Sanderson Way, FB "Venezuela's Botanicals and Angel Falls" Karen Angel, a resident of Eureka, will be the featured speaker for the November meeting of the Noyo Chapter. Prior to moving to Humboldt County in 1978, Karen was the Executive Director of the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges. In 1979, s h e c o - f o u n d e d Ve c t o r Rehabilitation in Eureka and served as its Executive Director until 1995 when she moved to Papua New Guinea. Upon returning to Humboldt County, she worked as Executive Director Karen Angel on the rocky, wet scramble to Yuruán Falls, Canaima National Park, State of Bolívar, Venezuela, 29 June of the Humboldt Botanical Gardens Foundation from 1998 to Karen is the President of the Board of Directors of the Jimmie Angel Historical Project. She is the niece of Jimmie Angel ( ), a legendary American aviator-explorer for w h o m t h e w o r l d s t a l l e s t Angel Falls Salto Angel Churún Vena, planet Earth s tallest waterfall. 2 waterfall, Angel Falls in Venezuela, is named. Karen has been a guest researcher at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and the American P h i l o s o p h i c a l S o c i e t y i n Philadelphia, has published numerous articles about Jimmie Angel and has made public presentations in the U.S.A. and internationally about him and his era of aviation and exploration. K a r e n s t a l k i s t i t l e d Venezuela s Botanicals and Angel Falls with many of the photographs taken by members of the 2012 Tribute to Jimmie Angel expedition to Angel Falls. Although rhododendrons will not appear in the photographs, plants native to Venezuela and grown with rhododendrons in Mendocino County gardens will be presented. Her talk will include native Ve n e z u e l a n b o t a n i c a l s i n Canaima National Park, used in ornamental horticulture, used for personal adornment, used for baskets and structures, and used for consumption. As a sidelight, Karen will show botanical drawings from Pixar Animation Studio s 2009 Academy Award winning movie UP and the botanicals that were the models for the Pixar artists. Angel Falls was the model for UP s Paradise Falls as were the surrounding tepuis and flora. Karen is the niece of the American aviator-explorer James J i m m i e C r a w f o r d A n g e l ( ) for whom the world s tallest waterfall, Angel first saw the waterfall in 1933 during one of his solo flights in Venezuela. The waterfall measures 3,212 feet. Dinner before meeting Dear Noyo Chapter Supporters, Marianne asked me to send out an invitation to meet for dinner on November 16th with our guest speaker, Karen Angel. Meeting with Karen before our meeting will provide a warm welcome to our guest. Marianne has suggested that we meet at 5:00 at The Wharf. Currently, about a third of our members have not yet renewed. If you re reading this it s likely you ll eventually renew. If so, please do so now with Terry Giomi who is our membership guy. Please save him the time and effort of reaching out to you. Xmas Rsvp The Dec. meeting will be our annual Xmas dinner at David s Deli on Dec. 7, starting at 6 PM. ARS Convention It s not too early, or too late, to be planning for the ARS Convention in Eureka this year late in April, the week following our Show. Attending is fun but also being involved in the planning and executing the event is even better. Volunteering is a chance to meet other rhodoholics and to have some fun. ROY s It s time to make suggestions for the Rhododendron of the Year (ROY s). Along with the other northern California chapters we will make the suggestions for District 5. If you want to have some plants considered bring your suggestions to the Nov. meeting or contact Dick Jones. Noyo Show and Plant Sale Julie and Bruce Donaldson have volunteered to be the Show Chairs. They re relatively new to the Noyo Chapter and could use all the help you can give them. Please reach out to them and let them know that you ll help organize our Show.

3 Winter Color In our neck of the woods we tend to think that the time for rhodie color is in the spring. Au contraire! With a little planning it s very possible to be c u t t i n g f l o w e r s f r o m Thanksgiving to Valentine s Day. Here are a few of the winter bloomers, i.e. plants that normally bloom at this time. Top to bottom Robyn, Pink Delight, and Rosamundi

Planting, pruning (careful), fertilizing (?), cleaning up(old leaves), etc. Now s a good time to do some planting. Plants have hardened off and can withstand some shortage of water.

Cleaning up fallen leaves and composting them is a way to make future mulch, and to remove materials that often are ideal for many of the pathogens we do not want.

It will be raining. The roots have a chance to get a head start before the next growing season. Some fertilizing could be done now. A fall fertilizer, e.g , is very low in nitrogen which means it will not stimulate vegetative growth but will promote roots and stems and, in general, a stronger plant. Pruning should probably be delayed until early in the spring. Pruning now can result in growth during the colder weather and the resulting stems tend to be small and weak. interesting classes the speakers were great, and they ended up buying many new plants. Ben reported that $ for membership dues and donations has been collected of which $ was sent to the ARS. The next meeting is November 16th and the speaker will be Karen Angel. Terry Henderson from Log Cabin Nursery will be our speaker in January or February. Members can let Dennis know if they want something special that can be ordered before his arrival. Once again we will have an XMAS dinner at David s on In Memorium December 7th. The club will pay for dinner for 30. Members can bring drinks and appetizers to share. RSVP Dennis before December 1st. It was reported that Dick s wife was doing better. Dennis will need to order plants from Log Cabin Nursery soon (to be sold at the show and to members). Let him know if you have any requests. Dennis recommended that or show chairs, the Donaldson s have a show meeting soon. Ted & Fran Steinhart reported on t h e i r t r i p t o t h e We s t e r n Conference in Newport, Oregon. They didn t know many people there even though everyone else seemed to know each other. All in all they had a great time, went to many David Wheeler Although David and Kerry joined the Noyo Chapter just a couple of years ago they are part of the Noyo Chapter Family. Our sympathies go out to Kerry.
