2 Location Southend-on-Sea is one of the principal commercial centres in Essex and is situated approximately 40 miles east of London on the northern bank of the Thames Estuary. The Town has long been a favourite seaside resort, largely due to its close proximity to London. Although it is most famous for its pleasure pier, seven mile coastline and award winning beaches, the town has a range of attractions on offer including the annual illuminations, the torchlight carnival procession, Adventure Island and the Golden Mile of arcades. Due to the expansion of the South East Essex College and the arrival of the University of Essex, the town also boasts a strong student population and a thriving night time economy.
