4 for hydro and culture linework were contacted to produce right-reading scribe keys. Registration was maintained with three steel pins on pre-punched drawing materials. Text and symbols were applied to draughting film (cronaflex or mylar) using waxed stripping film. Water infill and native forest were created as negatives using the cut and peel method. A tree pattern on strippng film was initially used to symbolise exotic forest, and in later years at processing stage a pine-tree negative was combined with a peelcoat mask. Sand, shingle, road infill and residential areas were inked in by hand on cronaflex, usually as reverse-reading positives. Grid lines were initially scribed, though later a master grid was contacted to cronaflex, to which grid values and text were added using stripping film. Graticule ticks were scribed at one minute intervals around each edge with internal crosses at fifteen minute intervals. A compilation positive of contours and hydro linework assisted cartographers when drawing the three-dimensional relief shading. In lieu of contours a screened orange relief highlight was created to enhance the northwest slopes. A grey screened boundary depicted national and forest parks. Colour proofs were generated for in-house quality assurance, a process which also involved staff in the appropriate district office. For each printed colour Black, Blue, Green, Orange, Red and Grey a reverse-reading positive (or plate copy ) was produced. 38 NZMS 260 and 262
