coming against league leaders Caroline Springs, finished with 10 different goal kickers and moved up to second place on the ladder with the win while Yarraville Seddon dropped to third. The Eagles will get a chance to redeem themselves next week as they take on the lowly West Footscray while North Footscray are set to face fourth placed Glenorden. In other matches, first placed Caroline Springs demoralised Manor Lakes by 222-points and were boosted by a walloping 15 goals from forward, Mathew Sutton. Elsewhere, Albanvale overcame a slow start to beat last placed West Footscray. The Cobras, despite trailing by 9 points at the half, dominated the home team in the second-half and cruised to a 53 point win. 21 DIVISION 2 ROUND WRAP EAGLES EDGE OUT DEVILS AT YARRAVILLE OVAL THE Yarraville Seddon s unbeaten roll continued at the weekend, with the Eagles defeating North Footscray in an entertaining Round 7 match. The Eagles had most of the play in the opening quarter and led by eight points at the first break. In a tight second quarter, the visitors managed to turn the tables, kicking three goals to one, to lead by four points at half-time. After the break, the Eagles had a more attacking mindset and was able to pull away from the Devils, booting four goals to just two behinds. At the final break, they led by a game-high 20 points. It was a different story in the last quarter, as the Devils, who also hadn t lost a match heading into the clash, mounted a fight back. The Devils kicked three straight goals and kept Yarraville goalless, but it wasn t enough to bridge the gap, with the Eagles holding on to score its fifth straight win of the season. Jack Lee and Michael Volpi kicked two goals each for Yarraville, while Kane Williams booted four for North Footscray. Meanwhile, Caroline Springs moved into first place on the ladder with a big win over Manor Lakes. The final score was 0.4 (4) to (187). The Lakers had 13 different goal kickers, including Aaron King who booted six goals. It wasn t just their attack that was a standout on the day, it was their defensive pressure. The Lakers kept Manor Lakes scoreless in the second-half. In the final match of the round, West Footscray hosted Albanvale. For the first time this season, the Roosters went into the first quarter break ahead. The Cobras kicked into gear in the second quarter, kicking four goals, to lead by 16-points at half-time. It was more of the same in the third term to 29-points, but the game wasn t over. The Roosters fought back in the final quarter, kicking four goals to one. But, with time running out and the margin to big, the home side fell agonisingly close to scoring its first win of the season. The final score was Albanvale 8.9 (57) to West Footscray 6.8 (44). This weekend will see Manor Lakes host Albanvale at Howqua Reserve. The last time these two teams met, the Cobras won by 77-points. Glen Orden will make their way to Hansen Reserve, to take on North Footscray. The Devils will go into the match as favourites, however Glen Orden will be fresh from the bye. In the final match of the round, West Footscray will take on the Yarraville Seddon Eagles. 30 DIVISION 3 ROUND WRAP SENIORS BOMBERS HAVE IMPRESSIVE WIN AGAINST MAGPIES By WILL ZWAR BRAYBROOK doubled their wins tally for 2016 in round seven, as they edged out Laverton in a tight contest at Pennell Reserve. Jamie Lane was on fire for the Brookers with his eight goals, while Manuel Reardon, who also starred in the win against North Sunshine, was best afield. Meanwhile, Dejan Samoukovic, Wade Kirkwood, Patrick Hynes and spearhead Jamie Bubleinik kicked two goals apiece. It was the inaccuracy of the Magpies that cost them dearly as they had three more scoring shots in the 12-point loss. Earlier, Laverton jumped out of the blocks with a four goal to one first term, which saw them lead by 18-points at quarter time. But, Braybrook bounced back with seven majors in the second term to lead by 20-points at half-time. Laverton, would not be denied their first win with such ease, as they turned up the heat again in the third Braybrook score its second win of the 2016 season after defeating Laverton. An intense final quarter however saw Braybrook finish stronger, as they piled on seven goals for the quarter to finish 12-points up at the final siren. In round sevens other games, Newport Power registered their fifth win of the year as they came from behind to beat Sunshine Heights but just four-points in a heart stopper at home. Meanwhile, Parkside leapfrogged the Dragons to find themselves in third position on the ladder, after defeating Sanctuary Lakes Sharks by 58-points, as the Sharks dropped out of the top four. Finally, Tarneit continued on their merry way through 2016 as they sentenced Wyndham Suns to a 105-point thumping, as they built on their percentage. This weekend, Tarneit will host a genuine challenger in Parkside, and will not be able to let their guard down despite their dominance. Wyndham will have the chance to rebound from a disappointing weekend as they host Braybrook, who will be searching for their third win of the season. Newport Power will be looking for a sixth win against Laverton, and continue to keep the pressure on the Titans as they remain hot on their tail in second place. Finally the Sharks will attempt to regain a place in the top four, but will have to get past the Roadrunners. Sunshine Heights will look to regroup for round nine, as they have the bye this weekend DIVISION THREE

31 PARKSIDE bounced back from its first defeat last week, with a 120-point demolition win over Sanctuary Lakes on Saturday. The Magpies were left stunned after suffering a loss to the Wyndham Suns a week earlier, but managed to quickly move on with a percentage boosting win against the Sharks. Parkside extended its lead at every break, kicking four goals in the opening quarter, followed by five goals in the second term, six goals in the third quarter and then seven goals in the final term. Ryan Keenan led the way with five goals. He was followed by Trent Witton and Matt Radziejewski who booted four goals each for the Magpies, while David Orchard was the other multiple goal scorer with three majors. Parkside will next take on ladder-leaders Tarneit at Wootten Road Reserve, while Sanctuary Lakes will be aiming to get its season back on track when it takes on North Sunshine. Meanwhile, the Titans continued its winning ways against the Wyndham Suns. After a close first quarter, the Titans dug deep in the second-half to record its