7 Happy Birhday o ACP we re 15 years old! In 1997, a seed was planed during a conversaion beween wo people on a road rip. They were brainsorming abou how o build sronger connecions beween phoographers. Why no have an even ha would bring everyone ogeher o form a real phoography communiy in Alana? The nex year a 501(c)(3) was formed and ACP s firs even, a lecure and dinner, was aended by 100 people. ACP s radiion of parnering wih oher organizaions was eviden from is earlies beginnings. From a single successful even, he fesival has grown o almos 150 evens, exhibiions and experiences showcasing almos 1000 phoographers. 8 [ een spiri ] Teen Spiri New ACP Program Gives Teens Wih Cameras and Pens a New Perspecive 6 Wha does a porrai say abou a person? Wha does i leave o he imaginaion? These are quesions being explored by eens admied o Scoish Rie and Egleson children s hospials. I s par of a special program creaed by ACP o comfor hose wih chronic illnesses who ofen find he hospial o be heir second home for weeks, even monhs. A eam of voluneers, led by Corinne Adams, organizes he groups and heir discussions on porraiure. The eens firs ake self-porrais, hen perform a wriing exercise ha s raw and hearfel. This expressive oule is proving o be ranformaive for he paiens, who are jus discovering who hey are. The hospial environmen doesn allow for much conrol, so his program gives eens conrol of he camera and he freedom o express hemselves. The end resuls are powerful porrais and saemens such as he ones o he righ. When you look a a person, you wonder how does ha person ge along wih heir day. Normal is jus a word. No one is normal. Everyone has a diagnosis. Bu no one s diagnosis defines hem. 10 [ Nicholas Nixon ] Nicholas Nixon Behind he Lens wih his Year s Keynoe Speaker 8 Since he 1970s, Boson-based phoographer Nicholas Nixon (born Deroi, 1947) has praciced large-forma porraiure and documenary phoography, forging a rich and varied body of work celebraed for is humanisic approach and meiculous deail. Nixon rose o prominence afer being included in he groundbreaking 1975 New Topographics exhibi a he George Easman House in Rocheser, New York a show ha is widely considered a urning poin in he hisory of landscape phoography. Nixon s subsequen subjecs have ranged from porch life in he rural Souh, he inimacy shared beween couples, ciyscapes, and schools in he Boson meropolian area. He has become paricularly well known for his close depicions of family, which simulaneously bear a personal meaning o he aris, while communicaing on a universal level. Nixon s bes-known series, The Brown Sisers is a serial porrai sudy ha began in 1975 and coninues oday. Each year, he phoographer records an image of his wife Beverly (Bebe) Brown ogeher wih her hree sisers. Seing up his 8- x 10-inch camera a eye level wih his subjecs, Nixon capures he sisers congregaed ogeher in he same order from lef o righ, recording heir incremenal aging and evolving demeanor over ime. Alhough muliple exposures are made, only one is chosen o represen he women in prin each year. Nixon received his B.A. in English from he Universiy of Michigan in 1969 and M.F.A. from he Universiy of New Mexico in Since 1975, Nixon has worked as a par-ime professor of phoography a he Massachuses College of Ar and Design. He is he recipien of hree Naional Endowmen for he Ars Fellowships and wo Guggenheim Fellowships, and has had solo exhibiions a major museums including he Museum of Modern Ar (1976, 1988), Ar Insiue of Chicago (1985) and he Vicoria and Alber Museum (1989). His work is included

12 [ American Beauy ] American Beauy Dr. Deborah Willis discusses her exhibi Posing Beauy in African American Culure 10 Deborah Willis, Ph.D. is one of he naion s leading hisorians of African American phoography and curaors of African American culure. She is currenly he chair of he Deparmen of Phoography & Imaging a he Tisch School of he Ars a New York Universiy and has an affiliaed appoinmen as a universiy professor wih he College of Ars and Sciences, Africana Sudies. She was a Guggenheim Fellow, a Flecher Fellow and a MacArhur Fellow. Dr. Willis is he auhor of Reflecions In Black: A Hisory of Black Phoographers 1840 o he Presen and Le Your Moo Be Resisance. Her book Michelle Obama: The Firs Lady in Phoographs received he 2010 NAACP Image Award for Ousanding Lierary Work Biography/Auobiography. She has exhibied her phoographs a he Zora Neale Hurson Museum in Eaonville,

