3 News: Schwartz attends Institute fr Library Leaders Laura Schwartz attended ACRL/Harvard Institute fr Library Leaders, August 5-10, Internatinal library leaders gathered and fcused n leadership at academic institutins. The tw discussin themes f the week were 1. Hw well-psitined is my rganizatin t meet current and future challenges?, and 2. Hw effective is my wn leadership? This was an amazing pprtunity t learn abut higher educatin frm Harvard faculty. It was als a terrific netwrking pprtunity. If yu have questins abut the prgram, please get in tuch with Laura.

4 News: University f Hustn Jenkins Library The William R. Jenkins Architecture and Art Library welcmed a new full-time emplyee this summer. Jackie Rcha nw serves as the Evening Supervisr and Reserves Manager. Ms. Rcha is a frmer UH emplyee wh recently received a Bachelr s in Mass Cmmunicatin frm Texas State University. The ther full-time staff members bth received campus service awards at the end f the Spring semester. Ylanda Rdriguez was named Emplyee f the Year fr the entire UH Libraries system. Catherine Essinger received the Staff Service Award fr the Cllege f Architecture. Catherine Essinger als attended the Texas Library Assciatin s TALL Texans Leadership Institute last May and was recently appinted t TLA s Leadership Develpment Cmmittee. The Jenkins Library s Web site, catalg, and printing system were redesigned in August. The library system has installed print management sftware t help alleviate excessive paper waste. Printing will n lnger be free t all library users. Patrns nt affiliated with UH will nw pay eleven cents per printed page. The website and catalg may underg slight revisin based n user feedback. 5 News: McCrd takes librarian psitin at New Mexic Office f the State Engineer Frmer ARLIS/Texas-Mexic Chapter Member and Officer Plly McCrd annunces that she recently accepted a psitin as a Librarian at the New Mexic Office f the State Engineer. She submitted the fllwing library prfile: The OSE Library cllects materials related t the histry, science, law, use and management f water resurces in New Mexic and the surrunding regin. Fr the architecture librarians, we are in the basement f the Bataan Memrial Building, which was the State Capitl frm Lk at The building is in dwntwn Santa Fe acrss the street frm the Rundhuse (the current capitl) and abut 4 blcks suth f the Plaza. Because it was the State Capitl, the basement has a number f vaults where Finance used t keep the mney, s I have a real turn-f-the-last-century bank vault fr my archives. The cllectin includes a variety f maps, USGS and ther Federal publicatins, reprts and ther dcuments issued by the New Mexic State Engineer ging back t Territrial times, cnsultant reprts, hydrgraphic surveys, technical reprts and master's theses frm New Mexic Tech, University f New Mexic and New Mexic State University students, landmark legal pinins and sme related materials, and, I'm sure, lts I've yet t uncver. I'm the first prfessinal librarian they've ever had and they hadn't had anyne in the library n a full-time basis in ver a year befre a started. I estimate that abut 40% f the cllectin is catalged in sme way: sme LC, sme Dewey, sme SUDOC, and sme in that arcane static system I'd nly heard abut befre where a title is assigned a specific lcatin n a shelf. The rest? N catalging whatsever. My predecessr had cntract catalgers cming in but fr sme reasn he didn't want them t actually label the items s even if it was catalged, the item isn't cnnected t the number. 8 News: Janine Henri takes librarian psitin at UCLA After sixteen years f service, Janine Henri is leaving her psitin as Head Librarian f the Architecture & Planning Library at the University f Texas at Austin after August 31, She has accepted a psitin as Architecture, Design, and Digital Services Librarian in the Arts Library at UCLA, where she will begin emplyment n September. 17, Beth Ddd will be the Interim Head f the Architecture & Planning Library, effective September 1, T assist in the interim, Library Assistant Dnna Cates' appintment has been increased frm half-time t full-time. ARLIS/Texas-Mexic and her clleagues at UT Austin wish her well and success in her new psitin. As a result f this mve, this is Janine's last submissin as Architecture Libraries News Clumn Editr. 10 News: Hirsch Library displays bks and phtgraphs by Lee Friedlander This Hirsch Library is currently featuring the bks and phtgraphs f Lee Friedlander, wh has lng been recgnized as ne f the mst talented, prlific and influential phtgraphers f the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibitin will be n view frm August 21, 2007 January 13, Friedlander s explratin f genres ranging frm prtraiture and dcumentary t landscape and still life shw his abiding interest in capturing the wrld arund us in its many guises, ften with great candr and humr. His visin bears witness t everyday life in such a way that the rdinary becmes extrardinary. Tw significant memrial gifts enabled the Hirsch Library t strengthen its cllectin ver the past few mnths. The family and friends f Jyce Rader dnated funds in her memry fr the purchase f tw substantial wrks: Buddhist Sculptures in Tibet (2 vlumes, Zurich, 2001) and Les Miniatures du XVIIIe Siécle: Prtraits de Femmes, (Paris, 1913). 