sixth straight win of the 2016 season, winning by 32 points. Tarneit kicked nine goals to the Wyndham Suns three in the second-half. Samuel Ingham kicked four goals for the home side, while Troy Whiting booted three of his own. Whiting now brings his goal kicking tally to 21 for the season. Christopher Neville was the Wyndham Suns best goal kicker with three goals next to his name. The Suns will next host Braybrook. The Brookers remain the only team in the competition to have not won a game this season. Braybrook lost to Laverton at Pennell Reserve by 41-points. The home side led by a 16-points at half-time, but in a dominant display, Laverton was able to apply pressure to the opposition at all times, controlling the match. Justin Fulford was the main target up forward for Laverton. He kicked four goals. Mason Ahumada also impressed, kicking three goals of his own. 38 UMPIRES CORNER UMPIRE TRAINING IS KEY TO PERFORMANCE By GRAEME HODGART How exactly do the WRFL umpires train? It s a fairly good question. Many of the umpires train twice a week as a group although the really dedicated ones do extra work outside the usual training times like running, going to the gym, swimming or exercising. For the field and boundary umpires there is a lot of running out on the track. This can be quite monotonous and so it is varied by incorporating both short and longer distances. Of course, warming up and stretching are also included. At the end there is more stretching. In between, it s mostly running although skills are often promoted through various activities where umpires have to make position, give a decision and then sprint off. Believe it or not, the WRFL goal umpires also do their share of training. And, no, it s not just standing erect and doing finger exercises! Walking begins the hour session. That s followed by jogging two laps of the soccer field, a short walk and then various stretching. Then there is some more running and then it s into groups to do the skill side of things. Positioning and decision-making using the goal posts at Scovell are usually on the agenda. Flag waving and giving signals are also included. At the end there is more stretching and finally cooling down. Unfortunately the other night at MacKillop the weather turned nasty and the umpires had to go indoors onto the basketball court. After some introductory running and stretching, various activities were conducted in small groups. It was intense and the perspiration really began to show. To finish the session off the umpires were divided into two groups and a game of European handball was played. It was a lively activity with teamwork a highlight. Some great skill work was on display. It was very inclusive with everyone getting plenty of touches and lots of goal scoring. The game flowed smoothly and it was interesting to note that there were no umpires! Occasionally there was a slight breech of the rules, but there was no-one to complain to or appeal to. And so the game just continued. I wonder how would our WRFL games would go without any umpires? LAWS OF THE GAME QUIZ 8 Last week s question: Player A is heavily bumped in the side of the body as he kicks the ball and it slews off the side of his boot and bounces on the boundary line on the full with the majority of the ball being over the boundary line. What happens next? The correct answer was (OPTION C) The boundary umpire signals for a throw in. (See Law 1.1). This week s question: The ball is kicked into the forward pocket and the siren is heard by the controlling field umpire. It just so happened that Player A on the attacking team grabbed a clear mark before the field umpire could signal the end to the quarter. What happens next? (a) The field umpire signals the end of play, awards the mark and lines Player A up for a shot on goal. (b) The field umpire signals the end of play. (c) The field umpire checks with the other umpire to see whether the shot on goal is the correct decision. Be sure to check out the correct answer in next week s WRFL Footy Record. 36

49 NEWPORT SNATCH VICTORY FROM WERRIBEE By NICK GALEA Power have snatched victory over Werribee Districts in an enthralling contest at Langshaw Reserve to remain top of the Under-19 Division Two ladder and maintain their unbeaten start to the 2016 season. Werribee Districts dominated the first quarter having settled quickly as their tall forwards created headaches for Newport s defence. The ball remained in Werribee s forward 50 for majority of the quarter and the 15-point margin at the first change could ve been greater if it wasn t for some tight defence from Newport. Scott Woods was everywhere, kicking two goals in what was a dominant start. Werribee s dominance continued in the early parts of the second quarter without reward and Newport made them pay as they started to get back into the game by winning the clearances. A highlight of the term was a great passage of team play starting from Rabih Dannaoui who passed to Alex Turcinovich and subsequently speared a pass to Youssef El Hawli to give him his second of the quarter. Werribee led by just four points at the long break. The game remained a tight tussle as both sides went goal for goal in the third each kicking three. A tense last quarter unfolded with Werribee getting out to a two goal lead before consecutive goals to Newport s Nizar Haddara and Youssef El Hawli levelled the scores at 62 apiece. UNDER 19 S ROUND WRAP DIVISION 2 Scott Woods regained the lead after a genuine crumbing goal only for Youssef El Hawli to snap truly from 15 under heavy congestion to win the game by a point. It was a fine spectacle of Aussie Rules. Newport s Youssef El Hawli was brilliant with five goals, Nazir and Jehad Haddara were strong contributors, with the former bagging two crucial goals. For Werribee Districts, Scott Woods kicked four goals, Blake Taylor was full of silk and kicked two goals whilst Harley Kilby was fierce at the contest. The other game had Albion as victors in their match against Sanctuary Lakes to After a close first quarter, the Cats put the foot down slamming nine consecutive goals to lead by 67-points at half-time. Albion s Liam White was best on ground, Koby Wilson-Roach slotted seven goals and James Leach kicked another bag of five. Rinor Zuzaku and Liam Banks stood up for Sanctuary Lakes with Mitchel Grima and Marvin Seevers the goal scorers. Round 8 has Newport Power host Albion in a top of the table clash and Wyndhamvale come up against Sanctuary Lakes. Werribee Districts have the bye.
