3 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Jan Schaeferbrug Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam A 285 meter long bridge over the IJ canal links Oostelijke Handelskade to the new housing area on Java-island The logic location for the bridge was the place, where 1934 warehouse The Zwijger stood Instead of demolishing the old warehouse, the client decided to pierce the bridge through the building The bridge is designed for cars, bicycles and pedestrians The separate roads for these traffic types differ in inclination The underside of the bridge has an asymmetric curving shape, and its legs are set wide apart in the water Parts of the road-deck are detachable to allow incidental passing of large boats Project is public! 5 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Hermitage Amsterdam Amstel DP Amsterdam photo: Luuk Kramer The Amstelhof building, which was built in the 17th century as a home for the elderly, has been renovated and refurbished to house a branch of the Hermitage Museum from St Petersburg The Hermitage has a collection of three million works of art, far more than can ever be shown in St Petersburg Pieces from the collection were first shown in the Nieuwe Kerk After several successful exhibitions of Russian art, the idea was born to establish an annex of the Hermitage here in Amsterdam Besides fine arts, this centre of Russian culture is used as a venue for concerts and symposiums, houses a library, a documentation centre and shops Project is public! 6 photo: Rien van Rijthoven photo: Rob Hoekstra Zouthavenbrug Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam The new concert hall Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ is the figurehead on the bow of the Amsterdam Eastern Docklands The nautical character of the location is enhanced by connecting the building with the mainland by a bridge that is inspired by a gangplank Next door the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam welcomes cruise ships and offers a short walk to the canal boat marina under the bridge As befits a real gangplank, the bridge slopes somewhat askew from the quay to the entrance The only thing visible above the bridge deck are the railings on both sides which incorporate the lighting Underneath, a steel construction of 200 feet long and weighing almost 220 tons supports the bridge It's like a spinal column with 21 trusses that are kept in place by tension cables below During fabrication and after installation full-scale vibration tests determined the position and calibration of shock absorbers They assure that the bridge is firmly in place photo: Rien van Rijthoven Project is public! 8 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Maarten Helle Cancer Center Amsterdam De Boelelaan HZ Amsterdam The Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA) is part of and built in the direct vicinity of the VU Medical Centre (VUmc) It is an academical cancer expertise centre for research and treatment The CCA is financed mainly through private means and therefore built their semi-permanent housing with prefabricated building units that look like stacked containers The building has 7 storeys, each covering some 1425 m2 The whole complex was built within a year The team of project members supported the CCA by delivering the building system and their services for cost-price Project is not public! 9 photo: Miguel Loos photo: Miguel Loos Holiday Apartment Amsterdam Hazenstraat 1016 Amsterdam For this conversion of a small studio apartment in the centre of Amsterdam into a holiday home, the intervention was kept as compact as possible Around the sanitary core, a multifunctional piece of furniture is constructed, containing all the functions required: a hall stand, a kitchen with fridge, cooker and washer-dryer, a double bed, a dining table and a lot of storage space The basic shape was a simple cubic volume, which we wrapped around the sanitary core as a second skin In the design process, two big bites were taken out of the volume, creating the hall stand and kitchen counter A fold-away bed and a linen cupboard were also excised As a last step, a dining table was cut out, which can be extracted from under the kitchen counter All cutting planes were covered in olive green panelboard, emphasizing the sculptural character of the core In addition, the apartment was provided with a light green linoleum floor and white plastered walls When closed, the core constructio Project is not public! m² Loos s WHD Interieurbouw Amsterdam FML photo: Miguel Loos 9

12 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Eerste Openluchtschool Cliostraat Amsterdam The Eerste Openluchtschool (First Open Air School) in Amsterdam is a model example of Modernist architecture, of the Dutch 'Nieuwe Zakelijkheid' (New Objectivity) to be exact Johannes Duiker projected a concrete and glass building that shows proudly its glass-free corners thanks to the white-painted cantilevered structure The school is a pure cubic volume rotated 45º degrees to the courtyard block where it is located The only addition to the cube is the gym area in the ground plan Project is not public! 1930 Johannes Duiker Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín 12

13 photo: Willemien van Duijn photo: Willemien van Duijn Extension to Studio Buro3 De Breekstraat JL Amsterdam In the souterrain of a distinct villa dating from the early 1970s, located in Amsterdam north, is where architecture office buro3 is housed The former space, originally designed to be a garage, was too small The slope towards the garage was dug out, and an extension was built, half underground, enlarging the studio to twice it's size New cast-in-situ concrete walls have the same wood-vein-relief, from the wooden mould, which is also used in the rest of the building The concrete fundament is topped off with a glass roof The height the new glass framework and window stills is aligned with the window frames of the original villa design In the interior, a 6 meter long work table offers enough space for creation And even though the extension is orientated to north side, and partly underground, the glass roof creates a sea of light and direct view to external weather conditions Project is not public! m² buro3 architecten buro3 architecten MI_MOA photo: Willemien van Duijn To visit the interior, please make an appointment with the architects at the office: info@buro3nl or call +31 (0)