13 News: Wittliff Gallery features Lnesme Dve phtgraphs and new bk The Wittliff Gallery f Suthwestern & Mexican Phtgraphy at Texas State University-San Marcs presents the 10th publicatin in its series, A Bk f Phtgraphs frm Lnesme Dve by Bill Wittliff, bringing the sweeping visual imagery f the CBS miniseries t the printed page at last. 14 News: Suthwestern Writers Cllectin presents first exhibitin frm the King f the Hill Archive This special exhibitin entitled, The Making f King f the Hill, cmes frm the King f the Hill Archives at the Suthwestern Writers Cllectin and is n view frm September 1 December 14, It features episde drafts, whitebards, a bird s-eye illustratin f Hank s neighbrhd, interviews with the characters, results frm the writers research trips, and music frm and inspired by the shw. The materials and memrabilia reveal the creative team at wrk and rund ut the back stry f the Hill family s life and times. 15 News: Texas VR curatrs frm first purchasing cnsrtium with Archivisin Digital Library Effrts t negtiate Texas purchasing cnsrtiums with digital image vendrs have been nging ver the past few mnths. With the blessings f 17 visual resurces curatrs in the state, I made cntact with the vendrs n ur behalf. Negtiatins with Schlars Resurce is nging, but I am pleased t reprt that a discunt grup has been frmed with Archivisin, Inc., a majr vendr f architectural digital images. This agreement allws all Texas universities, clleges, cmmunity clleges, museums, and secndary schls t license the Archivisin Digital Pht Research Library (currently ver 29,000 images) at a huge discunt ver individual purchases thrugh Schlars Resurce. Schls will autmatically receive the discunt when rdering the entire archive frm Archivisin. The Texas Discunt Buying Grup is the first state discunt grup fr Archivisin and will becme their mdel fr ther states and prvinces. The grup discunt allws all Texas institutins t pay the same lw, per student fee fr the images in the base cllectin f 16,000 images with even greater discunts fr additinal mdules ffered by Archivisin. Images cme in JPEG frmat, with TIFF images available at an additinal charge. Institutins can specific the frmat fr the data they receive. Ttal cst fr the archive depends upn the number f students enrlled at the institutin. 16 Cllectin Prfile: Visual Resurce Cllectin, Texas A&M University The Visual Resurce Cllectin is lcated within the Technical Reference Center, the architectural reference library supprted by the Cllege f Architecture at Texas A&M University. The cllectin functins principally as a teaching resurce fr faculty within the cllege, but als serves faculty utside f the cllege and grants limited access t students. The cllectin cnsists f almst 152, mm slides and ver 36,000 digital images f primarily art and architecture. The Visual Resurce Cllectin huses several special cllectins including the Gunn Cllectin. Ralph Ellis Gunn was a prminent landscape architect wh designed extensively in the River Oaks area f Hustn in the 1950 s, 60 s and early 70 s. The Gunn Cllectin includes sets f landscaping plans fr residences in Hustn, ther areas f Texas, Indiana, Luisiana, Flrida, and Mississippi. The cllectin cnsists f several bks, sets f plans, and almst 900 slides, all digitally imaged, dnated in the late 1970 s and is available fr viewing within the library. In 2000, the Cllege f Architecture purchased the frmerly cmmercial slide cllectin Architectural Clr Slides, funded in 1947 by Franziska Prges Hsken. The Franziska Prges Hsken Architecture/Urban Develpment Cllectin f apprximately 52,200 slides 35 mm slides and 14,600 phtgraphs was at ne time ne f the largest cllectins f wrldwide images phtgraphed and dcumented by a single individual. Franziska Prges Hsken was an architect and urban planner, jurnalist, and phtgrapher. She was the first wman t earn a master s degree at the Harvard Graduate Schl f Design. She pened a furniture design studi with her husband and later became a cnsultant, rganizer and authr. She was the Funder f

17 Wmen s Internatinal Netwrk (WIN) and helped rganize the Human Rights Health Actin Netwrk. The cllectin cnsists primarily f architectural and planning images, including views f prminent buildings, sites and regins acrss the glbe. Wrldwide histric architecture and significant cntemprary architecture are well represented, as are architectural styles and urban develpment. The Cllectin staff cnsists f a curatr, an assistant curatr, and graduate assistants, whm facilitate its grwth and maintenance. In 1992, a database was develped t prduce slide labels and catalg cards using Duble Helix, a relatinal database sftware package develped by Macintsh. It was migrated int a custmized Filemaker Pr database in With the transitin frm slides t digital images, MDID was implemented in 2003 as the digital image management system. The main library has acquired ARTstr, s the faculty has access n campus. There was a marked decrease in slide use in the , and in , slide use had all but ceased. This prmpted the recent purchase f a new cmputer with flat screen and new digital camera fr cpystand use.

