3 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle T huis JF Kennedylaan ET Breda In earlier days, the city park of Breda had a tea house But the courtyard and garden at that time, where this tea house was located, were not public and only local nobility could come and drink tea The original tea house was replaced for a music kiosk, and a pavilion, which in time, also disappeared In 2002 a new modern tea house was built, the 'T-huis', open for all to enjoy the park and free to visit Dutch artist and architect John Körmeling has designed a transparent building on a red concrete carpet, with a large canopy On the roof he placed large neon words, like 'ice' and 'whipped cream' In 2004 this design won the architecture prize of Breda photo: Maarten Helle Project is public! 5 photo: Maarten Scheurwater Carré Nonnenveld HN Breda This courtyard housing block clad in wood veneer is placed on the Chassé campus, a former military base at the south of the city centre The compact block sits on a pedestal containing parking garage and circulation is arranged by three staircases and elevator tracts which can be reached through the courtyard The 10 storey high building contains over 144 rental and owner-occupied houses of different types All the apartments have balconies, which have custom made sun shading elements made off expanded aluminum sheet, framed in aluminum profiles West 8 designed the courtyard and Inside Outside developed the landscape OMA was also the mastermind behind the urban plan of this successful campus concept Project is not public! 9 photo: Archipelontwerpers De Baljurk Kettingstraat 2511 AM Den Haag Archipelontwerpers produced a design for the renovation of 8 shops in the historical centre of The Hague The street where they stand formed an exception in the otherwise beautifully refurbished city centre: the dilapidated dwellings above the shops stood empty and many of the buildings were boarded up; the public space was neglected The client, property developer Geste, wanted to build something that would give the neighbourhood a boost The façades of the buildings were restored and behind them new dwellings were built, accessed from a raised terrace Below ground level is a large retail space with a flexible floor plan The 8th, corner building has a new glass curtain wall draped in a golden steel mesh that lends the whole project an exclusive air Attention-getting was not the only reason for choosing a sculptural form - it also alludes to the formal idiom of the Art Nouveau architecture in the immediate vicinity and to the sinuous course of the stream that once flowed here Public access unknown! 2005 Archipelontwerpers Geste groep Kirsten_Hannema photo: Archipelontwerpers Located on the corner of Kettingstraat and Achterom in The Hague's city centre 9

12 photo: Guy Ackermans photo: Guy Ackermans Rietveld Lyceum Extension Kruisbergseweg BP Doetinchem This is one of the last buildings designed by famous Dutch designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld, known by his Red and Blue chair (1918), the Schröder house (1924) and influenced by the De Stijl movement The school lies in a park that combines arboretum with outdoor sports facilities The extension integrated the building in its surroundings By sinking most of the extension into the ground, it fills the need for more space and also creates a heart for the school and enhances the quality of the park The result presents itself as a timber-clad volume that rises slightly above ground level between the assembly hall and one of the wings The extension is visually connected to the existing school building by means of a double-height area containing a mezzanine floor which accommodates the library and forms a direct link between the school s entrance lobby, the new annexe, and the assembly hall Inside, patios provide daylight and act as orientation points photo: Guy Ackermans Project is not public! 16 photo: Peter Cox photo: Peter Cox Just your kind of thing Bilderdijklaan NH Eindhoven Since 8 April 2006, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven is connected to the Stratumsedijk by way of a bridge shaped like a bright pink house The bridge is designed and built by Eindhoven artist and architect John Körmeling, commissioned by the Van Abbemuseum This work of art entitled Echt iets voor u is the shortest covered bridge in the worldthe bright pink house and bridge has the words Echt iets voor u (Just your kind of thing) on the roof top in in twinkling lights It is a remarkable, inviting eye catcher that makes the area behind the museum lively, attractive and characteristic, even at night The bridge gives you direct access to the open-air café on the banks of the river Dommel John Körmeling is represented in the Van Abbemuseum collection with several works He is also responsible for one of the rooms in Plug In, the new approach to presenting the museum s collection Project is public! 17 photo: Duccio Malagamba photo: Duccio Malagamba Dutch Media Authority Hoge Naarderweg 78 NL-1200 BK Hilversum The Dutch Media Authority, called "Commissariaat voor de Media", upholds the rules which are formulated in the Dutch Media Act as well as in the regulations based on this act This is done by the providing of information beforehand and by subsequent supervision Fairness and consistency are the Commissariaat s basic principles in enforcing the Media Act The activities of the Commissariaat focus on both public service and commercial broadcasters and on cable operators The building for this institution stands on a slope in-between trees, at the border of the Media-park The existing trees have been maintained, and some of them grow through the overhanging construction at the entrance The interior circulation is organised at the façade, where the corridors are situated One side has stairways which bridge the gentle slope, on the other side the difference in height has been crossed by a talud The building has several patio s They provide ample daylight and places for lunch-breaks Project is not public! 24 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Municipal Office Kanaalweg PA Middelburg Built in between the water and a busy road this narrow piece of land set a difficult task; too small to for a traditional building system of concrete cast in situ So RAU decided to build with prefabricated concrete slabs This reduced building time and costs With the left over budget they were able to integrate sustainable facilities to bring energy consumption of the building down: a green elevator, photovoltaic cells on the roof, sun boiler, roof garden, sustainable developed wood, balanced ventilation and a bivalent heat pump The interior climate is controlled by activating the concrete itself A system of pipes regulates the temperature by transporting warm or cold water through the floors The mass of the concrete slowly absorbs the water temperature and releases it It also works the other way round: in winter, the people who use the building actually help to heath it: the heath produced by computers and bodies accumulates in the concrete mass, and warms the water inside photo: Christian Richters Project is public!
