3 Hansaviertel Klopstockstraße Berlin The Hansaviertel is a small locality between the Tiergarten park and the Spree river within the central Mitte borough of Berlin It was almost completely destroyed during World War II, but was rebuilt from 1957 to 1961 as a housing estate project of international master architects like Alvar Aalto, Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius, Oscar Niemeyer etc, called Interbau 1957 (IBA 1957) The whole ensemble is now protected as a historic monument The quarter received its name for its streets named after Hansa cities, with the Hansaplatz in the centre This square contains a small shopping arcade, a library and the Grips-Theater The Hansaplatz subway station was already built in 1957, though the U9 line did not open before 1961 Some Gründerzeit buildings remained north of the Stadtbahn railway The Altonaer Straße, named after Altona, Hamburg, leads to the Victory Column Schloss Bellevue, the residence of the German President is nearby (text from Wikipedia) 1957 Main designer, Alvar Aalto Arne Jacobsen Egon Eiermann Godber Nissen Hans Scharoun Jacob Bakema Ludwig Lemmer Max Taut Oscar Niemeyer Pierre Vago Walter Gropius Werner Düttmann pkrajewski_pl 3

4 Bauhaus archive Klingelhöferstraße Berlin The Bauhaus Archive or the Museum of Design in Berlin deals with the research and presentation of the history and impact of the Bauhaus ( ), the most important school of architecture, design, and art of the 20th century It is the most complete existing collection focused on the history of the school and all aspects of its work and is accessible to allthe museum building is a late work of Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus It was planned in 1964 for Darmstadt and was built in modified form in Berlin Today, its characteristic silhouette is one of Berlin's landmarks 1979 Walter Gropius pkrajewski_pl Wednesdays to Mondays, 10am - 5pm The museum is closed on Tuesdays On Tuesdays following public holidays the museum is open from 10am to 5pm Access by public transport: U-Bahn Nollendorfplatz Bus 100, M29, 187 und 106 Lützowplatz 4

5 photo: Anna Armstrong photo: Anna Armstrong Unité d'habitation Berlin Flatowallee Berlin Le Corbusier designed several variations of the Unité d Habitation, the most famous of which is in Marseille, France All were derived from Le Corbusier s visionary 1922 city plan, known as Ville Contemporaine The plan envisioned massive residential blocks set in open green areas towers in parks, bringing light and air to the residents of urban housing The Unité type was most notable for its creation of internal streets and accommodation of social and communal functions: kindergartens, medical facilities, recreational spaces, all within the housing block The Berlin Unité lacks most of the amenities (save a shop and a post office on the ground floor), but is considered unique for its more generously-sized apartments It accommodates 530 units on 17 floors The internal streets here are oppressive, windowless corridors Still, the building is in quite good condition; its hilltop setting, iconic formal qualities, and polychromatic façades are very striking (text from Galinskycom) Public access unknown! 1957 Le Corbusier jeooren photo: Anna Armstrong 5

9 Crematorium in Berlin Kiefholzstrasse Berlin With up to 12,000 cremations a year carried out there, it was necessary to provide an appropriate setting for mourners as well The two functions -cremation and funeral ceremonies take place on separate floors of this monolithic exposed concrete structure Access to the building is via three recessed forecourts, which lead into the large central vestibule This square hall can accommodate up to 1,000 people and is spatially articulated by 29 monumental circular columns with so-called?light capitals? at their heads Supported only by cantilevered brackets at the tops of the columns, the rough concrete roof seems to hover over this space like a translucent canopy The lines of the climbing formwork to the walls create an ordering structure (text from detailde) 1999 Schultes Frank Architekten pkrajewski_pl 9

19 Stresemannstrasse Residential Building Stresemannstrasse Berlin This is one of Zaha Hadid's projects which was realized before she became famous It was built in The structure is a residential building with an acute-angled corner on the corner of Stresemannstrasse and Dessauer Strasse Hadid designed oblique wall constructions which were shifted towards each other The eight-storey building is cladded with bronze, which results in changing light reflections Project is not public! 1994 Zaha Hadid s pkrajewski_pl 19

21 The Kreuzberg Tower Besselstrasse Berlin The Kreuzberg Tower was part of the 1987 International BauAufstellung (IBA) Program The German program continues to support innovative architecture and design through built and unbuilt projects In 1987 the IBA invited noted architects and designers to envision new low and middle income housing for West Berlin Hejduk's project is composed of a 14 story tower with two separate 5 story wings The neutral coloured tower and wings feature green geometric shapes attached to the façades These extrusions serve as balconies and sun shades for the low income housing units 1988 John Hejduk pkrajewski_pl 21

23 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Silodam Silodam AL Amsterdam Netherlands The Housing Silo is situated on the IJ River, at the tip of the pier, next to two former grain warehouses (silos) that have been converted into housing The 157 apartments, business units and public spaces, in the Housing Silo, are compressed within a 10 storey high and 20 meters deep urban envelope The apartments, rental and owner in different sizes, are stacked, legible on the façade, each of which is expressed differently The aim of mixing functions spatially (commercial units and semi-public spaces were not to be confined automatically to ground level but distributed throughout the complex) has not been realized All commercial units have been gathered in a clearly recognisable volume At the west side is a shared roof terrace for residents, and small boats can moor between the columns underneath photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is not public! 26 photo: architour photo: Allard van der Hoek The Whale Baron G A Tindalplein TW Amsterdam Netherlands The Whale is one of three big meteorites which have landed in-between the lowrise row houses on the Islands of Borneo and Sporenburg Thanks to its sculptural shape, this building by Frits van Dongen is a real landmark Inside are 194 apartments and 1100 m2 office and retail space Underneath is a large parking garage with 179 places The traditional closed block (100 by 60 m) has been transformed by lifting the two, so the public space flows through underneath Inside the block is a private garden, designed by West 8 The apartments are accessed from galleries running along the inner façade Project is not public!
