5 LOCAL 369 NEWS LOCAL 369 LAUNCHES ITS NEW YOU TUBE CHANNEL with A CONVERSATION WITH TOMMY CHECK Dve Lwrence nd Devikh Mihiloff, long with Mike Gibson nd Michelle Thoms, hve gotten off to gret strt on the Genertions Project. This project is series of videos tht will chronicle the lore of members of Locl 369. The genesis of this project cme from meetings with the Committee for the Future nd their curiosity bout how things were when music ws everywhere in Ls Vegs. The stories ultimtely will form kind of orl history of our members nd their musicl dventures. Locl 369 now hs its own YouTube chnnel (see link) nd the first video is lredy posted! Tommy Check greed to be the subject of the initil video nd he hs given us some gret stories. Ech of us hs hd our own pth nd it is his own journey tht Tommy hs shred. 6 LOCAL 369 NEWS MUSIC IS LOVE t Opportunity Villge Locl 369 nd Opportunity Villge re embrking on n exciting new prtnership tht will enhnce the lives of people in our community with intellectul nd developmentl disbilities nd their fmilies. This new venture is clled the Music is Love series bsed on the song of the sme nme by Crosby, Stills, Nsh nd Young. The Music is Love project encompsses series of monthly concerts nd workshops t Opportunity Villge presented nd performed by our members. To be held on the third Fridy of every month, the first in the series ws held on September 16 nd fetured the Red Rock Rmblers. Prior to ech of these concerts, members of the performing group will go into the clssrooms t Opportunity Villge to demonstrte their instruments nd some of the music tht will be herd on the concert. These demonstrtions re for ll of the rts deprtments t OV: music, dnce nd visul rts. This will be n interctive experience for the clients s they will be encourged to touch nd exmine the instruments nd perhps know the joy tht comes from mking those instruments sound. The OV clients re ll lerning the song Music is Love which will be performed with ech performnce group t the end of every concert. Thus, they could be performing the song with country bnd, n Arbic music ensemble, string qurtet, jzz trio etc., ech providing unique expression of the mening of the core song. We re grteful to the MPTF for their help in funding this series which is long-term commitment. We ll hope this progrm will become n integrl prt of the stndrd experience t Opportunity Villge. 7 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Locl 369 Member Jnis L. McKy s new book PLAYED OUT ON THE STRIP From 1940 to 1989, nerly every hotel on the Ls Vegs Strip employed full-time bnd or orchestr. After the lte 1980s, when control of the csinos chnged hnds from independent owners to corportions, lmost ll of these musicins found themselves unemployed. Plyed Out on the Strip trces this mjor shift in the music industry through extensive interviews with the scene s former musicins. In 1989, these soon-to-be unemployed musicins went on strike. Author nd Locl 369 member Jnis McKy chrts the fctors involved with this ply, which ws precipitted by severl corporte hotel owners move to replce live musicins with synthesizers nd tped music, strtegic decision mde in order to sve money. The result of this trnsitionl period in Ls Vegs history ws both long-lsting nd fr-reching for the entertinment industry. With its numerous orl history interviews nd personl perspectives from the er, this book will ppel to reders interested in Ls Vegs history, music history, nd lbor issues. 8 OFFICER REPORTS PRESIDENT JACK GAUGHAN 85 Yers of Gret Music On October 13, 2016, we will celebrte the 85 th nniversry of the founding of Locl 369 which t tht time ws clled the Musicin s Protective Union, Locl 369 AFM. We hve hd long nd illustrious history of mking music both here in Ls Vegs nd on the world stge s well. As in ll things in life, however, it is the personl reltionships tht we develop which bring the richest rewrds. In the hy dy of house bnds nd relief bnds, most of the hedliners lwys cknowledged the gretness of the musicins; Sintr lwys cknowledged the gretness of Nelson Riddle nd the other peerless orchestrtors with whom he worked. Those guys knew it ws the musicins tht took things from good to gret. More recently, tht privte pprecition of Ls Vegs musicins from their fellows hs continued. Benny Andersson nd Bjorn Ulveus (of ABBA) clled the Mmm Mi! Bnd t Mndly By kick-ss ; Brin My nd Roger Tylor (of QUEEN) wnted to tke the We Will Rock You bnd on the rod with them; Andrew Lloyd Webber (who cn be prticulrly prickly) ws over-the-top with his prise for the Phntom orchestr t the Venetin s were the Disney execs with The Lion King. And Steve Wynn likes to refer to the Showstoppers orchestr s my orchestr. But tht is only prt of the story. The cretive tem nd cst of those productions reherse for severl weeks, 8 hours dy 6 