Feauring more han 75 phoographs by leading, emerging and amaeur phoographers, i explores he ways in which our conemporary undersanding of beauy has been informed by phoographers and ariss working from 1890 o he presen. I incorporaes a diverse range of media including phoography, film, video, fashion, adverising and oher forms of popular culure. I also promps rich discussions abou he conesed ways ha African and African American beauy have been represened in hisorical and conemporary conexs. Posing Beauy does no define beauy. Insead, i considers he idea of black beauy in phoography; how i is posed, consruced, imagined, reviewed, criiqued and conesed in ar, he media and everyday culure. This groundbreaking projec is rooed in he belief ha beauy is empowering in black culure. Posing Beauy explores how beauy is realized by boh he subjec and he phoographer. I also asks us o hink criically abou he noion of beauy. Reframing Black is Beauiful Conversaion wih he Curaor Join us on Thursday, Ocober 17, a 7 p.m. when Dr. Willis leads a conversaion examining and challenging convenional perspecives on ideniy, beauy, cosmopolianism and communiy in Africa and he African Diaspora. She will also examine he relaionship beween beauy and poliics and how such opics have shaped a new undersanding of reading black culure from he anebellum period o he presen. Doors open a 6:30pm. 14 [ Porfolio Review ] The Meris of a Porfolio Review And why every phoographer should have one 12 If you re serious abou phoography, hen ake your passion o he nex level and paricipae in a porfolio review. For indeph advice, here s no beer oule, and you won find a unique even like his for painers or sculpors. For phoographers unfamiliar wih he review process, i basically works like his you selec roughly wo dozen of your favorie phoographs and arrange for a privae consulaion wih a phoographic exper o discuss your work in deail. The ACP Porfolio Review and Walk offers ariss he opporuniy o mee wih highly respeced museum curaors, gallery owners, phoo ediors, and agency represenaives from across he Unied Saes and beyond all in a single day, and wih minimal expense. You can expec he reviewer o discuss he meris of he phoographs such as your obvious srenghs, he success of your concep, and he appropriaeness of your echnique. The reviewer will also discuss areas for improvemen and possible markes for your work. I is a grea idea o come prepared wih a digial recorder or a noebook so ha you don miss any pearls of wisdom or imporan names. You should also come prepared wih quesions. This is a conversaion, and he more you engage your reviewer, he more invaluable your experience will be. We can almos guaranee you will become a beer presener of your work. Hundreds of phoo lovers aend: sudens, eachers, families, gallery owners, phoographers, and phoography collecors (paricipans can someimes recoup all heir expenses hrough phoo sales a his even). This is such a rewarding way o end an incredible experience. As in all oher areas of life, he mos imporan hings you can do afer he review are o implemen lessons learned and follow up on all leads. 25 ACP Collaboraion: Richard Pare Sepember High Museum of Ar Work by Richard Pare lecure Thu, Sep 19, 7pm Richard Pare, maser phoographer and founding phoographic curaor of he Canadian Cenre for Archiecure, will commen on he impac of Le Corbusier s work on conemporary design. Le Corbusier was one of he mos influenial personaliies in 20h-cenury culure. While bes known for his archiecure and urban planning, his ineress spanned inerior design, drawing, paining and phoography. A seleced group appear in he major rerospecive exhibiion currenly a he Museum of Modern Ar in New York called Le Corbusier: An Alas of Modern Landscapes.