18 Suth Reginal Representative Clumn It is with great pleasure that I am able t begin my tenure as yur Suth Reginal Representative during a pivtal pint in the Sciety s evlutin. I realize that I am filling a pair f very large shes left by my predecessr, Heather Ball. In taking n this psitin, I am inspired t live up t the high expectatins she set. As an ARLIS/NA Texas-Mexic chapter fficer I had the gd frtune t cllabrate with Heather n many ccasins, and, just as she was, I will be accessible and respnsive t any need that the chapter may have during my tenure. I encurage yu t me directly with any questins, cmments, r cncerns yu have related t the Sciety. Yu may wnder what led me t agree t serve n the ARLIS/NA Bard as the Suth Reginal Representative. First, I was very inspired by Heather Ball s effectiveness and I felt that I t culd prvide an effective cnduit fr cmmunicatin between my clleagues in chapters and the ARLIS/NA Bard. I have gained invaluable experience serving as the chapter s Secretary, Vice-President/President-Elect, President, and currently as the Past President. I believe that an rganizatin is nly as strng as the peple wh make up its membership and with this in mind, I have pursued pprtunities t serve in the prfessinal assciatins that have given me s much thrughut my career. It is in this spirit that I take n this imprtant rle and lk frward t cllabrating with yu nt nly in my rle as Suth Reginal Representative but als an active member in the chapter during the Sciety s year f transitin t a new administrative structure. The Executive Bard, in respnse t the Assessment Task Frce Recmmendatins and the feedback that the recmmendatins engendered frm the membership, has implemented a hybrid Bard structure during the cming year. What this means fr reginal representatives is that we will nt nly cntinue t serve the chapters in the way that we have traditinally but als we will take n the functinal fficer rles utlined in the recmmendatins. 21 2007 Lis Swan Jnes Prfessinal Develpment Award Recipient Reprt frm Beverly Mitchell TX/MX Chapter Reprt Thank yu t chapter members f ARLIS Texas-Mexic fr the Lis Swan Jnes travel grant award. The pprtunity t attend the cnference was a rewarding prfessinal experience. Over the curse f the tw and a half days I attended the ARLIS/NA cnference in Atlanta, I went t several sessins and meetings. As a whle, I fund it very helpful simply t g t these scheduled events t learn abut their purpse and functin, and the First-time Attendees Orientatin sessin n Thursday evening helped t rient me and make me feel welcme at the cnference. On Sunday, befre my departure back t Texas, I attended the Wittenbrn cmmittee meeting chaired by the utging chair Terrie Wilsn. I am lking frward t wrking with this cmmittee this year, and I feel it an hnr t be asked t cntribute. In additin, it was my pleasure t meet members f bth ARLIS/NA and the TX/MX chapter. Belw are the sessins and meetings that I attended. FRIDAY, APRIL 27TH Sessin 2: Cmmunicatin and Cllabratin: Wrking with Faculty fr Infrmatin Fluency As a reference librarian ne f my duties is teaching art and art histry students hw t find schlarly infrmatin r images f art fr their research. I was particularly interested in this sessin, and the presenters gave me sme gd ideas fr pssibly making my classes mre effective and targeted tward teaching students t lk up materials in the library r utside f it. Jennifer Parker s presentatin n creating ne-hur credit instructin curses in art was very cncrete in her discussin. I am nt at the pint f develping a credited instructin prgram, but it gave me the idea f creating tests r pp quizzes t assess student learning. That being said, a credited instructin prgram is a plan that we want t cnsider at the Hamn Arts Library. Jennifer als gave us the address fr the curse utline n her website, which I recmmend fr anyne wh teaches hw t search art and art histry resurces: I anticipate that the feedback frm these tests will be immensely helpful. Lucie Stylianpuls, wh was actually a pleasure just t meet and chat with, gave a presentatin that encuraged me t make better use f sme f my architecture resurces in my teaching. Claudia Cvert utlined several cre cmpetencies t serve as a guide thrugh the teaching prcess. She als emphasized pre- and pst-testing fr instructin sessins. Sessin 4: Art Libraries: New and Imprved My interest in this sessin was space planning issues. Linda R. McKee, Head Librarian at the Jhn and Mabel Ringling Museum f Art Library, and Artis Wick, the Assistant