dys week in order to lern the mteril nd perfect their performnces. The musicins in the orchestr usully hve limited number of hours in ONE dy to put together performnce t the sme level s the rest of the compny. At the Smith Center, there is usully 3 or 4 hour rehersl, 1 hour sound check, nd then the udience rrives expecting professionl show AND they get one! 10 COMMITTEE REPORTS LOCAL 369 COMMITTEE REPORTS BYLAWS COMMITTEE REPORT (Aln Ctes, Gry Cordell, Shkeh Ghouksin, Mrty Rdunz, Dle Thompson Advisory Members: Tom Lipps, Thom Pstor, Dn Philippus, Bob Schs, Greg Vn Boven) After nine months of effort, the Bylws Committee is nering completion of its proposl to updte of our Locl's Bylws. In hopes of mking the bylws more redble nd user-friendly, the Committee hs written drft tht orgnizes the Bylws using formt provided for locls' use by the A.F.M. In terms of substnce, the Committee proposes to updte the Bylws to comply with federl lw nd the current A.F.M. bylws. (The lst time tht this ws done ws 14 yers go.) Also, some confusing or conflicting provisions hve been refined to reflect our members' resonble expecttions nd present usge. The Bylws Committee is excited to present the product of their long work to the membership. Two member forum meetings re scheduled, one on October 16, 2016 nd the second on October 22, At the forums the membership is invited to meet in-person with the Bylws Committee to comment nd to offer chnges to the Bylws revision drft. After the open forums, the Bylws pckge s revised will be formlly presented to the membership for rtifiction t the Jnury Generl Membership Meeting. Smith) The Community Prtnership Committee ttended meeting, including the Socil Medi Committee nd President Gughn, with the Ls Vegs Wedding Chmber of Commerce to estblish reltionship nd see if our locl could get more involved in Ls Vegs billion dollr wedding industry. We hope more will come of this reltionship in the future! MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA COMMITTEE REPORT (Angel Chn, Michel Gill & Beth Lno) The new Locl 369 web site being designed by ADLAVA WEB DESIGN is moving long nicely. At the September 6th Executive Bord Meeting, presenttion of the outline nd wirefrme flow chrt of the new web site ws mde by ADLAVA to the Bord. We expect to hve first design drft from ADLAVA by the middle of October. Our socil medi cmpign continues to expnd, nd we now hve over 4,000 followers on the Locl 369 FceBook pge. MARY TRIMBLE The instntly recognizble lugh of well-known, loved nd respected Ls Vegs musicin Mry Trimble hs been silenced. Trimble, resident of Ls Vegs for more thn 40 yers ws found ded in her home on July 20. Everything bout Mry ws memorble, beginning with her unconventionl creer s professionl violist (nd violinist). Mry ws born in Settle, the middle child of Chrles nd Mry Ren Volz. After grduting from high school t the ge of 16, she begn studying violin with Emnuel Zetlin t the University of Wshington, lter studying viol in Los Angeles with studio musicin Phil Goldberg. Her creer begn in ernest in Los Angeles, where she performed with the Los Angeles Chmber Orchestr under the direction of Neville Mrriner, nd toured the world with the Clebnoff Strings. She lso performed with the Americn Bllet Thetre. As studio violist, she ws fetured on lbums with Srh Vughn (who once sng Hppy Birthdy to Mry in the ldies room), Cnnonbll Adderly, nd others. Mry cme to Ls Vegs in 1974 with her husbnd Jim Trimble, where they rised three children, Ann Mrie Vn Ausdl (dughter with Mry s first husbnd Frncis Vn Ausdl), Jonthon Trimble (Jim s son from previous mrrige) nd Kenneth Chrles (KC) Trimble. While in Ls Vegs, Mry ws first-cll violist for Ls Vegs showroom work, performing with bsolutely everyone who ppered long the Strip. Mry ws vorcious reder nd stlwrt chmpion of the proper use of the English lnguge. She ws usully the smrtest person in the room, lwys the funniest, nd definitely one of the most colorful, regulrly holding court between shows or on rehersl breks with her friends nd collegues, telling stories bout her dventures in wy tht would leve everyone within ershot howling with lughter. Ferless in her self-evlution, Mry lwys presented herself exctly s she ws. It ws this type of brve, honest self-pprisl tht led Mry to grceful exit from the music scene. She retired s principl violist from the Ls Vegs Philhrmonic in 2013, beloved, respected nd missed. Mry ws preceded in deth by her prents, Chrles nd Mry Volz, brother Robert Chrles Volz nd sister Croline Stephnie Volz. She is survived by her dughter, Ann Mrie Vn Ausdl Jrlson (Michel Kucn), son Kenneth Chrles Trimble (Eileen), nd stepson Jon Trimble (Shron); grndchildren Megn Montes, Elen Jrlson, Dniel Jrlson, Nichole Jrlson, Logn Brin Trimble, Winter Tylor Trimble, Cssndr Trimble nd Stephnie Trimble.
