2 Livable Kuala Lumpur Sarizal Yusman Yusff & Azizah Salim Syed Salim Milieu and Objectives Traditinally, since it first started in 27, the UPM Bachelr f Architecture prgram has cnducted varius urban studies n Malaysian cities and twn centers which are utside f Kuala Lumpur and the Greater Kuala Lumpur cnurbatins. As this was the inaugural fifth year architectural grup f students t ccupy a new 'enlarged' studi space at the UPM Faculty f Design and Architecture, it isdecided fr the studi t als shift frm the 'traditinal' nrm and be valiant t identify the Malaysian capital as the chsen city f study. As Kuala Lumpur is a relatively sizeable and dynamic internatinal urban centre, detailed urban studies f nly three chsen urban centers within the city, which are Bangsar, Pudu and Sentul are prpsed. These three lcalities present their wn rich and lcalized diverse histrical and cultural prsperity that wuld prvide the students with ample research avenues f the lifestyles and scia-cultural cncerns affecting the KL urbanites. Bangsar, Pudu and Sentul studies The first semester was delineated via the ARC 42 Advanced Architecture Studi prgram primarily fr macr site specific urban histrical and cntextual studies f the three urban centers with micr analytical studies f chsen individual sites. n line with the theme f 'Livable Kuala Lumpur', each grup was then initially tasked t prpse public urban amenities rejuvenatin prgrams with architectural and/ r scial strategies and prpsitins that culd elevate and invigrate the living qualities and further appreciatin f each f the three urban centers. The 2-22 Year 5 grup f 2 students was evenly divided int three grups fr the entire duratin f tw semesters f ARC 42 and ARC 43. The site analysis f Bangsar, Pudu and Sentul was carried ut as a cllective effrt amng the 7 members f each grup, with great encuragement and emphasis n students wrking n sites which wuld r culd be neighbring t each ther. This was quite successfully dne with the Bangsar grup f students f whereby 4 f the grup members wrked creatively n the frmer Lever Brthers land at Jalan Bangsar, designing schemes that actually link thematically and physically, while the Pudu and Sentul grup were quite individualistic t a certain extent. Subsequently each student was required t develp and prpse several ptential prjects and typlgies with prbable sites fr their individual 'Cmprehensive Design Prject'. All prjects were encuraged t 'fall back' n the theme f making Kuala Lumpur mre liveable as a city. As the name implies, the UPM Department f Architecture Year 5 ARC 43 architectural student prject was designed fr a cmprehensive study f architectural, cnstructin engineering, ecnmic, scial and cultural slutin and t be site and cntext specific in an existing urban fabric. Mre imprtantly, the students are expected t have reached and matured t an acceptable level f artistic and technical cmpetency, sufficient t satisfy the needs and expectatins f the internatinal architectural and building industry standards. They must als cnfrm t the full requirements f the Malaysian Bard f Architects standards f an architectural educatin. The final architectural design slutin shuld eventually demnstrate the student's ability t appreciate design apprpriateness in terms f the specific needs f the typical building user, envirnmental, scial and cultural cntext in relatin t the existing surrunding urban envirnment. A matured understanding and appreciatin f ecnmic values, life-cycle cst in relatin t design and cnstructin with an envirnmentally sensitive architectural slutin using Malaysian based green rating tls are als encuraged t be demnstrated by the architectural students f ARC 43. ARC 43 is the ultimate design exercise in the frmal educatin f every architectural student learning at UPM. t tests every student's ability first and fremst, as a team member and as an individual designer, twards achieving a persnal cmpetency t wrk n accmplishing a detailed analysis f a chsen site. nclusive f understanding and interpreting all the desiqn requirement f a chsen building design brief and prvisin f apprpriate spatial and functinal aspect, establishing and demnstrating the cnstructin design criteria and methdlgies and/r alternative nvel technical architectural detail slutins. Thse desiqn slutins culd have varius envirnmental and ecnmic advantageus r disadvantageus implicatins n the typlgy r chsen building type and achieving the mst apprpriate aesthetic respnse that satisfies successfully the design aspiratins and riginal intent f the authr. ndividual Prjects The selected prjects in this publicatin are frm the Sentul grup, namely the Natinal Railway Museum at KLPac by Khairul Asri, the Sentul ndie Film Centre by Tan Lay Peng and the Sentul Btanical Research nstitute by Dave Tan. Each is frm the Bangsar and the Pudu grup. The single submissin that bth represent the Bangsar and Pudu grups were shrt-listed candidates fr the 23 Tan Sri Chai Sau Lai architectural students' award (natinal). The drawings and artefacts f bth the Angkasapuri Symphny Arena by Azharl Kaspl and the Pudu Creative Hub by Nurlaila zyan were displayed at the Kuala Lumpur 23 Archidex Exhibitin tgether with the ther shrt-listed candidates frm ther architectural schls in and utside f Malaysia.