22 Librarian discussed and shwed their new library and its facilities. They discussed planning fr space ahead f time and the imprtance f insisting n what needs and future needs yur library has fr space and use. They als discussed their very helpful system f cunting and marking ff linear feet fr the mve. Laura Schwartz shwed images f the UT Austin s Fine Arts Library renvatin, which included getting mre space fr materials and imprved facilities fr students. T discver their needs, they cllected extensive bservatinal and use data. Amng ne f several impressive changes was hw, by remving high partitins, they created a feeling f pen and mre expansive space in the library. Carl Terry, Directr f Library Services, RISD, gave a wnderful presentatin f RISD s unique pprtunity t huse the Fleet Library cllectin in a 1917 bank building acrss the river frm the schl. The new space nt nly prvide much needed rm fr the cllectin and expanded study areas, but it als gave staff the ability t create a new cmmunity envirnment extending beynd the students needs t the cmmunity f Prvidence, Rhde Island. The Fleet Library website prvides a nicely detailed pdf n their new building, and it is wrth reading fr any new and creative ideas n library space planning: Reference and Infrmatin Services Sectin Meeting this sectin was the mst relevant t my psitin, and it is definitely a sectin that I wuld like t keep up with n their activities. Vlunteered at the services desk I enjyed this activity. It helped me with a few questins f my wn, and it gave me the chance t meet ther librarians. Natalia Lnchyna, wh helped manage the vlunteers, was gracius and quite helpful. SATURDAY, APRIL 28TH ARTstr Users Grup meeting I fund this Users Grup very wrthwhile. I regularly teach students and faculty hw t search and use the tls in ARTstr. There were a few annuncements that I had nt read r heard abut. I m glad t knw that ARTstr is migrating t a new platfrm, Ajax, and that images fr schlarly publicatin frm a limited number f cllectins will be available t users. Max Marmr, wh has been s instrumental in develping the image cllectins in ARTstr, will nw serve as the President f the Samuel H. Kress Fundatin. Sessin 8: Ging Outside, Cming in frm the Cld: Outsurcing, Mnlighting, and Cnsulting What I fund mst useful frm this sessin was Carl K. Rusk s talk, Liberating the Library: Creative Slutins t Shrinking Budgets and Human Resurces. Grant writing fr large library r archival prjects and managing vlunteers r part-time staff are central cncerns fr all libraries managing their resurces with a limited budget.

23 Tk advantage f visiting the High Museum. I was thrilled t have the pprtunity t the see The Gates f Paradise exhibitin and becme mre familiar with the Museum s cllectin. Academic Divisin Meeting Since this is a new divisin, there was a lt f discussin abut its purpse and what directin it shuld r might take ver the next year. I learned that there is the desire fr academic art librarians t have a presence in ARLIS as a divisin distinct frm museum librarians. On the part f sme attendees, there seemed t be the need fr prgrams that address the services unique t thse prvided by academic art librarians. 24 2007 Lis Swan Jnes Prfessinal Develpment Award Recipient Reprt frm Kathryn Pierce I want t begin by expressing my thanks t the Lis Swan Jnes Award Cmmittee and t all wh made this award pssible. This award prvided me the pprtunity t attend my first ARLIS/NA cnference. As a student, attending this cnference has strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in the field. This experience pened up my understanding f the real issues at wrk in art and architecture infrmatin psitins. On my first day at the cnference in Atlanta, I participated in The Art and Architecture f Death Tur thrugh Oakland Cemetery. The tur, cnducted at twilight was a great way t learn abut the histry f Atlanta, the peple, and the built wrks in the cemetery. It was als an infrmal way t interact with ther cnference attendees. I started ff several mrnings with a yga sessin that prepared me mentally and physically fr the cnference sessins t cme. The first sessin I attended was Backpack t Briefcase, where prfessinals in the field shared their experiences and advice with students and recent graduates. As a student, this was particularly helpful in answering the many questins that arise as we transitin int a prfessinal rle. Tpics discussed were hw t plan fr yur career, the imprtance f thery as well as practice in research, places t lk nn-traditinal jb pprtunities, taking advantage f prfessinal develpment pprtunities, and navigating the