14 photo: Ewout Huibers photo: Ewout Huibers VIP Centre Schiphol Amsterdam Departures Terminal West 1118 CP Schiphol The defining characteristic of the luxurious VIP lounge at Schiphol Airport is Dutch design; everything has been designed and decorated by Dutch designers The interior was designed by architect bureau Concrete and designers including Piet-Hein Eek, Marcel Wanders, Joep van Lieshout, Hella Jongerius, Studio Job, Edward van Vliet, Maarten Baas, Jurgen Bey, René Holten, Irma Boom and Petra Blaisse Use of the VIP-centre is reserved for members of the Royal Family, Ministers and State Secretaries of the and abroad, international diplomats, trade delegations and top directors in international business The Royal Lounge is an enormous living room with lounge sofas, and Royal Family pictures on the bookshelves The wall paper in the room is created from 5,500 mini reproductions of the national coat of arms The new centre is accessible from landside and has a private parking area with security facilities photo: Ewout Huibers Project is not public! m² Interior architect concrete architectural associates Schiphol Group concrete 14

15 photo: Wansleben-Architekten photo: Wansleben-Architekten KMAR Amsterdam Kattenburger Straat 7 NL 1018 JA Amsterdam The KMAR (Royal Marechaussee at the Marine Barracks-site in the centre of Amsterdam) plumbs the tension between rule & exception, repetition & variation, statics & kinetics, surface & structure, meaning & riddle, group & individual, order & chaos, variety & simplicity This as an expression for the ambivalent situation of the user (military police), between the institution and the individual whom you serve, between the society which demands security, but which looks at security forces doubtfully Through this the building receives meaning and can step in a dialogue with the viewer and user One understands the building quickly, however, with a closer look the uncertainties rise Is the building closed or transparent? How many floors does it actually have? 18 photo: Ewout Huibers photo: Ewout Huibers Brasserie Witteveen Ceintuurbaan GH Amsterdam Restaurant Witteveen has got a lot of history in Amsterdam In 2009, IQ creative took up the challenge to make Witteveen into a present-day brasserie The overall design concept was to create a meeting for eating out and having a drink, a place where everyone, of every age can relax and feel at home in the same building as where Witteveen was before The new design has to recall earlier familiar feelings, like how it used to be with Persian rugs on the table The architects translated these nostalgic rugs into a Persian-rug-like mosaic of cement tiles on the floor The bar is a central lively spot and placed in the centre of the space Around this bar the areas are divided in a restaurant and a café, which are different regarding seats, tables and lighting but have the same kind of atmosphere In the back of Witteveen, there are three rooms that can be closed off by a pivot door glass wall: a wine chamber, a cosy living room with open fire and a family room for children and parents photo: Ewout Huibers Project is public! m², Interior architect Contractor concrete architectural associates concrete Roord Binnenbouw IQ creative Sunday - Thursday: Friday & Saturday: Kitchen every day till 2300 Witteveen is situated in De Pijp, the residential area of Amsterdam that in recent times has acquired a name as the Latin Quarter of Amsterdam Witteveen is located on the Ceintuurbaan, close to the junction with Ferdinand Bolstraat, within walking distance of Albert Cuypstraat 18

20 Apolloschool Willem Witsenstraat AZ Amsterdam In the 1980s, Hertzberger designed the Apollo School, a combination of two different schools with two different educational systems He organized all the classrooms around an internal space, an amphitheatre-like organization that has been wholeheartedly emulated since There are smaller corridors and blocked-out areas that allow students to work outside the classrooms The 1990s were a time of shrinking budgets for school construction in the, said Hertzberger To stretch the money, he spent it on creating cohesive organization This tactic was also a response to the wave of immigration: by organizing space well, students of all languages and levels of understanding could feel comfortable photo: Wing-Ni Lam Project is not public! 1983 Herman Hertzberger Wing-Ni 20

25 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Averroes and Avicenna Confuciusplein LG Amsterdam These two buildings are part of the renewal of the square Confuciusplein in the west of Amsterdam They replace two existing buildings from the 1950's The program consists of commercial and parking space on the ground floor with apartments on the upper floors The dwellings and apartments have been organised around a collective inner garden and a roof garden, both visually connected with the surroundings The gradual transition to the surrounding area is further underscored by the fact that the building height decreases, from five storeys on the square to four, three and two storeys in the rear The universal character of the blocks makes their powerful presence palpable even beyond the square The large frames in the facades mark the individual dwellings within the volumes The loggias folded outward from the frames have a graphic effect and emphasize the relationship between the interior of the apartment and the square Project is not public! 27 photo: i29 interior architects photo: i29 interior architects Home 07 Rooseveltlaan 1079 Amsterdam This single-family apartment for four people is situated in a stately building in southern Amsterdam The original structure, with rooms for staff, a double hall and long hallways with lots of doors has been transformed into a spacious, transparent dwelling full of light and air A kitchen in combination with cabinets from floor to ceiling has laser-cut front panels, all spray-painted white This pattern results in a dynamic mixture of open and closed cabinets, the holes also function as integrated hand grips The transparency of the object's skin gives depth to the volume, which is complimented by furniture like the Grcic chair one An atrium with open staircases brings natural light from a large roof light into the living area Along the open staircase a wall of two stories high is covered with clear pine wood, and connects the two levels Upstairs the master bedroom is situated next to a large bathroom with a finish of structured tiles from Patricia Urquiola photo: i29 interior architects Project is not public! m² Interior architect i29 interior architects private i

29 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd HES Amsterdam Fraijlemaborg CV Amsterdam The HES School of Economics and Business is situated a stone's throw away from the Amsterdam Arena The biggest design challenge was clear from the first moment; how to create suitable accommodation for some five thousand, mainly young, students in the sober surroundings of Amsterdam South East?
