3 photo: Davide Pellegrini photo: Davide Pellegrini Ciutat de la Justicia Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes Barcelona On a border site between Barcelona and l'hospitalet, this new sqm City of Justice has been completed in 2008 Bringing together legal departments that were previously located in 17 buildings that were scattered across the two cities, this precinct comprises eight new buildings that are formally and compositionally unified in an apparently haphazard arrangement In form and disposition, the City of Justice breaks down the huge programme of accommodation into four judicial buildings, clustered around a linked concourse with four independent buildings set on the periphery The central cluster of buildings contains courtrooms at the ground level, and uses the concourse as a filter to gather people at the beginning and end of their judicial visit The remaining four buildings provide accommodation for judicial support services, such as forensic sciences, and include two commercial buildings with retail at grade photo: Davide Pellegrini Project is not public! m² Associate architect David Chipperfield s b720 arquitectos DavidePellegrini 3

14 photo: Lutz Hirschmann photo: chaland Umbracle Passeig de Picasso Barcelona The Umbracle (shade house) was part of the buildings designed for the Universal Exhibition and was build in 1883, being used through the exhibition as a pavilion After the event the building recovered its original function, and it is one of the few structures that still prevail from the original exhibition Many other buildings from important architects of the time disappeared after the exhibition was closed This shade house is formed of bare brick façades and wooden louvres to sift the light through the inside The structure in the interior is sustained by slender iron columns, leaving a closed space that produces a suitable thermal and humidity conditions for the implantations of vegetal species from tropical origins photo: Marta Muñoz 1888 Josep Fontsere Naomi 14

21 photo: David Baugh photo: David Baugh San Fernando de Henares Municipal Pool Paseo de Los Pinos San Fernando de Henares If you've ever flown in or out of Barajas airport then you've flown over this building, which lies south east of runways 33 left and right The building also forms the main entrance (which is unusually wide and generous - with ramps to accommodate the different existing levels) to the other two building which form the municipal sports complex The exterior of the pool hall takes the concept of the stretched checkerboard screen, first seen in the Zamora museum, and scales up the idea, using concrete instead of timber This basket (as the architects describe it) acts as a veil to the glazed pool hall behind, cutting down solar gain and glare off the water Due to the high ground water table, the pool itself is raised above grade, giving the swimmers an unusually elevated standpoint photo: David Baugh 1998 Mansilla + Tuñón davidb 21

23 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Murcia City Hall Plaza Cardenal Belluga Murcia The Murcia Town Hall raises in the Cardinal Belluga Square, a baroque square where the protagonist are the façade of the Cathedral designed by Jaime Bort and Cardinal Belluga Palace, the work of the architect Canestro Moneo designs the building of the Town Hall content in its role as a spectator, without seeking the status of protagonist held by the two historical buildings However we do not imagine a commonplace spectator Civil power is embodied in this building on the place where the Church shows its power The façade/retable of the Town Hall facing the square could never, nor would ever, want to compete with the classical order It's organised as a musical score, numerically, accepting the system of horizontal levels of the floor slabs The façade resist symmetries and offers as its key element the balcony of the gallery The Town Hall has not an entrance on the square It respects the pre-eminence of those buildings which have occupied it for so long (text from project memory) 1998 Rafael Moneo City of Murcia Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín There is a tourist office just beside the corner of the building, for more information about the building and the city Only some zones of the building are open the public The opening hours are: Monday-Friday 9am to 2pm Monday-Thursday 5pm to 730pm Saturdays 930am to 130pm The City Hall is in the very center of Murcia The one route to come to the Plaza Cardenal Belluga is by foot since all the vehicles were prohibited in the historical hull of the city 23