tenure track. Next, I attended the Architecture Sectin Meeting. The primary tpic f discussin centered arund the transitinal perid in ARLIS and ptential disslutin f rundtables and sectins in favr f a mre fluid structure. While this culd increase interchange and decrease the bureaucratic structure, there is cncern that withut a dedicated sectin, architecture wuld lse its presence within the rganizatin. The idea f special interest grups was cnsidered, wherein each grup culd determine its wn structure, purpse, and requirements. The sectin determined there is sufficient interest and cmmitment t maintaining a grup in sme frm. There was a call fr thughtfully cnsidering the purpse f the grup as this will cntribute t the future rganizatin. The sessin Architecture f the Old Suth was appealing, as I am primarily interested in architecture resurces and architectural histry. Rbert Leath f the Museum f Early Suthern Decrative Arts (MESDA) discussed the resurces held at his institutin and the questins that arise when attempting t present histrically accurate recreatins f architectural settings. 25 Library reprted n a digital initiative f Frances Benjamin Jhnstn's wrk. Jhnstn was a phtgrapher cmmitted t dcumenting the vernacular architecture f Virginia as well as ther suthern lcatins. Luis P. Nelsn f the University f Virginia's Schl f Architecture intrduced his research n the relatinship between the 18th century Anglican Church and scial rder, where architecture can be used as a lens thrugh which t view scial experience. On Saturday, I started ut with the Ten Years After: A Decade f Cpyright Develpments sessin, where legal experts discussed legislative initiatives, implicatins fr digital cpies, impact f recent lawsuits n visual images, and cncerns regarding new wrks based n lder wrks. Bth lawyers presented Kelly v. Arriba Sft Crpratin as a case where determinatins were made regarding image size (thumbnail), cmmercial intent, and transfrmative use. The argument is that curts are lking at transfrmative nature as the primary issue. Pwer t the Peple: Scial Tagging and Cntrlled Vcabularies intrduced the pssibilities that thers are explring thrugh new technlgies. Speakers addressed their prjects and hw t allw fr metadata cntributins while maintaining authrity. It was prpsed that the value f scial tagging is in representing the relatinships that exist between things, as ppsed t the terms applied. My Sunday began with The Evlving Data Standards Landscape: Leading the Way t Integrated Access allwed speakers t discuss the varius data cntent and data frmat standards in use in libraries, archives, and museums, namely RDA, CCO, DACS, MARC, VRA Cre 4 and CDWA Lite XML. Speakers fcused n where materials types intersect. Accrding t Matthew Beacn, as many repsitries begin digitizing materials, the physical distinctins between repsitries are blurred s intellectual descriptins shuld allw fr shared ideas. The primary lessns r bjectives frmulated are the imprtance f applying standards, sharing terminlgies, and establishing shareable cre metadata. Atlanta and the Architecture f Twentieth-Century Gergia fcused n the spread f mdern architecture and the reactins t new styles in Gergia. Benjamin Flwers, frm the Gergia Institute f Technlgy, discussed the spread f Eurpean mdernism t the United States, especially thrugh the wrk f Mies van der Rhe and Walter Grpius. Elizabeth Dwling f the Gergia Institute f Technlgy spke abut the wrk f Philip Schutze, a classical Gergia architect wh wrked during the time f mdernism and rejected the functinalism f mdern architecture. Rbert Craig f Gergia Tech presented the wrk f several architects, namely Tucker and Hwell and Alfred Willis. T cntribute at the cnference, I vlunteered at the registratin desk n Saturday afternn. This prvided an pprtunity t interact with ther ARLIS members and learn mre abut the rganizatin, the cnference, and Atlanta. On my last night, I attended the Cnvcatin Ceremny and Receptin and experienced

26 camaraderie and supprt within the rganizatin. The receptin was an excellent pprtunity t meet mre members, share cnference experiences, and enjy a lvely evening f music by the Dwight Andrews Jazz Band with Atlanta's High Museum f Art serving as the backdrp. This award encuraged me t attend the cnference. I truly appreciate the financial assistance, which always makes attending a cnference easier, especially fr a student. I am hnred t have been selected as a recipient. The supprt f the Texas-Mexic chapter prvided me with a chance t experience the cnference and strengthen my membership in ARLIS/NA.
